[Elecraft] KX1 Any photos?
I am looking for any photos out there of people building the KX1. I'm not looking for board-only photos; I'm hoping to find a photo or two of someone at their bench, with parts organized in the background and soldering occuring in the foreground. I would be using the photo(s) for a ham presentation I'm doing, in particular, a section on Building the KX1. Any help you might give would be greatly appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] K3 book 30% off
I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is an excellent way to get the most out of a K3. [Elecraft] P3 - Power up glitches with K3
I've got a P3 connected to my K3 with all the proper connections. K3 info: s/n 1206 Firmware: MCU 4.36, DSP 2.73, Flash Parameters 1.14 P3 info: s/n 1490 Firmware: 1.09 When I first hooked up the P3 a few months ago, I set the jumpers (and connected a power cable) to power it up from the K3. At that time, I got immediate connection and immediate talking between the P3 and the K3. Frequency and filter width showed up correctly immediately at power up. After a couple of months, it appears to not immediately 'talk' with the K3 upon power up. Sometimes no frequency nor filter bandwidth are displayed. Sometimes frequency is displayed, but no filter bandwidth. Sometimes the bandwidth shows up and is shifted off the right. In all cases, I can manually power down the P3 and toggle it back up, and all those things eventually show up properly. Sometimes it takes several on-off toggles (5 or more). In one instance, it didn't come up after several toggles, then about 10 minutes later they started talking correctly. Cables are tightly attached. There is no movement to the rigs during use. This appears to be software related, not mechanical. Ideas? - Phil, WA7URV -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-Power-up-glitches-with-K3-tp7122888p7122888.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] P3 - What am I observing?
My K3 and P3 are connected in the usual way (RS-232, etc.) My K3 has a 500Hz roofing filter, and I typically set my DSP filter to 500 Hz when operating CW. Using tonight's display, I have an approx. -150dB average noise floor on 10 meters. I'm not exactly sure how to identify the noise floor using the P3, but the display (without considering signals) basically averages across the -150dB graticule. I have the P3's span set to -1kHz to +1kHz, making each horizontal division 500 Hz. Upon checking in to my nightly 10 meter net on 28.130, I see the net control operator's signal peak at about -100dB. Here's my question: What are the two spikes that I see about 500 Hz to each side of 28.130, approximately 25-30 dB down from the center's peak level (-125 to -130 dB)? These spikes are above my observed floor about 20-25 dB. It's a beautiful thing; I simply am not sure what I'm seeing. One thing I am sure of, when you all respond with the answer, I'll bop myself in the head for not thinking about it! Actually, I'm thinking that there is a great opportunity for someone of knowledge to write a tutorial that goes beyond the owner's manual in explaining the types of things we can see with the P3. Another one, for instance, would be, When I use the CWT control on the K3, why does my P3 almost always shows that the zero beat frequency is about 20-30 Hz off? If I use Marker A to center over the observed signal's peak and trigger the P3 to move the K3's VFO to that peak, my little CWT visual indicator on the K3 shows me to be off by a couple of clicks. What is that telling me? Anyway, I sure would like to use the P3 to learn more about scans that I'm observing and how my K3/P3 combination is processing them! 73, Phil WA7URV -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-What-am-I-observing-tp6954197p6954197.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 DSP Upgrade Board Question
I just sent this message to Elecraft support, but wondered if anyone out there knows the answer or has experience: I received my DSP upgrade board (K3DSPUPGD) around 10/14/2011 and am just now installing it. My K3 is serial number 1206. Upon removing the original DSP board, I noted the board identifier which reads K3 DSP (then a white painted-over patch) (c) 2007 Elecraft The old board also has a label indicated Assy REV D When I unpacked the new board, its identifier reads exactly the same: K3 DSP (with a similar painted-over patch) (c) 2007 Elecraft The new board also has the label indicating Assy REV D The two boards appear identical in every way. If the new board is in fact a DSP upgrade, how does Elecraft identify them? Did I received an old board by mistake? I ended up reinstalling the old board and did not install the new one. I wanted to wait until I received guidance from Elecraft. Also, the instructions I downloaded for the new DSP board show a nylon spacer. I don't have a nylon spacer in my K3. Seems I remember prior email threads about that spacer going in to create a stiffer front board rest, but I didn't have the spacer. Whatever guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Any thoughts? 73, Phil, WA7URV -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-DSP-Upgrade-Board-Question-tp6921243p6921243.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3: Some advice on mods
I just received the following mod kits from Elecraft: KPA3 12 v Sense Modification (1N4148) K3 Hardware AGC Threshold Mod Kit K3 Audio Line Out Mod Kit K3 DSP Upgrade Swap K3 I/O Buffer Mod Kit K3 VFO Tuning Noise Filter Kit K3 Remote I/O Board Upgrade K3 Synth Stiffener Question: Even though all of these are relatively simple (I've got lots of successful experience with PCB work/rework), do any of you have a recommended strategy for performing these mods? (i.e., just jump in and do them all at once? do them one at a time, checking radio function each time? doing certain ones together, then checking operation before doing others? etc.) 73, Phil, WA7URV K3 #1206 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Some-advice-on-mods-tp6894406p6894406.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Delays, etc.
As a product manager for a manufacturing company, I'm finding the whole K3 launch/introduction process very interesting, and I've learned a lot from it. I talk about it every day at work among my peers. Elecraft's customer expectations have been varied, from total understanding and patience to near anger for misrepresentation of promises, to order cancellation (the ultimate in customer opinions). I regret not having the foresight to write a white paper about the process from the beginning when the K3 was announced. I am saving my money and selling a few things to build up for a K3 purchase someday in the future. Until then, I'll keep learning from the reflector group, including those who are highly disappointed and those that are highly satisfied (and everyone in between!) In the meantime, I have been doing lots of analysis of K3 design to learn as much as I can about the radio I'll own someday. (By the way, my expectation is that some day in the future when I have enough money to buy it, there will probably be a waiting line, so I'm not selling all of my capability to operate before receiving, building and testing my K3!) Based on Tom, AK2B's description, I am a Believer. Not a Believer with blinders or with blind faith, but a Believer none-the-less. Obviously, I'm not an early adapter, but I am a Believer in Elecraft and its products. My KX1, K1 and K2 are incredible rigs. My K3 will be as well! Hang in there, Elecraft! Oh, and thanks to EVERYONE who contributes to this reflector! 73 Phil, WA7URV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Bandstop Filter Schematic
I'm not yet an owner of a K3, but I have been studying the schematic package to learn as much as I can about the rig. On the RF Board schematic, sheet 1 of 4, upper left border of the page is an apparent multi-pin connector is labeled as Z3 Stop-Band Filter. The next sheet after all of the RF Board schematic sheets is a schematic called Bandstop Filter. I'm assuming this is the circuit that interfaces with the Z3 connector. But I can't figure out how the Bandstop filter would connect electrically to Z3! Could someone educate me? Of course, that may be a lost cause! :-) Thanks in advance!! 73, Phil Westover, WA7URV (K1, K2, KX1, and a K3 not too far away!) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft_K3] K3 Product Launch
My profession is RD, product development and product launch with a $300 million/year company. One alternative to this entire situation would have been for Elecraft to do what we do: Not divulge anything about the product or its launch schedule until all development is finished and all production systems are ready. I've enjoyed watching Elecraft's development with the K3. It's an insight that I normally don't get (because all of our competition keeps everything very quiet and secret as well). Whenever the customer gets any wind of a new product, especially one as exciting as the K3, the risk is very high to keep everyone happy. I don't criticize Wayne and Eric (and the gang) for letting us all know what's happening. After all, they did keep things secret for 3+ years! But as I said, with the first production runs not completed at the time of the announcements, they are taking the risk. I think they knew that, and I think they are so dedicated to getting the job done right that they were willing to take that chance. I haven't ordered a K3 yet, but I will. By not being one of the early adaptors, I reduce the risk for myself as well. - Phil WA7URV Yahoo! [Elecraft] K2 in 19inch Rack?
I have mounted all sorts of amateur gear into 19 panels. While I have yet mounted a K2 in a panel, I have the intent to do so, and it will be a piece of cake. My method may not be a standard approach, it does meet my requirements: 1. I don't have to alter the equipment in any way, and if it is removed later, there would be no indication that it's ever been rack mounted. (I do this to maintain the value of the gear.) 2. I can do the job without any significant tools other than a saber saw with a metal cutting blade, a good metal file and a good electric drill (with bits). (A person just needs to be careful and take it slow.) 3. The only parts that are necessary to do this is the panel itself (which I have access to good heavy gauge aluminum), a couple of modified framing brackets I found at Home Depot, a D-ring strap, some protective padding (foam), and a few nuts, bolts and trim rings for the screws. If anyone is interested in seeing how this looks from the front, please send me an email. If someone wants to do this and see the panel's backside (where the mounting actually occurs), I can take a couple of digital photos to send out. 73, Phil WA7URV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
