I would suggest reloading MCU 2.19 and DSP 1.87, then adjusting the AGC parameters to suit your preference. However, the pad in my speaker shield is already in place, has adhesive backing on both sides, and is larger both in diameter and thickness than the mystery part. Perhaps this is Elecraft's version of the Willy Wonka golden ticket and I have won a free trip to Aptos and a tour of the Elecraft factory? Thanks for the numerous off list responses. Yaesu, Kenwood and Heil connect the shield of the mic cable to the mic return and not chassis (ground). Icom uses the shield as the mic return. When the shield of the mic cable is tied to the low side of a balanced input, RF that SHOULD go to ground/chassis is forced through the mic preamp instead. With the shield tied to the mic return there is effectively a 10' piece of wire (antenna) connected to the mic input unless the mic return is tied to the chassis and the chassis is connected to a solid RF ground. This is not correct. There is nothing wrong with connecting an unbalanced mic to a balanced input -- you simply unbalance the input by grounding one side of the input. You lose the benefit of the balanced circuitry's ability to reject noise, but the input will work fine. The correct wiring is simply hot to one side, shield to the other side AND the chassis. I do have a serious quarrel with the W2IHY equalizer though -- it is FAR more complex and expensive than needed to get great audio from a pro mic with a ham rig. All you really need for an equalizer is a good quality capacitor of suitable value in series between the mic and the mic input of the radio. The capacitor is chosen to provide a low frequency rolloff fairly high in the audio passband. See http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf I have used a circuit like this with an EV RE16 and several rigs. Total cost about $0.50. It would work equally well with any good low-Z dynamic mic. I've also changed values in coupling capacitors in the K2 to achieve the same result, and that works quite well too. You don't need the capacitor with a K3, of course -- the equalizer in DSP does the job. Pro dynamic mics are easily connected to ham rigs -- since they're balanced, one side of the balanced output goes to the mic input, the other side goes to audio return, and the shield goes to the chassis. I've done this quite successfully with an Omni V, a TS850, and FT1000MP. By successfully, I mean that I get VERY competitve, clean, contest-quality audio that cuts through QRM and noise. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] XV-144--Not switching to TX
Hi all With all the traffic abt the K-3, I think my help request got lost. So far, have spent 3 days trying to get this silly thing to work. Had a problem at the start of alignment. K5 was energized all the time in the tx mode. Redid some solder connections on the front panel board and cured that problem. Did the LNA setup and peaked inductors, and receive is fine. I have the K60XV and, setup the XV as per page 5 in the manual. I setup my K-2 for the XV-144 as TRN 2 but, it is not turned on by the K-2. My XV-50 is TRN 1 I setup the XV-144 per page 7 so I could do tests. the XV turns on with S-1 but will not go to the tx mode with Key in grounded.. Tried grounding the 8R/key line up to U-1, Pin 27 and no tx. Grounding the collector of Q-2 keys relay K-5. Sounds like U-1 is bad but swapped working front panel board from my working XV-50 and have the same problem. RX on my 144 is fine. Can't find a problem on the RF board. This works fine if I key the K-2 with my straight key. I have a Heil foot switch I use with my IC-746 and Heil ICM. I ordered a new AD-1k adapter but that is'nt the problem. I have a Radio Shack mic that works fine ( # 1 audio, # 2 ptt and 78 gnd). Anyone have any ideas? [Elecraft] Power Pole connectors
Hi All I am finishing a XV-50 transverter. Down to making the power cord. How is it supposed to plug on to the XV-50?? have 2 red and 2 black connectors and 4 crimp pins. I had no problem mounting the PCB connectors. H ow are they supposed to plug together since these are the sane size? I looked on Anderson's web site but, did'nt find any good info there. [Elecraft] Rework stuff
H i; Maybe some one can help. I am building K-2 # 5423 with the rework eliminators. I got the unmdules and missing parts but the instructions were not good for installing missing parts. I figured it all out except the 60 meter module. I installed D-19 and 20 before testing and alignment part II. All was fine until VCO control voltage setting. The low and high freq voltages at R-30 were well within range on all bands except 40 meters where it was 7.000--5.51v 7.300--7.91v and sensitivity seemed low on 40. Then I discovered on the K-2 schematic DO NOT install D 19, 20 with out changing C-71 from 82pf to 120pf. I replaced C-71 with the 120pf that came with the rework parts and now 40 is deaf and the VCO voltage is7.93 volts at 7.000 and hardly changes up to 7.300. Are there other changes that need to be made? Maybe somebody reading this has had this problem. tnx Phil ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Toroids
Thank the Lord fo Mychael's toroids! #5423 almost to 40 meter testing. After 2 Cataract surgeries and lasar work on my left eye due to diabetic problems, I am working on number 3 K-2. Having built # 2442 and # 1030 (or was it 1031) and winding all the toroids myself. Just installed T5, T6 and 7. Was sure glad I did'nt have to wind them myself. Only problem I've had is with the LCD. The top and bottom segment of the fifth digit don't light. I'll have to stop at the next testing point and find out why. I've already checked and double checked and resoldered all pins on the LCD. Anyone had a defective LCD driver? Other segments change with VFO. What voltages should I look for on LCD pins? 73 de Phil K8MBY ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] K-2 #5423
Hi All: Just completed alignment & test Part I but, have one glitch. The 5th digit in the display, the top and bottom segment do not light. All other segments change OK. I have checked and reworked all pins on the display and solder joints seem fine. All pins on the display driver are seated in the socket and not bent. Also the last digit the top segment IS lit in CW mode only. Any one have any suggestions on what to check as to voltages, resistance checks ect. Before I installed the LCD, I double, triple checked the socket for U1. Tnx Phil K8MBY ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
