Re: [Elecraft] {K-3} K144XV

2010-03-20 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

My original question was how to monitor 2M on the sub, while using the main
for HF. I don' seem to be able to do that.

 Phil
 K8MBY

The K3 with K144XV supports simultaneous 2m reception on Main and Sub. I
just verified it with my radio.

Set the Main rx to 2m, and then in BSET, tap ANT so MAIN appears.

 73,

 Lyle KK7P

Thanks to all who replied, several said 2 meter recption is not possible
 on the sub.
I thought it was, Yes on both the main and sub.

When I put a 2M freq in the sub, just Ant apperas in the display, I guess it

The datasheet is quite clear - 2m reception is possible on main and
 sub-receivers.

Diversity reception is not, because there's only one 2m antenna
 connection.

Waiting for my k144XV too !

My last attempt didn't make it through, hopefully this one will.

 Hi all,
As I understand it, the only input path to the K144XV is it's
dedicated ANT 3 BNC connector, it cannot receive signals through the
ATU. The only way the sub receiver can listen to it is if it is sharing
the main receiver's antenna connection and hearing the 28MHz IF through
the KXV3A. Otherwise 2 K144XVs would be required. The sub receiver can
be set to MAIN to share the main receiver's signal or AUX which
depending on how it was hooked up when installed will either be the
non-transmitting jack on the ATU (CONFIG:KRX3 set to ANT=ATU) or the AUX
RF BNC connector on the rear panel (CONFIG:KRX3 set to ANT=BNC), neither
of which will hear the K144XV. With the sub turned on go into BSET and
tap ANT to change it's antenna to MAIN. Holding RX ANT will also
change the sub's antenna when not in BSET. Thus, 2M diversity reception
is not possible with the K144XV. I have the sub RX but don't have the
K144XV yet (it should arrive any day), so I could be missing something,
but I have been studying the manuals in preparation. I'm sure someone
will correct me if I'm wrong. Hope that helps.

The KUSB uses a Prolific chipset and it has problems when using slower
 baud
rates and 2 stop bits. I experienced exactly the same behaviour with two
different adapters (both using Prolific chipsets, though not bought from
Elecraft) when I tested my K2 with KComm.

I believe the Keyspan uses an FTDI chipset which is somewhat better.
Therefore the solution is probably going to be to use the Keyspan. I did
find that the Prolific adapters sometimes work better by setting the
 serial
port settings to 1 stop bit, but the baud rate of the KIO2 is fixed at
 4800
 so that can't be changed.

I received my W2 VHF sensor today and believe there may be a problem when
AUTO mode is selected on the W2 display unit. There is no illumination
 from
the POWER or SWR LEDs when in this configuration. If manual 2/20/200 W
ranges are selected, the POWER and SWR LEDs illuminate normally with power
inputs between 1-25 Watts. While using the 200 W HF sensor, AUTO and all
manual modes are displaying normally at power levels between 1-100 W. Has
 anyone else noticed this behavior?

The KUSB is just a USB to RS-232. They nailed me for $40 for one because I
thought it was a special one for the K3. It didn't work. I later found one
for under $10 that works fine. Don't buy it.

Elecraft have some wonderful products and accessories. The KUSB just isn't

I built this K2 (my third) with the thought of portable operations. The

It's been years since my last K2 but I remember discussions on this

 the K2 is
a heavy little buggerand I can see how a carrying strap would be
 nice to insure
that no drops happen while moving the rig about. Has anyone here

 a carrying

 structural strength
issue to be concerned about since the side panel is attached to the PC

to monitor 6 meters in my KRX3 while on lower bands. I can listen to 6
meters now but have to listen to noise on the right speaker.

 Thanks
 Phil

Re: [Elecraft] K3 on FM

2009-02-09 Thread Phillip Buckholdt
Hi

I've been running pre beta test firmware V2.92 for about a week. I has a
revision for FM devation and AM compression. I have checked into several AM
nets and 6 meter repeaters and have received very good audio reports. This
relase has the VFO IND feature. Do not know when it will be released though
but, should be soon.

 Hi John,
I have also experienced poor reports on FM. The audio is thin. The
compressor does not work on FM at all. It is not a viable rig for FM at
the moment. I will be using 10FM as well as transverting, so hopefully
 they will sort it out.

 Hello all

I joined a 2m FM net yesterday, using my K3(10w) and transverter. It's
 the
first time I've transmitted FM and I got poor audio reports.

I'm using the same microphone (Kenwood MC43) and mic settings (gain 25,
 comp
25, FP,L) as for ssb, where I get plenty of modulation and good reports.
 In
contrast, FM transmit has a very low audio level and there is a
whistle/whine in the background. FM deviation is set to 5kHz.

FM reception is fine, using the 13kHz filter.

 Any suggestions ? Maybe there's a menu setting I've missed ?

 Thanks

Phil,

I don't notice a change in the audio level on my K3.
Is there a possibility that you had your AGC set for strong AGC action,
and the AGC changes in 2.19/1.87 is creating the difference for you?
I would suggest reloading MCU 2.19 and DSP 1.87, then adjusting the AGC
parameters to suit your preference. Loading the new firmware does not set
the parameters to any default settings, the settings you had before will
still be in effect.

I've received several responses regarding the mystery part, most of which
are associating it with the speaker shield.

However, the pad in my speaker shield is already in place, has adhesive
backing on both sides, and is larger both in diameter and thickness than
the mystery part.

Perhaps this is Elecraft's version of the Willy Wonka golden ticket and I
have won a free trip to Aptos and a tour of the Elecraft factory?

Thanks for the numerous off list responses. I'm inclined to think that it
may have been included in error or accidentally. If it does show up in the
assembly instructions I'll follow up.

mic return.

When the shield of the mic cable is tied to the low side of a
balanced input, RF that SHOULD go to ground/chassis is forced
through the mic preamp instead. With the shield tied to the
mic return there is effectively a 10' piece of wire (antenna)
connected to the mic input unless the mic return is tied to
the chassis and the chassis is connected to a solid RF ground.

This is not correct. There is nothing wrong with connecting an
unbalanced mic to a balanced input -- you simply unbalance the
input by grounding one side of the input. You lose the benefit of
the balanced circuitry's ability to reject noise, but the input
will work fine. The correct wiring is simply hot to one side,
shield to the other side AND the chassis.

I do have a serious quarrel with the W2IHY equalizer though -- it
is FAR more complex and expensive than needed to get great audio
from a pro mic with a ham rig. All you really need for an
equalizer is a good quality capacitor of suitable value in series
between the mic and the mic input of the radio. The capacitor is
chosen to provide a low frequency rolloff fairly high in the
audio passband. See

http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf

I have used a circuit like this with an EV RE16 and several rigs.
Total cost about $0.50. It would work equally well with any good
low-Z dynamic mic. I've also changed values in coupling
capacitors in the K2 to achieve the same result, and that works
quite well too. You don't need the capacitor with a K3, of course
-- the equalizer in DSP does the job.

Pro dynamic mics are easily connected to ham rigs -- since
they're balanced, one side of the balanced output goes to the mic
input, the other side goes to audio return, and the shield goes
to the chassis. I've done this quite successfully with an Omni V,
a TS850, and FT1000MP. By successfully, I mean that I get VERY
competitve, clean, contest-quality audio that cuts through QRM
and noise.

Hi

Waiting on my K-3 and thought I'd make a cable for my XV-144 XV-432 to
connect to my K-3. The info is very sparse. Nothing in the K-3 Owners Manual
except a pin out chart and nothing in the XV manuals refering to the K-3. I
have the 15 and 9 pin plugs. Need info on wiring the 15 pin end.

I'm in the second bunch to ship, so I guess there is no hurry. If anyone
knows where this wiring charts are listed, can you point me in the right
direction.

It appears that tomorrow is the big day! Haven't seen any updates
pushing the ship date out any further. You guys can start checking your mail
boxes after tomorrow. I bet some have specified overnight shipping. That's
what I would do. Who's going to be first on the air?

[Elecraft] Transverters setup

2007-06-10 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

Hi all

I am using a XV-50 and XV-144. I am now finishing a Xv-432. When
setting up in the K-2 menu as TRN3, setting the operating freq. as 432 and
exiting the menu, then going to TRN3 the dispayed frequency is 418.000. To
get the K-2 display to read 432.000, I have to set the Freq. to 446 in the
setup menu. Is this right?? Can't find any reference to this in the K-2,
XV60 or XV432 manuals.

Does anyone have had this problem?

Thanks de Phil

Quite right!!

The reason why you get You're S9 but please repeat everything is
that you can be S9 and be covered by QRM/QRN.

I should have said 5 9.

If they want real measurements, then the person on the receiving end
should use a calibrated step attenuator and use it to match signal
levels. But no ham is likely to ask someone else for an accurate
measure in uv or dbm unless they already know that the other guy
has a REAL means of measuring AND has real reason to want to know.
For most of us hams (99.9%), stronger and weaker is good enough
for comparisons that we might want to do.

True. I very seldom look at my S meter - calibrated in dbm - unless doing
something with my antenna or if the other guy asks for a comparison in db.

Sun is up...off to Dayton.

Enjoy yourself!

[Elecraft] XV-144--Not switching to TX

2007-04-29 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

Hi all

With all the traffic abt the K-3, I think my help request got lost.
So far, have spent 3 days trying to get this silly thing to work.
Had a problem at the start of alignment. K5 was energized all the time
in the tx mode. Redid some solder connections on the front panel board and
cured that problem. Did the LNA setup and peaked inductors, and receive is
fine.
I have the K60XV and, setup the XV as per page 5 in the manual. I setup my
K-2 for the XV-144 as TRN 2 but, it is not turned on by the K-2. My XV-50 is
TRN 1
I setup the XV-144 per page 7 so I could do tests. the XV turns on
with S-1 but will not go to the tx mode with Key in grounded.. Tried
grounding the 8R/key line up to U-1, Pin 27 and no tx. Grounding the
collector of Q-2 keys relay K-5. Sounds like U-1 is bad but swapped working
front panel board from my working XV-50 and have the same problem.

RX on my 144 is fine. Can't find a problem on the RF board. Help,
don't have much hair left. Have to mow the yard while we have sunshine.
Does anyone have any ideas?.

 Thanks Phil

[Elecraft] Proset

2006-06-19 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

  Hi;

I have a Heil Proset that I got from Elecraft. I hooked up according to spec
sheet, jumpers on all pins on the header and 5.6k res pins 1 to6 on mic
socket. This works fine if I key the K-2 with my straight key. I have a Heil
foot switch I use with my IC-746 and Heil ICM. I ordered a new AD-1k adapter
but that is'nt the problem. I have a Radio Shack mic that works fine ( # 1
audio, # 2 ptt and 78 gnd).

Anyone have any ideas?

  Thanks Phil (# 5423)

[Elecraft] Power Pole connectors

2006-05-15 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

Hi All

I am finishing a XV-50 transverter. Down to making the power cord. How is
it supposed to plug on to the XV-50??

have 2 red and 2 black connectors and 4 crimp pins. I had no problem
mounting the PCB connectors. H ow are they supposed to plug together since
these are the sane size? I looked on Anderson's web site but, did'nt find
any good info there.

[Elecraft] Rework stuff

2006-03-30 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

H i;

Maybe some one can help. I am building K-2 # 5423 with the rework
eliminators.
I got the unmdules and missing parts but the instructions were not good for
installing missing parts. I figured it all out except the 60 meter module.
I installed D-19 and 20 before testing and alignment part II. All was
fine until VCO control voltage setting. The low and high freq voltages at
R-30 were well within range on all bands except 40 meters where it was
7.000--5.51v 7.300--7.91v and sensitivity seemed low on 40. Then I
discovered on the K-2 schematic DO NOT install D 19, 20 with out changing
C-71 from 82pf to 120pf.
I replaced C-71 with the 120pf that came with the rework parts and now 40
is deaf and the VCO voltage is7.93 volts at 7.000 and hardly changes up to
7.300.

Are there other changes that need to be made? Maybe somebody reading
this has had this problem.

   tnx Phil

[Elecraft] Toroids

2006-03-22 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

Thank the Lord fo Mychael's toroids!
#5423 almost to 40 meter testing. After 2 Cataract surgeries and lasar work
on my left eye due to diabetic problems, I am working on number 3 K-2.
Having built # 2442 and # 1030 (or was it 1031) and winding all the toroids
myself. Just installed T5, T6 and 7. Was sure glad I did'nt have to wind
them myself.
Only problem I've had is with the LCD. The top and bottom segment of
the fifth digit don't light. I'll have to stop at the next testing point and
find out why. I've already checked and double checked and resoldered all
pins on the LCD. Anyone had a defective LCD driver? Other segments change
with VFO. What voltages should I look for on LCD pins?

[Elecraft] K-2 #5423

2006-03-18 Thread Phillip Buckholdt

Hi All:

Just completed alignment test Part I but, have one glitch. The 5th
digit in the display, the top and bottom segment do not light. All other
segments change OK. I have checked and reworked all pins on the display and
solder joints seem fine. All pins on the display driver are seated in the
socket and not bent. Also the last digit the top segment IS lit in CW mode
only.

Any one have any suggestions on what to check as to voltages, resistance
checks ect. Before I installed the LCD, I double, triple checked the socket
for U1.

  Tnx Phil K8MBY
