[Elecraft] DX Split & Link

2015-02-18 Thread qrz
Or
When chasing DX always keep Split activated and VFO's linked, that way when
you move up with VFO B for the split the DeltaF light comes on and you avoid
the embarrassing UP UP.
My two cents.
Hey maybe that was the reason for Link?

[Elecraft] Preview P3

2012-12-30 Thread qrz
Hello Elecraft enthusiasts,

I was wondering if there is anyone in the New England area (I'm in Saugus)
that wouldn't mind showing me their P3 and maybe giving me some firsthand
opinions. I was considering purchasing the P3 but would like to see it in
action first.

Thanks,

George

[Elecraft] Replacement Batteries

2011-03-22 Thread QRZ
Dear Fellow Elecraft Enthusiasts,

I know this is off topic but I also know there is a tremendous amount of
experience in this group.

My question is where can one find replacement batteries for handitalkies,
portable phones, etc that don't die in a matter of months?

I have bought from a number of sources each time trying a different company
because the replacements just don't last. The original lasted for 4 years
but the replacement won't last 6 months?? Am I the only one?

I need to try again, but I'm tired of buying junk.

Sorry for the off topic post.

You can reply off line to reduce QRM.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC THR doesn't go low enough

2010-10-08 Thread QRZ

Ok, now I've done it...
I had resigned myself to living with the AGC off because I can't stand the
sound of the audio with it on in CW mode (I've come close to selling it
because of that many times), but with all this chatter about the AGC
settings, I got in there and messed around again (still not happy) but now
when I shut of the AGC, my audio shuts off too... ARGHH. Can anyone tell me
what I can do to undo my "adjustments" and get the option to shut of this
cursed AGC off without losing my audio?

Many thanks in advance and I better stop reading these postings :-)

  Steve,

The solution is to RAISE the threshold. I run mine at 008 which is the
max. I also run the slope at 002 which makes the K3 AGC response more
like my K2 - weak signals sound weaker than stronger signals. You can
alter the slope without running into the situation where the K3 sounds
noisy, but the signals will sound more nearly the same as the slope
numbers get larger.

If your local noise is high, increase the AGC threshold and the K3 will
quiet down.
There is yet another way - turn off the preamp, and even turn on the
attenuator. You will have to increase your normal AF Gain a bit, but
the noise will be reduced. If you can still hear an increase in the
audio output when the antenna is connected, you can even reduce the RF
gain. You are not increasing the USABLE receiver sensitivity by running
everything at full right controls - in the presence of atmospheric
noise, that will only reduce the usable dynamic range and will make the
receiver sound noisy.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Low speaker output problem

2010-09-07 Thread QRZ
Gary,

Perhaps you are correct, but my serial number is not much younger than
yours, only 200 or so, the only way I can get adequate volume from my K3
when the shack is noisy is to shut of the AGC, but that can be a two edged
sword. I can turn the volume all the way up and the depending on what I am
listening to it most often isn't too loud. (I'm not hard of hearing) My K3
is factory assembled, so I know it wasn't my fault :-)

My K3 does not act like you describe. I can blow my ears off with the
external speaker set to 3:00. Regardless of the NR/NB settings and I've
played with the settings for each. This with extremely weak sigs from mid
east on 80 and with width settings down to 200 cps. 9:00 with cans and
11:00 max with speaker, usually less. Perhaps there's two groups of K3s out
there having different characteristics. Mine is #4495. I have not changed
the factory settings for AGC at all. I have played with the NR/NB settings.
I've found that although the NR does attenuate the background noise, it
improves the SNR such that my speaker/headset controls remain pretty much
the same as w/o NR or a tad higher. The gain adjustment on the narrow
filters is positive of course.

Good luck es 73,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & FD multi band antenna

2010-06-11 Thread QRZ
Hi Gary,

I use a very simple inverted vee 41' total length which is not resonant on
any band, I have constructed it out of Coated-Flex-150 from qsradio.com
which is very flexible and tangle resistant and works well in trees, fed
with coax and very easy to get in the air and tunes 10 - 80 with the K3's
ATU.

I have the internal tuner in my K3 and want to be able to put up a
wire antenna that can be assembled in minutes for both FD and public
event locations. I used to have a Mor-Gain antenna & while it wasn't
a great performer, it would have been fine for this use. Danged if I
can find it though, I must have lent it out & never got it back.

I've thought to use my spud gun to send a random wire over a tree top
& have a counterpoise wire on the ground, using the K3's ATU to match
the wire to the band. The goal would be to cover 80-20 meters. Above
20 would be nice but there's not much activity there and I'd like to
be able to demonstrate Ham Radio.

Any suggestions on something else that is convenient and works well
would be appreciated.

Thanks

I use N3FJP’s logging software, ACLog. Years ago, I helped Scott, the
author, debug his software to do CAT with my FT1000MP. Everything worked
very well. I could click on a DX spot in his program and my FT1000MP would
instantly change to the frequency and mode of the spot. Since I’ve had my
K3 (#474) I haven’t bothered to set up the ACLog software to talk to the rig
until about a month ago. Now I notice that the rig is not changing to the
mode that is “presumed” for that particular spot frequency. If I click on a
spot on 7.025 and the K3 is in SSB mode on 20M, it switches to the correct
frequency (7.025) but it stays in SSB mode. My FT1000MP will instantly
change the mode to CW for the presumed band plan.

I’ve selected “Elecraft” in the ACLog software rig setup dropdown menu.
Maybe it should be “Kenwood”. If you are using your K3 with N3FJP’s logging
software I’d appreciate it if you would please contact me directly and share
your settings.

Also, are any other K3 users experiencing an annoying 3-4 second delay in
the K3 changing to a new DX spot when selected in ACLog? My 1000MP was
instant. My K3 really drags its feet making the DX spot change. Is this an
ACLog issue or a K3 issue (or an OPERATOR issue)? :o)

Thanks and 73,

Terry, WØFM

Re: [Elecraft] SDR-IQ

2010-06-08 Thread QRZ
Hi John,

Having had an IC-756, I was sure I couldn't live without a band scope and so
I hesitated and almost didn't get a K3. When I did get the K3 I immediately
realized I had been correct in my initial assumption, so I began looking
around for a solution.

I was initially very disappointed with the performance of the SDR-IQ and was
convinced it was something I was doing wrong. I was right, with the help of
John, N1JM who sent me his ini file (and others who lent advice and
suggestions) and some further hacking around; I was finally able to get the
level of performance I had hoped for. Now I'm glad I didn't throw it out.

I guess I've been spoiled and just like to know where the activity is
without tuning or scanning...

If you want I can send you my ini file off list.
I had the exact same experience as you; I guess it doesn't come out of the
box optimized for the K3...

I have a K3 s/n 3569 (factory built) which has RF Board Rev 3. I have also
checked inside the radio to see that the IF output modification has been
performed.

My experience with the SDR-IQ is also disappointing. There are signals that
I can hear on the K3 (up to S4 or 5) that I simply cannot see on the
Spectravue panadapter. This is despite me setting the SDR-IQ to maximum gain
- but maybe I'm missing something too.

I'd also be interested to hear from anyone who already has the Rev 3 RF
board and has SDR-IQ on the IF output working satisfactorily (i.e. can see
weak signals!).

John G4IRN.

The modification information indicates that it was incorporated in

That modification will not void the warranty if done properly
(e.g. if you don't use a torch!). However, if you prefer to
avoid modifications, the Clifton Labs buffer is an alternative.
I messed up the link in the last response - here's the correct one:

With the age of this unit (#4249), I would prefer not to start modifying it

It's unfortunate for me that I wasn't aware of this short fall before

Unless you have performed the IF Output buffer gain modification

or use the Clifton Labs broadband buffer amplifier between K3 & SDR-IQ

what you see is entirely normal.

The unmodified K3 IF output is approximately 17 dB lower than the
RF signal input level.
