Using my K2 #4948 @ qrp ssb 9watts I worked 42 of 50
states on 80/75 meters. The microphone used was 600 ohm
impedance RS Highball II. Antennas used an 5btv and
dipole at 12' bent around an urban lot. Difficult but
doable. YMMV

Curt Milton wrote:
Very interesting question. When sunspots were good, i never hesitated even on 20m (unless there was a huge pile-up) to speak into the mic of my QRP K2. It rewarded me with lots of QSOs (using a vertical antenna).

Recently I decided to check out its IF filtering across busy bands in the ARRL DX SSB contest. The narrower settings on the main board filter did do a good job of reducing QRM, as it improved with each toggle from 2 to 1.8 to 1.6 settings.

Things I don't know are:

(1) How well the K2 shape factors of the main board filter compare to typical 1.8 kHz accessory filters in higher end rigs. Note these typically have a wide ~ 2.4 kHz or wider stock filter and a single selectable narrow filter.

(2) How well the K2 speech processor works in comparison to other rigs.

I have no reason to discern any limitations for these - i just don't have any information other than casual use.

At one time I thought that not having passband tuning (IF shift) was a 'big limitation.' But now I realize its only a big factor on SSB when your filters is wider than needed (as is on many lower end HF rigs). Some folk have set their SSB filter up to be a quasi-IF shift by having one oriented down and one oriented up on say a 1.8 kHz BW -- but I can't say this is the best use of the 4 available settings.

(Gee - I know the enterprise would appreciate you buying a second K2, but you can only do one mode at once. No reason why your existing K2 can't be a CW QRP machine, a SSB machine, and by flipping the lid also a 100w multimode rig. )

Thinking about building my 2nd K2. First # 54xx,
was a very sucessful build.

Does anyone have thoughts on how well the K2,
operates, by itself, as a SSB HF rig? It would
seem 15W is kind of pushing it for a suitable
signal - but just wondered if any successful
K2 SSB ops are around.

And I've always had this belief that 15W is not
enough to drive many or any amps?

Thanks,
Fred, N3CSY

[Elecraft] Historical pictures

2007-03-13 Thread RC kc5wa
Thanks Ron for the memories from the past. As an
(over-nite)EX-DJ I used a head set that was plugged in
to a FM Receiver instead of the control board. It
allowed me to hear my actual on-the-air signals as
opposed to the control board input to the transmitter.
It just made more sense and easier to quickly spot
transmitter problems. It also meant I was not tied to
the control board.

within spec's. It was even okay after adding the 30m

built and installed the ATU during the alignment and
test the first several checks on L0-L3, C0-C3, N0-N3
were okay! When I tried to calibrate the ATU Nada. I
noticed the PA was HOT. So was my DL. the SWR reading

dead. Audio (white noise)is there and strong so is side

Re: [Elecraft] KX-1 Q1 Bad - Now no received signal / RF Gain

operation did not seem to suffer

Rich Holoch wrote:

I had my KX-1 receiver working beautifully through the first 2 stages (up
through getting the receiver to work), then I added the last components -
for the transmitter. I turned it on to complete Test III, and there was no
received signal. Everything but the RF Gain control works. The audio gain
and and filter control respond just like before, keyer works, strong
sidetone and audio, frequency encoder works, bands switch just fine, etc.

I checked all components and sure enough - Q1 was in backwards. I tried to
unsolder and put it back in, but I am sure it was fried. After putting it in
correctly, voltage was OK on 2 or the 3 connections - the third was zero
volts. So the JFET must have opened.

I'm hoping that just by replacing JFET Q1, the receiver will work again. Is
it possible that by having a bad Q1 that that could cause no signal to be
detected in the receiver? When I look at the schematic, I almost think that
the receiver should still work even with Q1 out of the circuit - is this a
correct or wrong assumption? If it still should work, then there might be
more wrong than just Q1.

Thanks in advance.

During the past two years I've been developing a vector impedance meter for
evaluating antennas and it's also useful for discreet components or turned
circuits, like traps. I'm offering these now on e_bay. The item number is:
