[Elecraft] K4D order/delivery/price
>About 3 weeks ago, I ordered a K4D, and was surprised not to be asked for any money up front... Two years ago next week, I ordered two KXV3B modules. I paid in full up front. I have heard nothing directly since, only a few general head-pattings sent to this reflector. I understand that I only have a few weeks to wait. Frustrating. Lets not forget to be grateful for the "cannon fodder" and "Sunday drivers", without whom we wouldn't have many to work. Re: [Elecraft] OT: RF interference from grow lights.
Hi I had a similar situation here in Tucson AZ My spectrum analyzer,a Tek 492 showed groups of carrier like indications 10-20 db above the noise floor. First think I thought "Grow Lights" I was told that the osculator in a grow light is about 2.3 Mhz. The interference looked like it was every 2.3Mhz up the band. Levels were all over the place. Called the local Power Co and after lots of pleading they finally sent a tech to check it out. He connected up to my dipole antenna and looked at the pattern and concluded it was a ground connection proble. Got a crew out the next week and traced it to a pole out about 2000ft from me. The problem was radiating from the HV line for about 2 miles. Fixed the ground and problem solved. I had traced to one of three poles using a portable radio tuned the my main problem freq of about 5.2 Mhz and was able to hear the problem. The main problem was a loose ground clamp up on the pole. The power company also used an acoustic parabolic mike which pin-pointed the exact connector. [Elecraft] K4
Wayne et all My only concern before I order a K4 is how it will work with two high power AM transmitters near me. 10KW day,1kw night KVOI south of me and a 50kw day only KUAT AM north of me. At some time, I will need to borrow or rent a k4 for a week and see how it behaves The majority of my operation is between 2-3.5 Mhz, 4 to 7mhz, 7.3-10mhz, 11mhz to14mhz. I also use my radio on most ham bands. I currently use a K3 with all bells and 1000MP The MP seems to handle the intermod better then the k3 The intermod is not caused within the radios but cause by rusty chainlink fence, poor power line grounds etc. My antennas are not the problem. I tried a sharp cutoff filter for everything below 3.5mhz. No positive measurable results. I'll probably not get to ever visit, but if possible - I'd do it. I visited TenTec in the early seventies with my dad just after I got my novice ticket. The owner (Al Kahn - formerly of Electrovoice) gave us a personal tour. We were treated like visiting dignitaries. They were making the PowerMite QRP rig, Keyers and some other things. Re: [Elecraft] K4 Features and current K3+
A feature that should be included in the "K4" is a software addition that will allow one to send digital via the rear audio in connector while operating USB (upper sideband) with the front mike. I use the current K3+ on AirForce/Army Mars. I need to be able to switch from digital (M110A) to voice on a moments notice so can not use the digital modes. The mike is hot while transmitting digital. Most mikes leave the mike element hot. The PTT is a SPST switch. This means that you have to be careful not to have any noise in the shack while transmitting digital. If there is a way on the K3, service was not able to point it out. Re: [Elecraft] Strange speaker problem
Could it be this? I saved this item from a KE7X post. Worked for a friend with a similar mystery problem - VE7XF ... At one point Elecraft had to change the switch that cuts out speaker audio when the phones are plugged in so there is a setting in CONFIG:SPRK+PH that selects one of two action polarities. Tapping the 1 key toggles between PH.R SW- (inverted) and PH.R SW+. Try changing that. Re: [Elecraft] AC Power for the Station
>those "backstab" receptacles that electricians love to use because they are quick and easy do not have adequate contact stength and can overheat and cause voltage drops and a fire hazard. Here's a weird one: Two years ago, I bought a house that had been built in 1980, by the folks that I bought it from. No intermediate owners. Wired with copper wire (not aluminum). I'm replacing many of the AC receptacles because they are so loose that a plug falls right out of them. I've never seen that before. My previous house was built in 1970, and never had that receptacle problem, or in any other house I've ever lived in. Maybe a bunch of cheapy ones? [Elecraft] Foot switches
>>Why in the 20 century we need to use foot switch? I strongly agree. I HATE foot switches, because I'm very poorly coordinated... I love foot switches (Linemaster, of course!). Started using one with my Viking II for a faster CW changeover (instead of 3 switches) in 1958. Tried VOX when I got my GSB-100, but aaa I didn't like the aaa way everyone sounded when they aaa tried to keep VOX from dropping out when they weren't aaa finished their thought. Not to mention the clipped first syllable (I know, not on the K3). So it's been foot switch or computer control of PTT for me ever since. A total habit by now. [Elecraft] KPA1500 fan noise concern
I'm on the list for a '1500, expected sometime in August (maybe). However, I'm getting concerned about the reported high fan noise level. I currently have a '500, and following a suggestion a year or two ago, I've turned the fans around 'backwards' and they seem to be quieter in this configuration. I would give the '500 a "quiet" in the noise department. Temperature does not seem to be an issue. In addition, I have an Acom 1000, which is also a quiet amp - fan as well as relays. Hard to hear it in operation (but the 3 minute warmup usually seems like three hours. :-) I ordered the '1500 In the quest to be a couple of instant db louder, but if I don't hear some resolution of the noise 'problem', I'm going to put the order on hold until it is solved. I do have many headsets which I usually wear, including the Bose QC15 noise cancelling model, but I'd hate to be FORCED into using them. A concerned citizen. [Elecraft] PSU cable
I would appreciate it if the transceiver had bolted connections or at least double up the power poles What I have done in the past, (with cheaper radios) is to bypass the power connector, and solder heavy wires directly to the DC input pads inside the radio. The power supply end has ring terminals. Fewer connections, fewer ohms. I haven't looked to see if this would be practical for the K3, and still allow it to be disassembled. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ERR 12V
I had this problem with #1823 just after I returned from an expedition in 2010. (lucky, eh?) It is indeed a result of the steel pins carrying the 12v to the PA becoming tarnished. Not trusting myself to replace the pins, I opted for the "bypass operation" - wire jumpers around the pins (Elecraft can send you picturs and instructions). Piece of cake, and works FB. Elecraft replaced the pins on a second K3 with gold ones when it was in for service. Frustrating when you don't know why it happens, but an easy fix in either case. Only $10k and possibly a visit from the FCC! I had a factory built Heathkit Chippewa KL-1 amplifier back in 1965. A pair of grid driven 4-400 tetrodes in Class AB1. 10 watt drive for 1KW plus, plus out. 3-400Z triodes didn't enter the picture until 5 or 6 years later. [Elecraft] Fwd: Noise Blankers
Forwarded Message Subject:[Elecraft] Noise Blankers Date: Sun, 3 Sep 2017 13:59:59 -0400 From: Ralph McClintock <w...@comcast.net> To: k...@sdellington.us Scott, There are two NBs available in the K3. Have you tried the K3 DSP NB? Don't even tell me about the "NB" in the FT-1000. Been there; _fought_ with Chip K7JA at Yaesu about how bad it was until he quit responding. That was about 1992/3. Tom W8JI finally explained where Yaesu really screwed the pooch with their entire FT-1000 line NB wise. I went through every rig from 1990 right up to 2014 when I got my 2nd K3 and the latest DPS software. During that time I was fighting electric fence and power line "crap" on 160 meters, my main band of interest. The "regular" for lack of a better word, Noise Blanker, in the K3 is probably okay for auto ignition noise, like all the rest, but for what I faced it was the DSP NB that blew all the rest of the crap away. NO Problems with strong signal overload on 160. I could copy very weak signals right in between New England/NY big guys, and that is on my transmit antenna! The K3 DSP NB was, and still is, a game changer for me. Give it a try on your power line junk. In addition to DX Atlas and Logger32, I use the paper ARRL grid square map, overlaid with directional lines every 30 degrees true, for quick antenna pointing. Built-in antenna tuner (good for 3:1 SWR). Reasonably quiet fans. Separate p/s, or remote control head (space considerations). (I understand the difficulty of getting high power from the p/s to the PA.) I don't expect to carry it around, so weight is not a problem for me. Re: [Elecraft] k3s radio kit
>Pay very close attention to the screw lengths and sort them out carefully... >later you may need the 3/16" and the 1/4" is tooo long :) Amen to that, brother! After 50+ years of building radios, I built my K3 very carefully. However, on completion, the output was very intermittent. Tapping on the cabinet would trigger the problem. I tried everything, including on line and on-the-phone discussions with the Elcraft service dept. Finally, I boxed it up and sent it to the doctor. They diagnosed the problem right out of the box, with no tools. I had placed two lockwashers on the wrong end of the screws holding the driver transistors to the bottom of the case, so they made only intermittent contact. Bingo! Was my face red! The moral of the story: be careful, and check EVERYTHING during assembly. Re: [Elecraft] Shipping fully assembled KPA-500
Thanks Don, That is exactly the info I was looking for. I had shipped mine back, w/o xformer, for a repair last year but wondered how does Elecraft ship Factory built units. Ralph W1ZK On 6/25/2016 8:26 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Ralph, When a KPA500 is shipped for service, they recommend that the transformer be removed. It not only saves on weight, but it eliminates the possibility that the transformer will deform the bottom panel should the parcel experience a sudden stop such as at the end of a sorting chute. Elecraft does ship the factory KPA500 with the transformer installed. *However*, they use special extruded packing supports. If the person you would buy from has the factory packaging for a KPA500-F (or a K3-F), then it can safely ship using that packing and box. If that packing and box is not available, I would suggest that a piece of plywood cut to the same size as the KPA500 be placed directly under the KPA500. I normally suggest that packing peanuts are good for protection, but not for that much weight because the peanuts can be crushed, at least 2 inches of bubble wrap on all sides would be better. Do not use the large air bags, they can burst. The secret to good packing is to pack the object so it cannot move within the box. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/25/2016 8:01 PM, Ralph McClintock wrote: What does Elecraft recommend for shipping a built KPA-500? Re: [Elecraft] K3 NB problem
Eric, A great update to the K3/K3s would be a fully adjustable IF NB Width control. The available choices now are NAR/MED/WID with 7 degrees of level. Electric fences are wide pulse. I have observed that width vary based on the manufacturer and the quality of the installation; read - all terrible! This is almost exclusively due to inadequate (_non existent_) grounds, bare wire nailed to tree trunks, wire connections that are not really connections at all and the inevitable brush/branch/grass growth along the wire paths. All the JA manufacturers since the 1970s built 40lb primary station radios with noise blankers set to eliminate automobile ignition noise! ICOM with their IC-781 in the late 1980s added a width control along with the level control. Besides my K2 & K3 I have an ICOM 7600. The latest iteration of it's menu system allows adjustable NB level 0-100%, depth 1-10 (still not sure what it does; I leave it at 4) and width adjustable 0-100. With the NB Width control set half way at 50, I can eliminate the pulsing with a Level setting of 50%. If I try that on 160/80 CW chasing DX the pileup will blow the IF away. Increasing the Width to 75 and reducing the Level to 20% the fence pulsing is close to non existent but the pile up is not overloading the IF. [Elecraft] K3 feature request - Stop the KAT500 Relay Switch in Split
The KAT500 relay switch over between two in-band segments is driving me nuts. A lot of DXpeditions on 160 use 1823.0Khz for transmit listening up 1-5khz. Every time the K3 goes from A RX to B TX, and back again, it involves a cur-chunk from the KAT500 whether the tuner is in Auto or Manual. It happens where ever there is a segment boundary but is particularly annoying in the DX portions of the CW bands. Would it be possible to alter the K3's firmware to recognize a Split or XIT from the K3 as a Transmit on B VFO or XIT only? I know it would not affect owners of rigs other than the K3/K3s. It feels like a PIN diode problem to me. Any ideas I may have missed. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Second chance for VM M1-M4 memory saves?
Is there any way to enable an Are you sure? or similar prompt when overwriting a freq/mode with VM? Please don't institute such a silly thing on MY K3!!! I make that mistake occasionally myself, but give myself a dope slap, re-program the button and promise to pay more attention in the future.
