[Elecraft] K3 PSK-D Split Operation
Bud, I pursued this issue about a month ago and I called Elecraft. They acknowledged PSK D will not operate split. I was told to find a digital software program! It could be fixed but they were not interested was the impression I got. For me I like to use RTTY and PSK D in "standalone" mode (without a digital program running) usually chasing DX in pileups. I have a couple of messages in memory and it works FB for my needs. My issue was that RTTY will split in standalone mode but PSK D will not. Why? Why not be consistent? It seemed like a reasonable request to have Split operate the same for all K3 digital standalone modes. I was wrong. Fiddling around with RIT XIT works but it's not as convenient as Split. When DX says listening up, you xmit UP to play the game. 73, Ralph K1ZZI Date: Thu, 05 Jan 2012 18:28:25 -0500 From: "Bud Governale, W3LL" Subject: [Elecraft] To: When in Data Mode PSK-D (31 bps) I get SPL N/A when trying to operate split. Both VFO's were on the same frequency but could not get VFO B to go up. What do I need to do to go into split operation in this mode? Today VK0TH was operating on 28,121 MHz and listening 400 Hz up. I just could not get into split mode. 73, Bud W3LL w...@arrl.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 - PSK D Split Problem?
Using PSK D today for the first time ever, I was not able to get split to work. After setting both VFO's to PSK, then pushing split resulted in "SPL N/A" message? CW, SSB and RTTY always work perfect so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong with PSK? Is split invalid for PSK? Thanks. [Elecraft] New K3 & P3 Beta Firmware Available
Klaus, I got into the same situation you described here this morning. The K3 Utility would loop and wouldn't find the K3. The only way I could get around it was by disconnecting the P3 com cable and plugging it directly into the K3. Then the Utility connected and I was able to force the firmware load. The firmware load initially got hung up with the P3 being on. After turning off the P3 the K3 Utility still didn't find the K3. I plan to change my P3 power on option to NOT come on with the K3. I meant to choose that option initially anyhow but never got back to it. I think that will avoid this snag next download. Re: [Elecraft] K3 TXEQ
This was explained to me recently by an audio engineer. We don't want to waste energy transmitting sounds below about 300Hz. It's ALL wasted energy and it conveys no intelligibility. There's a lot of "trash" below 300Hz, room noise, fan noise and breath pops etc. The recommendation is to set the first two TX EQ octave bands (50Hz and 100Hz) for maximum cut @ -16dB and set all the other bands flat @ 0dB. It works FB for me. The reports are good. [Elecraft] RIT Power On request / Suggestion
NAQP was the first contest with my new K3 - 2169. First thing I noticed was I couldn't turn on the RIT while in XMIT. Once the RIT was turned on, changing bands turned the RIT off. Especially in a CW contest it would be nice to be able to turn the RIT on during XMIT (because I forgot to turn it on before starting to call CQ and need to be ready to jump when I go back into RX). Once on, the RIT should stay on until you shut it off or power off the K3. Changing bands shouldn't turn it off either. Just my wish and opinion. 73, Ralph K1ZZI___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY setup with MMTTY
I only use one serial port here running FSK/MMTTY under N1MM and it controls my K3 perfect (FSK D). 73, Ralph K1ZZI Date: Sun, 4 Jan 2009 14:33:08 -0500 From: "Richard Ferch" Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY setup with MMTTY To: Message-ID: <08342ce06e7c45e2bbdc1b2448854...@workstation2> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Julius, If you want to use FSK without giving up radio control you will need two serial ports - one for radio control and one for FSK keying. You cannot do FSK on the same port as radio control (unless you are using the KY; software command, which the vast majority of software, including MMTTY, does not support). If the port you use for FSK is a USB-to-serial adapter rather than a true serial port, you will need to use the EXTFSK plugin for FSK. In MMTTY you must configure a serial port for PTT (different from the radio control port) in order to use FSK. However, you don't actually have to use this port for PTT; you can configure it, enable it for FSK, and then just not connect aany PTT line to DTR or RTS. MMTTY gives you two other alternatives: you can do PTT either by software control or by keying DTR and RTS on the radio control port. If you use MMTTY's PTT port for FSK and/or PTT, both FSK and PTT will require keying transistors, because these inputs on the K3's ACC connector are TTL-level, not RS232 (FSK from TxD via a keying transistor to pin 5, PTT from either DTR or RTS via a keying transistor to pin 4). If you choose to do PTT using the radio control port (either DTR or RTS), you will not need a keying transistor for this line, because this is an RS232-level input on the K3. For the radio command protocol, just choose Kenwood. The K3's AFSK A mode is operationally equivalent to FSK D, but does not require an FSK keying circuit; instead, you need an audio cable between the sound card's line out and the radio's LINE IN jack. 73, Rich VE3KI ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and CQWW @ W8JI's
I had the pleasure of operating SOSB 80m @ W8JI's. We had a complex matrix of phased Beverages hooked up to his K3 in diversity mode. Typically I had one Beverage locked on EU and the other ear would scan other Beverages. When the JA path opened up I had two separate Beverages listening NW. The first time you hear this your jaw drops. The noise floor was so low I could hear a pin drop. JL1TS called in running 5 watts (yes on 80m with wall to wall signals) and I counted 112 JA stations worked during our first sunrise. I normally run a FT-1000MP MKV and I have used W8JI's MKV's at his QTH in the past. What struck me immediately with the K3 was how quite it was with wall to wall LOUD stations. There was no IMD or junk noise going on that is always present on the MKV (with INRAD roofing filter) during a contest. I put the K3 in Passband mode (PB) and cranked about 450hz in on the filter. Working up the band S&P was like using a laser. I couldn't believe it. I never recall a problem pulling out a DX station. Like picking apples off a tree. What a pleasure. Occasionally I experience something strange that I can't explain with the sub RX (right ear). Sometimes right after xmit I could hear clear CW signals in the sub RX. I though someone was jumping onto my QRG. I used the RIT after each CQ. As soon as I touched the RIT the signal cleared. I told the first 3 ghosts to QSY before I realized it was a ghost signal. It cleared as soon as I turned the RIT. I was talking to myself which happens enough without my radio. Sometimes when transmitting I could hear CW signals in the sub RX during the exchange. If anyone can offer an explanation I would be interested to hear it. Tom thought it might have something to do with PB mode but that discussion was after the contest so I didn't get a chance to try it with the PB off. Re: [Elecraft] Attentuation
I just received my K3 last week (#2169) so I'm just getting used to it. My FT-1000MP MKV had a 3 position anttenuation selector 6, 12 and 18 dB. Many times I had the 18 dB pad cranked in on 160m. I know it's only one S unit difference from the K3 but sometimes it's just what you need to pull it out. Wish I had more than one ATT choice. 73, Ralph K1ZZI Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2008 12:41:43 -0800 From: Lyle Johnson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Attentuation To: Ken Widelitz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed > How much attenuation does the Attenuator put in line? [Elecraft] K3 Ready in 2.1 Months but long QRX on KRX3
Placed my order September 1st and I was notified yesterday it will be ready to ship in approx 1 to 2 weeks! However, the 2nd RX is back ordered. The KRX3 eta is an additional 3 to 4 months out (ouch). So I'm looking at 5 to 6 months to receive the complete initial order. Huge backlog right now on the KRX3. To Elecraft's credit everybody wants one. They are working diligently to improve the delay.
