Re: [Elecraft] K3 and whats next from Elecraft

2013-08-27 Thread Randy Hall
Hi

How about a K3 box that has 50/144/432 on the main board and slots that
would take 29 MHz, 70 MHz, 220 MHz, 1.296 MHz and other band sub-modules?

I'm sure Ron AC7AC's ideas were somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but think of the
 possibilities, all within reach:

 1. Voice operated - K3, go to 14313 USB, tune the antenna, and set output
 power at 100 watts

 2. Voice recognition - the K3 scans the bands looking for a SSB signal,
 then
 detects the operator's call sign.

 3. Content filtering (aka Snowden mode) - same as 2 above, but the K3
 stops
if it hears a call sign from a list input by the operator.

 4. Cognitive radio - the K3 scans the bands for a signal, then determines
 its
characteristics (CW/USB/LSB/AM/FM, digital details) and set itself up to
 match.

 5. Heads-up display.

Y'all are thinking too small. I expect that the next generation will be
voice operated, to be followed by a rig that won't require any input from
the Ham. Since you are the licensee, it will just text you with a
 summary of
the QSO's that it made on your behalf each day. But then, one day, we'll
 be
able to apply for licenses and take the exams on-line so the rig log on
 and
get the license and we humans won't have to bother ourselves with what
 the
  rig is doing.

Re: [Elecraft] Free DV (digital voice as reported in QST-Aprilissue)

2013-04-03 Thread Randy Hall
This is what is so great about getting a sound card interface working with
a radio. Once you do that, it opens up opportunities to use many of the
'digital' modes, as they all use the same sound card interface. PSK31, SSTV
(using MMSSTV), RTTY (using MMTTY), Hellschreiber, Digital Voice, Digital
SSTV and many many more, You can find free software for all of these
modes.

I have several PSK-31 videos on my YouTube channel, just search for my call.

Have fun, see you on the waterfall...

Digital slowscan uses tones, just like AFSK, PSK31, or any other
soundcard-based mode. It does not use analog, continuously variable tones,
like original slowscan, but discrete tones, like AFSK. It does not use a
bandwidth wider than a standard SSB signal, about 2.5 - 2.8 khz. In fact
when I receive digital slowscan I narrow the bandwidth to remove
 interference.

The worst our frequency offenders are the daily social nets found
throughout the phone allocations. One frequency on each band does not
strike me as frequency hogging, and it does allow the few users of a mode
to find one another. In the case of PSK31, it allows many times more QSOs
to be possible in the approximately 3khz segment used.

 Monty K2DLJ

I am concerned with the creepage into our phone bands of wide digital
 modes with
their raw audio when tuning in SSB mode. The occupants of these frequencies
are also typically very protective of their frequencies and tend to be
 intolerant of intruders.

Well done to all, looking forward to future additions and enhancements.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft at Pacificon, CA, Hamfest this weekend

2010-10-18 Thread Randy Hall
Well, Dayton gets 20,000 people, Pacificon had maybe 2000. Not as
large. I feel the forums are better at Pacificon, as they have more
forums and rooms than Dayton. There are a lot of smart hams in the bay
area that really support the forums. The commercial and flea market
areas are not as large as Dayton.

I am not sure if next year is the ARRL National at Pacificon or the
year after. I arrived a bit late during the ARRL forum to catch that
bit of data. When the show is the ARRL National convention, they bring
the ARRL Expo, which I believe is the same as they setup at Dayton.
Next year is the new larger hotel!

I really like Pacificon, I go mainly for the forums to learn something
new. I enjoyed Gordon West at breakfast - great way to start the
morning, Cliff Stoll dinner speaker, moonbounce, WJST, 2M path to
Hawaii, wG0AT and his goat adventures, and other great forums. Plus
all day Friday's antenna forum for $10 is a bargain.

I gave a talk on WSPR, filled the small room at 8 AM Sunday morning
with about 35 people.

Looking forward to next year, make your reservations early, as the
hotel and special events typically sell out. Pacificon has become an
annual three day event for me.

A big THANKS to the Pacificon crew!

[Elecraft] K3 ACC connector and VGA cable

2010-01-17 Thread Randy Hall
Hi,

I am starting to get the my K3 integrated into my station.

I am thinking about building a breakout box to bring several of the pins on
the ACC connector out to RCA jacks.

I was wondering if I just hack off one end of a standard VGA cable if the
cable has enough wires in it to get to all the pins on the ACC connector?
Or, get a 15 pin VGA connector and make up my own cable?

Comments from the K3 community?
