[Elecraft] Low power on 20m using the KPA100 option

2005-06-06 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear all,

last weekend I finished the KPA100 option, which is causing a little
problem. Everything
Is running well except power on 20m, where I just reach 50 Watts.

The QRP output is not affected, so I am quite shure that the RF path to
the antenna
through the LPF is ok. Just to be shure I have checked all inductivities
and capacities
of the 20m filter. They are ok including the used core types of the
inductivities.

Somehow I am getting the impression, that on 20m the PA doesn't get
sufficient driver
Power. My signal reports on 20m have been ok, except the "missing
50Watt". This issue
drives me realy crasy, because everything else is working ufb.

Any suggestions?

AW: [Elecraft] Low power on 20m using the KPA100 option

2005-06-06 Thread Renardy, Martin

Hallo Vic,

Many thanks for the info. I thnink I am dealing with issue number 2).

By now I am quite shure that the driver part of KPA100 option is
draining power on 20/30m avoiding the last stage to reach full
Power.

I am going to ask Gary.

Martin

If you are getting 10 watts output when you set the power control to 10
watts, check the current draw at this power level by tapping Display.
You should be drawing less than 3 amperes in this condition. Check also
at 11 watts, with the KPA100 on. It shouldn't be much higher. If it
is, you may have problem (2) below.

I found two problems in my K2/100 which caused slightly (in my case)
reduced output on 20 meters:

1) the bandpass filter tuning trimmers were both at maximum capacity.
Adding a few pf in parallel with them allowed the QRP portion of the K2
to develop more drive for the KPA100 with less current draw.

2) There is a known issue with some new KPA100s that the amplifier
requires abnormally high drive on 20 and sometimes 30 meters. This
causes high current draw in the low-power stage and inability to reach
full output. Gary at Elecraft was helpful to me about this

AW: [Elecraft] Low power on 20m using the KPA100 option

2005-06-07 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear all,

I have got the answer from Elecraft that C80 and C81 in the KPA100 driver
section should be increased to 5600 pF. I had
already soldered 2 additional 4700 pF caps parallel to C80 & C81, which cured
the problem for me. I will reduce the
capacity of C80 and C81 down to 5600 pF later.

[Elecraft] Safe continuous power level of KPA 100/ transformer design

2005-06-07 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear gentlemen,

I have two questions regarding the KPA 100 option:

1) What is the safe continuouse power level, which can the KPA 100
deliver for example for one hour?

2) How does the PA transformer work? Somehow the cores itself seem to be
the primary input of the
transformer?

[Elecraft] KPA100/ Spring clip at rear shilding is colliding with RFC10

2005-06-08 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear all,

I have a minor mechanical problem with one of the spring clips of the
KPA100
Shielding, which should enshure good electrical contact with the K2
case.

The spring clip at the rear side od the shielding is colliding with
RFC10, which
is soldered between the antenna connector and ground.

Because space is narrow it's difficult to move RFC10.

Has sombody solved this "problem".

AW: [Elecraft] KPA 100 Power Calibration SWR Question

2005-06-08 Thread Renardy, Martin

Hallo Jonathan,

I have done the calibration last weekend and I am getting a SWR of 1.0-1 on all
bands. I have used the
build in dummy load of my MFJ 949E antenna tuner. I would blame the dummy load
too.

You can maybe carefully use a tuned antenna at low power levels just to verify?

I have just completed the Power Calibration (R26 andf R27) on my KPA100. The
SWR shows 1.0-1 on 40 and 80M, but then goes up from there. It is 1.5-1 on 10m
and power output as indicated on my external power meter shows power declining
as the SWR is increasing. I am using an MJF 264 dummy load which is not the
best. Any thoughts? Could I just be seeing a poor load?

Hallo Brent,

I am member of the "low power group" ;-)), which have had some problems with
low power from
The KPA100 on 20 and 30m. If you are ending in a high current message on 20 not

C81 in the
PA driver stage. The official value is 5600 pF.

AW: [Elecraft] KPA100 Hi Current on 30M

2005-06-13 Thread Renardy, Martin

Hallo Jonathan,

Welcome to "the low power group". I was running into the same problem a couple
of
days ago. If the problem is just on 20m/30m and your are shure that you didn't
mixed the gray and black toroid cores, than add two capacitors parallel to
C80, C81. I have tested it with an other 4700 pF, which I soldered parallel to
C80, C81 at the bottom of the PCB. The problem has gone and I have now 115 Watts
Also on 20! The official fix is to increase C80, C81 to 5600 pF.

Hi Jonathan:

You may well have joined "the group." But first...

Make sure that you can get at least 10 watts output on all bands with the
KPA100 turned "Off" in the menu. Then you should recheck the power calibration
procedure for the KPA100 unless you are very confident that it is correct.

If both of those check out OK, then you are probably experiencing the same
thing that several others (with you I think there are now 9) that are having
pretty much the same problem. Elecraft and the designer are working on the
problem and I'm sure there will be a solution soon. In the meantime, one of the
things that has worked for some is to increase the capacitance at C80 and C81
between T1 and the bases of the PA transistor. Some have changed to 5600 pF,
some have added another 4700 pF, and I ended up adding 2200 pF. One ham in
England who had the problem replaced C80 and C81 with new 4700 pF caps from
Elecraft and the problem remained. He then purchased locally and installed
replacement new metal film resistors to replace R19 and R20 and new 4700 pF
caps to replace C80 and C81 and the problem was completely resolved for him. It
suggests that the provided resistors may have enough inductance to resonate
with the 4700 pF cap and create a "trap" at around 10 MHz.

I encourage you to report the problem to Gary <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> so that they
are aware that there is another builder with this problem.

73,

Ken K3IU

AW: [Elecraft] stranger than real life (really metric v imperial)

2005-06-13 Thread Renardy, Martin

Now I understand why the english and scots and wesh are sticking
to the pint!!

A pint is bigger and so you are getting drunken faster than in
Germany. And time is money ;-).

The big danger is mixing the metric with the non metric system.
Maybe you know that one of the NASA mars probes has been shot
beside the planet mars because of mixing metric and non metric.

Next time the space shuttle will maybe land on my antenna!??

Not quite right. Us English (and the Scots and Welsh) still use the
imperial system for the important parts.

Beer still comes in pints, we drive at miles per hour, our doors are
six foot six high and so forth. Even when we are forced by Europe to
use metric units, we mix things -- for example I recently bought
stuff for a building project which included a two metre length of 2
by 1 wood (where the cross section is still measure in inches) and a
one metre section of 2 inch (diameter) plastic piping.

It is true that we've been forced to weight foods in metric but that
has led to weird things like it being (technically) illegal for your
butcher to offer sausages at a price for a pack of six -- he has to
offer them at so much per kilogram!! The petrol stations are forced
to sell us petrol and diesel by the litre not the gallon -- but that
was a government trick to avoid us noticing that the price had gone
up fivefold. Funnily enough most gas tanks still hold 10 gallons not
a round number of litres.

The good news is that it is still illegal (in England anyway) for
road signs to be installed that are in metric units and not including
their imperial equivalent. Bridge heights are still in feet and
inches and even if some Europe loving authority decided to use the
French system, they have to put the imperial distance too -- or
suffer quite a large fine.

As someone else mentioned, I've used metric units for scientific work
for most of my life, but I still think of temperature in Fahrenheit,
distance in miles, fuel consumption in miles per gallon, meat in
pounds and beer in pints -- the latter most often!!

[Elecraft] Problems because of filter switch during CW operation K2

2005-06-15 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear KW2 CW operators,

yesterday evening I was running into a problem during CW operation with
the K2. I called
CQ using the 1.5 KHz CW filter on 20m and got response from a couple of
US stations.
The signals have been quite weak ( RST 33 ), but I have managed to copy
a call sign and
to give answer.

Because of sudden QRM I switched to the 700 Hz filter but lost the
signal. I have had big
difficulties to "find" the signal of the US station within the 700 Hz
filter. So I switched back
to the 1.5 KHz filter and lived with the QRM.

How can I align the CW filtes, so that I can switch to the narrow CW
filters without
losing the signal?

By the way: It was very impressive again, how powerful CW is under
difficult conditions!

[Elecraft] Problems because of filter switch during CW operation K2/ Filter FL4

2005-06-17 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear all,

I ran through the K2 filter aligment considering all your tipps and
tricks. I also adjuest the reference oscillator
on the control board again. My filter bandwidths are 1.5 kHz, 700 Hz,
500 Hz and 200 Hz (Filter FL1 to FL4).

I have used Spectrogram to align the filters. The settings are matching
with zero beat tests on a carrier.

Now Fliter FL1 to FL3 are working perfectly. I can switch through the
filters and the tuned signal stays with
maximum amplitude in the filter with minimum frequency change.

The strange thing: Filter FL4 was not working. So I have set it's
bandwidth to 2 kHz and analysed the passband
By tuning over a carrier observing the peak in spectogram. I have seen,
that the center frequency of FL4
is different from FL1 to FL3!

How can that be, because the Filter settings FL1 to FL4 are controlling
the same electrical filter?!?

Hello fellow Elecraft addicts -
I've been using my Icom 706 a lot lately while I build the amp for my
K2. As an 18- 20wpm cw novice I seem to have FAR more difficulty
SENDING cw on the 706 then I do on the K2. I could swear it's not my
imagination. After 30min on the 706 - a switch over to sending on the K2
makes it feel like I just "jumped into a Formula I from an old truck."
Are there factors that make one radio far easier to send cw with than
another or is it just my imagination? If so - what are the factors that
affect how sending cw "feels"? Thanks folks.

seems high to me when I read what is quoted in the K2 Manual. Can anyone

seem to remember having about 150mA for the first stage of the building. I have

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this but the time for my K2 to switch
from transmit back to receive in the SSB mode seems a bit lengthy. It's
probably in the 200-400 mS range which is annoying. Am I missing a menu
controlled item or is something wrong?

Any insight would be appreciated.

After logging 147 contacts during FD at the 5W level, this issue became very
annoying.

Thanks

AW: [Elecraft] Ser 4993 - First Problem

2005-06-30 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear all,

this is an important point, because I became a little bit sweaty after
installing
the LCD, when I realized, that I don't have access to U1 anymore.

In the manual there should be a big warning: "Check soldering of U1" before
installing the LCD itself.

Regards

Martin

Tim,
The item you should check is that you have soldered pin 1 on the K2 Front
Panel LCD driver U1.

I did miss this when I built my K2 as did a number of others. Not sure why
this happens. Pin 1 of all IC on the PCBs are different being a circular
copper track, though that is no answer why it is missed in the soldering.

The pin 1 on front panel U1 can be inspected with the board removed. However
due to the front panel switches and the LCD display positioned above it is
rather difficult to get a soldering iron in to solder the pad.

Some builders have removed the LCD to access the pad. As I had concerns in
damaging the LCD in the removal, ended up cutting a tiny "V" out of the
plastic corner on the lower edge of the IC socket, just enough to get a very
small
soldering iron bit to the pad there and solder the pin. The IC socket plastic
removal is not seen as it is hidden when assembled.

AW: Re [Elecraft] KPA100 - left, right, counter clockwise?

2005-07-05 Thread Renardy, Martin

Hallo Allen,

I have had the same problem when building the KPA100. The orientation
of the pot has not been defined and so you realy can't say which the
right direction is.

If the clock would be transparent without digits you would run into
the same problem.

One would think that clockwise for a pot would always be the same. A clock
does not turn counterclockwise just because one looks at it from the back.
My left arm is always my left arm no matter the orientation of a viewer. A
manual writer should say: " the end of R6 on your left as looking at the
circuit side of the PCB" etc. This is a little long winded. I built a
KPA100 and had no difficulty understanding the instructions so Elecraft
makes pretty good manuals for the most part. The manual for the DSP could
stand some improvement.

you can create a rule within outlook, which moves every message containing the

AW: [Elecraft] K2/100 Assembly

2005-07-13 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear Frank,

As far as I remember you will build and test the K2 first without options. If
everything is ok, you will install for example the KSB2. During that
installation you will have to remove solder bridges and a capacitor, but this
is described in the manual of the KSB2.

I am going to order a K2 with a number of the options. I have also downloaded
and read the assembly manual for the K2 as well as the KSB2 board for example.
The assembly and installation instructions for the KSB2 instruct you to
disassemble part of the rig for the installation of the board. Is there any
coordination instruction given for building the rig when you are installing the
options at the time of rig assembly? Frank WY3D

AW: [Elecraft] Problems = Alignment Part III K2 #4993

2005-07-14 Thread Renardy, Martin

Hallo Tim,

I don't think that you do have problems with the power supply. How do you run
the power test? Do you use
a dummy load with a SWR/ Powermeter?

Do you align the band filters for every band?

Betreff: [Elecraft] Problems = Alignment Part III K2 #4993

Well, everything went fairly well up to the part III alignment. I was able to
get slightly over 2 watts during the first few steps of the alignment. However
during the next steps, I get higher current than I should, and the max out is
about 5.5 watts even with the current cal set to 3.5 amps.

3 watts = 1.1 amp
4 watts = 1.8 amps
5 watts = 2.4 amps

I have checked and swapped power supplies, changed power cords, and set current
cal to 3.5 amps, but the max output seems to be about 5.5 watts. I get "Hi
Current" indication even with the current cal set to 3.5.

I would appreciate any insight, I have visually checked everything of course
and don't see any obvious problem.. I looked at the troubleshooting section ,
but it seems pretty generic, I'm hoping someone might have run into this
problem before and could point me to the right area to check...Any ideas?

Thanks
Tim

[Elecraft] KDSP option

2005-07-19 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear all,

I am using the K2 DSP option from the beginning, which is (technically)
working fine. But I am constantly
switching it off, because it's swallowing weak signals (especially CW
signals).

I am using the default values of the DSP option. Does anybody has
experience how to use the DSP
digging weak signals out off the noise?

Best regards

Martin, DL6KMR

AW: [Elecraft] Oscilloscope

2005-07-25 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear all,

those tutorials are excellent! By the way: You can hardly expect that you can
easily
use a oscilloscope without training and reading documentation.

And to make it even worse: There are much more complicated instruments like
network
analysers or logic analysers, where you have to study electrical engineering in
order
to understand what you are measuring at all!

AW: [Elecraft] Help: 20m died on K1 #1866

2005-07-28 Thread Renardy, Martin

Hallo Guy,

The best way I think is to do a signal trace from the antenna jack through the
20m path towards the load speaker. You may use
A simple x-tal signal injector in order to have a signal generator.

Everythink else is just guessing!

Transmit on 20m abrubtly ended after weeks of being operational.. No output and
minimal receive . Other 3 bands are operational with expected receive
sensitivity and transmit output power. 20m receive sensitivity has always
"seemed" inferior to other bandsI always assumed it was the antenna.

Here's what I've done:

1) I resolder all points on the filter board. All voltages on filter board are
with in range. All resistances on filter board check with manual requirements.
2) The transmit-mode DC voltages (pg. 46 manual) are all within range and the
same as the original test measurements during the first alignment and tests.
3) Confirmed b1-b4 band assignments were correct.

Any help in steering me to where and what to do next would be appreciated.

Thanks, Guy N7UN/2
