[Elecraft] Sherwood Receiver Tests

2022-04-28 Thread Richard Donner
Hi
I am no expert but as far as I can tell any of the top radios with
narrow dynamic range above 92 db would be fine in most environments. The
k4d was measured at 101.
A few years ago that dynamic range would have been considered fantastic.
I notice that the k3s is at 106. Who is going to notice that difference.
The ergonomics on the k4d is much better once you get used to it.
Everything you need to know while operating is plainly visible. For
example
I find I like having a real time UTC clock and date kept accurately
automatically. It is also nice to see the code speed and power levels
readily visible.
etc

Re: [Elecraft] Need help with kat500 utility

2022-02-23 Thread Richard Donner
Hi
Well I checked the antenna and it is just as before the problem.
Is the capacitor setting normally checked by default?
This setting was not chosen automatically.

After I enabled the capacitor setting the tuner tuned immediately to a
low SWR on the low end of the band.
I noticed that now it is automatically chosen.
This has been a nice study time to figure how this tuner works. It seems
fine now.
Thanks for the help all seems well.

On another note , my k3 has reached its 15 birthday year
Thanks all

[Elecraft] Need help with kat500 utility

2022-02-23 Thread Richard Donner
I have some question about the operate tab in the kat500 utility.
In the "others" what should be checked off?
"caps on the Ant side"
"amp key interrupt"
"attenuator"
Not sure what these things do.

I had been using my kat500 for years and all of a sudden low SWR matches
could not be found on one of my antennas. It was odd because everything
was fine yesterday.
I found by checking "caps on the Ant side" Ii could get a match in manual
mode.
I wonder if that had been checked and all of a sudden it stopped being
checked?

Also I wonder if the"amp key interrupt " was ever set properly.
How should it be set with a KPA500 amplifier all cabled up.
I did not see a simple explanation what these kat500 setting are for.

Any help would be appreciated. I think I am going for a walk

Wayne,
Thank you.
My main issue here is weak signals. There are no
ham stations near me to cause interference.

A good antenna is what I ought to have but that is not happening.

[Elecraft] Keyoard help

2020-03-21 Thread Richard Donner
I just bought a new Windows 10 HP omen desktop and it came with a funky
keyboard.
I wanted to use the function keys on N1mm but the new HP keyboard keys
are dedicated to speaker volume and other stuff. I tried the System Bios
to disable the Hot keys but that option was missing. There is also no
function lock button on the keyboard.

My old ( 7 years old ) previous HP keyboard gives some wrong letters.
For example typing M gave o on this new computer.
So with that in mind does anyone have a recommendation for a new keyboard
or maybe how to get my old one to work properly.
It likes I am going to have time for contests.

This is my first help idea. Perhaps your sub receiver is not connected
to an active antenna on 17 and 20 meters.
I have done stuff like that and pulled my hair out until I realized the
above.

[Elecraft] Sp3 a/b switch

2017-02-18 Thread Richard Donner
Hi
I was wondering if there is a problem using the A/B switch on the SP3
as a on / off switch for audio from the k3. The k3 would be on.
It seems like this would be ok but I am checking with the experts here.
Thanks Richard

[Elecraft] {OT} Alexloop Walkham Antenna

2016-07-12 Thread Richard Donner
Hi Stan
I own an AlexLoop and a few of us hams went into a park and did some
signal comparisons on 20 meters. We compared an
Alexloop, a full size vertical with four radials, and a 1/2 wave end fed
for 20 meters.
I used an a/b switch on receive and transmit.
The vertical beat out the other antennas by less than an an s unit. The
Alexloop was almost as good as the full size vertical. The only drawbacks
I see with this antenna is that it needs to be in the clear. It also has
a very narrow bandwidth maybe 30Khz.
On a SOTA activation making phone contacts on 20 meters was quite doable
with 10 watts last year. You will need an SWR meter with a needle to
catch the quick dips as you tune the loop.

 bye Richard

Could everyone give the weight of the entire kit?
Step on scale with and without the kit. That will give sufficient accuracy
for me.

Re: [Elecraft] Atmospheric noise increases

2015-07-24 Thread Richard Donner
I had a problem like that. I shut off all power to my house at the circuit
breakers. I ran my radio on batteries and noticed the noise went away.
By turning on the breakers one at a time the culprit was found. It was the
switching power supply for the cable TV.

Re: [Elecraft] Miniature self-supporting HF antennas

2015-07-19 Thread Richard Donner
My two cents worth. My favorite antenna for SOTA
turns out to be the 20 meter Endfedz followed by the Alex Loop.
I have done a receive comparison between the Alex loop , Endfedz and a full
size 20 meter vertical with radials. In this sketchy little test the
Verical came out best followed very closely by the other two antennas.

It was amazing to see how well the 3 foot diameter loop performed.

I guess I would like a 20 meter 2 elment beam that sets up in 2 minutes and
weighs two pounds. If it could pop open and shut like an umbrella that
would work for me. Any ideas.
