[Elecraft] KPA-1500 ATU Problem?

2020-10-25 Thread Richard Zalewski
As I tune across the band the ATU Tune LED flickers. This is not just at
the band segments. ATU is working OK except some problem with ATU tune and
my exciter.

Re: [Elecraft] Free shipping

2020-07-31 Thread Richard Zalewski
My two cents. We all wish the best for Elecraft. It has been horrible for
them and all of us living with this cloud. Free shipping or whatever I
don't really care at this point. What I find fault with is the lack of
communication. How hard would it be to have a regular update on the
progress of the K4 box and other products? Even if there is no new news
just say so. I am sorry but the communication has been far less than
desirable. When I look at the Elecraft "stories" the last update on the K4
was May of 2020. The last update on in the newsletter was July 2020 with
virtually nothing on the K4. Please...as you can see from the
emails...just tell us what is going on. 99.9% of us are very understanding.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Cooling

2020-07-23 Thread Richard Zalewski
Firm believer in cooler is better. Also believe one must be careful not to
disrupt designed air flow. I purchased this :
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0059BCVXY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8=1
and put it on the desk to the side of the amp. Seems to aid in moving the
warm air from under amp and drops the temp 2-3 degrees C.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Thermal problems

2019-11-11 Thread Richard Zalewski
I operated the contest with over 1200 contacts. I never saw temps over
80c. I too have a low serial number but have installed all the firmware
updates. Only on 40m did I hear the fan speed get to a very high speed. I
was running about 1200w at all times.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 AND THE 403A 1A2R

Excellent point on the band data issue John. I was holding out for the
Flex amp but no tuner is an issue for me with my low band antennas. If
they ever put the tuner in the amp I will consider it. Will have to study
the band data issue.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 Cooling

2019-05-21 Thread Richard Zalewski
Has anyone noticed a significant difference in cooling and fan speed using
the wire bail on the RF deck vs just the rubber feet. I notice quite a lot
of warm air under the deck either way but with the bail down seems like it
should be better.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 changes modes

2018-08-16 Thread Richard Zalewski
I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with the KPA-1500,
TS-990. When running WSJT-X (USB) occasionally the 990 goes to AM-D1
mode. No reason I can see for it to do that. It does this in RECEIVE.
Just to be sure however I put lots of ferrite on all leads involved..

[Elecraft] First 6m Test

2018-07-22 Thread Richard Zalewski
Just finished a brief entry into the CQWW VHF contest with the KPA-1500.
Sure was fun with a few more watts behind the report. Everything worked
flawlessly. QSY from CW to SSB in an instant and again 0 problems. I did
have to buy the house next door to put the amp so I wouldn't hear it (no
not really). I did invest in a new Heil Pro7 and it was comfortable and
reduced the fan noise to next to nothing. So pleased with the amp.

[Elecraft] 6m REPORT

2018-06-10 Thread Richard Zalewski
First attempt to put amp on 6m. No problem with antennas our output but
display disappears after about a minute of calling cq on cw. At first only
half the screen disappears with "50MHZ and PWR" only showing. Then screen
goes completely blank. I have ferrite on everything between the power
supply and the amp except the power leads. Coax in and out have ferrite on
them. It does not come back after time. It requires a power off and on to
restore the screen. Anyone else?

Re: [Elecraft] 2nd Report

2018-05-28 Thread Richard Zalewski
Good discussion. For giggles I ran sound meter at my op position. About 1
ft below where my head would be so readings would be higher at head level.
Fan Speed Level (db)
1 50
2 59
3 65
4 70
5 75

So it is going to take some good headsets to help significantly.

2018-05-28 Thread Richard Zalewski
First major contest with KPA-1500. Overall VERY pleased. No glitches
other than a few operator errors early in the contest. Loving the amp.

Fan noise...another issue. Usually for a cw contest I use some old ear
buds. Not possible with the amp. Had to use the total ear muffs and still
quite noisy. Did not effect my performance but it is annoying. I can not
imagine what it was like before they released the amp to general public
when they changed the fans...made them less noisy??? Still needs some work
but at this point probably not possible. So looking for suggestions for
reasonably priced noise cancelling headset with mic if possible.

Hope we get full explanation of what gets changed in the next firmware
release.

Still smiling.

[Elecraft] My First Report KPA 1500

2018-05-19 Thread Richard Zalewski
Just finished my first contest with the KPA-1500. Unit arrived yesterday
in perfect condition. Packaging very professional. Putting on a new 220v
AC plug took the longest of anything. Probably made the first Q less than
an hour after the box was dropped off at the door.

Today was just a short CW contest (King of Spain). Everything was great.
The fans do come on rather quickly even in a CW contest but with my
headsets noise level wasn't objectionable. Will see when it comes time for
a RTTY or SSB test.

I did notice an occasional flashing of yellow and red in the SWR led
string. I watched my inline meter and it showed nothing during those
bursts so something is going on there. Believe this was noted by others.

I ran the contest with 40w of drive from the TS-990S and produced in the
area of 1400w.

So far quite pleased.
