Re: [Elecraft] Off-Topic: CW sending vs. receiving speed

2009-08-07 Thread Ricky Robbins
Is it logical to assume that a person's CW sending speed approximates
 their copy speed?

Well, it's *logical* - that just doesn't always mean it's true. :)

After a long period of inactivity, my copy speed right now is about 10
wpm, but I can send considerably faster and I have to keep reminding
myself to send at about 10 wpm to avoid getting it sent back to me at
a faster speed than I can copy.

I can copy faster than 10 wpm when receiving the standard RST, Name,
QTH, Rig, etc., but if you start telling me about your late
grandmother's bursitis woes or the cabbage worm grief in your garden I
probably won't be able to keep up.

The problem is when I'm sending with a straight key I tend to creep up
in speed without realizing it, get it back at the faster speed, and
then cut QSO's short because I always feel it's impolite to ask the
other fellow to QRS when *I'm* the one who sped us up in the first
place.

The aforementioned ticks me off (at myself), because I'm a ragchewer
and when we move off of the formula and get into cabbage grandmas is
when I start getting more interested in the di-dahversation.

I keep thinking the speed will come back, but I don't think it's
coming back at the rate it came originally some thirty years ago.

[Elecraft] K1 Transmitter Output Problem

2009-07-12 Thread Ricky Robbins
Building a K1, thought I was on the home stretch, but I've hit a snag.
I was on the transmitter alignment section, page 19 of the K-4
additional manual, and all went well for 10 Mhz and 7 Mhz. I switched
to 21 Mhz and didn't get the two watts out, but got P0.1 (like the
first steps of the Alignment and Test, Part II on page 46 of the K-1
manual when the filter board is not installed). It didn't vary, just
P0.1.

I checked the out menu setting and it had 2.0 watts. I switched
bands back to 7 Mhz, and now it only has 0.1 Watt output for tune no
matter the out menu setting; the same for 10 Mhz. All frequencies
appear to be within the allowed band (didn't move the VFO knob from
the starting mid position during this time).

Left it to start typing this question, wanted to go back and look at
exactly what the display read and all bands but 21 Mhz would now
output okay -- 21 Mhz still just P0.1. I went ahead and completed the
tune-up, skipping 21 Mhz (but starting with the 21 Mhz caps for 14
Mhz) -- wanted to try the radio out and will be using it on 40 meters
for now.

Finished the work (speaker, etc) and hooked the rig up through a tuner
to a dipole tossed into a couple of trees and, for the first time in
26 years for me, made a contact (my code skills, even with some
practice recently, are woefully rusty). After the QSO I did some
cleanup and rearranging (included unplugging the K1), then brought it
back up to try for a second contact; back to no output, if I go into
tune I get P0.1 on screen, if I try and transmit, no power out.

Any insight would be appreciated; probably (hopefully) something
simple I'm missing. First contact was a thrill, hope to get the
second before another 26 years go by. :)

Thanks for any help,

Rick

Re: [Elecraft] K1 minor stumbling block...

2009-07-04 Thread Ricky Robbins
Mike / KK5F:

This is THE most common and well-known problem
that comes up for K1 builders.

You MUST install a jumper at the location of RFC8 before voltage
will be available as shown in the voltage checks on page 30.

Well, the missing jumper had me as well. Prior to beginning work on
the K1 I went through and added all of the corrections to the manual,
but when I got to that page I paid no attention to my note. I guess,
as it wasn't a step but just written in above the section, it didn't
catch my eye. All voltages read correctly once the jumper was in
place.

Now I'm just waiting for a couple of missing capacitors and I'll be on
the home stretch.

Thanks, Mike, for helping me over the hump.

Happy fourth, everyone.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 minor stumbling block...

2009-07-01 Thread Ricky Robbins
I am building my K1 . . . .
at the DC Voltage check . . . .
passed the actual smoke test . . . .
I am getting . . . .

Interesting. I'm at the same stage and had the same results. I had
to leave it (last Saturday) and won't be able to get back to it until
this Saturday, but I had a good reading on pin P1-16, bad elsewhere.
I don't recall the resistor readings, though I did have some of them
as you suggested (say, 100K, reading much, much higher). I, too,
tried to be statically careful, using a wrist strap and static pad
during construction.
