Scott, The basic K2 KSB2 have no mods since the Serial number approx. 4000. The S/N now is approaching 6000. Elecraft is the only supplier of ham gear that I am aware of that has the guts to tell their customers about improvements they have made to their products and make the mods available to their customers. DO NOT sell your kits on ebay because of possible mods suggested by Elecraft. When you get your order you will see how easy the kits are to assemble and line up. You will not be sorry. Incidentily the KPA100 has not had any mods for about 4 years, and those just announced are not necessarily required in all installations. 73, Bob VE3XM K2 S/N 04575 K2/100 S/N 04031 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I have been upgrading the captioned K2 for a friend. I installed new matched xtals in the entire rig as well as the KSB2 module. The KSB2 now is not working properly on transmit, I can just barely hear the transmitted signal on my monitor receiver and there is no segment lit up on the bar graph. Bob I too have hearing problems. I find the audio produced by the stock K2 lacking. I built up an external speaker and amplifier using an Elecraft EC2 enclosure, what a difference! I used one of Tom N0SS's TDA2003V 5W AF Amplifiers. Two of the Elecraft speakers part # 5 wired in parallel are placed side by side on a piece of PC board 7 9/16 x mounted verticlly about 2 behind the front of the case. A 5 x 2 rectangular hole is cut into the front panel and is filled with perforated sheet metal. A filler panel 7 9/16 x 2 13/16 is made from another PC board and mounted verticlly about 2 3/4 ahead of the rear panels of the case. The area behind the speakers is filled with fibreglass insulation. The amplifier board is mounted at the bottom of the case at the rear and input and power plugs are mounted on the rear panel. Lee, I burn off the insulation using a GC brand Snap Vacuum Solder Popper. Heat the iron, melt a bit of solder into the hole into the tip end, insert the wire into the small hole at the iron tip up to the edge of the toroid, allow the wire to heat until the insulation burns off, about 2 seconds, withdraw the wire and you will find it tinned and perfectly clean except for the very top end next to the toroid. Scrape this crud off and your toroid is ready to insert into the board pads. A perfect job every time. Have fun! 73. [Elecraft] Re: Tenna Dipper
Jean-Francois, I would think that you would not be able to connect the Tenna-Dipper to your K2 as Don has suggested. The Tenna-Dipper uses a CW audio generator not a visual driver to announce the frequency. IMHO anyway, for what it's worth (not much). Fran, My K2/100 S/N 04031 KSB2 board is stock except for the filter width which is 2.5 kc. I use the Elecraft (Heil) MD 2 microphone. On the air reports I receive would indicate that my audio is excellent. Adjusting the filters in my opinion is the most important part of getting good audio response. [Elecraft] Re: (Elecraft) SSB microphone question
Hi Jeff, You will need a microphone with lots of gain. I use the Elecraft (Heil) MD2, which I believe is still available from Elecraft at a reduced price. What crystal filter bandwidth did you use in your KSB2 adapter? I widened the bandwidth in mine to 2.2 kHz by changing capacitors CA CP to 39 pF; CB,CN Open; CC, CM 27 pF; CD, CL Short; CE, CK 39 pF; CF, CJ 100 pF; CG, CH 39pF. Also be sure to use the Filter alignment instructions in the KSB2 manual on pages 19 20 to set up your filters. I do not need a pre-amplifier, and get excellent reports from around the world with my K2/100 S/N 4031 on SSB, which incidentily is the only mode I use. If you need help give me a call on the land-line (519) 656-9940. 73, Bob VE3XM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: What is a covered bridge?
Trevor, A covered bridge is a wooden structure built across a river or creek with a roof and enclosed and/or partially enclosed sides used to give protection from the elements, usually snow or ice. These were fairly common here in Waterloo County during the 18 hundreds, built by the Amish and Mennonites who settled in this area and in Pennsylvania and the Eastern States in the USA. There are still a few left and in daily use in this Ontario County. We live in Mennonite country here in Waterloo Region where the farmers of that sect still farm in the old ways using horses to haul their equipment and buggies on the roads. They still stooke the grain by hand. Their houses do not connect to the hydro (electricity) grid, although they often generate their own electricity using gasoline or diesel generators. 73, Bob VE3XM K2/100 S/N 04031 K2 S/N 02676 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Jeff, Congrats on finishing your K2 # 3375! Judging by the S/N you've had the kit awhile. Just a tip regarding programming your filters for SSB, be sure to follow the instructions in the K2SB manual, you will get much better results. Have you added the latest mods, if not I recommend that you do so. I recommend that if you intend to use the K2 extensively on SSB that you consider adding the KPA100 amplifier, it makes a real difference when you can be heard, 10 watts just isn't enough power for consistant SSB contacts. Keep us informed. Will look for you on the Trans Provincial Net on 7.055 mhz. 73, Bob VE3XM K2 S/N 02676 K2/100 S/N 04031 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Bon jour Jean- Francois, Congratulations on getting your K2 on SSB. Now you can check into the Trans Provincial Net on 7.055 mcs.and we can listen for your K2. Now, you must build the KPA100 to really get a big signal on the air, believe me you will not be sorry.
