[Elecraft] k3 6m birdy?

2009-02-16 Thread TMorton
I have a birdy on 6m. The KRX3 is installed. When in SSB with 2.7 hz
filter, the birdy goes from 50116 to 50119. However, if I put 50.118 in
sub rcvr and listen on VFO A on 50.115 and hit "SUB", there is no birdy
on VFO B. I am using a pair of stereo speakers/or stereo headset while
doing this. When I change B to A via A/B, then birdy appears...any idea
what's happening?
TI5KD was spotted on 50.118 and that's how I found the birdyI sent a
packet spot to TI5KD asking Keko to beam CX and listen on .115; that's
how I discovered the above. Transmitting on 115 and monitoring both 115
and 118.

[Elecraft] ElectroVoice 664 mic to K3?

2009-02-11 Thread TMorton
Hello,
I have a EV664 Dynamic Cardioid mic which I used with Orion II thru a
W2IHY box. The 664 has a four pin XLR plug from its' base.

Question:

1. Can I use this directly into the K3? Without using the W2IHY..

2. What are the pinouts to make it work with K3 into front panel?

[Elecraft] K3 Display voltage

2009-01-27 Thread TMorton
Thanks for the many responses, both private and via the forum. I
substituted a metered Astron PS and went directly from the PS to the K3
with Elecraft supplied power cord.. Now the measurements are:
100w 13.9v to 12.9v; 50w 13.9v to 13.3v. this I can live with...

My previous setup was the Astron to Rigrunner to K3...approx cable was
4ft from PS to Rigrunner and 4 to 5 ft to K3; PLUS, Rigrunner had
LP-100, SixPak and Steppir tuning relay...K3 is supplying power to
microKeyer II via 13.6v back panel accessory.

Pardon the pun but, voltage drops, "it all adds up"

Que intersante! I learn so much from the erudite members of this
reflector (look that up in your Funk n' Wagnalls!) Just another reason
why Elecraft is simply the best...

[Elecraft] K3 Display voltage?

2009-01-27 Thread TMorton
All this talk about TX IMD and monitoring voltage, etc got me to check
out my K3. I usually run @ 50w into small amp and I see 13.7V on rcv and
11.5 while xmit. If I run the power up to 100w, I see 13.7 and 10.8; do
I have a problem? I am using an unmetered Astron RS-35 into our standard
220v house supply.

[Elecraft] K3 MCU LD-cancel the emergency

2009-01-26 Thread TMorton
Well, got it working again so let's see what happened:

I went to website and saw where I did not have latest K3 Utility
software and it said to use this to download latest upgradeI had
simply clicked on my existing K3 Util and was surprised that the Utility
actually downloaded upgrades...dont remember when we went from "Beta
test" upgrades to Actuals
Grabbed the Prolific USB to 232 cable out of the drawer and set up
K3/computer (Apple running VMFusion and Windows XP)...computer created
new virtual com port (11) for Prolific...
Then back to K3 Utility to 'refresh com ports'...Hooray, it sees it and
then I clicked on "Send all new firmware"
And it started loading...whew...

Lessons learned...

After using 2.57 for several months I decided to upgrade to latest
software. Started the K3 Utility, V 1.1.6.3 and had it check the website
for upgrade.
This is from the K3 Utility log:

13:31:24 K3 Utility Version 1.1.6.3
13:34:18 Opening connection to ftp.elecraft.com

Turn the K3 off and back on, then re-try the firmware load.

I tried turning on and off the rig, of course by having to kill the
power supply and holding the Power switch on until MCU LD
reappears...along with flashing TX led.
I am using the microKeyer II as my interface and went to the K3 port (3)
and clicked on the "disable router inquiries" before starting the
upgrade process.
I did save the previous config using the K3 utility but now the K3 is
not responding to the com port so K3 utility is essentially dead...

[Elecraft] K3 w/WSJT 6m EME?

2009-01-06 Thread TMorton
I am setting up K3 for 6m WSJT and have a question about the mode to
use. Reading thru the setup guides and help section, it appears that
WSJT requires USB. I have tried both USB and Data A and both give me the
'piccolo' tones. Which is the preferred method? Also, should I run the
width control at normal USB (approx 2.70) or widest available? Mine is 4.0.
I will be running Acom 1000 and 3 ele Steppir w/extra 6m passive
element. I have a sked with W7GJ next week and if successful, hope to
QSO many others from the "Southern Cone".

[Elecraft] K3 Split Rtty ops with paddle?

2008-11-26 Thread TMorton
Today, PZ5TT was on 17 RTTY working split...I set up to accomodate 3 up
but when trying to send with my paddle, it would not key the rig nor
transmit. My 'workaround' was to use the A/B switch and work my timing
so he would see my 'print'have I missed something? When using VFO B,
I cant use the paddle to send RTTY? I have also found that after
finishing keying with the paddle, the diddle continues for about 3 sec
unless I tap XMIT to immediately stop...

[Elecraft] Dead K3 Hi Jacked thread...

2008-10-19 Thread TMorton

Gentlemen,
Pse read carefully. My original thread stated that the FACTORY built K3
was returned so that the FACTORY could install the KRX-3...pips or not,
doesn't matterdoes the factory not check out the rig before pushing
them out the door?
I have done more troubleshooting. I still have the HI RFI msg even
though there is no RF present in the shack...even turned off this
computer and nothing was emittingI cranked up the K3 Utility,
1.1.6.3 and see where the K3 was showing the older MCU 02.24; FPF 00.02
DSP 00.00 and DSP2 NA. While I was able to reload 2.46 the FPF
repeatedly failed...I would get:

FPF firmware failed at load address x.
FPF program load failed.
Neither DSP1 or DSP2 would load or verify.
I am stumped as to where to go next.
Ideas pse?

[Elecraft] Dead K3-more info

2008-10-19 Thread TMorton

Hello again,
K3 #250 here. I started up the utility 1.1.6.3 and the prg showed the
following: MCU 02.24; FPF 00.02; DSP1 00.00 and DSP2 NA.
I downloaded 2.46 and tried to upload the firmware. I had to do a
forced download and when it got to FPF, it failed as did the DSP 1 and
2. The Activity log shows:

Sending firmware file hppf0002.hix to FPF
Send FPF firmware failed at load address x
FPF progam load failed.

K3 still has no sound nor signals and HI RFI still in B window...

Off topic a bit but I think quite a few guys would like to improve their

I read in the Hints es Kinks of QST Feb 08 a tip on using MP3 player
using downloaded mp files from W1AW...sounds good so far. I downloaded
the mp3 files from W1AW into iTunes library and did sync with iPod Nano.
Does not xferI can play the code practice direct from iTunes but
want the versatility of taking walks with cw singing in my earsI
have moved the files into library files where other music exists and
delibrately wiped the Nano clean and started over. Still no luck on
downloading the cw files. The specs for Nano say MP3 compatible with 320

BTW, nice of W1AW to provide mp3 and text to check later or as a 'sing

When making the selection A>B then holding "Split" I notice that the

A>B...have I missed something? If not, why not match freq and mode?

when selecting F1 for CQ, it reverts to Apple commands. Anyone using
this config and have suggestion? Otherwise,it's pretty neat to be able
to run both MS and Apple software. The iMac handled the installation of
all the MS programs very well, with no hand ups nor blue screens of death.

[Elecraft] From CQ-contest reflector

2007-05-21 Thread TMorton

No sure of the author...maybe Bill, W4ZV???
Very helpful read...I got it from the FCG reflector (Fla Contest Group)
73
Tom K6CT aka CX7TT

FYI flwg is a an enthusiastic vote for the K3 for a new contest rig
as noted on the CQ-Contest Reflector..

which one would you buy?

(FYI my previous rigs - TS-930S, FT-1000MP, Orion)

I would choose the Elecraft K3 over any
existing rig, including Orion II, FT-2000 and IC-7700.

>What makes it better than its competitors?

#1 - Value. The beauty of the K3 is that it can
be configured very economically depending on what your
needs are. Elecraft has cleverly configured the K3 to
be modular and appeal to many different users:

1. Budget minded DXers who need an exceptional RX.
Include the basic K3, no ATU, KXV3 (for RX antenna
input) plus 500 Hz filter for $2149 total. CW filter
depends on IMD/BDR measurements but most likely the
500 Hz 5-pole will be entirely sufficient based on my
experience with Orion. Build one yourself for $1907.
(I omitted the ATU because I never use one...add $259
kit or $289 assembled if you need it).

2. Budget minded contesters who need TWO for SO2R.
Twice the above for $4298 assembled or $3814 kitted.
Nothing on the market will be able to touch these
prices for 2 top-performing SO2R rigs.

3. Those who need a truly high performance Sub RX
for diversity use or under crowded contest conditions.
K3 + Sub RX + KXV3 + two 500 Hz filters for $2825
assembled or $2525 kitted. IMHO this combination
cannot be duplicated by any competitive rig due
to the quality of *both* K3 receivers (pending full
IMD/BDR measurements of course).

4. Those who want a truly high performance
panadapter/bandscope using the K3's IF output to
an outboard SDR (e.g. Softrock 40, Clifton Laboratories
Z90/91 Panadapter, or eventually an Elecraft version).
This gets tricky to price but it's nowhere near the
$10k range of a full blown IC-7800 or FTDX9000. IMHO
a K3 plus bandscope using free SDR software will blow
the socks off either the 9000 or 7800 (just like the
SDR-1000 does).

#2 - Performance. The K3's front-end is
basically an RF clone of Orion, with down-conversion
to a 1st IF of 8.2 MHz (Orion's is 9 MHz) and then a
wide range of narrow roofing filters (down to 200 Hz).
This should put the K3 ahead of all non-SDR rigs in
IMD performance, plus Elecraft has apparently done
their homework on LO phase noise. We don't have
full performance numbers yet but here's a sample of
what to expect (Elecraft's comments below):

1. N6KR: "But just to give you a hint: a couple of days ago Eric measured a
blocking dynamic range of 143 dB, and it remained 143 dB at 20 kHz, 5
kHz, and 2 kHz.

To put this into perspective, the K2, IC-7800, Orion II, and FTDX9000
all have a blocking dynamic range of -133 to -135.

We can't directly extrapolate to IMDDR3, but suffice to say it will be
excellent."

2. WA6HHQ: "As an example, we're seeing third order IMD D.R. numbers on
20M at 20 kHz spacings in excess of 104 dB and 97 dB at 5 kHz with the
400 Hz filter ahead of the DSP. These numbers are much worse if you do
not use a narrow crystal filter (400 Hz used for this test) ahead of the
DSP. (de W4ZV - To put this into perspective Orion II has ~95 dB IMD
at 5 kHz spacing).

#3 - Ergonomics. I expect the K3 will be very
user friendly based on my experience with my K2. I never
cease to be impressed by its excellent ergonomics every
time I use it. I also feel we will discover that Elecraft
will set a new standard of responsiveness to user feedback,
and their firmware guy (Lyle KK7P) is *extremely* competent.

[Elecraft] K2 Speaker not muting?

2006-11-30 Thread TMorton

Hello,
In the CQWW cw contest I operated with K9VV as VP2VVV with K2/100 and
wire antenna. On Saturday afternoon while Fred was operating, I suddenly
could hear the K2 receiver even though Fred was using a headset. We
changed headsets and that did not mute the speaker. I vaguely remember
reading on the reflector about this before. I went to the elecraft
website and tried a search but to no avail.
Anybody got the solution? I find it hard to believe that the front panel
jack could 'wear out' this quickly. I have only used the K2 in contests
about 4 times and the headphones typically go in on Friday nite and stay
there until Sunday evening. Otherwise the K2 sits in a Pelican case
awaiting its' next adventure.
BTW, we made 2700 Qs including 64 countries on 80m. This was with 66ft
long sloping wire fed at the bottom and ground was 1" strap thrown over
the jetty into sea water. The K2/100 was routed thru the KAT 100 for all
band operation. We only operated about 34 hours as we did not want to
incur the wrath of sleeping xyls hearing both sides of cw contact so we
did miss some prime time(s) at EU sunrise plus our own sunrise...yes, I
know I could have 'popped' the top off and disconnected the speaker but
swimming in the ocean and having a brewski precluded any 'technical'
operations, HI.

Appreciate any suggestions,

[Elecraft] XIT

2006-05-29 Thread TMorton
I have been following the "XIT" thread and want to add my 2 Pesos. I
rarely use the XIT except in contests. Many guys/girls dont zero beat
and so they can be waaay off frequency. This past weekend during the
WPX contest when Searching and Pouncing (S&P) I would run across
stations who "CQed" in my face when I was zero beat and hear them come
back to stations as much as .20 below their freq. That's when I would
run the XIT down to match where their last qso took place and
successfully work the guy. Much quicker and faster than hitting split
in this case. Another time is when the other station has his filters
cranked down really tight and I have to move my transmit freq to get
inside his passband. Most contesters use 500 or even 700 hz filters when
"running" and let their brain be the final filter. It's amazing how
many more stations one can work using this technique!

I have a classic Electro-Voice 664 microphone. Does anyone use one with
their K2 and if so, what did you have to do to get it to "play" properly.

[Elecraft] 30L-1 Part?

2005-05-15 Thread TMorton
I have 30L-1 which is many years old. The Safety Interlock Assembly(s), (3
of them) have finally given up the ghost and broken off. I need a source,
any ideas? I have check w/Google with the Collins part number 547-3632-002
and Surplus Sales of Nebraska..no luck. The assemblies are copper, silver
plated and measure 11/16 x 3/4 in. by 1.312 in.
Other than have to manufacture my own, does anyone here have a couple
sitting in old junk boxes?
Tnx & 73

[Elecraft] K2 Roofing filter?

2005-01-15 Thread TMorton
The Feb 05 QST has review of InRad roofing filter for FT-1000MP series. The
article states, "the Ten-Tec Orion and Elecraft K2 are ham band only designs
and thus have their first IF and roofing filters in the HF region". The
article describes how Icom 7800 has roofing filters at 15 and 6 kHz and that
new Yaesu FT9000 DX will have 2 roofing filters at 15, 6 and 3 kHz.

The article further states, "Single conversion receivers, such as the K2,
can set both the roofing filter and selectivity with a single filter
following the mixer.

Question, what roofing filter default are we using in the K2 and how do we
change it? Or, is there any need to do so. I have noticed on ssb that I get
more intermod than during contest ops using cw.

[Elecraft] KPA-100 CaltPA?

2005-01-04 Thread TMorton
I have a question concerning the KPA-100 and temperature issues.

Took the rig to VP2VVV during cq ww cw contest in Nov. Ambient shack temp
was between 70 and 85 degrees F.

We were running big pileups @40 wpm during late afternoon on Sat and boy did
the top of the rig get hot! Later that evening when tempo slowed down, was
doing S&P on 80 and 40 and had one last big run around 11pm. Shut the rig
down for some sleep and other op got up around 2am and rig would not auto
tune (using long wire thru KAT-100) and he could only run rig below 10w.
That pretty much shut us down til I got up and hooked up spare FT897 but by
then we had picked up some knarly line noise and we pulled the plug and
played watersports w/YLs.

At first I thought that I had not effectively tightened down the PA thermal
pads but after sending email to Mr. Don, W3FPR, he suggested looking at the
CALtPA. I found that it had "reset" itself to 255C! Once I set the temp to
30C, everything worked fine.

My question is:

Why did the rig jump up to 255C? Any thoughts and has anyone else
experienced the same thing?

[Elecraft] K2/100 amp keying?

2004-12-01 Thread TMorton
I would like to be able to key an external amp with my K2/100. I see on the
web site a circuit and a reference to the AMPMODKIT to purchase the parts.
There I see a note that the parts are included in the KPA100 kit. However, I
don't remember building this and don't see a connection point on the back of
the /100 cabinet. Did I miss something?
