Re: [Elecraft] OT: Ground rods and concrete

2017-04-18 Thread Terry Posey
I expect that the Moderator will be ending this Off Topic soon.

However:

One of my clients operates a large 90 tower (all self-supported) microwave
system here in Florida. Florida is often regarded as the lightning capital
of the world. I have helped my client with repairing damaged (cracked)
tower foundations. Approximately $1 Million have been spent over the last
five years repairing concrete foundations that have embedded Ufer rods in
addition to an extensive external grounding system comprised of radials and
soil driven rods. No repairs have been needed to any of the tower
foundations that do not have Ufer embedded rods.

I have noticed that the damaged foundations cracks seem to appear after 15
years of service. This could be evidence of long term repetitive internal
stresses - perhaps stresses resulting from steam expansion of the concrete's
internal moisture due to repetitive high energy lightning pulses to the Ufer
rod. Of course, none of that thought is easily provable.

In the meantime, I do not include Ufer ground rods in any tower foundation
designs that I have professional responsibility.

Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card

2016-03-07 Thread Terry Posey
I use an Asus XONAR U7 with NAP3 and CW Skimmer on a Lenovo Windows 10.x
machine , attached to the K3 IF via LP-PAN2. Almost all USB sound cards are
quirky to set-up with your particular computer and your particular audio
applications. As for the "stuck" 48k sample rate: make sure the little
switch under the XONAR U7 is in the USB Audio 2.0 position, then follow the
guidance for loading the correct driver - do not let Windows load the default
driver.

I hope this helps.

Tom,

If the problem is only happening when the Asus U7 is the default soundcard,
then how do you deal with the tendency of the Windows operating system to set
any newly installed soundcard as the default?
Seems like a "catch 22" to me.
Yes, the specs on the Asus U7 are very good, but for panadapter use, it needs
the 192 kHz bandwidth.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] Who said anything about removing diversity? That would *never* happen...

2015-02-17 Thread Terry Posey
The list "din" over relocating the VFO LINK function off of the SUB RX
button seems to have subsided... The following comments are about LINK, and
not about the fabulous DIVERSITY function:

I am VERY pleased that Elecraft has relocated the VFO LINK function off of
the SUB button. Accidental LINK of VFO A/B during at least three major
DXpeditions has been a serious problem, which has probably cost numerous
DXpedition QSOs. During the heat of DXpedition operations, it is very easy
for even a well-seasoned K3 operator to get the critical hold timing on the
SUB button wrong enough to enable LINK. Then as the DXpedition operator
tunes his SPLIT QSX frequency looking for callers, his own TX frequency
moves up and down the band in step per the command of VFO LINK. The pileup
becomes totally confused, the QSO rate goes to ZERO, and the DXpedition op
does not realize what is happening. Most DXpedition ops are looking at
their QSX pileup frequency, not at their TX frequency, and the little
blinking decimal point is unnoticed.

I have mulled over this K3 LINK function for quite some time. In my 43
years of ham radio operating, I can only think of one situation where I
wanted to LINK my TX and RX VFOs: Early AMSAT OSCAR satellites with linear
cross-band transponders. But, for those who can find a need for LINK, I am
glad that Elecraft has retained that functionality - just not on the SUB
button

In diversity mode, the main and sub RX synthesizers are guaranteed to be
phase-locked to each other if the crystal filters selected for main and sub
both have exactly the same frequency offset. The offset for all 8-pole
filters is 0.00. The offset for 5-pole filters varies, and can be ordered in
matched sets for main/sub.

Re: [Elecraft] PR6 Clarification

2013-04-15 Thread Terry Posey
Hi Jim -

You are well on your way to 6m success with the K3/KPA500/KAT500/PR6 line
up. However, there is one more issue you will need to address in your
cabling system. The K3's Digout1 signal is asserted on the PIN 11 of the
AUX cable. That presents a conflict with the KPA500 INHIBIT on PIN 11 on
the cable bus between the K3, PR6, KPA500, and KAT500. PIN 11 needs to be
"interrupted" before passing the Digout1 signal onto the KPA500 and KAT500,
yet still sending the PIN 11 Digout1 signal to the PR6.

I purchased a HD15 male/female "port saver" adapter from the Web ($5) and
removed PIN 11 with pliers. Install the "Y" cable at the K3 ACC port, then
connect the PR6 to one side of the "Y" cable. Install the PIN 11
interrupter "port saver" adapter on the other side of the "Y" cable and
attach the HD15 cable connections to the KPA500 and the KAT500.

I hope this helps.

73,
Terry K4RX

I'm just getting going on 6m with my K3/KPA500/KAT500. I'm getting ready to
order a M2 6M5XHP. My feedline consists of 150ft of LDF5-50 to the tower
then about 40ft of Buryflex in the tower run and various pigtails. So my
feedline losses should be relatively low.

Based on various threads I've decided to go ahead and get the PR6 but want
to make sure I understand how to use it. It appears that it is bypassed
completely by the K3 on the transmit path to the KPA100 which then goes to
the KPA500 and KAT500 then to the antenna.

On receive the path back from the KPA/KAT is passed thru the PR6
automatically as long as it is powered and the RXAnt is selected for 6m.

So no fancy additional cabling required other than Power/Digout1 and the
RXin/RXout pair.

My Beverages will just connect now through the PR6 supplied input.

All good?

Re: [Elecraft] k3 filters and kx3

2011-12-14 Thread Terry Posey
The Elecraft KX3 architects should weigh in on this topic - a simplified
block diagram would be helpful. The KX3 roofing filter is likely a analogue
filter realized with precision op amps and operating at the KX3
low-frequency IF (11 KHz?) - not "baseband". The roofing filter is applied
prior to the ADC and DSP, and not at baseband audio frequencies, else it
would not be roofing filter, but merely a post audio filter.

Terry K4RX

No, the KX3 roofing filter module is completely different. It works at
"baseband" frequencies, rather than the 8+ MHz IF that the K3 uses. You will
not be able to use K3 filters in the KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 single band mic audio anomaly

2011-07-18 Thread Terry Posey
Hi Bob -

It is not an operator error problem, and it is not a microphone level or
compression problem.

I have experienced the same problem you are describing with my K3 on 6m.
The cause of the slow ramp-up of SSB audio (RF output) is due to the K3's
internal RF power automatic gain control. The K3 uses band specific gain
control factors to set the RF amplifier stage gains. These gain control
factors are calculated and stored during the power calibration process in
the K3 Utility (or by doing a manual single band calibration on just six
meters), as Joe W4TV stated. On 6m, the K3 Utility performs the power gain
calibration at 52.0 MHz and stores the resulting gain control factor for use
across the entire 6m band: 50.0 MHz to 54.0 MHz. However, if the K3 power
amplifiers or RF band pass filters are not flat (constant gain) across the
band, then the 52.0 MHz RF gain control factor will be incorrect at other
frequencies and you will experience slow AGC ramp-up to the target RF output
level. A faulty RF band stop filter was the cause of my K3's slow ramp-up
RF output.

If you are unsuccessful in eliminating the problem by running the power
calibration process in the K3 Utility, I recommend you immediately contact
Elecraft support.

73, Terry K4RX

>>>
As I am (almost exclusively) a cw operator, I had not noticed this until
recently. On 6 meters (and only 6 meters), when I first turn on the K3,
if I am in ssb mode, the audio level (output) seems to be very low.
However, as I continue to speak, it gradually (a few seconds) builds up
to normal output and behaves normally until I turn the radio off. I
suspect this is an audio issue, as I have full output on cw from the
first dit. SSB operation on other bands is normal. I set the audio
levels and compression using the operator's manual instructions, but
only after the output has built up. Are audio (mic) settings are band
specific? Should I do my setup from a cold start and not after the
output has normalized? I suspect this is operator error of some kind,
but just can't seem to sort it out. Anyone have any ideas?

  Ian,

1) You want your amplifier and its power supply to weigh only 36 pounds.
2) You want your amp's power supply to be a linear type rather than a

3) You want an amplifier that is the same size and shape of your K3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - NO SSB RX

2010-07-17 Thread Terry Posey
I think you are not alone, Bruce. I have experienced a similar SSB RX audio
loss on several occasions. And there seems to be no recovery other than a
RESTORE CONFIGURATION.

In my case, I keep my K3 M1 memory loaded with VFO A 50.110 USB and VFO B
50.125 USB, and M2 memory loaded with VFO A 50.100 CW ALT and VFO B 50.110.5
CW ALT. My loss of SSB RX audio seems to occur if I am working CW with the
K3, then press the M1 memory and hurry-press the A/B button before the M1
memory change sequence is completed (the K3's frequency and mode changes
from memory is not instantaneous). After the K3 settles down, the USB RX
audio is completely dead, but the CW, DATA, AM, FM modes audio still work.
I have also cycled through the bands, and the USB RX audio is dead on each
band. The USB TX audio seems to work; however, I have not tested for that
extensively. I have found no way to restore the USB RX audio other than to
RESTORE CONFIGURATION. This problem would be most inconvenient if it occurs
during a contest or a DXpedition. Do not leave home without your K3
Utility.

Something for Wayne to ponder over the weekend.

Now that this problem has occurred twice it is time to ask if I am alone.

One of my K3s lost all audio on SSB RX. It still worked fine on CW. TX was
fine on both modes. However, if I increased the Width beyond 3.0kc SSB RX
audio came back. When the Width was decreased below 3.0kc the audio was
again gone. The problem was not band specific - it occurred on all bands.
This happened last week during the IARU and again about 10 minutes ago.
Last week it occurred while the K3 was powered up and being used. This
week, when I it was powered on, it came up in this condition.

The fix appears to be a RESET. (Push NORM - power up - EE INIT) Then I run
the RESTORE CONFIGURATION from the K3 utility program. The K3 is then
back to normal.

My concern here is two fold. 1. This should not be happening. 2. This issue
could be the beginning of a larger issue that won't be fixable with a RESET.

Has anyone else had this issue?

lu, I understand how you conclude your personal equipment druthers - and
there can be no criticisms for those choices.

Let me suggest; however, that there is an "iron triangle" that most people
consider as trade-offs for purchases, either consciously or subconsciously :
1) Performance, 2) Style, and 3) Cost. In general we all seek to maximize
performance in whatever we wish to acquire or purchase, whether it be power
level, duty cycle, weight, distortion, and HF and 6-meter band coverage. I
will argue that Style is also an issue for everyone on some level - do we
really need to have any of our cabinets painted? What about knobs? Must
they be black? Knurled? Plastic? Metal? Ultimately, Performance and Style
are phase-locked to COST. The more you demand of Performance and Style, the
higher the Cost must be. Considerations of 1) Performance, 2) Style, and 3)
Cost, send our personal choices in the directions that suit us as we
individuals deem best. Those choices have nothing to do with the taste of
anyone's Kool Aid.

I have already acquired a high duty cycle, low distortion, 1.5KW amplifier
years ago. Now I would like a small, light, and portable HF+6-meter
amplifier for DXpedition duty. I personally will not consider ANY amplifier
that cannot Perform on 6-meters in a small stylish, compact, light, and low
distortion package. Your mileage does vary.

AGC-F and AFX On or Off, the dashes are slightly higher in audio pitch (i.e.
lower in RF frequency) than the dots. It's easy to compare by listening to
your own code in the monitor, which does not have the issue.

This is not a big deal to me...just a curiosity but it's interesting that
others noticed it.

Hi Rich-

I have been unable to successfully ftp download from the Elecraft Beta
software site since version 3.19, while using MS IE-7 or the Windows XP
command line ftp. I have not changed my PC software, hardware, or network
ISP (Sprint Aircard EVDO) - but, nevertheless something has changed
somewhere to cause my disconnect. Wayne was a gem and emailed firmware
update files directly to me prior to my travels to 8R1.

Ultimately, my Elecraft beta file FTP solution was to download a standalone
FTP client http://filezilla-project.org/download.php . Filezilla is
extremely powerful and features great configuration flexibility. In my
case, the Filezilla setting "ACTIVE Transfer" was the silver bullet for FTP
downloads of Elecraft beta firmware updates.

Good luck.
