Re: [Elecraft] Deleting Off topic email

2018-06-16 Thread Thomas Schaefer
Thanks for the useful information Don. I changed over to non-digest.

I use a Mac so I already have all radio list email go into a Smart Folder. I
created a rule to automatically delete any email that has OT in the subject
(ironically, this one). Hopefully we can ask people to give some serious
thought to what they write and if they must post something off-topic, to
include OT in the subject. Again, just a polite request—I’m not telling people
what to post.

I believe that takes care of this one so thank you all for your consideration
and the bandwidth.

We can now go back to discussing how FT8 cannot be used at Field Day
(with my K3 to make it tangentially on topic) or how my P3 makes a better pan
adapter than back in the day when I used an Kenwood SM-220 (and the resulting
30 post thread about how good the Kenwood TS-820 line was).

Tom NY4I

Thanks.

To avoid creating too many posts (and have this turn into a me-too off topic
post), if people respond to me directly IF THEY KNOW HOW to FILTER a DIGEST, I
will summarize and send it back to the list.

[Elecraft] Deleting OT

2018-06-16 Thread Thomas Schaefer
While inevitably I will hear from people that I should just click hit the
DELETE key, I get the digest form of this email list. One cannot really delete
only the OT posts when using the digest.

Does anyone know if there is a way to have the qth.net list software
automatically remove posts that start with OT in the subject?

I subscribe to this list to get information about the Elecraft line of
equipment (KPA1500 is the latest). I am not sure if it is boredom or lack of
other outlets that folks believe they can post things that have absolutely
nothing to do with Elecraft. For the record, as I have been in the Elecraft dog
house before for mentioning this, I am not suggesting what people should post.

I am asking a legitimate question if anyone knows a way I could mercifully
make it stop—short of unsubscribing and losing the actual useful content
otherwise. I suspect I could switch to individual emails and simply setup a
rule to automatically delete anything that starts with OT. Then just delete
posts by people that post things unrelated to Elecraft.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows a way to do that for digests.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Serial Number 207 delivered

2018-06-01 Thread Thomas Schaefer
A brand new KPA1500 Serial number 207 (ordered 10/16/2017) arrived safely
today. Great packing job and I was surprised the amp was heavier than the power
supply. But they are both lighter than I expected. Now I understand the handle
as they are each light enough to trust the handle.

Re: [Elecraft] Any KPA1500 received that were ordered after 1st day?

2018-04-04 Thread Thomas Schaefer
Thanks for the update. That is exactly what I needed.

As the point of my message seems to have been lost on many responding, allow me
to clarify. I realize no amount of discussing where the amp is will get it here
any faster. That was not the point. I simply suggested it was a question I had
every time a new “Amp received” message was posted. It was to satisfy my
curiosity which several hams are doing.

I also had a reason to ask in that I help maintain a contest station and a
remote station. The amp factors into our plans so I was trying to get a sense
of projects coming up towards the Fall and Winter contest season. If we are
already ploughing through the orders from the second week, that tells me
something different for station planning than where we are now about how many
minutes into the first day. Amp #52 was ordered 15 minutes after. Amp #56 was
ordered 43 minutes after the ordering started. And yes, I know that is not
necessarily linear as ordered came in from multiple channels.

Lastly, I would rather wait for a great product and will wait as long as that
takes because I trust Elecraft. The $6000 up front is not an issue as what else
would it be doing except drawing ridiculous interest rates in a bank? Of
course, if someone put the amp on a credit card and has been financing the
purchase at 18%, then I could understand the consternation—but let’s hope no
one that put a pre-purchase on a $6000 amp has to finance it long-term on a
credit card :)

Tom NY4I

[Elecraft] Any KPA1500 received that were ordered after 1st day?

2018-04-03 Thread Thomas Schaefer
I wonder if a better way to track how the KPA1500s are shipping (versus
shipping status page) is that when someone on this list reports receiving one,
can you tell us the day you ordered it? I saw a report of serial number 56
which I assume is still a day one order. It would help those of us that have
ordered after the first day to see how the orders are progressing.

If anyone has received a KPA1500 ordered after day one, can you let me know
please? I ordered mine on 10/16 (paid in full but still in the same queue). I’m
coming to an unfortunate realization that I will most likely see this in time
for Winter contest season :)

Re: [Elecraft] Security cable attachment for radios

2018-02-06 Thread Thomas Schaefer
I use Tryten T3 cables. The T3 has a very strong glue to connect a hardened
cable pass-through to a device without its own security slot.

These cables and holders are made for server racks that need to he held more
securely than a cable lock. Note the kit also contains some wedges to fit into
a cable slot too to connect to the monitor. Of course, this is not to keep it
safe from someone that has their tools and a good amount of time from getting
the item. It does discourage quick grabs and other crimes of opportunity.

Here is a link:
https://www.tryten.com/cable-locks/universal-computer-lock-kit-standard-t3.html

The small black block can be glued to a radio with the supplied glue. As I
said, some one could take their tools and disassemble the radio but not in the
few minutes you left it unattended I suspect.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Manual?

2017-11-29 Thread Thomas Schaefer
At the risk of being impertinent and asking a question about Elecraft gear,

I also hope we hear a report from anyone that receives a unit so we know they

Thank you for posting that. I am at fault…

The guidelines state: 5a. Please -do not- post publicly or privately asking
people to stop a particular thread, no matter how long, off topic or repetitive
it gets. Email me instead ;-) . I will step in when I feel it is necessary to
end a thread. (eric(at)elecraft.com)

I took the opportunity to inject some Internet etiquette and that is clearly
against the wishes of the list owner as I did exactly what he asked not to do.

As I disagree with that, it’s best for me to extricate myself and use the Yahoo

In fact most email applications have that feature.

The solution I propose is that each subject line that is a true

 Here are some examples:

 K3, K3S, P3, KPA500, KAT500, K2, KRC2, KX3 or whatever.

If those of you who only want to talk about Elecraft products would do
that it would be easy to filter out off topic subjects, even if you
 did it by hand.

The trouble with adding On-Topic is that it doesn't specify which
product. For instance: I'm not interested in K2 or KX3 topics,
because I don't own either of them and I am not considering buying one
of the two (at this time), but I AM interested in the products I own

What say those of you who are tired of off topic posts?

old synth and I cannot imagine a case where someone would need one of these. If
you had a failure now and needed to replace it, you would surely just replace
it with the new one. Or at least save your pennies. But how many times in the
history of the K3 could this board have failed—short of storm damage.

I look at the old synth on the shelf mocking me with its bright shiny aluminum
shell and the only thing that keeps me from tossing it the trash is guilt so I
wait until the next county mobile electronics collection when I get rid of my
other old electronics, batteries, CFL bulbs, paint, etc.

But, if someone wants it, tell me a really great thing you will do with it,
promise to send me a picture of the completed project and I’ll even pay the US
postage (note that if you just want the nice piece of aluminum, that doesn’t
qualify).

were doubly wrong since the EU bands the use of the pitchfork symbol for any

If they are going to make their own standards then, they should not be in

differential amplifier as an op amp. Granted the same ICs can be used for

inconsistences abound like using both square and triangles to represent a

Re: [Elecraft] KSYN3A + KSYN3

2015-06-22 Thread Thomas Schaefer
I just went thought this process and the new KRX3 comes with the new synth. I
had to pick up a new synth to replace the old one in the main receiver as they
have to match.

It only took 12 hours to do it all including redoing the filters in the
receiver because I did not read the manual close enough and my
mis-understanding of the implication of “optional steps” regarding the
connection to the KAT3 tuner for the KRX3.

Hence, I am the cautionary tale about not reading the manual :)

But, I will say that doing this work makes me sorry I did not buy the kits for
both K3s--that would be the plural of K3 versus a K3S :). It was GREAT FUN to
install the sub receiver. I really enjoyed the fact that when someone was
explaining routing the TMP cables, and installing the new pre-amp, I could see
the exact parts and how they fit together. It made something abstract quite
real and I like that.

Re: [Elecraft] Question about KRX3 install

2015-06-14 Thread Thomas Schaefer
Thanks.

Well, I figured it out in that based on reading Fred’s book and the email from
Fred, I installed the cable from the ATU to the KRX3.

The issue is that the installation makes it seem like BOTH these items are
optional (if you only want to run the sub RX off the main antenna and NOT do
diversity reception of any sort).

I say that because the manual for the KRX3 install states if you do not want to
di wither of the optional antenna steps to skip ahead. That is fine and I have
no issue with that.

The challenge is the commands in the radio to enable the KRX3 are not intuitive
to me. Maybe it is just me as I tend to be quite literal. I submit there should
be config options. One is KRX3A with two options for ON or OFF and the other
config item should be Sub RX AUX Ant with choices of NA, KAT3 or BNC. Short of
two separate items, if the KRX3 config option was OFF, ON-MAIN, RX-KAT, RX-BNC
that would be OK too. That would make it more self-explanatory.

But, all is well, the SubRx and new synths are working, the new DVR is working
and the service monitor says it all checks out.

Thanks to all that helped.

Essentially I have either not installed or BNC as choice for KRX3.

That suits my use fine. I mainly use the KRX3 to receive the 28-MHz IF of my
dual-receiver 144-28 transverter. Other use might be a separate low-noise Rx
antenna on 600m (someday). I do little HF operating and single antenna
connection is fine (external coax switch used for antenna selection).

I have an old Drake MN-2000 2kW rated manual tuner which handles my HF uses
(do not chase HF-DX or HF-contest).

[Elecraft] Question about KRX3 install

2015-06-13 Thread Thomas Schaefer
Hello,

I have a question about the sub receiver I installed this weekend.

The procedure for the aux antenna states you have two options for an AUX
antenna, either put the BNC in the back of the radio OR connect though the KAT3
so the non used antenna port is the AUX.

From reading the book, I presumed this is an optional step. In other words, I
can do the BNC jack, connect the KRX3 to the KAT3 or NEITHER.

I choose neither. I hope I got that right.

My question is that when I tell the radio that I am using the KRX3, I select
from Not Installed, AUX-BNC or AUX-KAT (paraphrasing). Well, since I did not do
either of what I consider optional steps, neither one of those makes sense to
select. I selected the KAT option but if the steps are really optional, I would
thing the CONFIG options should be ON-NoAUX, AUX-BNC or AUX-KAT.

Can someone clarify if the AUX steps are indeed optional and if so, which KRX3
option should I select in CONFIG.

Thanks,

Tom NY4I

Re: [Elecraft] Question about KRX3 install

2015-06-13 Thread Thomas Schaefer
Thanks Fred.

So If I follow you, I have to pick one of those two options?

I ask as in the installation manual, it states if you do NOT want an AUX input
to the KRX3, you can skip the steps. As presented, I did indeed skip those
steps but when I arrived at the menu, I thought to myself, “Well, I selected
neither option, so which one do I choose”. It sounds like maybe I wanted BNC as
I really just want to let the subRX share the main antenna.

Thanks,

 Hi Tom,
Here is how I have it figured out:

When you install your Sub receiver you must chose an antenna configuration
and then physically connect a TMP cable inside the K3 from the Sub receiver's
J92 antenna input to one of two places. First, you can connect the receiver
to the K3's ATU, which allows the Sub receiver to either share the same
antenna the Main receiver is using (ANT1, ANT 2, or RX ANT IN if a KXV3A is
installed). You may also choose to have the Sub receiver use whichever
antenna the Main receiver is NOT using (ANT 2 if Main is using ANT1, or vice
versa). You must set CONFIG:KRX3 Ant=Atu for this option. This may be your
best choice for all around operating with a variety of antennas. Section
5.10.3 shows antenna selections when you make this choice.

The second choice is to connect the receiver to a separate auxiliary RF BNC
antenna connector. In this case, the Sub receiver can share an antenna with
the Main or it can use a different antenna connected to the AUX RF BNC. Set
CONFIG:KRX3 Ant=bnc if you choose this option. This may be your best choice
for diversity receiver operation with specialized receive antennas. Section
5.10.4 gives diagrams showing antenna choices for this configuration.
Note: You cannot transmit on the AUX RF BNC.

I think some of the confusion comes from what the K3 displays when you switch
the Sub's antenna. When sharing the main antenna, it shows MAIN; when
switched to the other choice, it shows AUX but that doesn't necessarily mean
the AUX BNC. In this case it depends how you have your Sub receiver
 connected -- Ant=Atu or Ant=bnc.

Re: [Elecraft] Question about KRX3 install

2015-06-13 Thread Thomas Schaefer
I don't mean to be obtuse, but I don’t follow.

The way the book is written is it sounds like I can choose an option. There was
a downside described ion the manual to having the AUX though non-used antenna
port. I also do not need to use a separate antenna. All I ever want to do is
have the Sub RX on the main antenna. I use the sub rx strictly to hear the
other side of a pile up.

I am going to check out my other K3 that I received that had the sub RX in it.
Let me see what it did.

For all practical purposes, yes. Which you pick depends on how many antennas
you have and how you plan to use the 2nd RX. If you want to do diversity RX,
you probably want the AUX connector -- that way, you can feed whatever
antenna you want into it without tying up the ANT2 connector.
