Re: [Elecraft] [K2] XV50 vs FT817?

2009-09-10 Thread Tim O'Rourke
I would strongly disagree on several points!
I have run 6 meter QRP for years and they do not call it the magic band for
nothing.
I have 50+ countries on 6 meter QRP at last count.
I run QRP from QTH as well as mountain tops and when conditions are right you
do not need more than a few watts for SSB or CW and yes most VHF contest have
CW activity although not as much as I would like.
As for the virtues of KXV verses the 817 I use both but the 817 is my mtn top
rig even with the higher current drain I like one rig for all bands, I use a
220 5 watt xverter fron a QST article with the 817 also. The KXV's are more
sensitive and have a little more output and I use them at QTH. I like the ease
of switching bands and the offsets for keeping frequency easy to see.
Personaly I just do not like taking my K2 and transverters mountain topping.

Peter,

There are no VHF CW contests, per se. There is usually some 50 MHz CW activity
in the June ARRL VHF QSO party and the July CQ WW VHF contest, but this is
probably about 10% or less of the activity level on SSB. DX chasing, on the
other hand, is typically more fruitful on CW. But chasing 6 meter DX with QRP
is
an exercise in frustration. DX signal levels are simply too weak for QRP.

For 6m SSB, you will want at least 100W output into a decent directional
antenna
to be competitive in the Low Power category of ARRL VHF (up to 200W). There are
no power categories in the CQ WW, so you're competing directly against the KWs
in this one.

Bottom line -- Outside of extremely strong 50 MHz sporadic-E openings, VHF
and
QRP don't really go together that well, though some guys do seem to enjoy the
challenge. For me, life is too short for 6m QRP. :-) I enjoy making QSOs too
much, I guess.

Good luck,
Bill W5WVO

An XV50 + KIO2, adding on to a QRP K2, is getting within shouting
distance of the cost of an FT817. Could someone comment on the
relative merits, for use as a first multimode VHF rig? My guess is
that the XV50 is better, but does less. In addition to just exploring
on CW and SSB, I'd want to participate in some VHF CW contests.

[Elecraft] Re: K2 (ssb)

2008-02-08 Thread Tim O'Rourke
I have had opposite experience. I use mine (Serial 8XX) on both ssb and cw. I
have had excellent audio reports and busted lots of pileups with 5-10 watts ssb
due to excellent audio quality. I do have a small preamp on the back of the mic
connector and I use all Heil mics.
I believe a K2 properly set up has no compromises on SSB.

Hello,

I have a K1, which I like. I was thinking about getting a K2 while waiting
for my K3 (ordered 27 Dec). I went to the E-ham web page and read some of
the reviews. There are a lot of people who really do not think too much of
the K2. One or two might be some crack pot, but there are a whole bunch of
not happy users. All of the magazine reviews seem to love it.

Comments on why the ratings have so many unhappy K2 users? The worst are the
users using the K2/100 and most complaints seem to be it's ability on SSB. I
guess it was originally designed for a CW rig, so don't expect good
performance on SSB?. The reports on the K1 and K3 are glowing.

Bob others,

I think the easiest way to get 48 VDC phantom power for a real mic is
to put a small mixing board or mic preamp between the mic and rig. I
have a (yuck, spit) Behringer board that cost me $100 about 10 yrs ago
that provides phantom power on 4 channels plus some EQ and, of course,
mixing capabilities. Or I can use my Mackie board to do the same.
That's how I run good mic into my rig. If you don't want a mixer, you
can get several different mic preamps that will provide the phantom
voltage the mic needs.

Would it be possible for the K3 to provide 48volt Phantom power for
 profesional condensor microphones?
 Thanks!

[Elecraft] RE:OT-NASA soldering

2006-10-27 Thread Tim O'Rourke
I was not NASA certified but worked with techs that were. They explained that
minimum solder, ie concave verses convex solder blob, was due to not inspection
of solder pad. If the solder was piled on the inspectors would reject it
because they had a harder time determining cold solder pads, minimal solder
allowed proper inspection of the pad.
Tim W4YN

Judging from a direct response, it seems that my statement about using minimum
solder to save lift-off weight during the lunar lander program generated
skepticism...At that time NASA estimated that they saved 450 pounds on the
entire Saturn 5 launch vehicle by limiting the amount of solder used for a
one-shot launch...NASA did not use Mil-Spec, they had their own spec...

Jerry, wa2dkg

Anything that is built for NASA and will fly will most likely have to be
conformal coated...Leaving excess lead length might cause the ends to
protrude out of the conformal coating, defeating the purpose of the
coating...I was not aware of any min-max lead length protrusion in my
dealings with NASAWe used minimum solder to save lift-off weight and we
always trimmed flush...

What amplifier is recommended for use with a Heil headset with the #5
element? I seem to be missing this in the discussions currently ongoing.

Thanks and 73,

Good Day,

I have had an HL-50B for a while that I use on some of my QRP rigs and
FT-817 when I need a bit of extra punch. It has provided faithful service
until recently. Low to no power out on all bands. I returned it to Japan to
Tokyo Hy-Power after sending and email. Nobuki-san sent a quick reply saying
that the HL-50B has been a reliable unit and that he was surprised that I
had difficulty. I just got an email from him saying that unit has been
repaired and returned at no cost to me except the shipping that it cost to
get it to them. This goes way above and beyond the call of service. It is a
standard by which all should strive to achieve. No questions on when I
bought it or what I was doing when it failed. They just fixed it on good
faith. Just thought I would let others know of the good service that I got
from them. I will be buying more products from them when the occasion
presents itself again.

[Elecraft] lithium AA's

2005-03-02 Thread Tim O'Rourke
There are 3 volt lithium rechargeable AA's out there, u just use less cells.
There is a lot of concern about safety reguarding lithium cells but every cell
phone use on now a days. I have never seen an article abt a cell phone
cataching on fire but I guess it probably happens. I have been using
rechargable lithium cell in R/C air planes for several years now and I have
several 4500ma flat cell packs I use with qrp gear. If you use a charger
designed for the cells there should be no issues. Most of the accidents I have
read about were caused by user not using correct charger. A 4500 ma 11 volt
pack weighs a significant amount less that a 8 or 10 cell AA pack. The R/C
battery vendors are claiming a discharge rate up to 20C but with our gear it is
not necessary. Check out any R/C airplane mag and you will find several adds
for these cells. The AA rechargable cells are hard to find and I do not
remember where I found them but I will try and find the invoice if others are
interested. Tim ORourtke W4YN

You hit it on the button (sic) do not know how it got changed but that worked.
Now I do not need another rig in shack on to hear side tone.
Tnx a bunch.
Tim W4YN

From: Ron D'Eau Claire [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tim, you've probably been bit by the by the sidetone source demon.

Go into the menu, choose Sidetone Level STL.

Press MENU to enable the sidetone level adjustment, the tap DISPLAY.

That changes where the K2 looks for the sidetone from the controller, which
changed a few firmware revs back so it has to be selectable. But if you
accidentally tap DISPLAY while leaving the level menu, you disable the
sidetone in the process! That's the sidetone source demon laughing if you
listen very carefully when you should be hearing the tone... But aren't.

Hope that did it!

Re: [Elecraft] Internal AAA batteries for KX1?

2004-11-17 Thread Tim O'Rourke
FWIW
I use Lithium Ion batteries in RC planes and I also use them with the KX1, K1
and other rigs. However I do not use them in the rig, I have seen too many
battery failures over the years (30) to trust charging in the rig. I do have
several 3 cell (11.5) volt flat cell packs I use as external source. I like
this as I can change packs on the fly and charge them away from rig. As an
example a 3 cell flat pack with a rating of 3500 mah is about the size of an 8
cell AA flat pack but thinner and about 1/3 of the weight. They do require a
charger that is made specifically for Lithium Ion packs. I carry 2 of these in
back pack and get many hours of op time before needing recharged.
Tim W4YN

From: Eric Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have a rechargeable lithium CR-V3 battery for my digital camera-it is 3V
nominal, and the same size as 2 AAs smushed together side-by-side. The 3+3
cell arrangement in the KX1 precludes using these, but I wonder if someone
is going to come out with a rechargeable lithium AA-or do they already
exist?

Eric

N0HHS

I saw a posting yesterday on QRP-L where someone saw AAA Lithium batteries
for sale so I went to the Energizer.com site and sure enough it looks like
Eveready is now manufacturing a 1250 mah AAA Lithium cell.

This got me to thinking about how great it would be if Elecraft offered
an alternative bottom cover for the KX1 that had 2 X 4 AAA holders giving
12+ V instead of 10V with the 2 X 3 AAs.
