[Elecraft] KX-3 Field and Sea day

2022-06-27 Thread Timothy Gordish via Elecraft
Field day can be less of a social event and more of an adventure if you choose.
Having had a week that was too social I decided to go it alone for the
afternoon in a seaside location. I loaded up my KX-3 into a dry bag and tossed
it in my 11.5 foot Shellback wooden dinghy. From the boat ramp at Barn Island
CT, I began to row across bay and state lines to Point Napatree Rhode Island,
but the wind picked up a bit so I set the sail for the remainder of the 2.5
crossing.

Landing on the beach I strung up my wire using a fishing pole and mast, turned
the rig power down to 2.5 watts, and discovered that I forgot a headset. The
bands on 40 and 20 were QRN free but the QRM from the waves hitting the beach
sometimes made copy challenging. I ran for about 4 hours of the event and the
internal batteries did quite well. Lithium batteries are the best.

I made 20 contacts using only cw. One station was drown out by the waves and I
won’t be able to count it since I got his exchange info garbled. W1TM 1B RI
was a heart warming success in my log. The sail back to the boat as the sun
headed to the horizon was smooth. My favorite way to play radio!

[Elecraft] Blinking in KX-3

2021-12-19 Thread Timothy Gordish via Elecraft
I have owned my KX-3 for many years and just noticed a tiny LED blinking
inside. It is noticeable through the key connector on the bottom of the radio.
 What is this?

I have all the upgrades except the two meter.

[Elecraft] KX3 and Winmor

2016-01-10 Thread Timothy Gordish
I am trying to use Winmor for Winlink2000 on my KX-3 and having difficulty. I
am unable to connect to stations although it transmits and receives but gives
the error "Timeout in T>R latency measure"

I set the interface to the 38400 bps and am using Windows 10. Anyone know a
fix for this?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW decoder and CQ CW contest

2014-11-30 Thread Timothy Gordish
This also was my first contest with my new KX-3. I didn't use the decoder
because I use mostly CW in my every day ops. The interface with my new logging
program with its access to DX spots gave me the most DXCC contacts ever! I
worked the world in couple of hour with only 5 watts.

 Hi
Just thought I'd drop a note about the Elecraft CW decoder. I've been on the
air for a number of hours hunting new DXCC's with the K3's built in CW
decoder. This was my first time using CW, I only know the letters CQ 5NN TU
and that's it! ( OK E also) Never been on CW before so all DXCC's were 'new'.
Armed with that and a spotting program I racked up 50 new dxccs from around
the world. This was a new experience and introduced me to CW. Now I want to
learn it so the next time the contest comes around I'll enjoy it that much
 more. Was a blast.

[Elecraft] Now which mic can I use.

2014-10-26 Thread Timothy Gordish
I have several microphones on hand and wondering if any will work with my soon
to be order KX3.

My preference is a Heil Pro-Set Plus which has two crystal elements and a phase
reverse switch. By far the most comfortable headset I have ever use. Can I
use these with an appropriate adapter?

Then I have a Yaesu HT speaker mic with the correct 4 conductor connector used
with a VX-5.

Then I have a headset with the same connector which I used with a HP netbook.
Cheep but sufficient.

Will any of these work, or should I just order the Elecraft hand mike?

Re: [Elecraft] Now which mic can I use.

2014-10-26 Thread Timothy Gordish
Hmmm….

For my operating needs I think I will just get the mike from Elecraft. I would
interested in knowing if anyone else uses the Heil headset with any luck.

I am looking forward to using my Bencher Hexkey to send PSK. That sounds like
a real hoot.

 HI Tim:

I'm sure you could get at least one of those mics to work, with appropriate
connector. I didn't realize that Heil had a crystal element in one of their
units... I thought they were dynamic. In any event, you likely can treat it
as dynamic (no DC bias needed). The Yaesu mic may not have the proper
pin-out, but it would work if re-wired. And the netbook headset might work,
too, but you would have to use the XMIT button on the front panel or VOX...
(or wire up a PTT gizmo).

And, if all else fails, work a little CW, RTTY, or PSK31 with the KX3 while
you wait for a Elecraft mic to arrive. :)

FWIW, I ordered the mic with my KX3... and added other items (paddle, filter,
ATU) afterward. BTW... dollar for dollar, the ATU is a great option to
have... it's a superb tuner. If I had to pick just one option to have, the
 ATU would be it.

[Elecraft] MARS bands?

2014-10-24 Thread Timothy Gordish
I am contemplating purchase of a new KX-3 but I must know that it can be used
on MARS bands. I sent an e-mail inquiry to elecraft but no response yet. I
also googled of course, but no definite answer there. Couldn’t find anything
in the archives here either.

At this point it appears that either it isn’t possible, or it is top secret
information.

[Elecraft] MARS bands

2014-10-24 Thread Timothy Gordish
Thanks for the replies. My question is answered. I really needed to know
because I will be selling a couple of much loved rigs to raise the cash for the
KX-3.

[Elecraft] Terrible Tragedy

2005-06-13 Thread Timothy Gordish
Yesterday, my shack went up in smoke. Included in the rigs that became
charred and melted piles of scrap was K1 #00569. May it RIP. (moment
of silence)

Anyways, everything was insured for replacement, but I given the
opportunity to design a station from the ground up I am considering my
options. High on the list of option is purchasing a K2 as the main
rig, and a KX1 for portable us. One of the important features on my
new station is its flexibility on all the old and new digital modes. I
am interested in knowing if a rig to soundcard interface is necessary
for the K2. What is the most convenient method of using the rig on CW,
SSB, and soundcard digital without having to constantly connect and
reconnect cables.

My computer will be a Mac (like the one that melted) and I will be
using MacLoggerDX, and Multimode OSX.
