[Elecraft] A helpful review...

2016-05-01 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
This link may be of interest to many who have recently been debating a new
SDR...it was recently made available to another group I belong to. I'm keeping
my K3 but looking forward to purchasing one of these puppies too. I'm sold and
the price point is perfect.

[Elecraft] 75m

2016-02-14 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
"I'm dismayed by much of what I hear on 75. I think one of the best behaved
bands is 17." Bob

Many of the same colorful characters on 75m make regular appearances on 40m &
20m as well. Fact is, IMO of course, I hear the "stuff" on every band & the
local repeaters. The hobby just isn't what it use to be anymore mostly because
the operators today aren't the operators of yesteryear. Anyone wanna buy an
exquisite station with very low hours that's rarely in use these days I've
lost all interest in the hobby. View it on my QRZ'd page & email me if
interested.

[Elecraft] Jim K9YC & Amsterdam

2015-12-23 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
Ah Amsterdam...been there on three occasions spending at least 10 days each
trip...hm...attending a conference there wasn't on our agenda though. Beautiful
city (the old part of the city) & a wonderful playground for adults :),
wonderful museums and oh those delicious coffee shops. The Dutch are the
tallest Caucasians I've ever seen in my life! Now we just go to Colorado for
that coffee shop experience.

[Elecraft] Rick & antennas...

2015-12-09 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
"The Buckmaster never wins compared to inverted vees though, but it DOES tune
up on multiple bands. It and the Elecraft tuner get along fine, so it serves
its purpose (which is NOT high performance)."

Whaaa? The Buckmaster is recommended to be installed as an
inverted V. That's sweet that the E Tuner gets along with it but I have the
3,000w version and run full legal limit on all bands (where allowed) that it
operates on without the need to use my tuner. Not high performance eh? Funny
stuff. I suggest anyone considering this fine antenna consult the eHam reviews
of it by people who actually own the antenna & have experience with it.
Comparing a beam antenna to a wire is sort of ridiculous IMO for what should be
more than obvious reasons. Lotsa haters out there as usual.

[Elecraft] Craig KD0TXL...best antenna

2015-12-07 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
7-band, no tuner required, Buckmaster OCF dipole...except no substitutes. Built
like a tank's tank. Mine has been up for years thru high winds (100mph+), ice
storms as well as asteroid & comet impacts. Very low to flat SWR on all bands
that it's designed to operate on. Great signal reports worldwide. Mine is
installed as an inverted V. Get one. Thank me later. You're welcome in advance.

[Elecraft] Beware...

2015-10-19 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
Some of you may belong to several groups that correspond to the different
radios you may own, I do. I own an Icom 756 Pro 3 and belong to that group as
well. Recently I've noticed an individual posting a 7800 for sale on both the E
Reflector as well as this group's site. What I find interesting is that he's
also posting it on the Yahoo 756 Pro 3 group's site as well only with a
completely different reason for selling it.

"Reason for selling? I upgraded to an IC-7850."

Hm His reason for selling given to this group & the Yahoo group was because
he "upgraded" to the K3 & now owns the entire K line. Smell fishy??? Does to
me.

Buyer beware, "A fool and his money are soon parted."...great advice given to
me as a teen from my best friends dad.

equipment. This radio has maybe 10 hours of use max on it. It is offered with
the following options for $2,300 plus freight:

K3/100-F
2.8kHz, 8-pole filter
2.1kHz, 8-pole filter
1.8kHz, 8-pole filter
400Hz, 8-pole filter
6kHz, 8-pole filter
K3 TCXO
KXV3, Transverter Interface
MH2, Hand mike (never used)

Fred Cady 298 page manual 2nd edition.

This radio ships in the original factory box with all the original paperwork
including the manual provided by Elecraft. Reason for sale...lack of interest
in the hobby these days. I'm good via PayPal & will provide any additional info
or high resolution pics if needed. The radio can be seen on my QRZ'd page as
well. If interested, contact me at:

[Elecraft] Another Elecraft price increase...

2015-09-24 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
"We have hit the point where we will be increasing prices slightly on a number
of our products by about the middle of October."

Hm...again eh? Seems like everything is going up except wages for the American
worker. Seems they stopped going up about inauguration 1980 & that gap just
started getting bigger & bigger. I hope I live long enough to see Americans
"just say no" about this absurd situation. I guess I haven't got there yet
since we just bought a new 2016 Honda for the wife a few weeks ago but I'm
getting there. I think I got there with ham radio awhile ago. Someone remarked
about college tuition, new cars & the grocery store and instructed us to quit
whining. Hilarious advice really. Yes America, just take it and keep on taking
it. We plan to make more cuts & lower your wages even more, certainly not raise
them and the CEO's...They only make 300 times or more what the worker bee
does...they need a raise and a tax cut! So buck up! Quit whining! Buy it or
don't! We don't care!

I say don't.

[Elecraft] K3 to Pro III, my thoughts to Jeff, wb0m

2015-09-11 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft

I have both radios..bought both new...I'd advise you to keep your Pro III & add
a K3 or K3s but if that's not an option then I would say keep your Pro III &
wait a bit longer for the inevitable "next incarnation" of the K3...possibly a
K4. I think you will find that you will miss your Pro III greatly if you let it
go and you might not be convinced that you made a good decision after you get
your new K3 in your hands. When/if you do get it in your hands, your first
thought will be why is this K3 so much lighter than my Pro III???Yeah, it's a
bit smaller (mine sets on top of my Pro III) but your Icom weighs in at over 20
pounds and your K3 might only weigh 7 or 8 pounds...both use an external PS so
that's not the reason??? To many peeps that's awesome while to others it
suggests something (or a lot) might be missing. I'll tell you right now that
the Pro III is FAR easier to use than the K3 and you will need to purchase Fred
Cady's (KE7X) manual to really learn the K3...IMO. You will also likely sense a
certain "cheapness" to the K3 as compared to your old Icom. Depending on what
you do with your radio, you may not notice any performance advantage at
all...again...depends on what you do with it. I like both radios & don't want
to start an argument about this radio vs that radio yet again...there have been
zillions of such debates already, you can spend hours reading them online. If
your Pro III is as flawless as mine (& one of the last ones produced) and not
used that often (I have 3 radios which reduces wear & tear on any single
radio), I would think very long & hard before parting with it. Hopefully you've
sat down in front of a K3 and operated it so that your not surprised when you
open the box, if you haven't done that...you need to do so. I know some that
bought the radio and sold it soon after buying it because it wasn't what they
expected. For those that tell you that "you won't regret it", maybe they really
do regret parting with their Pro III but just want some company in the dunces
corner! I say that you may very definitely regret it! Mine is staying right
where it is.

[Elecraft] K3 vs K3s..."to be or not to be an "s"

2015-09-11 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
N1LQ-Dave...this is starting to remind me of the Apple iPhone drama...about
every 6 months a new iPhone comes out that's "better" than the previous one.
Sorta makes you wonder why they just didn't make the damn thing that way in the
first place, I think we all know why. I've owned all the iPhones from the very
first one up to the recently new 6 Plus w/128gig hard drive & now the 6s Plus
is out! Honestly!!!??? I've had gripes about all of them, use to be size (to
small), then camera resolution, then software bugs & the OS, etcetera etcetera
etcetera. Getting off topic...back to the radio...I have 3 radios inline
including a mid serial number 3,000 something K3. I paid tooo damn much for
all of them and am quite sure I can survive without the latest & greatest
version of the K3...the "s" line...ya just know that some day real soon there
will be the next latest & greatest K4 or some nonsense out making the new K3s
old news. I can think of about a hundred other things I'd rather do with the
than burn it on another ham radio but then again, ham radio isn't my life
or my passion, it's just a hobby. In the end it's a personal decision you have
to make based on many factors. Do you really need this new version or just want
it? It sounds like you have a great radio now...take a trip to the South
Pacific with the wife instead is my advice (at least one of you could go for
the same money maybe :), avoid getting that feeling of wondering why you blew
perfectly good money on something you really didn't need in the first place. I
find that it's the "wanting" that's the real drug, after you get the new
"thing", it's newness wears off pretty quick & then it's just the same old same
old again. Skip this version and wait for the next one is probably good advice
too, maybe the best advice, you know that it's already being thought about & it
is after all...inevitable. I'm staying pat until many of the physical features
of the radio are addressed...& they will be...eventually, the performance
upgrades will be in that future radio too. Don't get on the merry-go-round as I
did with all the different models of the iPhone, it's simply a waste of
perfectly good money better spent elsewhere or even invested and or saved. Just
my two cents!

[Elecraft] CW

2014-12-02 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
For those who have a smart phone & are trying to learn CW, I can recommend,
"Ham Morse". I have it on my iPhone & you can listen to it when your driving or
wherever you are and have some time to study. It's available at the App Store
for iPhones & likely somewhere similar for other phones. My two cents.

[Elecraft] Solution

2014-09-11 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft
"I prefer an inverted
V over a vertical but in 5H3 deep in the bush filming wildlife on a TV
contract I didn't always have trees at hand!"

Hm...where has creativity gone to? Use to giraffes as I did!

:)

The Drake equation is:
N = R(200 billion) x Fp x Ne x Fl x Fi x Fc x L
where:

N = the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which radio-communication
might be possible (i.e. which are on our current past light cone);
and

R* = the average rate of star formation in our galaxy
fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets
ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star
that has planets
fl = the fraction of planets that could support life that actually develop life
at some point
fi = the fraction of planets with life that actually go on to develop
intelligent life (civilizations)
fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases
detectable signs of their existence into space
L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals
into space before going extinct.

[Elecraft] David Cole & "stuff"

2014-04-19 Thread Tom Fitzgerald via Elecraft

1. When in transmit using SSB, I am getting some sort of audio feedback
only when I have the monitor level turned up. The louder I turn up
Monitor, the more feedback I get.

2. I have somehow turned off the NR for SSB mode only... When I press
the 8 key, (NR), I get N/A if in SSB mode. If in CW, it works fine...

1) If you're using the monitor function without headphones to monitor
with...that's your problem. In other words, if you're monitoring via a speaker
instead of headphones...this is creating the feedback loop which will only get
worse as you "turn it up". Put your headphones on to monitor. You're ProIII
(assuming you still have it) was no different.
2) Not a clue...I'm sitting in a bar with my lovely & not in front of the radio
so if indeed "8" is the NR function...press it & hold it to access the "setting
function"...choose what is most effective...tap it to turn it on & off. Not a
clue as to why N/A is displaying...not a clue...unless of course; as you
suggest, you somehow turned it off in the menu somewhere. Probably best not to
change to much in the menu until you get more familiar with the radio...Fred's
book is a must IMO.
