Jerry,
I was at our local Big Lots and while looking around I noted they had a new
series of headphones on displayunable to pass up a perceived bargain, I
bought two pairs..one
for my QRP station and one for my main stationthey are simply amazing.
They are COBY CV-320 Digital Stereo Headphones with dual volume
controls...and oh yes, they cost $5.99 each.

Hi Kevin,

I use the "cheapie" portable player type earphones.
These insert in your ear with a cross band over the
top of your head (bud types are similiar, but find
they pull out too easily). These phones are generally
16Ohms and only require about 50mW to drive them. I
definitely suggest you look for low drive power, as it
will give you more control with the volume pot. They
generally run $9.95. The only thing I don't like about
them is the short cords, usually only a meter long.

Why not regular headphones? I find for digging weak
signals out in a contest or on the low bands (on CW)
these do the best job of the half dozen or so types
I've tried.

Now, does anyone know of any wireless headphones of
the same style that are available on the market? ;o)

Happy holidays!

Just got off the phone with Kathy who was speaking for Dan Henderson, N1ND
(Head of ARRL contest division) who is on vacation. I asked her what was
the

thinking of the organizers of SKN pertaining to what kind of keys are
acceptable for use during SKN? Her answer was very definite in as much as
"Any mechanical means of producing a CW signal is acceptable". The bug is
every much a part of radio history as the "straight key" and is perfectly
acceptable for use during SKN.

You can quote the statement shown on the ARRL site as much as you wish but
this is not a "Set of Rules" but more a philosophy of what the night is
all

about. The celebration of the "Good old days". Vintage equipment is being
used more and more on that evening along with the mechanical keys used to
generate cw signals from that era. All is encouraged and acceptable. The
ONLY thing that is not acceptable is the electronic generation of the cw
signal. eg: electronic keyers of any type, keyboards, etc.

I have tried to represent the thinking of the officials organizing this
event in as simple and straightforward method as possible. I am sure
someone

will read something into this that isn't there to promote their thinking
that because the name of the event is Straight Key Night that it is the

Gee, I hope this settles this thread.

Re: [Elecraft] Is CW a Language? OT

2006-01-14 Thread Tony Martin W4FOA

Sandy,
I agree with much of what you have said but I would ask "whom shall we
blame"?
Unfortunately, I think we, you and I, are to blame for the lack of skills
and know how

of many of the newcomers.

I don't know how long you have been in ham radio, but it wasn't too many
years

ago when most of us were "in" ham radio because of an "elmer". Someone that
introduced us to this wonderful hobby and nudged us along the way,
encouraged us
when we wanted to give up, and then tutored us as we got on the air. Even
corrected

us when we were not operating according to the standards of the day.

Today it is too easy to buy a book off the shelf, spend a day studying it,
spend 20 minutes
taking an exam and wait 24 hours to receive your own callsign. The radio
clubs are
ever so eager to have new members that many really don't spend the time to
insure that
the new member will ever be more than a "dues paying member" and never
realize there

is more to ham radio than 2 meters.

If there is a solution to the problem of poor operating habits by our
newcomers, it will
be for each of us to take them by the hand and teach them the correct
procedures. BUT,
please don't think for one minute that ALL of the bad operators are
newcomers.not

by any stretch of the imagination!

My two cents worth..

Operating "protocol" today is absolutely atrocious at times!
A lot of the newer hams know nothing about really proper procedure and
many are very short on manners!
Biggest violation of all is when someone calls CQ, another station just
answers "W1ABC W1ABC K". Who is he calling? I usually respond by
sending: "QRZ? QRZ? DE W5TVW K".

Often the other station will simply send
"W1ABC W1ABC K" If the band is crowded, which it often is, this had NOT
told me he is calling me! We have not yet established communication so
the "DE W1ABC" or "W1ABC" IS NOT proper or polite procedure.

Whether a station uses "OP", "NAME", "HANDLE" (or whatever) that is his
preference, whatever turns his crank.

Add to this the "Novice accent" heard STILL today "NNQ NNQ NNQ NNQ NNQ
DE W1ABC W1ABC.." repeated several times. Then a 5 second
pause for an answer, followed by the same long CQ call again! One chap on
40
a few nights ago repeated this for maybe 5-6 times. I couldn't stand it
any longer

and fired up the 1/2 Kw and called him. He acted as if I was never there.
Either deaf or has his receiver somewhere besides his frequency.

Are ham license classes teaching proper procedures anymore? I KNOW the
FCC doesn't give a damn. Perhaps a cell phone ringing, or someone passing
gas loudly, or talking loudly in an office or church or theatre isn't
considered

RUDE anymore, so why try to have any manners in the ham bands?

Sorry for the diatribe, but seems like too many of the newbies are not
paying attention or don't care. More attention needs to be payed to
the ARRL operating manual or have they rewritten it to reflect the
times?

This 2 cents worth on "Rotten Radio" from this "Old Man".

Re: [Elecraft] WA3WSJ: DX & Pileups

2006-02-07 Thread Tony Martin W4FOA

Ed,

Good thoughts and well stated.

One critically important thought I believe you might have overlooked.

That is simply this: The DX Station Is In Control of the pileup (or should
be).

If he or she says "QRZ W7Y??" and comes back to KP4XYZ, he has just
created a problem. The new breed of good DX operators stick by their
directions.
They also send their call frequently (preferably after each QSO) and every
so often
send their name, qth and qsl info and also tell if they are QSX'ing up or
down.
Following these ideas elminates the need for the ever present LID to get on
the DX frequency
and ask "Call?" "QSL info?" etc. Of course the Lids are like the
"Force"...they will

always be with us.

DXing from "the other side" is great fun.

72/73 and hope to "beat" you in the DX pileups

Subject: [Elecraft] WA3WSJ: DX & Pileups

Hello all,

I guess I'll give my two cents worth concerning DX and pileups.
I've operated as WA3WSJ/KP4, WA3WSJ/C6A, V26ED and VP5ED. I used the
WA3WSJ/C6A call around twelve times. Almost all of these Dxpeditions
were for CW contests such as CQWWCW. When I operated as VP5ED, I had
over 1200 QS in 48 hours using my K2 at 5w (s/n 321). Here is what a DX
operator is listening for: Any SEMI-CLEAR SPOT!

When you call cq as a needed dx station, the fun starts after you are
called out on a few reflectors. All the Dx operator hears is a buzzing
sound in his headset. He tries to pull something from this hornets nest
by:

1. Reducing the RF Gain on the rig to work the big boys and get them off
the pile first. If you hear him working the strong ones - wait.
2. I moved my RIT control around some. I liked to listen below my
sending frequency as most listen above. I must admit that I sometimes
was listening 1-2kz away from my sending frequency.
3. The most important thing to do is LISTEN!
4. If the Dx station stops sending, don't keep sending your call.
Sometimes we go to the bathroom, get a drink etc.
5. If the DX operator is listening say 1kz away, PLEASE DON"T SEND ON
HIS TX FREQUENCY! This happens all the time when a newbie to the pile
DOESN'T LISTEN. All it does is slow down his rate.
6. If you don't hear the DX station, wait a minute or two then look for
him somewhere close by. I have had to move away from a huge pile because
I no longer had control of it using 5w. Don't worry the pile will find
him VERY quickly.

These are just a few of the tricks of a DX Operator. I could write a
book on my experiences of operating as DX. I always had a fun time and
got to see new countries and meet new people. If you never have operated
as DX - what are you waiting for! I can't tell you how many hams have
said to me, " I'm gonna to that some day." Well folks some day never
came because they died before getting the opportunity to do it! Don't
let this happen to YOU. Well, that's my two cents.

72,
Ed, WA3WSJ

shows the varying power level as I increase or decrease itjust no power
output apparently. No sign of a transmitted signal on a secondary receiver.
The K2 receiver works just fine.

I'm thinking I may have inadvertantly pushed a buttom that shouldn't have been

Is it possible you are in Test Mode? Try holding the VOX button until you
see the mode display (TEST or OPER). Also a flashing C on the display

[Elecraft] Bencher/Elecraft Hex Paddle Dust Cover

2005-02-09 Thread Tony Martin W4FOA
Hi Gang,

I am SOOO pleased with my Bencher/Elecraft Hex paddle that I want to make sure
it stays clean and pretty until I become a SK. Does anyone know of a source
for a Paddle Dust Cover (plexiglass) for this jewel? I have been given a
couple of references (one WB3EVL and a WP4). One source says EVL is no longer
in business (an email has been sent to him) and the WP4 doesn't appear to be a
satisfactory option per reviews of his work and reliability.

Appreciate any tips.
