That definitely will not work: The impedance of the EFHW is much to high for any internal ATU to match. The 64:1 balun may work, though I haven't tried one. QRPKITS has a QRP tuner, but it works only on a single band. Most any of the external antenna tuners will work, though they may be lossy. The best solution, I think, is to build your own L-network tuner. One coil, a 3-position switch, and one variable capacitor. You don't have to get a perfect match, just within the range of the internal ATU, like 3:1. Once you find the right coil tap positions, the internal ATU should be able to handle the small mismatch with different antenna installations, etc. It may seem like a lot of trouble, but if you can match the EFHW, it's just about the most effective simple wire antenna you can use. 73, Scott K9MA -- Scott K9MA k...@sdellington.us __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to ve3...@rogers.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Field Ant. for 80/40/30
there is an End Fed Half Wave Antenna group on Facebook started up by N4LQ. it certainly promotes the EFHW fed with a 49:1 transformer. Steve loves the EFHW, but really does not have much love for 9:1 unun antenna. still, it is an interesting group to monitor. al ve3gam -- From: "Erik Basilier" Sent: Sunday, November 19, 2017 3:22 AM To: "'JT Croteau'" ; Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Field Ant. for 80/40/30 End-fed antennas have gotten popular lately. When I look closer I see two different popular approaches. The first uses a 9:1 impedance transformer in combination with a wire length that is not resonant on any band. The idea is that (assuming there is no significant feedline length) you have a medium impedance (450 ohms) on the antenna side of the transformer, and because the wire is not resonant so you might have an impedance into the wire that is also "medium". By adjusting the wire length, you might get pretty close to 450 ohms on one or two bands, and with a wide range tuner you can probably get below swr 2:1 for the radio PA to see. The second approach, used by MyAntennas and others seems to use a transformer with much higher impedance ratio. One way to construct such a transformer would be to cascade two 9:1 units for an effective ratio of 81:1. This would mean the wire should present an impedance of 4000 ohms or so. Another way would be using a single tranformer with a higher ratio. The impedance ratio is the square of the turns ratio. With a turns ratio of 9:1 you should again get to about 4000 ohms. Somewhere I saw somebody using an 8:1 turns ratio for an ideal antenna wire impedance of about 3200 ohms. These impedance levels are achieved by using a resonant wire. I don't know how you arrived at your parameters, but your wire length is too close to resonance on 80 and 40. Your transformer ratio wants a non-resonant wire, so you might see better results if you shorten the wire significantly and keep using the KX3 ATU. Alternatively, you could replace the transformer for a much higher impedance ratio, in which case you can probably operate with the tuner bypassed at least on 80 and 40 with a well adjusted wire length. With this approach you want the wire resonant on each band. It should be easy to achieve resonance on 80, 40, 20 and 10. As you double the frequency, you are changing the number of half wavelengths covered by the wire; the end feedpoint is always at the end of one of these half wavelengths, and thus you get the very high impedance that you seek. 30 meters does not fit as clearly into this scheme. The commercial versions use a small coil in the wire located close to the transformer end, and seem to be able to achieve a reasoable match for all the bands 80 and up without using a tuner. Now if you had placed the feedpoint in the center you would not have been able to get this consistency of feedpoint impedance from band to band. As I see it, this is a major reason for the popularity of the end-fed approach as contrasted to the conventional center-fed approach. Note that the 30m coverage of the 80 meter and up design is not replicated if you try the same approach with half the wire length. In this case you will need a tuner to get reasonable swr on 30. An important consideration is antenna height. We all know that antennas usually work better when placed higher. Looking a bit closer, we can look beyond the general installation height and consider the height(s) of the antenna part(s) that carry the most current. Antenna modelling may calculate the field as resulting from current levels in different individual pieces of the wire, and then it makes sense to elevate those portions more than other parts of the wire that carry less current. Another reason for this is the effect of ground losses. Jim Brown, in his article that he just linked to, shows that ground losses get worse the closer a vertical antenna is to ground. This makes sense as currents in the lossy soil are caused by induction from currents in the antenna. When we look at the current distribution within the vertical antenna wire it again makes sense to place the part(s) of the wire with high current higher rather than lower. One of the simplest portable antennas is a short wire or whip of a quarter wave or less. It will have a low feedpoint impedance that can probably be matched reasonably without a tuner or with a limited-range tuner. However, with a low impedance comes a current maximum at the feedpoint. This often means close to the ground, so even with a good set of elevated radials, considerable ground losses could be expected. (An actual connection to the soil would generally be much worse, unless you bury a lot of wires.) With a longer wire (1/2 wavelengh at the lowest band) we can have a very high feedpoint impedance, very low feedpoint current, and more elevated location(s) of hig

In fact, I can’t find any current production laptop that has stereo inputs except the Apple MacBook series and it doesn’t run windows natively, though there are a couple of hypervisor solutions. There are hundreds of models and I didn’t check every one but did check 25 or 30. I did call Dell and hp and ask them. There may be some and if there are I would love to know a brand and model. My next thought was so called USB sound cards. On the high end (price of a netbook and size of a KX3) there are lots of choices. There seem to be a number of Altoids tin sized USB “sound cards” some have stereo mic and / or line inputs and some don’t. Almost all the external devices emphasize the output functions and are skimpy on the input specs. Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] Help sought KX1 high SWR on 40 and balanced antenna
I would say try it with an analyser, see what you get, can't hurt may help you resolve your problem Al - Original Message - From: "Daniel Paul Perez" To: Cc: "Daniel Paul Perez" Sent: Tuesday, December 22, 2009 10:21 PM Subject: [Elecraft] [KX1] Help sought KX1 high SWR on 40 and balanced antenna Hi all! I’m having a hard go of it with Elecraft products. I had a bad experience with a K2 that just never worked right at my QTH. Gary at Elecraft looked at it twice and said it was extremely well built and an excellent sounding radio. Not for me. I finally sold it – I never ever heard a clear voice on it. Subsequently, I purchased an Icom703Plus and it is connected to a Cobra Senior Ultralight up 55-60’ at one end 45-50 at the other with center up about 40-45’; 450 ohm ladder line runs about 1’ foot through a casement window; to a Balun Designs 4:1 current balun; to a 3’ coax with 239 – 239 connectors. The radio tunes up on all bands with respectable swr and power. I turn it on and I use it – CW, LSB, USB. Good reports and work DX. Though having had really bad luck with a QRP K2 I really enjoy reading about Elecraft products and reading this reflector. There are many really bright, helpful, engaged and kind folks here. So … I decided to go it again with a KX1. KX1 was built by Don Wilhelm in July 2009 and I have no doubt it is built extremely well. When I hook the KX1 to the same antenna using an amphenol 239/BNC adapter e.g. Antenna setup is KX-1 | bnc/239 converter | 3 feet coax 239 both ends | Balun Designs Current Balun 3Kw model 4113t | 450ohm window ladder line | through casement window | Cobra Ultralite Sr. it is getting respectable power and swr on 80, 30 and 20. Though 40 will throw a high power value and r9.9. My first thought is there’s something up with the KX1 – I’m still not sure. Examples: Before with Antenna I was getting: 3 525 p3.5 r1.1 7 025 p6.3 r9.9 10 112 p4.5 r2.5 14 025 p3.0 r1.6 With 50ohm dummy load at the end of the 3 foot coax (this is the only coax in the equation both scenarios – previously goes into balun), I get: 3 603 p4.2 r1.0 .|| 7 125 p4.2 r1.0 . 10 145 p5.5 r1.0 . 14 025 p3.5 r1.0 .|| I have a Diamond SX-200 meter and a Tokyo Hypower HC 200AT auto-tuner in addition to the KXAT1 and the Icom’s internal tuner. So I set out to try to understand this antenna’s properties e.g. un-tuned native swr, forward power and reflected power. I tried turning ATU to CAL and measuring SWR on the diamond meter on all 4 bands and it is pretty much all over the map – it’s also hard to manually Cal the meter without being able to key down. I tried this with the KX1/HyPower as well and saw swr’s in the 1’s, 2 and 3’s and sometimes higher. In both cases the external tuner or meter were between radio and balun. I do not have something right with the KX1/Hypower my though understanding is that I set menu KX1 ATU to CAL to turn off tune, press buttons to ATU or key down and press tune on HyPower. I got a very inconsistent set of results with the HyPower. I thought of using an analyzer but am told the Cobra Senior is really difficult to analyze with something like the MFJ259/269. I tried connecting just one side of the Cobra Sr. to the HyPower wire lead and was amazed at the magnitude of difference in sound – the KX1 simply came to life crackling and buzzing with all sorts of CW – really astounding. Was fine with coax, but simply amazingly louder with the long wire. Trying to tune the wire with KX1/HyPower gave SWRs in the 4s, 5s, 6s. Tried the other wire as well with same result. I’m genuinely trying to figure out how to figure out what and if there is a problem with the Antenna. I’m also trying to figure out what is up with the KX1. Dummy load yields good power and SWR 1.0. Before I decide to hastily part with the KX1 and call it quits with Elecraft – I thought I’d ask for some help and guidance to help me understand how to make this antenna better or to understand its native properties and to be able to turn on an Elecraft radio / this Elecraft radio, use it, hear it and have no issues. Thanks for your help. I made one when I built The Ultimate Keyer Mk2 by G3RVM in the February 1980 issue of Radio Communication. I used two thin strips of copper clad board. Mine was double sided but singe sided is all that's needed. I sawed a small diecast box to get two nice right angle brackets and screwed them on the base of the main diecast box where I had the electronics. The PCB strips came out the front of the box separated about half an inch. I used stick-on rubber feet as the thumb abd finger contacts. For the switch contacts, I drilled quarter inch staggered holes in the PCBs and using the other two corners of the cut box, mounted them outside the PCBs with a long screw going through each PCB hole. So the mounts for the screws are both outside the strips. The PCB strips were nicely springy and I adjusted the screws to a very fine touch. I bought a Bencher paddle soon afterwards. I have no idea why I dismantled my own paddles; I remember their being just as good as the Bencher.
