[Elecraft] What is the big surprise being announced on Thursday?

2015-05-13 Thread W0UCE
To:

All who won't sleep well tonight because of being frustrated by what the
Elecraft Dynamic Duo will announce tomorrow morning...

There is hope... Here is a hint...

Perhaps, just perhaps my pal who lives not far away and goes by the name
Don Yes, the one who makes excellent technical posts on this reflector
could possibly be "shall we say enticed" into spelling some beans just after
midnight this evening...

A $1,000.00 PayPal contribution to "Maybe Don will spill the beans" might
just result in you enjoying a good night's sleep.

Hi Hi... My apology... I just couldn't resist doing this.

Whatever the Elecraft Dynamic Duo release will be worth the wait…

Jack WØUCE

[Elecraft] Strange K3 Lockup Problem

2013-12-11 Thread W0UCE
Has anyone experienced this strange K3 Lockup problem?

For a second time my K3 locks up when I change bands while using N1MM. The
first instance was two weeks ago when I entered a 20m frequency while on 15
meters. The same thing happened today. After the first lock up I called
Elecraft and Tech Support told me it was communications buffer overload,
shut down the radio, logging and any other software and reboot the computer.
The problem occurred the first time during an afternoon CWops Mini Test
event. This morning no problem then this afternoon the lockup occurred
again which hints of a possible RF problem but why in the morning and not
afternoon? I'll put a couple more clamp on ferrites on the microHam CW
Keyer power, USB and Keying Cable to see if it helps.

N1MM running on a one year old System 7 O/S, plenty of memory and nothing
but N1MM and microHam Router / microHam CW Keyer running. The K3 receives
on whatever frequency it is on but no front panel controls function upon
lockup. Shutting down the K3, KPA, N1MM, microHam Router doesn't
immediately resolve the lockup but wait 30 - 40 minutes and the K3 lockup
problem resolves itself.

Any suggestions will be appreciated: Update firmware for example? N1MM
and microHam Router / CW Keyer are latest versions.

Thanks in advance for any help or recommendations.

[Elecraft] Wounded Warrior Project

2013-08-22 Thread W0UCE
I read recent posts about Don Wilhelm and others contributing to a "Wounded
Warrior" ham radio project. Should Elecraft, or any other group or
organization elect to sponsor, support or put together an ongoing ham radio
program for wounded warriors, I would very much like to offer my personal
support. This old Navy Chief, Vietnam Vet well knows what we did to enhance
moral running phone patches for anyone who could get to our humble shack in
Vietnam back in the 60s.

Please do not construe what I am about to say as a plug for a company I am
involved with. Universal Device Control Systems will be honored and happy
to support station automation, local and remote system applications for
wounded warrior ham radio projects. It is my humble opinion our country
does not do enough for those who protect our freedom.

Thanks & 73,
Jack - W0UCE

[Elecraft] Morse Code Proficiency

2012-11-09 Thread W0UCE
To become a proficient CW Operator the individual should most certainly
learn Morse Code as a Language just as infants learn to talk. Learn the
sound and rhythm of words, then phrases and copy in your head. Throw away
the Pen and Paper. I teach beginners Morse Code at 20 WPM, they don't know
the difference so why start at 5 WPM when you can learn at 20?

For those who would like assistance in learning or improving the art of
using Morse Code, the CW Operators Club offers free "Elemering" Visit
www.cwops.org and click on the CW Academy Page. There is also reference and
self help information on the Morse Code Page on my website www.w0uce.net

As one of the CWops Academy instructors, I assure everyone, help is there
for the asking.

[Elecraft] First KAT out of the Bag

2012-10-27 Thread W0UCE
A litter of two KAT 500s was delivered on my doorstep late yesterday
afternoon. The first KAT is now installed and fully integrated with my K-3,
P3, KPA500 and now KAT500. The fist KAT out of the bag makes everything in
the lineup happy, especially me. All antennas tune like a dream
automatically, band segments are
recalled, QSY and Band Changes are a breeze 160 - 6m. The Aux Cable
simplified installation and integration, 20 minutes including removing the
LDG 600 Auto Tuner. I'm a CW only Op so I didn't have to go bottom to top of
all bands for initial tuning. Regardless, I am very impressed with the KAT
500.

The second KAT will be installed with my backup set up, a TS-480 driving a
KPA-500 soon to be followed by the second KAT. Integration won't be as
smooth but I'm confident the line up will work well together.

Thanks Elecraft for another great product.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT 500 Shipping Schedule

2012-08-30 Thread W0UCE
For all of us who have KAT 500s on order it is time to reflect on what we
were taught by loving parents during our formative years:

1. All good things come to he who waits
2. You can't be that hungry, you just had lunch
3. Dinner will be on the table when it is ready
4. Clean your plate, some hungry person would love to have that
5. Just you wait until your father gets home
6. Patience my son, patience
7. Because I said so, that's why

So what do those formative year lessons have to do with KAT 500?

The answers are clear and well defined:
1. Last week, thanks to some very diligent field testing, we discovered a
way to significantly reduce LC network losses on the highest bands
(especially on 6 meters)
2. We just redesigned the PC board to take advantage of this, so you'll
be getting a better ATU
3. This will push the production schedule out farther
4. We had to scrap a lot of material, but the change will be
worth the trouble
5 We'll post a revised shipping date as soon as Eric recovers from his
latest hamfest adventure

Those things said, the most important answer is the same as #7 from our
parents... Because I said so, that's why.

We need to take a lesson from the past. Our parents had our best interests
at heart and Elecraft, only Elecraft, has the same in providing what is best
for Elecraft customers.

[Elecraft] Ultimate Station Control Requirements Wish List

2012-04-25 Thread W0UCE
I am compiling a product development requirements document for a consortium
of companies that intends to develop, manufacture and market the "ULITMATE
Ham Radio Station Control System."

If you would like to have an expandable station control system to select TX
and RX antennas, SO2R, , have more than one radio share TX and RX Antennas,
switch Audio In, Audio Out, Keying Leads, distribute 12 and 24 volt DC and
most any and all other functions to make your station the ultimate in
flexibility and control using mouse clicks, touch screen push buttons and
custom assignable labels what would your wish list contain? The system will
consist of a common mounting shelf that will house plug in card modules. To
expand or add additional functions the user will simply purchase function
cards, plug them in the shelf, make plug in connections and set
configuration options.

If you care to participate, I would appreciate receiving a "Bullet Type Wish
List" e-mail with your list. At this point, I don't need details, simply a
"Wish List"

(Examples)

* Up to 10 TX Antennas shared with 2 radios
* Up to 8 RX Antennas share with 2 radios
* Control of current off the shelf remote coax switches
* Remote relays over Blue Tooth or 802.11, RS-232 and/or cable pairs
* Be able to use K-3 or XYZ Radio to drive a KPA 500 or any other
amplifier with a touch of a button or mouse click to switch Amp In,
Audio/Key/ALC
* Have Lock Out if a particular antenna is selected - Ant 1 for TX and
Ant 2 for RX, etc.
* One button change from SO1R to SO2R
* Switch one set of paddles to two different keyers
* Key two radios at the same time
*   "What else?"

There is virtually no end to what the wish list may contain but please be
realistic in what you would consider useful and you would consider
purchasing if it fit your needs and the price was right...

Thanks & 73,

Jack

Re: [Elecraft] What Happened to the KAT500

2012-03-09 Thread W0UCE
If the Elecraft reflector was a Dear Abby Column in the newspaper, my letter
would read:

Dear Abby:

The best of the best ham radio gear manufacturers recently had a letter in
your column stating

We revised the PCB one more time to make it easier to manufacture.

Should have these "final" (we hope) boards in by next week. If all

goes well, we'll be down to one final impediment: me. I have to revise

the sheet metal drawings.

Sorry for the delay.

Wayne

Abby, I am ready to place my order as soon as Mr. Wayne says "OK" What
should I do

in the meantime?

Signed

Anxious in NC

Dear Anxious in NC:

All good things come to he who waits. Be patient, Elecraft will provide.

[Elecraft] Product Information

2012-03-05 Thread W0UCE
Wayne & Eric:

While many customers anxiously await KX3 product release there are also many
Elecraft customers like myself that EAGERLY await KAT 500 product
information such as specs, features, functions, anticipated first KAT500
assembled and kit shipping dates. Will there be a pre-release order list

as with the KX3 etc. Please, please let anxious "Customers" in on the
secrets such as KAT 500:

* Product drawings that were promised weeks ago

* Product functions, features and specifications

* Product physical dimensions

* Will there be a pre-release order sign up list?

* When will Elecraft begin accepting orders?

* When does Elecraft expect to commence shipping kits and assembled
units?

* Pricing information, even if preliminary

Any and all information Elecraft would be so very kind to release will be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KPA 1500 - What is next?

2012-02-22 Thread W0UCE
Before Elecraft even considers or starts working on anything else new, I for
one would be most grateful if the powers that be would release the KAT-500
to market or at least provide some reliable "take it to the bank" type
information.

At recent hamfest Elecraft booth duty individuals are saying is obviously
fictional and whatever they think a prospective buyer wants to hear and they
have nothing to back up what they are saying...

When can we expect to receive some factual information about the KAT500?

[Elecraft] KAT 500s in February

2011-12-28 Thread W0UCE
Reference the latest about KAT 500 shipments:

"As I mentioned maybe a month ago, we make a mid-course change to the KAT500
design (3 antenna jacks, no internal balun). We're just completing the
prototypes with these changes. I suspect we'll have some field-test units
out in late January/early February. If all goes well that means end of
February for first shipments, but don't quote me. Getting a bit busy around
here"

I apologize in advance to Elecraft but as an anxious KAT 500 awaiter... I
just gotta say I hope units do go out the end of February. Next spring I
just don't wanna post "Spring has sprung, the grass has riz I wonder where
some KAT500s is"

[Elecraft] PowerWerx P/S Noise Problem Clarification

2011-09-13 Thread W0UCE
Perhaps I did not explain the noise problem, cause and cure situation
correctly. One of the P/S was purchased from a friend, the other I bought
new. The one purchased from my friend had been used; the input power select
switch on the back had be changed to 110V as it should be for 110v
operation.

I had both P/S sitting side-by-side and had not yet changed the power in
220/110 switch setting to 110 on the new supply. I mistakenly picked up the
new one and used it with the K-3. Operating the P/S on 110 with the input
power select on 220 caused the K-3 to sound like a Marconi Spark Gap
Transmitter.

The fix was simple, change the input power switch to 110. "My bad"

[Elecraft] Power Werx S5-30DV Switching P/S "Heads Up"

2011-09-12 Thread W0UCE
I recently acquired two Power Werx S5-30DV Switching Power Supplies.

While the P/S are nice and small, work on 110 / 220 and easily powered my
K-3 and TS-480, BEWARE... The P/S come from the factory set for 220V
(Slide Switch Selection on the back) The documentation sheet with the P/S
doesn't mention the factory default setting of 220.

If you power a K-3 or most likely any other rig without changing the input
voltage setting to 110 if you run the P/S on 110 and don't change the input
voltage switch to 110, you will have terrible AC on transmit when the RF
level of the radio is increased over 10 Watts.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Air Flow Space Concern

2011-07-22 Thread W0UCE
I am rebuilding my station console and would like to put a wooden shelf
above my KPA500 but am concerned about blocking air flow to the top of the

the amp I can cut an opening for airflow space if necessary.

If anyone has experience or suggestions regarding minimum space for airflow

you have any questions."

Apparently orders are not being filled starting 4/15 as stated on the
