[Elecraft] Strange P3 behavior
Gents: Since I installed the KXV3B to add the second pre-amp in one of my K3's, I have experienced strange behavior in my P3. There seems to be lots of ghost traces (really bad when station has big signal) as well as these strange "humps" on the scope. Makes no difference if noise blanker (P3) is on or off. use this K3 on 6 meters only. K3 # 1 without the KXV3B has no issues. Anyone else experienced this or is this problem confined to my install. Re: [Elecraft] P3 TX Mon question
The radio with the TX Mon is on 6 meters only. The HF antennas are about 200 feet away and about 150 feet high. That equates to around 90 feet Above the six meter antenna.. Thought that would be adequate. This never happens on the Power Master meter or on the LP-100.. Only the TX Mon. Re: [Elecraft] P3 TX mon
Yes, the full scale is adjustable to 200 w, 700w, 1200w, and 2000w.. Maybe a future firmware update will include an Auto option that will select whatever power level it sees like most power meters have. I have mine set to 2000w because I run a Command tech amp on 6m, but when I’m running the K3 by itself, the bar display is very low.. However, the digital readout indicates the correct power. I wondered how this worked. My P3TXMON was shipped this week so ill get to play with it soon, but one would think the scale would be adjustable so that whatever power is seen, you could make that the full scale. This is just a scaling issue. Otherwise running the KPA500 with the 2000 watt sensor will only use one-quarter of the scale. Obviously the digital display still works right because no scaling is involved. Dr. William J. I thought I pass on the word if you have not checked out the new release of the Win4K3/KX3 Suite (http://va2fsq.com/) and you have a KX3 or K3, you should. Version 1.708 has a number of significant improvements to the spectrum scope. One such improvement is a rework of the downsampling of DSP data for the display. My buddies and I gave Tom some feedback and showed him what we like in other panadapters. He took our suggests and did something with it. New routines now display many more peaks than previously and even many more than the NAP3 panadapter display. I use to be a beta tester for NAP3, and I have extremely impressed with Tom's development. It seems to be an incredibly stable software product. When I compared it side by side with NAP3, Win4K Suite found signals NAP3 did not see. There is flexibility to use either a 16 bit or 24 bit sound card. There are 32bit and 64bit releases, too. One of the things that is nice is the customization of the panadapter display. You can put in your band limits for your zone or license class, and define colors nicely. There were some refinements of the terminal window, too. I used the a pre-release during SS SSB with N1MM+ and both were very stable. During SS CW, I was able run CW Skimmer, CW Get, use the Terminal to capture long strings of the K3 decodse of CW, and run N1MM+. I've never been able to run on CW during a contest before. But with all that going, I was able to get long cw runs going day and night on 40m, rates twice as high as any of my previous search and pounce rates. Lots of fun. A big batch of LoTW confirmations afterwards towards 40m CW WAS, too! I use com0com with Win4K Suite for virtual com port support, then run HRD Logger application, and HRD Rotator (when not using N1MM+) with Win4K Suite. I no longer use HRD's Rig Control. Win4K suite replace HRD's Rig Control as the server HRD and other apps can connect to in order to access the K3/KX3. HRD Logger works extremely well with Win4k suite. click on a dx spot in HRD Logger or Win4K3 dx window, and the radio QSYs. Nice! With HRD Logger and Win4K cluster window open, you can be connected to two different DX Clusters like Club Log (synched with your DXCC Status) and HRD Logger (also synched with your DX status). Then using the spectrum you can look, listen and feel on the DX is working and where! Awesome. He has a nice split feature that allow you to click on split, then right click up 1, 3, 5 or 10. Quick and not mistakes sending on the DX station wanting to work split. Give it a try during CQ WW CW or chasing DX/WAS, I think you will be excited with the product. 73, Doug NA1DX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to w4...@w4ccs.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Win4K3 Suite
All: A few days ago, I posted that I could never get the Win4K3 suite to work on my system.. Well, that was true at the time.. However, since then Tom has spent countless hours looking at my system, finding errors within the MicroHam Router program and his own program. I'm very glad to report the program now works flawless here.. Tom stands tall with his customer service we have all come to expect . Kind of like Elecraft service..!! Tom has done a super job on this software. The Terminal part of it is also easy to use and a nice feature. 73 Gerald KC6CNN On Oct 24, 2014 8:58 AM, Doug Ellmore d...@ellmore.net wrote: Last night I installed a new release of Win4K3 Suite (http://va2fsq.com/). Both radios had the most recent Elecraft updates. An example desktop image is at my web site: http://ellmore.net/na1dx/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/desktop-na1dx-10-2 3-2014-example.jpg To support additional virtual com port management, I used the recommended release of com0com: http://sourceforge.net/projects/com0com/files/com0com/2.2.2.0/ On the desktop I have HRD Log and HRD Rotor, Win4K3 Suite, and NAP3 4.x running. For sometime I have been using with my K3 and KX3 with a number of software products for dxing and contesting: - Ham Radio Deluxe 6.x - dxing and log management - LPBridge - for virtual com ports - NAP3 v4.x - for Panadapter, with Spots displayed and conversational cw/psk/rtty - N1MM for contesting - CW Skimmer - for finding and work DX and Contest stations - FLDIGI - contest grade digital mode with N1mm - WinTelnetX (to handle multi dx clusters) Win4KSuite replaces HRD's radio controller and server HamRadioDeluxe application, so you can just run HRD's HRDLogbook application, which interfaced really well with Win4K3Suite. QSY from spots from HRD Log or the ClubLog spots from within Win4K3 Suite were quick. I was able to test the Win4K3 scope and NAP3 v4.x at the same time. I use an LP Pan interface in my K3 configuration. I use Steinberg UR22 USB 192kz external sound cards with ASIO drivers for both my K3 and KX3 home QTH configurations. When operating remote at the beach, etc., I usually just use the built in sound card of my laptop with my KX3. I really like the radio interface controls with the windows of Win4K3 Suite. You can have a big radio window or a smaller radio window with multiple tabs to access all the controls. The controls are intuitive and well laid out. Tom Blahovici is the creator. I have to give him a high five for the product at this point. I like the SDR features accessible via the software, but I also like radios with knobs! Tom's software and Elecraft give us good integration both. My next step is do start testing Win4K3 Suite this weekend with N1MM+. Re: [Elecraft] RCS-12 or Station Master for K3?
I have used the MicroHam Station Master for many months without issues. It does exactly what I wanted it to do. It interfaced with my Array Solutions 6-Pak switch very well. That being said, It is not plug and play. You will need to setup lots of parameters within the USB device router software, But, once it is setup, no need for further action. W4CCS On 5/20/2012 5:23 PM, N4QS wrote: Ignacy, I ordered and attempted to install the RCS-12 last summer. It did not interface well with the K3/KPA500. I was going to have to build an interface box to get it work with the K3. I also had problems with the type of socket they were using for connecting the cable going to my remote switch. Only five of eight positions worked at all, and they were intermittent creating open circuits which weres causing my KPA500 solid state amp to suddenly see very high SWR while transmitting. After a month of trial and error and two replacement cable connectors from Ameritron, I asked for my money back and to their credit they let me ship the unit back for a full refund. So I would not recommend the RCS-12 based on my personal experience. I have not used or tried any Microham products. But I just recently purchased the Elecraft KRC2 automatic band decoder. This is a very high quality product and it was very easy to wire for my remote RC8S switch. It interfaces very nicely to the K3/KPA500 when I use a Y cable coming out of the Auxilliary Port on the K3. The Y cable splits in two -- one cable goes to the KPA500 amp and the other connects to the KRC2. The KRC2 follows the K3 automatically and switches between four antennas. It works really well and I would highly recommend it. It even works on 6 meters. K3 5553 arrived about 24 hours ago.. Five hours last night and 3 today and she is on the air..!! What a joy to assemble the K3 and other Eklecraft equipment. Not a single thing was missing (actually had extra hardware it the kit), every test was successful and all calibration went without a hitch. The is my second K3.. The first was factory assembled and I really wanted to try building one. It was GREAT.. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and HRD turning AGC off
Hi Stephen: YES, the same thing happens to me several times a week.. I have the same setup as you referenced to K3-HRD and I'm also using the HRD logbook and DX Cluster.. de W4CCS On 5/7/2011 10:14 AM, Stephen Prior wrote: I have (and I think I reported some time ago) been experiencing occasional AGC misbehaviour where the AGC would suddenly turn off. Insofar as I can remember this has only happened on ssb and up until now I had formed the impression that I may have rf getting in somewhere as it only seemed to be apparent after going back to receive. However, three times today the AGC has without warning turned off, and not whilst transmitting. (I have been more active than normal, exercising my GR call!). On one occasion I was listening on 15m usb and as I was looking at the display I saw the 's' disappear it was probably coincidence that a station had just started to call on the frequency, but maybe not. This time I have been outside cutting grass and returned to find the AGC had turned itself off again. I am running Ham Radio Deluxe, but only for the logbook, however that requires the main control program to be running too. HRD is constantly polling the K3 of course and perhaps a rogue command is entering the stream somewhere. I am using the same prolific chipped usb adaptor that I have successfully used for years with a variety of OS's. Now using windows 7 64 bit. I can't remember if it happened on the previous XP machine. I have closed down HRD and not found the problem to re-occur, but to be honest the length of time for which I have listened without HRD running is small by comparison and the problem is sporadic to say the least. Nothing I do to HRD seems to be able to force the problem. Not Elecraft's problem I'm sure, but I am curious as to whether anyone else has noticed this issue before I venture onto the HRD forum, where they can be a little over-defensive at times :-) 73, Stephen G4SJP K3 #980 and P3, latest firmwares. Re: [Elecraft] New Firmware Issues with K3
Hi Allen: No, when I click on just a band change, all work as designed.. Problem exist when I click on the spot in the DX cluster.. The problem started with the P3 roll out and I was able to adjust the com port polling to get it to work but after the last firmware update, nothing I adjust on the com port allowed it to work. I reverted back to the older firmware and it started working OK again. Something in the last version made it unhappy.. THANKS de W4CCS On 10/14/2010 12:36 PM, Alan Bloom wrote: Jim, Thanks for the clarification. So it only does it when changing bands using a DX cluster. Unfortunately the computer that I use for testing does not have an Internet connection. (For security reasons - it's has all my P3 development code which I really don't want to risk getting hacked.) So I can't test with a DX cluster. Does the problem occur if you change bands in HRD by clicking on a band button? I tested with HRD's command tester (Tools-Command Tester) and HRD reports an error response to the FA command. I think that's just the way HRD works. Any time you send a command that has no response (most set commands) it reports an Error in the received column. I checked and it still does it with older K3 firmware (04.12) and no P3 connected. Hi Gary: Here is my take on Dayton 2010.. The Elecraft booth was by far the most popular place to be. Saw the new P3 and the new KPA500. Both were impressive. No pictures from me. I had enough to tote around.. The new Kenwood radio was good to see but not a lot of interest by my observation. Yaesu's boot was full mostly of people looking for a free hat, myself included ( just put it on the self with the other 6 or 7 I have). Alpha showed there new 6 meter offering. Runs a 4CX1500 tube and will delver lots of smoke on six. Not yet type accepted or priced but the rumor was 5 to 6k.. OUCH..!! The bone yard was much better this year over last. Much less plain junk, lots of land mobile junk.. Lots more actual ham equipment. My observation is that this Datyton was much better then last year. Had lots of fun and met lots of great hams. I came to the opposite conclusion but I'm willing to wait for more information. If you want to run anything else on the PC based on the K3 IF output, CWSkimmer for example, you would still need something like LP-PAN and a high sample rate audio card. If you make that investment, I don't know why you would also buy a P3 when it really doesn't seem to do anything that PowerSDR-IF (which is free) can't do. It aso seems that there is no mouse control for the P3 which I think is a drawback. I admit that I would like that 'toy' but I don't think I could justify buying it solely based on a capability that exceeds what can be done with a PC which I don't think it has. Now, if you just WANT it, I can understand that. [Elecraft] Firmware upload problem
Attempted to upload new firmware to the K3 this morning and got the MCU LD error. Now the K3 is basically dumb. In the manual, it says to unplug the power for 5 seconds, Hold the power button for approximately 10 seconds and then re-load the firmware. My problem is that I can no longer get the computer to talk to the K3 and therefore cannot attempt a re-load. I'm using the Microham router software to talk to the K3 and this has been working great until now. Question, does the K3 keep the old settings (38400, 8, N, 1) or does it resort back to the default settings which are ?? I also tried a direct cable (straight and null modem) and cannot get any communication to occur. I'm stuck until I get the K3 talking to the computer again.. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Service
I could not agree more. Rene did the work on my K3 as well.. I purchased mine used and thought it had a few issues. Instead of trying to resolve them myself, I sent it to Elecraft for a check up and installation of an option I wanted but was not included on my k3 (sn 2090). Rene called me at least three times during the process to ask questions and keep me informed about it's progress. Never had I experienced this kind of service before from a radio manufacture. Thanks Elecraft and Rene..!! de W4CCS On 2/2/2010 12:50 PM, Ron Freeman wrote: Several weeks ago I sent my K3, #1665, back to Elecraft for production updates since Oct '08. It was obviously handled with care and returned in the same cosmetic condition as sent. I believe the cost for this service was very reasonable-I couldn't be more satisfied. 73 k5mm/ron __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
