In that case, I'd like to ad that I am sick and tired of having to GET UP from radioing with my K3 and WALK to the kitchen to fix coffee and those toasted cheese appetizers that you talked me out of. Why doesn't Elecraft ad a small coffee maker and toaster oven to the K3? Just an option, of course, but surely a badly needed one. Strictly depends on the power level you intend to run. I ran my KX3 at 5w for all of Field Day, and for a two-day camping trip last weekend without charging in between. It's a K2 Energy lithium ion and weighs just a few ounces. Couldnt be happier with it. After 4 days of off-on operating, still produces 12.4 volts. YMMV. -73- de W4SK I would appreciate knowing the experiences of folks who have run their K3 on battery power for several (4-8?) hrs., with perhaps a 20% TX duty cycle. I bought the 8-pole filters to give it the steepest skirts. I bought a few extras, but I did not stuff it full. I find the K3 QSK is excellent if you are wondering. Pretty much, everything about CW is user tailored. The CWT feature is great. I find operating conveniences are excellent. The chassis size has been fine for me. As for the menu question, it gives me no trouble, and using a menu is seldom needed. IMHO, the menu system is easy to use, and affords versatility to the radio. Your decision should include the future possibility of adding a P3 pan adapter. It adds flexibility and control to operating. The K-3 with one filter for CW will be more expensive than the Eagle with one filter (not by much) and of course the Eagle is not a kit. I operate mostly CW for rag chew, occasional contest, and DX. I do not think that I need all the options shown on the Elecraft website order form. I have never seen a K-3 up close, but I am concerned about the menu that some say takes a lot of getting used to. Hi All, I’ve never been particularly interested in paying for the “privilege” of advertising someone’s commercial product. It’s one thing to buy your shirt, hat, or whatever, with a club logo or name when it’s a non-commercial entity. However, there is something dissatisfying in functioning as a “billboard” and paying to do it. Yaesu, and some others, pass out stuff like this for free at Dayton. There’s a reason they do that. It gets their name out there—en masse—and they have obviously concluded that the expense is justified. Perhaps they view it more as “customer relations”, but I doubt it. There is “method to their madness”. Most of the time these items are purchased in bulk, and at very nominal cost. Sports figures wear logo apparel but they don’t pay to do it—they get paid! And a bunch of those folks are people you’ve never heard of, or may never hear about! Not that we deserve to get paid, but I don’t think we should have to “contribute” to their advertising budget either. There is great value (apparently) in just getting your name out there, and you might be surprised how much some companies will pay just to influence a single potential customer. What really gets me is when we are expected to pay “top dollar” for something with a company logo on it. Not only are they using us as a billboard, but they are also making a profit center for themselves out of the process. Crazy! Yeah, I know, it is gratifying to many to have somebody’s logo on their hat, shirt, or whatever. If that really appeals to you then I have no argument against it. Besides, maybe you just need a hat or shirt, and this is a convenient way to get one. It just doesn’t appeal to me. Actually, every so often (but not very often) I see something like that which really looks “cool” and seems particularly attractive. But it’s usually not the logo, it’s the style or unique nature of it that is attractive. I’m not much of a “fashion plate” when it comes to hats anyway. I usually wear a somewhat goofy looking terrycloth bucket hat, mainly because it is imminently more practical (I can wet it down if it’s hot—like on the golf course, and it shades my face better). I do have a rather cool looking baseball cap which has Begali’s logo on it. It’s good looking (I think), and unique. I greatly admire Begali products, so I’m happy to wear it and be a “billboard” for him. The clincher, though, is that Piero gave it to me, I didn’t have to buy it! I also greatly admire Elecraft products—I certainly have enough of them! However, I don’t feel inclined to pay to advertise for them. But, maybe they will come up with something that is so good looking I would be inclined to do so. That would be different! Obviously there are many out there who won’t agree with what I have said. There seems to be something of a “frenzy” going on about having an Elecraft hat. Nevertheless, several have expressed disappointment that they weren’t free. So, I guess I might have at least a few folks who sympathize with my view. Then Elecraft does not have to bother directly with the hat guys. If you take it to the full extreme we could maybe have hats and shirts and look cool at field days, club events and ham shows. However, I could convince it to tune the antenna while I was touching the case of the transceiver (I have been doing some simulations In order to gain some understanding why the german Multiband-Fuchskreis sold by a german Elecraft reseller seems to work in some situations and doesn't work for others and just used what I learned from my simulations) Obviously the counterpoise was missing (or in my words the capacitance of the case to ground was not high enough). I could not test if plugging the headphones in and using them is sufficient to increase the capacitance sufficiently ;-) So, although not directly related to elevated radials, this former OT post has a relation to Elecraft equipment now ;-) BTW, is there any idea concerning the order of magnitude of the capacitance of a human body (6ft tall, normal weight) with respect to ground? IMPT POINT: If you want your antenna actually to have a vertical radiation pattern (low angle, omni-directional) then the elevated radials must be symmetric. If there are two, they must be of exactly equal length and point in exactly opposite directions. If there are four, they must be equal and point in directions 90 degrees from one another. This symmetry guarantees that the radials do not radiate. The do carry currents, they do help resonate the antenna, but if they are symmetric radiation from them cancels and they therefore do not radiate appreciably. 73, Oliver W6ODJ On 18 Jan. 2013, at 06:46 AM, Joe Subich, W4TV li...@subich.com wrote: Personally, I do wonder about the new fangled no radials required antennas. Perhaps the way to go is a new antenna that just gets bolted to a post and a feedline attached. Sure makes life easier and from folks I talk to all the time - they do work. Forget that they are a little expensive. You buy an antenna to use for years. Read the eHam reviews and see what other users are saying before you buy anything. Ask on the air. The best I ever had was a Butternut of some kind over a bunch of buried fence. Might still be the way to go. But, if I was doing it now, I'd be looking at a no radials required antenna. [Elecraft] K3 ProSet Mic Adaptor
When I recently changed to a new K3, I retained my old Heil ProSet. I notice on the Elecraft order page that a new ProSet and adaptor is available, but no where (including on the Heil page) do I find just the adaptor. Hints? -73- John T. Got it this morning and measured the output voltage. Mine sits right at 13.8 volts, so I immediately hooked it up to the KX3. Full load with the KX3 key down putting out 12 watts, the thing sits pretty much rock solid at 13.6 and key up it goes back to 13.8 and stays there so it's got good regulation and will handle the rig nicely. The power cord is ferrite choked right where it comes out of the supply and the plug, even though it isn't a right angle one, fits the KX3's power jack perfectly. Next, I started looking for birdies using the KX3 with a 4 pickup loop I made with a BNC to double binding post adapter. The P/S box has an LED indicator on it and with the loop laid on the case near the LED, I got some pretty loud broadband noise that covered everything from 160-6 meters, but fell off and was undetectable with the loop 4 inches from the box. I ran through each band individually and could find no birdies attributable to this power supply in any ham band 160-6 meters. This was confirmed by shutting the supply down whenever I found noise or carrier type birdies and they stayed where they were. For less than 9 bucks this supply appears to be really pretty decent to carry along. It has at least a 3 foot AC cord that plugs into the box and the output cord is very close to 5 feet long so you have a lot of leeway in P/S placement. According to the specs shown on eBay, it has both over current and over voltage protection. I didn't short out the plug to find out if it shut down would blow an internal fuse as the supply is sealed and I didn't want to chance ruining it before getting a chance to take it on a trip. I've been using it this morning to power the KX3 on the bench and hanging out around 14.060 looking for QRP contacts. The KX3's voltage monitor is indicating right at 13.8 volts and .250 milliamps of current. Backlight is on, audio set to 20 with VFO noise reduction on, RX isolation on and the 20db preamp is on so 250 milliamps is just about right for current draw at 13.8V. Pretty decent lilttle supply for the money and RF wise, it's extremely quiet compared to some I've seen. Jim - W0EB I use this one...14 volts, 4 amps. The plug on it fits the KX3 and the open ckt voltage is 14 vdc exactly. http://www.ebay.com/itm/KSAS065-65W-Adapter-power-supply-Output- 14Vdc-4A-2-1mm-plug-NEW-FREE-SHIP- /261135859531?pt=US_Monitor_Power_Supplieshash=item3ccce8ff4b Chuck, KE9UW Lionel Trains, TCA, LCCA, LRRC aka Jack, BMW Motorcycles BMWMOA #224 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html - No virus found in this message. Ordered my K-3 on Sunday, shipped on Wednesday. Paid for 3-day UPS, so they flew it from Cal to South Carolina (note: I am in Nashville), where it has sat in the UPS facility for the last day and a half. In South Carolina. Go figure. John T.
