Re: [Elecraft] XV144 - does it power spike

2012-12-21 Thread w8zn
Most of the YaKeIc I've ever worked with have this issue. Anytime you use ALC
to control the power output there is a chance that that can happen if you are
turning the power way down. When the rig is first keyed, there is a window
before the ALC voltage is set properly that can allow this. It may be only
milliseconds but with solid state devices, that could be all it takes. With
transveters in general, they operate from a low level stage and the effects on
ALC are either minimal or non-existant. In the case of the K2 and K3's with
their external transverters, I do not believe they incorporate any ALC so
whatever you set the drive level to, that's all you get. For many years we at
K8GP used TS850's to drive DEM transverters using the low level outputs from
the 850's and never had an issue. Now that we have many K3's in the group
(YEA), they even work better. Now the nay-sayers will condem not using ALC
but in the transverter world, the correct way to set one up is to watch
the output power while increasing the drive level. Once a peak is reached (or
you get to the amount of drive needed for your amp), back the drive off
slightly and you are done, you can't overdrive it that way. So while some folks
shy away from transverters because they might think they are too complicated,
the performance you get from an Elecraft transverter and a K3 FAR outperforms
ANY multimode-multiband rig regardless of manufacturer.

[Elecraft] Question about KX3

2012-09-11 Thread w8zn
Hi all,

I'm thinking about a KX3 for a portable VHF I.F. rig. Where can I find an
explanation of the Auxbus protocol so I can build a band decoder for all the
transverter bands since the KRC2 only does 3?

Thanks!!!

Re: [Elecraft] Feature request - CW PTT

2010-12-28 Thread w8zn
I understand the explaination as the PTT acting illogical. And yes, no other
rigs act like this. I believe this is a carry over from several years ago when
an update was made that fixed an issue that even in PTT mode, if the key was
hit it would actually transmit. Now at least it doesn't transmit but yes, the
KEY OUT does close and it shouldn't; in PTT mode, it should just look at you
until you press the PTT.

Maybe this discussion will jog Wayne's memory and he can have another look at
it to see if it can be corrected.

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV receive gain

2010-11-11 Thread w8zn
I've done extensive testing and Eric confirmed that the gain is fixed, only the
s-meter reading is adjustable via firmware. I tested a K3/K144XV on 3.97 and
again at 4.14 and the sensitivty is the same (quite good I might add), only
the s-meter reading has changed.

[Elecraft] K3 Feature request

2010-11-10 Thread w8zn
Now that the K144XV is available and a lot of us are planning to use it to
drive microwave transverters, it would be really nice if there was some way to
easily adjust IF gain. I know there was a gain change after 3.97 so it appears
this is available in the firmware. Is there a way that along with RF freq, IF
freq and offset offered in the XV config that there could be a gain per band
setting added? When you add a transverters, most times the transverter has a
fair amount of conversion gain and having the S-meter sit at S5 with noise
doesn't help dynamic range. For eme'ers, we typically have lots of gain in
preamps that drives the S-meter up. Using the ATT works but it's either in or
out, nothing in between.

Just a thought.

[Elecraft] K144XV receive gain

2010-11-09 Thread w8zn
After seeing several postings about the K144xv gain and experiencing issues
myself, I did some testing.

Comparing a K3/K144XV on 2m vs 6m.

On version 3.97 firmware, on 6m -87dbm yielded a S9 signal with the PR6 preamp
in but the internal preamp off - best setting.
On 2m, this yielded a S9+5 signal with the internal preamp still off.

After loading 4.12 or higher, the same -87dbm gave the same S9 on 6m but now
only S5 on 2m and still only S7 with the internal preamp on. To achieve the
same S9 reading, I had to increase the signal level to -72dbm with the internal
preamp off. The release notes for 4.12 reference a gain change on the K144xv
and by the results of the 3.97 test I agree, there was too much gain but
instead of dropping 6 db or so, it appears that they dropped 15db. Hopefully
this will be rectified in the near future.

[Elecraft] [K3] Separate PTT outputs for HF, 6m and Transverters

2010-02-19 Thread w8zn

Hi all,

I have built a number of interface boards for my K3's that some of you may be
interested in. Since a K3 only has one PTT output, I have built an interface
board that takes the LP Keyout, DIGOUT0 and DIGOUT1 and generates a separate
PTT output for HF, 6m and non-Elecraft transverters that use the low power
outputs from the KXV3. It also provided a switched 12v to control the 6m preamp
since DIGOUT1 is used on this board. The board contains 6 RCA jacks, one is 12v
in from the 12v jack on the K3 rear panel and another RCA is provided with 12v
out. There is a switched 12v jack that is activated on 6m for the remote preamp
and then the 3 PTT output for HF, 6m and VHF transverters.

This is not in competition with the KRC2 which does band decode and lots of
other cool stuff, this is a quick and easy way to control amps and
transverters. It is NOT for folks running QSK as the relays are typically 35ms
switching. I will have some pictures up on the K8GP website tonight. I have
about $30 in parts and will provide the units assembled and tested. You will
have to provide a interface cable with a DB15HD for the ACC connector on your
K3, the other end of this cable connects to this board via a push on connector
(supplied) and a suitable enclosure.

If you are interested or have questions, please reply off list directly yo me.

[Elecraft] k144xv question

2009-12-22 Thread w8zn
Hi all,

I've read through the new manual, but I don't see any reference to any type of
control cable from the K3 to the transverter for PTT or LO selection. Anyone
know if these signals are sent on the IF coax leads or did I miss something? I
don't see a schematic for the KXV3A or the K144XV anywhere which would also
answer the question.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Difficulty with K3 Utility RS232 Interface

2009-06-26 Thread w8zn

I own two K3's and maintain 6 others for our contest group. I've never had even
a hint of an issue with the RS232 interface loading/saving configs or firmware.

I might add to all K3 owners as I've learned after many years of working with
networking gear. Load new firmware when it is available, even if you think you
don't need the new features. Even though companies much bigger than Elecraft
(Like Cisco) try their best to maintain backward compatability, it doesn't
always work. Even if you bypass the beta's (which are more stable than most
releases from other guys), the Elecraft utility is so easy to maintain full
releases it just doesn't make sense not to do it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Ground Loop Issues using Ameritron ARB-704

2009-06-04 Thread w8zn
Haven't followed this too close until I saw Ameritron. W3ZZ had almost the
exact issue very early after receiving his K3 when they first were released.
For him the issue only showed hum on 160m but the problem turned out to be the
QSK mod factory installed on his amp caused there to be a DC voltage on the RF
coax between the K3 and the amp. Since there is no DC blocking cap between the
antenna jack and the SWR bridge in the K3 (or at least then there wasn't) this
caused the DC voltage to be grounded and caused the hum. I added a .01 HV
ceramic disc right at the input jack of the amp.

Disconnect the amp completely from the K3. Measure the DC voltage from the
center conductor of the coax coming from the amp to ground and key the amp. If
there is any DC voltage there, you need to add a blocking cap.

YMMV - This is only what I found and it worked for him.

When switching my K3 from RX to TX 100W FM, I measured these voltage drops:

0.03V directly at the Astron RS-35M's output

0.25V at an unused output of a WMR RIGrunner, connected to the RS-35M by a

2ft cable

1.00V as indicated by the K3, connected to the RIGrunner by a 4ft cable

By cable I mean the type supplied with the K3.

Certainly not as good as the 400mV reported by Guy K2AV.

Still better than the 1.7V reported by Harris K9RJ.

Corresponds to the 700mV reported by Joe W4TV (direct connection, no

RIGrunner)

Guess the major problem resulting from voltage drop is a reduced efficiency

of the KPA3.

[Elecraft] Saving splits to memory

OK, I spent an hour last night trying to figure this out. Have the latest
firmware and wanted to take advantage of the new transverter IF range to

What am I missing??

Re: [Elecraft] How to record Audio on K3

2009-03-31 Thread w8zn
Mike,

Make sure the line out from the K3 is plugged into the line input of your sound
card. On most computers, red is the mic input, green is line output and blue is
line input. Or if they have stencils by them, the one with and ear and arrow
pointing in.

Click on programs, then accessories, then entertainment and select volume
control.

In volume control, click options in the upper left, then select properties. In
the section labeled adjust volume for select record. Below is the section
Show the following volumes controls, make sure line input is checked and
click OK.

The next window that pops up will be the recoding sliders, make sure line input
has the select box checked and set the slider half way up.

Now you can run sound recorder located back in programs, accessories,
entertainment and the recoding will be of the line input.

Hope this helps,

I believe the way ALC works in the rig, unless you tell it you want more, it
wouldn't do it even if you increased the capability. And it is the software
that tells it how much to put out, so unless you change the software so it will
go above 120w it won't. Unlike, say a TS850 where you just turn the ALC pot up
on the inside. Higher voltage may lower the IMD but at what cost? What does it
do to the MTBF of all the components that are rated say at 16v.

I would like to hear Wayne's thoughts as a designer on this.

Re: [Elecraft] Tweak for phone?

2009-03-09 Thread w8zn
Thanks to everyone for insignt on this, has anyone found a better AGC setup for
phone? Being a long time VHFer I decided to be seious in a HF phone contest for
the first time in 30 years. I've used my K3 for three cw contests and even
though I'm a poor cw op, the K3 made coping so easy I figured a phone contest
was next.

For some crazy reason, I thought I would try 20m single band. Ok, all you HFers
can stop laughing and get off the floor now, what a zoo!! Is it a pre-requeset
that everyone drink 5 cans of Jolt before starting? I had issues with stations
either 2 khz below or 1.8 khz above really chewing me up. I tried playing with
the bandwidth and shift but I need to play more with it and the lo and hi cuts.
You really get spoiled with the way you can copy S0 stations on cw between two
big cw signals.

The K3 really handled the strong signals beyond my imagination, no fur-burgers
or other interference that I see in other rigs. Even though the old TS-850's
are really good rigs, someone 10 khz away that is 20 over S9 would create
issues, not on the K3.

I'm waiting for the new firmware release with CONFG:NOQRM - Wayne, please add
this to the top of the list!!

I doubt you use actual RTV but a RTV-like sealant. RTV contains acetic

acid and will eat/corrode electronics and is a no-no for mil hardware.

In mil spec hardware I doubt you are winding your own toroids. While

it was common practice to do your own air wound coil knifing, the CMMI

Would compression really sound OK on FM?? Having the compressor on using a

Compression, though it works with AM in this version of the firmware, still

The K3 currently does all transmit compression operations at IF.  To add
speech compression to FM would require routines at AF.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft 70cm transverter, K3 and repeater access tones?

2009-02-17 Thread w8zn

While I don't have a 432 Elecraft transverter, I have had a lot of experience
with DEM transverters and K3's over the last year. If you change the crystal in
the transverter to use 26 MHz for 432 then 30 MHz would be 436 and this works
well with a couple of caveates. The bandpass filters start to cut off pretty
sharply around 27 MHz and you will find the rx is down about 6 db, mostly not a
problem since most transverters have ample gain. On the transmit side, I have
found  the output is reduced to about -6 dbm and isn't as adjustable as it is
at 28 MHz, probably ALC action with reduced output from the bandpass filters. I
have used it and it works well, you just have to play with the levels and as
you go up in frequency, you have to watch that you don't overdrive the
transverter. DEM offers a crystal that allows their transverter to cover 435
with a 28 MHz IF, this equates to a 25 MHZ IF for 432 and the 12m bandpass
should work well for this but once again, as you go up, the bandpass will be
dropping until you reach around 27 MHz.

I have considered re-tuning the 10m filters down to give flatter response at
26MHz giving away 28.8 and up which I never use anyway but haven't decided
which way to go. Since the FM band in the US is 440 to 450, it's a waste since
nothing you do is ever going to give you 20 MHz of bandwidth. I just keep a
70cm FM transceiver around and just use the K3 for weak signal work around 432.

Hope this helps.

There are switched bandpass filters prior to the 10w PA stage, which are
also in circuit before the transverter output. I expect that the 28 to 30MHz
filter would not be suitable right up to 32MHz.

So I guess an extension of transmit capability to 32MHz would not be on the

Could not the K3 be transmit-enabled up to 32MHz? Are the bandpass filters
too narrow to permit this? It seems like potentially a very easy solution.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 external qro keying line

2009-02-12 Thread w8zn

I've seen numerous posts about the PTT output line on the K3 and using older
amps. Yaesu's, Kenwood's, Icom's all share the same issue.

Unless you are running QSK and need instant keying, I would suggest adding a
small 12v relay inside the K3 that the solid state device keys and presents the
user with a set of dry, isolated contacts that can handle positive, negative
and up to 250v DC or AC. I have added this to several K3's to protect the
switching transistor from eventual destruction. Once again, if you are using
QSK, solid state due to it's fast switching time is your only option.

Yes, it means touching your K3 with a hot soldering iron, but it's a pay me
now or pay me later thing, sooner or later it will blow the switch if you are
hooking up older or HB amps that use other than low current positive keying
voltages.

[Elecraft] K3 transverter output question

2009-02-02 Thread w8zn

Not sure if this is a question or observation. Saturday I was setting up a DEM
transverter to be used with a K3 and found the low level output of the K3 is
dependant upon the input attenuator setting on the DEM transverter. I set the
max output on the K3 in the menu to 1.8 dbm , which the rig displayed. When the
DEM was adjusted for max attenuation, the K3 showed 1.8 dbm but when I turned
the attenuation pot on the DEM transverter to decrease the attenuation and get
more output, the output of the K3 dropped to .7 dbm as noted on the K3 readout.
A assume this is because the 10m input of the DEM is not 50 ohms but it just
surprised me after dealing with many other rigs. I guess even the low level
output is ALC controlled which would probably explain it.

Re: [Elecraft] Silly question - what is KEY OUT?

2009-01-22 Thread w8zn
This isn't a bug, it's the way it was implemented. Originally, whenever in cw,
hitting the key would cause the rig to transmit, either in VOX or PTT mode. A
change was made so that the rig would not transmit unless it was in VOX or the
PTT was engaged. In PTT mode, the rig still keys but doesn't output any RF;
different from the way most all other rigs behave but it works. Hopefully, once
Wayne gets peoples' Duckies included, they go back and set it so unless in VOX
mode the rig doesn't even key when the paddles are closed.

Terry

 -- Original message --
From: Merv Schweigert k...@flex.com

The Key Out relay is only energized during transmission. This is what you
would want for an amplifier. So for example if you turn your VOX off and
press your key or paddle, the Key Out relay will not energize. If you turn
your VOX on it will energize but you will also be transmitting. If you are
in normal VOX control, the Key Out relay will stay energized longer than
your key press based on your VOX delay setting. So it won't follow your
  dits
and dahs. I suppose if you turn QSK on, the Key Out will follow the dits
  and
dahs of your key presses or the internal keyer.

May be a bug in my K3 2306, but if you hit the paddle the
key out does key the amp with the VOX turned off.

Thanks John,

That was it. Both rigs use the same config file so it makes sense that they
both acted the same way. I guess the equalization happens before the bandwidth
instead of after. So now the question is, should the DSP be smart enough to
know when it's equalization has be changed and you ask it to go to 100 or 50Hz,
should it display some kind of warning message like, Hey stupid, I can't do
that or maybe RTFM

bandpass filters on the receive lines if I am using receive antennas
  on the
  Receive Antenna and/or Aux input?
And also use transmit bandpass filters on the transmit antenna input
  when I
am using the transmit antenna for both receive and transmit?

 Hi Tony,

Every multi-transmitter installation is different. In general, TX and
 RX antennas should be well-isolated.

If you hear the COR (carrier operated relay) on any K3 activate --
either the one on its RX ANT jack or the sub receiver's AUX input --
you should try to improve isolation. You'll know it when you hear it,
because T-R normally involves only PIN diodes on a K3. There will be
extreme cases where a band-pass filter or external shorting may be
 required, depending on the situation.

There are many multi-K3 installations, some permanent, some for
DXpeditions. We've had many reports about the ability of the K3 to
function well in such cases -- often much better than older rigs. I'm
sure you can get further help in specific situations from some of those
 monitoring this list.

I'm not the right guy to ask, at least at present. My entire massive HF
antenna farm is a 50' random wire, 20' up, fed with 300-ohm twin lead.
I have to sign some sort of XYL-related legal papers or buy more
acreage if I want to expand :)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Monitor

2008-12-11 Thread W8ZN
Ed raises a good question, with the built in isolation transformers in the K3,
computer audio into the Line in now sounds great. With the mic+line enabled to
allow the computer to call CQ's and a live mic connected to either the FPL or
RPL, is there a way to mute the live mic while audio comes in the LINE in? Or
does the noise gate only affect the mic amp stages?

I guess the only way to do this would be if the rig is keyed via RTS or DTR,
only the line in is active, but if keyed via vox or PTT, the mic is active???

Thanks,

 Lyle,
Thanks for the info! It sounds absolutely correct as the DVR that I am
inputting on line in from my computer sounds a lot better in the
monitor. I did find out when using line in that the mic is still HOT
which makes sense. This leads to the question??? With the KDVR3 when
sending over the air is the mic muted? I don't have a KDVR3 yet but am
planning on getting it for at least one of my K3's.

With MON, you hear the slightly delayed audio from the monitor as well
as your own voice. This may be perceived by some as a slight echo.

The delay is due to how DSP works.

Tx audio is processed by the DSP (leveled, filtered and equalized),
converted to a nominal 15 kHz IF, clipped (if compression is on) and
then sampled, downconverted to audio, filtered again, and passed to the
speaker or headphones (or, now, LINE OUT :-)

There is some delay associated with all of this processing. This is
most likely what you are hearing as a slight echo effect.

If you record MON and then play it back while you are not speaking,
  you'll hear no echo.

If you have the KDVR3 installed, listen to a voice message. No echo.

[Elecraft] RX audio in both ears for sub receiver

2008-12-10 Thread W8ZN
If the K3 has the capability, the best would be to supply both ears both main
and sub receiver audio but add a slight delay to the left ear for the sub
receiver and and a slight delay to the right ear for the main receiver. This
will give the good old stereo effect that the main receiver is on the left and
the sub receiver is on the right. I've done this for many years using two
radios and audio delay boards meant for repeaters. Since the rig has adjustable
AFX already, my guess is it would only take Wayne's magic fingers on the
keyboard to add thisalong with the 90 million other things that
everyone asks for!

[Elecraft] DVR from software

2008-12-10 Thread W8ZN
In response to the person that just posted about DVR functions from a computer
program -

From page 14 of the K3 programmers reference manual.

SWT/SWH * (Switch Emulation; SET only) K3 Extended SET format (K31): SWTnn;
(TAP functions) or SWHnn; (HOLD functions). nn is determined from Table 4.
Table 4 says nn of 21 will do the same as taping M1 on the front panel so I
believe this should work.

If you logging program doesn't support this command, you can assign a funtion
key to a macro from the OS to generate this command and pass it to the K3.
