[Elecraft] K4D external transverter question
I assume I can listen on one band while transmitting on another with the K4D. Does this extend to using an external transverter? For example, AO-7 Mode A I would be listening on 10m while transmitting on 2m via the transverter port to an external transverter. 73 Bill AA7XT *Bill Hein* *Sound Business Strategies, LLC* *m 970-628-5120* *b...@soundbusiness.us * *The information contained in this transmission may contain privileged and confidential information, including patient information protected by federal and state privacy laws. Wayne, Back to the phase locked receivers in the K4D. Does the K4HD retain this feature? I am wondering if the Superhet circuitry would mess up the phase coherence? If so, is there a way to bypass the K4HD Superhet circuits when not (for example) operating in a HF contest M2 or MM? 73 Bill AA7xT *Bill Hein* *Sound Business Strategies, LLC* *m 970-628-5120* *b...@soundbusiness.us * *The information contained in this transmission may contain privileged and confidential information, including patient information protected by federal and state privacy laws. Re: [Elecraft] K4D questions - diversity, HDMI, Ref In
Hi, Wayne! I'm very happy about the phase sync between the two rxs, that will be a lot of fun! FYI - The Bodnar GPS unit outputs a programmable output including 10 MHz at various levels: Low-jitter GPS-locked precision frequency reference 450 Hz to 800 MHz output This device outputs two synchronised low-jitter reference clocks locked to GPS signal. Long term stability of output signal is defined by high accuracy of GPS Caesium references and theoretically approaches 1x10-12. Short term signal quality is defined by internal TCXO clock source providing high-quality, low phase noise clock signal with sub-picosecond RMS jitter. Digital PLL allows main output reference frequency to have almost any value between 450Hz and 800MHz. The second output frequency depends on the first output due to a common internal clock, if you need individual flexibility, multiple mini GPS units may be a better choice. If both outputs have the same frequency their relative phase shift can be adjusted. This can be used, for example, to generate two signals with 90° phase shift for use in I/Q mixer. Both output signals square wave at 3.3V CMOS levels with 50 Ohms characteristic impedance. Their output drive levels can be adjusted and outputs can be enabled and disabled independently. Output power level (measured at 10MHz, fundamental power channel): +13.3dBm, drive setting 32mA +12.7dBm, drive setting 24mA +11.4dBm, drive setting 16mA *Bill Hein* *Sound Business Strategies, LLC* *m 970-628-5120* *b...@soundbusiness.us * *The information contained in this transmission may contain privileged and confidential information, including patient information protected by federal and state privacy laws. [Elecraft] K4D questions - diversity, HDMI, Ref In
The K4D looks like an amazing radio! I am interested in diversity rx, primarily on 50 MHz. A few questions: (1) Are the two K4D receivers phase coherent (in sync)? (2) What is the resolution of the HDMI video output? (3) Will the Ref In work with something like the Bodnar GPS reference clock? http://www.leobodnar.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info_id=234 73 Bill AA7XT *Sound Business Strategies, LLC* *b...@soundbusiness.us * *The information contained in this transmission may contain privileged and confidential information, including patient information protected by federal and state privacy laws. [Elecraft] K3-Remote / RemoteRig system question
I am looking at the K3-Remote / RemoteRig system. A few questions: (1) I recall hearing something about a K3/0 with a smaller case. Was this just a prototype or is it headed for production? The current K3/0 case must be mostly empty. (2) How much work is it to switch the remote (base) K3 from remote to local operation? I see that RemoteRig connects to the K3 serial port. I currently have my K3 serial port connected to a P3 and then from the P3 serial port to a logging computer. Would these cables need to be swapped each time I want to change from local to remote operation? How about keying and mic lines? (3) How does one change the Config and Menu items on the remote K3 from local K0? Does the configuration 'sync' between the two rigs? 73 Bill William Hein, AA7XT ex-AA4XT, NT1Y, AA6TT, KC6EDP Blog AA7XT.com ARRL, CSVHF AMSAT Life Member UKSMG QCWA Member 1st licensed 1969 - WN6NDC 1st W to OH0 6m QSO 1st North America to Asia 60m QSO Founder TopBand email reflector Tel +1 (970) 628-5120 Email bill.aa...@gmail.com Loc: DM59pa AIM / iChat / iMessage william.h...@me.com Skype williamhein __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] using the PR6
I am slightly confused on the proper operation of the PR6. I installed the PR6 on my K3 according to the instructions: ** CTRL line used (supplied DB-15 connected to ACC port) ** PR6 jumper P2 removed ** CONFIG: DIGOUT1 ON set on 6m So, when I am operating on 6m do I select RX ANT and PRE or just RX ANT? If just RX ANT is the appropriate protocol what will be the effect will selecting both PRE and RX ANT? I've fuddled about with these buttons but would like to know the recommended procedure. 73 Bill William Hein, AA7XT ex-AA4XT, NT1Y, AA6TT, KC6EDP __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 key clicks
I am currently operating barefoot at my new-ish (moved here one year ago) QTH in Glade Park CO with a K3 and a Cushcraft vertical antenna. (Much nicer antennas going up in the next few weeks and more power once I get 220V to the shack). I have a neighbor, Jerry K0DU, who lives about 4 miles away and is an active contester. We can see each other's QTHs from our respective shacks across a high elevation Colorado plateau. Needless to say we have no trouble hearing each other. I have noticed that I can get within 2-kHz of Jerry when he's operating CW with at full 1.5-kW output with no clicks or elevated tx noise. I can see a giant signal on the P3 but can't hear a thing once I'm 2-kHz either side. This underscores how nice the K3 rx is. I have a full set of accessory CW roofing filters. After the 10m test recently Jerry emailed me ...(Jerry's guest op) came across you several times on CW... heard buckshot or key clicks out of the pass band of our receiver up down the band This suprised since I had noted during the contest how close I could operate to Jerry. And he was running his linear and I was operating barefoot. Jerry has a FTdx5000 so I don't think poor selectivity or bad rx design is the issue. I confirmed that Jerry's 5000 did not have the NB engaged during the 10m test. What can I do to check my K3 for transmitted key clicks and other unwanted emissions? How to do to eliminate same once I confirm the problem? Frankly, I Jerry's transmissions don't bother me reciprocity didcates than my transmissions shouldn't bother him especially with an order-of-magnitude different to transmitted power. The Cushcraft vertical (an R8) sometimes has high SWR spikes. Since its being decommissioned soon and I've been running low power I haven't bothered to trouble shoot it. Could this be contributing to the clicks/buckshot? I'll run some tests with Jerry after I have a plan of attack. 73 Bill - William Hein, AA7XT (ex-AA4XT, NT1Y, AA6TT, KC6EDP) AMSAT Life Member ARRL Life Member UKSMG Member 1st W to OH0 QSO on 6m 1st North America to Asia QSO on 60m Founder of TopBand email reflector Web www.AA7XT.com Tel +1 (970) 628-5120 Email bill.aa...@gmail.com Loc: DM59pa Web twitter.com/williamhein AIM / iChat / iMessage william.h...@me.com Skype williamhein about.me/williamhein# __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Duplex operation on K3
Is there a way to get the K3 to operate duplex (Tx on one band while rx on another)? For the K3 with second rx, of course. I would like to operate mode A satellite with AO-7 (tx on 2m and rx on 10m). I'd also monitor a second band while contesting with my K3 without the expense of buying a second K3 when the one I have already has two rxs. My antennas are well separated and I have extensive external band pass filtering for contest use. 73 Bill AA7XT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Mush and Manufacturers
One of the reasons I switched allegiance from Yaesu and Ten-Tec (I was a dedicated FT-1000D user for ten years and then an early and initially enthusiastic Orion and Orion II user but lost interest when it became obvious that both Yaesu and TT could care less about feedback from their users and what features they would like to have added to the rigs' software and hardware) to Elecraft was the participation of the company principals and staff in the user forums. I see that on fine display here today. It sounds like a real problem has surfaced and the collective brainpower of the K3 community (manufacturer and users) is drilling down to a solution. What other manufacturer would encourage users to break out their soldering irons and experimentally add capacitance to circuit? It dinged my ham budget to unload my Orions (4 Orion IIs) in order to switch to K3 but I'm happy I did (will be adding a second K3 to my station for SO2R shortly). The K3 will be constantly improved (anyone checked out the new master-slave capability? WOW I was bugging TT to add this to the Orion II 7 years ago to no avail) while the Orion's software/hardware remains static and Yaesu succeeds mostly in adding knobs and weight to their rigs (admittedly the FT-5000 is better than the train wreck FT-9000). Regarding the Mush discussion, I like the idea of decoupling hardware RF Gain and DSP Gain. This could be a interesting feature beyond controlling weak signal pileup jumbles. I learned with the Orion that one has to watch signal level into the DSP circuitry carefully. 73 Bill - William Hein, AA7XT (ex-AA4XT, NT1Y, AA6TT, KC6EDP) AMSAT Life Member ARRL Life Member UKSMG Member Tel +1 (970) 628-5120 Email bill.aa...@gmail.com Loc: DM59 Web AA7XT.com Web twitter.com/williamhein AIM / iChat / iMessage william.h...@me.com Skype williamhein find me on Facebook Four Square __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Rx Phase Noise: superior charactistics at 14-MHz vs. 28-MHz?
I recently ordered a high-performance Kuhne TR 144 H +40 2m transverter for use with my K3 in an EME station I am building at my new Glade Park CO QTH. Kuhne recommended that I run their transverter at 14-MHz in lieu of 28-MHz due to superior K3 rx phase noise at the lower frequency. True? Here is what Kuhne said in an email received today: The Elekraft K3 is compatible to our transverter TR 144 H +40If you will use the TR 144 H +40 most of the time with the K3 we are recommending to order the TR 144 H +40 with 14 MHz IF. The phase noise of the K3 is at 14 MHz about 8 dB better than the phase noise at 28 MHz. If this is indeed true I wonder how the K3 phase noise at 50-MHz stacks up and whether there would be a benefit to use an external 50-to-14-MHz transverter with the K3 in particular for 6m weak signal and EME work (I am also building a 6m EME station here in CO). (Even though my K3 has the internal 2m transverter option I am purchasing the Kuhne unit to achieve maximum performance on 2m weak signals in particular signals off the moon. The internal 2m unit will be handy as an IF for microwave transverters when I get around to 13cm and up.) Of possible interest to VHF-UHFers using K3s as their IF Kuhne makes a lovely transverter switch box - TR 6 SW - which interfaces cleanly with the K3 and even comes with a prewired cable/connector allowing the K3 band-switch to select multiple transverters - Kuhne models or other brands. This is rather elegant - 1 rig/1 band-switch selecting 160m thru 23cm and higher depending on your xvtrs! Thank you Elecraft for making the K3 so transverter friendly. http://www.kuhne-electronic.de/en/products/transverter/tr-6-sw.html 73 Bill - William Hein, AA7XT (ex-AA4XT, NT1Y, AA6TT, KC6EDP) AMSAT Life Member ARRL Life Member UKSMG Member Tel +1 (970) 628-5120 Email bill.aa...@gmail.com Loc: EM65PS Web AA7XT.com Web twitter.com/williamhein AIM / iChat / iMessage william.h...@me.com Skype williamhein find me on Facebook Four Square __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] How does the K3 perform on MW BCB?
I am in the midst of a major shack gear purge (search my on eHam for the current list, putting a few items up every weekend). I operated M/M stations in the past and now live in a 'normal' size house (which is increasingly cluttered with kids' toys) and want to get to down a manageable equipment equilibrium - therefore lots of gear to sell off. I have a number of specialized SWL rxs that I am thinking of selling provided my K3 is a solid performer on the MW BCB (530 - 1710 kHz), a band which I enjoy DXing (I started as a AM band DXer in the late '60s). I don't have at the moment a suitable low band rx antenna to put the K3 thru its paces ondown here so I'd like to hear from anyone who has used their K3 for critical MW listening and learn how it stacked up compared to specialzed SWL / communications rxs. Note I have the KXV3 and KBPF3 modules installed in my K3. Reading the K3 FAQ leads me to think that I'll want to use the XVTR IN jack for a MW rx antenna, true? Or will just the normal RX ANT IN jack do? Shame the K3 doesn't receive LW. 73, Bill AA4XT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 as a mobile rig?
Anyone using a K3 in their car? If so, please comment on pros and cons of the K3 vs. other rigs in a mobile context. Does anyone make a K3 mobile bracket? 73, Bill - William Hein, AA4XT mobile: +1 (615) 967-1226 email: bill.aa...@gmail.com Loc: EM65PS Web: AA4XT.com 6752 Owen Hill Road College Grove TN 37046-9122 USA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
