[Elecraft] K3 S-Meter Calibration

2008-05-04 Thread William Shappley
In case anyone wants to compare, I just calibrated my K3's S-meter
with an in-cal HP 8640B.The new firmware (Version 1.87/1.69)
includes the magic
S-meter that reads the same no matter what (pre-amp, attenuator,
etc.) and since the firmware documentation said recalibration is
required, I decide to give it a whirl.

I calibrated at 14.100 MHz, and used the following levels:

S9 = 50 microvolts
S5 = 3.2 microvolts

The results: SMTR SC = 16 (default is 14), SMTR OF = 20 (default is
24).

The new absolute mode is amazing. After calibration, I can put in 50
microvolts and get S9 and 3.2 microvolts and get S5 in ATT, PRE or
normal.

By the way, the power control IS much more stable in digital modes
(RTTY in DATA A), and the average power on speech (using an LP-100
vector wattmeter) is noticeably

higher.

Cool.

Bill

[Elecraft] K3 Line-In for PSK31 not working

2008-01-15 Thread William Shappley

Alan -

I have used PSK31, MFSK16 and RTTY using Hamscope with no problems.
However,
the rear panel LINE IN (mono) and LINE OUT (stereo) jacks are 3.5mm,
NOT the
old trusty 1/8 inch (they are slightly larger). I initially used
some 1/8" plugs I had, and they worked, but were
loose and prone to poor connection. I ordered 3.5mm plugs from
Mouser and they fit FB.

I was going to use VOX instead of a physical PTT, but that doesn't
work

well. I've adjusted gains but it insists on cycling on & off. Thought
anti-VOX would fix, but it doesn't.

Please check your cable and verify it is firmly seated into the K3 LINE
IN connector. I routinely use LINE IN with VOX in DATA A mode to
operate PSK31 on my K3 with no problems.

[Elecraft] DSP for KX1 and K1

2008-01-11 Thread William Shappley
The nature of the KX1 (and the K1, hope to build one of those soon)
would argue for a very low power,
simple DSP. Since they are CW only rigs, Autonotch doesn't make
sense to me (wouldn't it attack
the CW note you are trying to hear?). Also, the KX1 built in crystal
variable filter works FB for me. So,
I think my preference would be a denoiser only - I'm sure you could
fit that in the K1, maybe in a KX1.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Net Report for January 6th and 7th - Minor correction

2008-01-07 Thread William Shappley

Kevin -

Just a note to congratulate you on being able to hear me on the 7045
KHz net yesterday evening.

The band was way down here in TN and the QSB was rapid and deep.

The minor correction is that I was on K3 serial # 175 for the net -
my K2 (# 5540) was asleep and
resting. As usual, 100 watts into my horizontal loop wire antenna.
If it were not for the K3 DSP

noise reduction I don't think I would have heard anything!

Yes, good things come to those who wait - the K3 arrived in kit form
on Dec 20th.

[Elecraft] K3 Receive 500 - 700 KHz

2007-12-31 Thread William Shappley

Yep, just did it tonight on K3 serial number 175 - works great!
Listened to WSM (650 KHz, showing S9 + 40 but I'm close) and some
others.
Mostly you hear AM broadcast radio stations, of course. I also tuned
around the 2-3 MHz areas and found the nearby shortwave station

(WWRB) and the 6 MHz range, it all works.

I do have the KBPF3 installed and the 6 KHz AM filter. AM mode, or
course (firmware version 1.55 downloaded).

The alternate AM mode (AM synchronous) is not in the firmware yet,
apparently.

A later post from Dave informed us he did have the KBPF3 general
coverage filter module installed.

This concerns me. There is an AM station on 630khz about 100 miles
west of me in NC that I like to listen to during the daytime on my
Yaesu FT-920. The problem with the Yaesu is that I get blow-by from a
600khz station that is located about 10 miles from me. I was hoping
my upcoming K3 would eliminate this problem for me. I sometimes
listen to WSM 650khz, Nashville, TN, in the evenings, but the Yaesu
does ok for that station.

I am not ordering a K3 just for AM broadcast band reception, but it
sure would be nice if I could hear the lower end of the broadcast
band with some rejection from stations close by to me.

Would some of you current K3 owners please check and see if you can
hear anything between 500-700 khz. Also, do you have the KBPF3
installed and use the AM filter?

Many thanks and Happy New Year!

[Elecraft] TXG Message

2007-12-30 Thread William Shappley

Regarding the TXG message: I just finished the assembly and
alignment of K3 SN 000175. During the low power transmitter gain
calibration, I got the same message. It happened to me in the 60M
band. Apparently, after doing the synthesizer cal, the VFO stops
on some frequencies unsuitable for transmit. You would get an END
message normally if out of band,
but for some reason on 60M I got the TXG. After setting the VFO to a
legal 60M frequency, it worked fine. So, it may
just be that you are not on a legal 30M frequency. Set it to 10.125
and try again.

[Elecraft] Dayton experience

2007-05-21 Thread William Shappley
Just got home a few hours ago. Let me add to the comments of the
others regarding the K3 and Elecraft at Dayton:

1 - The K3, in terms of looks and quality, is a world beater. The
way the controls feel, including the pushbutton functions
incorporated into some of the
knobs, is first rate. Also, the response of the displays to
control inputs is very quick and smooth, I put my deposit in before
Dayton,
and I should be in the July / August delivery bunch. I'll be
patient - it will be worth the wait.

2 - I was a booth volunteer and I wanted to thank Heather (sorry,
didn't get a last name) for being so friendly and making me feel at
home.

3 - I met Lyle, KK7P, the DSP designer and firmware guy - very
impressive. In fact, I bought a KDSP2, which uses Lyle's DSP design,

for my K2 while I was there.

4 - I got to meet in person both Tom, N0SS and Don, W3FPR. Both are
very nice and a lot of fun to talk to. I reminded Tom that I had worked
him during the Halloween event from Frankenstein, Missouri
(loved the QSL card). And, it was a real treat to talk to Don about
K2 and KPA100

 things in general.

All in all, a very enjoyable Dayton. I'll be anxiously looking for
that notice from Elecraft that the K3 for me is on the way!

[Elecraft] W1 Enclosure by W8FGU

2007-05-05 Thread William Shappley
For those of you looking for an enclosure for your W1 wattmeter, let
me recommend the units made by Dave Van Wallaghen, W8FGU.
I received my enclosure earlier this week, and installed my W1 into
it today. Everything fits perfectly, and it really completes the W1 and
converts it from a workbench only instrument into a nice portable
wattmeter for use in the field. Dave's workmanship is first class,
especially considering that he is building these basically by hand!
And, the clear lexan shows off your workmanship instead of

hiding it in an opaque box.

Dave's website is at:

http://w8fgu.home.comcast.net/w1encl.html

I appreciate Dave's effort to create what I think is a needed
addition for the W1, and say thanks to him for creating a unit that
I can take with me and my KX1 when traveling. Next stop for my KX1
and W1 - Dayton!

[Elecraft] Case for W1 Wattmeter

2007-03-06 Thread William Shappley
I know several folks have asked for ideas about cases for the "naked"
W1 wattmeter. I recently acquired a Pelican 1040 MicroCase
(they are sold new on Ebay) and it works great to protect the
wattmeter during transport, etc. I mounted the BNC jacks on
the bottom of the board (and used elevated rear "feet" to keep the
unit level in use) and ordered the Pelican "Pick and Pluck"
foam insert along with the case - with proper picking and plucking,
hi hi you can fit the wattmeter right down into the Pelican case.
When closed,
the case cover applies a little pressure on the battery, but that
just serves to press the W1 down into the foam and keep it from

moving around.

Bill

[Elecraft] Unstable power control on 40M SSB

2007-02-01 Thread William Shappley

Folks -

I just completed the KPA-100 amp for K2 #5540 and everything is great
except for one problem. My memory tells me that I have seen
something on this before

on the reflector but I cannot remember the solution.

Anyway, I am seeing unstable power control on 40M SSB. 40M CW seems
fine (although the power control "hunts" a little more than it does
on the other bands). The power output on my peak reading Bird
will exceed 150W on voice peaks - on the other bands, the peak is at
or below the power control setting. Input current hits about 20 amps
(normally it is pulling about 15 amps, except
it pulls about 18 amps on 17 meters CW or SSB - but power control is
stable there). I tried SSB into the dummy load on 30M since it is
the same LPF, but power control is FB there.

By backing the power control down below 60 watts, the peaks can be
reduced, but it is still hitting 40% or more over the setting -
again, ONLY on 40M SSB.

There are no high current or any other errors showing up. My KPA-100
came with the resistor mod, and it is installed. I have already
performed the R98 mod on
the base K2 which did help stabilize the power "wiggles" on 40M CW,
but did nothing to tame SSB. All of this is into a verified good
dummy load. I have seen the same

high peak power that the Bird is showing on my LP-100 meter also.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks,
Bill

[Elecraft] Raspy Audio from K2

2006-12-14 Thread William Shappley

John -

I saw your message on the ECraft reflector. I have tried exactly the
same thing in my shack, and I always will hear a raspy audio sound,
even from perfectly functioning rigs that get FB on air reports. I
have never had time to track
down exactly what is happening, but don't get wrapped around the axle
too much. I suspect it has something to do with a combination of the
extreme sensitivity of a ham rig, and the dummy load consuming the
actual modulated
output of the rig under test, leaving mostly "leakage" products and
funny IM from things that only travel a few feet for the listening
rig to hear.

Try it on the air before you get too deep into troubleshooting.

I recently finished building the KSB2 and did the alignment on the
filters. Everything seems to be working as advertised, except on
transmit my voice sounds raspy. I haven't had time to dig into the
problem yet, but I did try 3 separate mics and got the same result. For
my test, I transmitted at 1 Watt into a dummy load while listening on my
Icom 706 with headphones. My first assumption is that I simply need to
tweak the transmit filter, but I'm asking if anyone else has had the
same symptom that was perhaps caused by something else. For example, is
it possible the two radios are simply too close to each other for a good
audio test? They are on separate supplies and were about 6 feet apart
during the test.

Thanks and 73's,

[Elecraft] Changes for KPA-100 Rev. D and the Toroid Guy

2006-10-22 Thread William Shappley
I just happened to have received a Rev. D KPA-100 a few days ago (I
have not started on it yet). There are new loose schematics in the
front of the Rev D manual with instructions to use them instead of
the ones already bound in the Rev D manuals - the loose schematics
are labeled Rev H, 9/25/06. The schematics already included in the
Rev D manual have an earlier date than the loose schematics (Rev H,
8/28/06) but in a side by side comparison I cannot find any
difference between them! But by comparing the Rev. C schematic off
the Elecraft site with the new ones, I can find the differences:

The old L16 was on a Red T44-2 core, with 29 turns
The new L16 is on a blue T50-1 core, and has 37 turns

The old RFC1 was a pre-made large inductor - the new RFC1 is the same
as L16 (T50-1 core, 37 turns).

Incidentally, for the first time, I had the Toroid guy make my
inductors instead of winding them myself. He gave me very quick
service, with excellent communications, and by the way he threw in
the new RFC1 and L16 (he had already shipped the "standard" Rev C
set) at no extra charge. Highly recommended. He e-mailed me and
asked whether I had received a Rev D kit even before I had checked
myself, so he is really on the ball. And by the way, his toroids are
beautifully done. I thought I wound a pretty good toroid (well, they
all worked, anyway) but his are really works of art!

Hope this helps,

[Elecraft] K2 #5540

2006-10-02 Thread William Shappley
K2 #5540 is now alive! It was purchased at Dayton, and first came to
life about 2 weeks ago. It is a base K2 at the moment, but I have
the KSB module on the bench now, and probably will purchase the
KPA100 around Christmas. No assembly problems, everything checked
out the first time. Due to my work schedule I only have a few hours
here and there. That forced me to take my time and be careful, and
it paid off in a perfect assembly and checkout. Filters were aligned
using the Elecraft Ngen noise generator and Hamscope software
(spectrum plot). The crystal filtering is very impressive - I will
probably get the DSP board at some point but I could be very happy
with the Xtal filters alone.

This is probably the best CW rig I have ever owned - very smooth and
easy to use. My previous favorite was a Ten-Tec Triton IV, but the
little K2 has it beat hands down. All in all, a very fun kit
building experience. When I was a young man, I enjoyed building
Heathkit test equipment (a lot of which is still in use), so I am
grateful that someone still designs and sells kits.

Best regards to everyone.
