Re: [Elecraft] K3 and RemoteRig

2015-05-17 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Ancillary question... Has anybody figured out how to use, at the local end,
sound card digital modes? I want to run MixW or other sound card programs, and
have Olivia or MFSK on USB coming out at the controlled (remote) K3 end. Can
it be done? What is the cabling and interface required?

Re: [Elecraft] Best Heil Element for K3

2015-03-22 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Hi Dave,

I got the same headset, and it would not work with the remote setup using the
K3/0 mini to connect to a remote K3 with the RemoteRig system linking them.
There was way too little mike power to move the needle. I then bought the
Pro-Set that Elecraft sells, and it came with the little "iC" sticker
indicating the Icom version. I sent my Pro7 back for a swap of elements to the
iC electret, and everything worked fine. BTW, the Elecraft hand mike (MH2)
also worked fine, and one of the guys at Elecraft told me it had an electret
element.

That said, I am certain the same problem did not occur when using the mike with
the K3 itself. Plenty of gain with either version mike.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Mini When will you fix the firmware?

2015-02-16 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Mack, you can solve this by downgrading the firmware of the mini to the next
earlier version. You do this, as I recall, by connecting a USB cable to the
mini and running the K3 utility program. I did it a long time ago, and I don't
recall all the steps. Brandon at Elecraft talked me through it.

No, mine persists with mike unplugged. The only thing that kills it is

[Elecraft] K3/0 mini remoting problem

2014-10-03 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Hi guys:

Last year, I had wonderful success controlling my "big station" (K3,
KPA500,KAT500) on Maryland's Eastern Shore from our winter home in Key West.
When I took the setup down last May, I carefully documented every step required
to set things back up.

Well, I have just gone through that process, and I can't get it to work --- at
least not from within my own LAN and from another home LAN using a downstream
router.

I can turn on the K3 from the K3/0 mini, and I can hear the audio from the K3
but I cannot control the K3. Also, the freq. readout on the mini does not
correspond to the K3 and does not change with movement of the mini vfo dial.
The mini cannot turn off the K3. The mini also comes up with "TERM" showing,
which I don't remember from the last time I did this. (I can clear that by
holding down the "CONFIG" button for 3 seconds.).

I am pretty sure this has to do with the configuration of the control end
RemoteRig. I have had problems in the past getting things to work from within
my own home --- whether same LAN or a downstream LAN. Problem is, I don't want
to get to Key West and discover it doesn't work.

Can anyone suggest things for me to try?

Tnx. 73,

Brian W3BW

Re: [Elecraft] Rotor control

2013-12-24 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
At the moment, I am using logmein.com, a free program for remotely controlling
a pc I left running at the remote location (with a backup battery.) I log on
and use Green Heron software to control a Green Heron rotor box. It is slow
and clumsy.

Option 1, which inexplicably failed, was an ethernet-to-serial converter. There
are many varieties, they are very ideosyncratic. When it worked, it was great.
You set up a virtual serial port at your control location, and that becomes the
rotor port used in your software. The virtual serial port software is normally
provided by the converter manufacturer, and the converters don't seem to like
other virtual port software. USConverters.com is one place to start.

As I say, mine worked great until it didn't, and I don't know why it failed,
but I had a backup. I got a neighbor to go in and change the cable from the
rotor box to the one to my PC.

N3JT has had success with a converter, and he has written an article for the (I
think) January CQ on the subject.

Let me know what you learn in the process.

complicated and multiple structures. I learned a lot from having to daisy-chain
routers to get my wifi signals to cover a variety of places. We left New York
City for Key West in 2010. In NYC we had Time Warner cable internet, pretty
fast when the whole neighborhood wasn't home using it. The beauty of that was
the modem was separate from the primary (most upstream) router. I could buy
whatever router I wanted, and then run downstream routers, (some with little
500mw rf amps and bigger antennas) off of that one.

I had no problem getting good results throughout our 5 story Manhattan
"brownstone" by stringing wires up and down the outside of the building to
downstream routers on each floor. I used, with good result, Linksys, D-Link
and Netgear.

BTW, not totally OT, it would be great to hear what people have to say about
reliability and durability of all three ( or other ) brands. They are equally
easy to set up and use, all with nice webpage interfaces,

The AT&T DSL and the more advanced AT&T U-VERSE DSL use routers (2-Wire in the
first case, Motorola in the 2nd) that DO NOT separate the modem from the
router. I despair of trying to explain the problems this creates to an ATT
customer service rep in St. Paul or Bangladesh. There are a gazillion posts
on-line from people having problems with the Motorola NVG510. The only time I
seriously messed with the 2-wire, before I upgraded to U-Verse service, I lost
internet for the whole family for several days. I am tiptoeing around now to
avoid a re-run.

Several of the posts said they had solved the NVG510 problems by using that
device just as a "bridge" and then putting a regular (maybe Linksys) router
behind that to handle all the router functions. I assume "bridge" means
essentially a modem only. I'd love to know more about that, but I am terrified
to try much more messing with it.

I am familiar with port-forwarding, as you have to port-forward to set up the
radio-end RemoteRig for the remotely controlled K3. I also have a very robust
remotely controlled Web7 power switch that lets me turn things on and off up at
the "big station" in MD that I am remotely controlling. That also requires
port-forwarding.

I also leave a PC running in MD on an uninterruptible power supply, and I use
that to move my rotor and control the KAT500 if needs be. I have put that on a
static ip on the LAN.

The external static ip that I need here in Key West, for which I pay $5 per
month extra, is needed for a system of remotely viewable surveillance cameras.
Those were installed by our alarm company, and they wanted me to get the static
ip. My problems with the K3/0 started after that visit by the ATT technician.

So, unwilling to try the "bridge" approach for fear of really getting screwed
up, I tried plugging the RemoteRig Control unit into a downstream (
daisy-chained) router from the NVG510, and the problem went away. I am
throwing no parades until this fix proves to be lasting,

What was so bizarre in all this --- i should be able to take the K3/0 plus
RemoteRig control box (RRC) to a local Starbucks and get on the air using wifi.
I should not have to do more than change network addresses in the RRC. Why the
NVG510 isn't similarly blind to the device attaching to it seems illogical.
But, nevertheless, once the tech left, having set up 5 static external ip
addresses, the RRC and K3/0 would turn on the remote K3, I could hear it, tune
it, change modes, filters, key up, etc., but none of the changes made at the
radio end were reflected in the front panel of the K3/0. It just sat there
saying 21.000.00 CW.

Now, having plugged the RRC in one box downstream, it all works again. Further
mysteries remain, but I am going to pretend all is well.

Sorry for this long screed, but I am hoping it will:

A. Help someone else
or
B. Stimulate someone to offer a better fix.

73 to all. Happy Holidays to all.

No, I can ping the U-Verse router. I cannot ping my distant router, where my
remotely controlled station is, from within the U-Verse network. I can ping it
from outside the U-Verse network. Very weird.

[Elecraft] Fwd: K3/0 to K3 RemoteRig issue

2013-12-19 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
OK guys. Don't waste time on this. The problem is definitely the router.

I cannot successfully ping my remote router in Maryland (where the remote K3
is) from inside my network here in Key West. I CAN successfully ping it when I
am using Verizon with my iPad. I CAN ping anything else I try from inside the
network.

Something in the way the router setup is working is preventing some kinds of
data from flowing back to me. This was not the case before AT&T's technician
set up the static ip addresses.

The router is a Motorola NVG510 used by the ATT U-Verse system. On-line, I find
many forum threads dealing with idiosyncratic behavior of this particular
router. That is what zapped me. Now I have to work out a fix.

Tnx. Happy Holidays.

[Elecraft] K3/0 to K3/100 with RemoteRig: CW how? Digital how?

2013-12-12 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Hello all,

I have got my K3/0 here in Key West beautifully controlling my K3/100 + KPA500
+ KAT500 located at my big station in MD.

I cannot figure out how to get CW keying using N1MM or Writelog. Can someone
guide me through the hookup? I am able to read frequencies from the K3/0
using various logging programs. This I accomplish by hooking a serial cable or
USB to serial converter between the PC and COM1 on the front of the control-end
RemoteRig.

Same question for digital modes, whether FSK or AFSK. There I don't know where
to begin.

Thanks in advance for your help.

[Elecraft] K3/0 to K3 Remote stopped working

2013-11-15 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Hi all. I could use some advice. I have spent the last several months
building the complete K-Line for my MD summer QTH. I am now preparing to
operate via RemoteRig from a K3/0 located remotely. I was hoping for a test
run in Sweepstakes this weekend.

Everything was working fine, and starting yesterday, I cannot bring up the
remote K3 in MD. I just get a busy signal at the control end, at my current
location in NJ.

In the past, when this has happened, cycling my control end RemoteRig and/or
router has fixed it. Not helping now.

I have the ability to remotely cycle power to the radio end RemoteRig, the K3,
and the remote router. I can use Logmein to the radio end PC to start microbit
to examine and restart the radio end RemoteRig. That doesn't solve it, and all
parameters look normal.

I can remotely cycle power to the radio end router. Still no joy.

I have cameras located in front of the radio end (remote) gear in MD. The
green light on the radio-end RemoteRig glows solid green a few seconds after I
cycle it, so it is definitely talking to the router. The router is talking to
the internet because I can remotely control all these other functions ---
Logmein, power switch, cameras --- from a distance.

Nothing I do brings up the remote K3. I had the same problem yesterday, and
after a couple hours of trying all of the above, it suddenly came back to life
--- enabling me to work K9W.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Regards,

Brian W3BW

[Elecraft] K3/0 to K3 issues mostly solved

2013-08-14 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Brandon gave me about an hour on the phone, and we got all the settings just
right. I can now operate remotely using RemoteRig and the K3/0 to my K3/100.
It works --- with a couple of quirks.

Quirk 1--- if you use the Heil ProSet Elite iC (made specially for Icom,) the
jumper JMP1 in the control box has to be in. Other Heil mikes require jumper
out. I figured that out after Brandon got me going. I have another Heil
Proset that is not the special Icom version which I was using when Brandon was
talking me through the setup.I later inadvertently switched to the iC
version and nothing worked again, until I put the jumper back on.

Quirk 2 --- I keep finding that I lose comms between the "control" and the
remote "radio" box periodically. I can only get it back by rebooting routers.
THAT one worries me. 2 days in a row, when I went to bed, everything worked.
When I got up the next morning, turning on the K3/0 did not bring up the K3. I
couldn't get it working until I rebooted the remote and the local routers.

Perhaps this is a function of my LAN setup. I have a primary router where the
internet comes in, and a downstream router to extend the wifi to other parts of
the house. I am running the K3 from the primary router, and the K3/0 from the
downstream router to simulate true remote ops --- it is actually in my
daughter's upstairs bedroom. It works fine until it doesn't work, and I have
no idea why that happens. Obviously port forwarding is setup right or it
wouldn't work at all.

In any event, I thought the info on the Heil ProSet Elite "iC" version might
save somebody out there a lot of grief.

If anyone has suggestions on Quirk 2, I am all ears.

Re: [Elecraft] Cabling Basics please?

2013-07-02 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Thanks, Paul.

Actually, this is not quite what I need. Forget my comment on remoting. That
comes later. I want the recommended cabling for harmonious interconnection and
optimal control of:

K3/100
KRC2
KAT500
KPA500

Plus,

Functionality of the Navigator interface to control the interface between PC
and K3 and handle audio in/out for digital modes.

Can anyone describe that to me?

Much thanks. 73 de Brian W3BW

[Elecraft] Cabling Basics please?

2013-07-01 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Hi guys:

I have, over the past few weeks, built a K3, fairly fully loaded, a P3, KAT500,
KRC2ACC and a KPA500.

I now find myself a bit flummoxed as I try to cable them all together. I have
one of the special 15 pin cables, KPAK3AUX plus a Y-Cable, and I have ordered a
second.

Can anyone suggest the best way to cable things together for maximum control
among the various boxes. My ultimate goal is to get a K3/0 and remote control
the whole thing.

I also use a Navigator interface, so I need to accommodate that.

Sorry to be lazy, but I want to know what my options are and what this group
recommends.

BTW, every piece of gear is working fb, now I want max inter-operability.

Anyone know when the K3/0 will be out?

Re: [Elecraft] RP2 Orientation for KRC2

2013-06-21 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
There are no distinguishing marks or differences in pin cross-section.
However, my VOM shows that one end, which I have declared to be pin 1, measures
47K ohms to every other pin.

I probably should have been smart enough to work that out myself.

Thanks for your help!

[Elecraft] Helpful Tool for Reading Component Values

2013-06-16 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
I am just starting to assemble a KRC2. In doing the parts inventory, I found
my 70 year-old eyes really struggling to identify components. Magnifying
glasses, of which I have several, just weren't cutting it.

It hit me that perhaps my iPhone and/or iPad might have an app available to do
the job for me. I am sure there are others, but I bought "Magnifying Glass
with Light Pro" for about $2.00. It really worked. You can really read the
markings on small components.

In any event, I thought I would pass this along.

[Elecraft] Fwd: K3 S/N 7394 RF Out = 0 Problem

2013-05-26 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
OK, I have un-built the kit back to before the KPA3 was installed. It still
fails the 5 watt Transmitter Gain Calibration Procedure. I cannot detect any
RF out. Perhaps unbuilding the kit creates it's own set of problems, but this
test worked "on the way up." It also worked with the PA installed. It stopped
working when I installed the sub-receiver. That is now no longer installed.

Again, all suggestions welcome

Never mind. I get it. I had already assumed I'd be buying the RemoteRig pair
along with the K3/0. So if everybody agrees that:

K3/0 to RemoteRig to Internet
Internet to RemoteRig to K3/100

leads to complete remote control, including power down and power up, then I am
ready to buy as soon as the mini comes out.

I was planning to use my K3, currently being built, remotely. I note in
 the
operator's manual that you are advised not to interrupt power to the rig,
but to always use the power button to turn it on and off..

That kind of kills my plans for remotely powering up and down using an
 internet controlled switch.

 My question is:

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Question

2013-05-19 Thread bwru...@gmail.com
Now I am confused.I liked Doug's first reply. Is that not the case? Someone
else said the K3/0 will turn power off and on remotely at the slaved K3/100.
Now I am hearing no it won't. Is that right?

I am surprised if Elecraft designed things so that you can totally remote
control EXCEPT for power.

It is no trick to remotely control power to the DC supply, but the manual says
if you shut the rig down there, there might be loss of some memory items.

*Does the K3/0 handle power on/off for the K3?*
