[Elecraft] K4 Production Prognosis

2019-06-04 Thread dhhdeh
James-K8JHR (who I do not know but whose research on headsets and mics I
greatly appreciate reading) asked some detailed and pointed questions,
all reasonable IMO, in consideration of the offer to prospective K4
owners to advance significant funds for product development and in
return a place in a sales queue.  Wouldn't a bank's commercial lending
officer ask such questions if a business were seeking a commercial loan
from them? As a 50 year career banker, I can assure you that he/she
indeed would. In this situation you are the lender and giving an
interest free loan with no promise of anything other than a queue position.

I owned an K3 from its 2007/2008 beginnings until four years ago. When I
sold my K3 (for numerous reasons), I also left this list in part because
of the frequent snippy and defense comments that seemed to emerge
anytime anything difficult, critical or probing was posted here. I see
not much has changed.

Enjoy your K4's. Save your flames. I'm moving on ... again.

Cheers,

N1LQ-David

[Elecraft] Additional K4 Questions for Now

2019-05-31 Thread dhhdeh

Hi Wayne,

Thank you for responding to my questions of earlier today. I have
several more of a secondary nature to ask for now. Thanks for taking the
time.

-Will the shift/width and lo cut/hi cut functions be on the K4 similar
as with the K3, or does the nature of the direct sampling IF
architecture make that no longer available?

-I notice a CW APF circuit is installed. Is it a variable width and how
is that performed?

-Is the screen exclusively a touch screen or can screen functions also
be mouse controlled?

-Does the DVR permit recorded QSO playback over the air as with the K3?

-Any estimate as to when a user manual will become available to study?

All for now. Again my thanks.

[Elecraft] K4 VFO B Front Panel Positioning

2019-05-31 Thread dhhdeh
I was not able to be at Dayton this year so I'm my initial K4 questions
from pictures and videos seen online.

I'm wondering abut the positioning of the VFO B encoder in the K4.
Wouldn't it seem more logical to have it where the OFS encoder is
located than in the top right position where it is now? Seems to be a
bit awkward to me.

[Elecraft] K4 Band Stacking Registers

2019-05-31 Thread dhhdeh

I owned a K3 from February 2008 until mid-2015.

One of the its UI features that I could never warm up to was the lack of
dedicated band switching buttons and multiple band stacking registers.

Can someone please give some insight on how the band button below the K4
screen works and its capabilities?

Thanks and 73 de N1LQ-Dave

[Elecraft] K3 or K3S: Whadayathink?

2015-09-10 Thread dhhdeh

Hi All,

I’m the owner of a 7½ year old K3 fitted with a sub-receiver, DVR, TCXO option,
100W PA, Auto-tuner and probably too many IF filters (as I have belatedly
discovered).

I added the two new KSYN3A boards back in the spring which has produced an
excellent improvement to both receivers….then a few weeks after that Elecraft
announces the K3S….grr

My K3 has been updated with all the hardware mods. Its appearance is like new.
So far it has given me flawless service though not at all stressed (no
contesting, field days, SOTA, motocross mobile, lending to friends, pawn shops,
etc.)

Here’s my dilemma. Do I keep it and retrofit what I can as new K3S options
become available? Do I sell it outright (along with a lot of other stuff to
raise the $$) and buy a completely new, comparable K3S or do I buy a new
bare-bones K3S-10 and transplant the options I can from my older K3 to a new
K3S?

There’s a big $$ consideration in this decision. But first, I am interested in
opinions on any K3S performance improvements.

For those of you who have gone from a K3 to a K3S, I would be interested in
your observations and opinions of the following:

1. Does the new K3S DSP board significantly improve the audio coming out
external speakers?
2. Aside from new attenuator steps, what improvements do you notice
improvement with the revised main RF board? I’m really curious about this as
it’s the biggest piece of the K3 that cannot be updated.
3. Aside from a new ATU bypass relay, is there any different performance
with the KAT3A auto-tuner?
4. Aside from new PA devices, any noticeable changes/improvements to the
100w PA?
5. Is the only thing revised in the KRX3A sub-receiver the addition of the
new KSYN3A board?

The KIO3B, KXV3B and KBPF3A upgrades are of lesser importance to me in this
decision process because of my operating style.

BTW, I liked the old K3 bezel appearance better than the K3S especially after I
had my K3 bezel custom engraved by WB2ART (just razzing you Wayne).

I’d be interested in hearing about your experiences and/or opinions on the
above.

To keep the mail volume low, perhaps replying to me off list would be best.
n...@arrl.net I’ll let you decide on how to proceed.

Thanks and 73 de N1LQ-Dave

[Elecraft] I survived Dayton 2014!

2014-05-19 Thread dhhdeh
Hi Slava,

I had the pleasure of sitting directly across from you on Friday night at the
SWODXA Dinner. We had a great group at our table with your two friends from
Staten Island and the others from W0-land. Lots of laughs! That dinner is a
great Hamvention tradition.

I also echo your comments on Elecraft and what they do. I've had my K3 since
February 2008. It was a great purchase and still is a great performer.

I hope to see you next year with the multitudes at Dayton.

[Elecraft] K3 AGC Adjustment Parameters

2007-10-11 Thread dhhdeh
Hi Everyone,

While only my second post to the reflector, I have read everything about the K3
here since last May. I have my K3 order in queue in the second run in November.

First to Eric, Wayne and all at Elecraft, my hearty congratulations on the
birthing of the K3 this week. If the User Manual is representative of the
tranceiver, this is going to be one fine journey ahead for us all.

But I need some enlightenment. In reading the FAQ's concerning the AGC
parameters of the K3, I found the following discussion:

"Are the settings variable in terms of attack, hang, and decay?
In the menu, you can set the following parameters for AGC: Attack time, Hold
(Hang) time, Decay rate (in dB/sec for Fast and Slow), Threshold, and Slope.
Slope sets the compression you get from AGC, whether you like everything above
the threshold to be flat (S4 and 40 over S9 are the same level) or some sort of
slope (2:1, 10:1 whatever) so stronger signals are somewhat louder."
In the User Manual under the program menus on page 50, I only see adjustable
AGC paramenters for Hold, Pulse and Slope. Nothing on adjusting the 'attack
time', 'decay rate' or 'threshold'.
Did I miss something elsewhere in the manual or am I misinterpreting something?
Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Now...Wayne and Eric, et. al. ...bring on that K3 panadaptor and especially
that KPA800 Linear!
