[Elecraft] remote viewing of NaP3
I run local and remote every week as I travel from my main station location to my antenna restricted shore home. I don't have a problem swapping out the DB-9 serial port cable, the PTT cable, and the audio out cable when I switch over, it takes about a minute to do so. What I would like to do is split the serial cable from my local PC to the K3 and the RRC-1258. This would allow me to run my NaP3 panadapter s/w along with the RRC-1258, allowing me to view the panadapter at the remote control station with teamviewer. I tried a simple Y cable and it didn't work, anyone have this working? I have a copy of LP_Bridge running, maybe activate yet another virtual comport? I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible as I leave the frozen north for Florida for 7 months after the summer is over here and require a bullet proof setup.... 73 Jeff kb2m __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K3/0 mini remote rig problem
I'm trying to get my remote setup running again at a different location. It's been awhile since I last set it up, I was using it at my winter home for several months without a problem, but can't get it to work here. I have the feeling I'm forgetting something. Here's my setup and the problem. I'm connected to the internet via Comcast. I'm at my summer home, and just had the new Comcast router installed yesterday. I'm using a WiFi extender that I used in the past with no problem, the extender is configured with my connection ID with a _EXT extension, without a password. The RRC 1258 is connected to the extender via an Ethernet cable, the setup I've been using with no issues. When I run the Microbit setup program using a USB cable connected to the RRC 1258 I'm seeing the local RRC, but not the remote one at the K3 site. I vaguely remember that I should be seeing both RRC 1258's ? But I'm not sure. Anyway when I turn on the K3/0 mini I get the connect beep(not the no-connection alarm) but the K3/0 shows a freq and TERM and the controls are inoperative, turning the main VFO does nothing, etc. So to recap. 1. I think I should see both RRC's in the Microbit s/w config window ? 2. Do I need to enter the login info for the local router, but I forget where to do so if true. Anyone have anything for me to try while I wait to call Elecraft support ? 73 Jeff kb2m __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 all in one box? + P3/0
Sorry for my confusion, I was thinking IQ as the usable form of IF at the control site, not the raw 8 mHz IF. My idea would be to somehow get the IQ output from a LP-Pan or similar device, add another box on either end to send and receive the IQ data, then simply use the control stations computer soundcard and run your panadapter software of choice. Only problem here is I don't have a clue on what to use for the remoting of the IQ output from the LP-Pan... All this non-portable, not suited for hotel room use would work for me as I will be at a desktop computer for 6 months or so while remoting from my summer home. And of course to not stray from the original topic, it would be nice to have the control station use a P3 with the extra data lines intergraded into the 1258, or K3/0 mini mark II :-). 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Fred Jensen Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2015 19:59 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 all in one box? + P3/0 Hmmm ... K3 1st IF is ~8 MHz. Could pose some problems for generally available "overIP" for many people. I/Q sounds like a better way to go with a PX3? I guess that would require an outboard quadrature demod at the "real" K3. While I don't do remote stuff right now, we're eventually going to have to sell our 5 ac and move to a 1-story house, probably with CC&R's. Consequently, remote operation may be a part of my future. Since I got the P3, it is the almost total focus of my concentration when operating ... Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 all in one box?
I already own a K3/0 mini, RRC-1258, power supply, etc. I would sell all of this and buy a K3/0 mini, and remote box as you describe, 'IF' it had an IF out at the control end of the station. I really don't think this would be real hard for Elecraft to do, but the market would have to dictate... Every single menu item you change will only influence the remote K3 but not the control side (as soon as they are connected *all* actions on the mini will only have effect on the remote K3 ... that's how it is designed). So if you change from rP.L (where the RemoteRig box is connected) to FP.L you effectively take away the remote audio input to the remote K3. ;-) The K3/0 mini is all hardwired! It seems the foster front panel connector is wired for dynamic mics only. At least my Kenwood fist mike which is a dynamic one works without any trouble there. The 3,5 mm sockets in the mini's side can be configured for w/bias or w/o bias. This is done by a jumper inside the remote head. Of course you could also solder a small adapter for the foster that puts the 8 V available on a separate pin as bias to the mic pin. BTW: The foster mic socket in the mini will also automatically be disabled as soon as you plug in something to the 3,5 mm mic jack! So don't wonder ... ;-) For PTT you can also use the PTT jack on the mini's backside (avoids clutter on the front if you are using a headset anyway). Hope that helps. Let me know if any other questions ... have been using the mini for quite some time now ... 73, Olli - DH8BQA Contest, DX & radio projects: http://www.dh8bqa.de Am 29.12.2014 um 23:34 schrieb k...@arrl.net: > While waiting for Elecraft to get back to me on this I thought I would > ask here also. > > Along with the issue of the K3/0 mini not powering the remote K3 on > just off, I noticed today that I can't get any audio drive out of the > FP.L mic sel, I only get audio out of the rP.L mic sel. Re: [Elecraft] Computers in the Stone Age
Ok, here goes... I remember in 1982 buying a 2k memory add on module for my Telephonix desktop computer for $2200.00. I bought a loaded XT in 1985 for $11,700 it had 2 10 meg hard drives, and something called a 370 option, which allowed me to port my mainframe IBM object code from my radar analysis toolset and get it to run under VM/PC, on the PC. We also developed the first 3rd party ISA card on the IBM buss. I remember sitting down for a morning with several IBM engineers going over machine cycles. They told us we couldn't do it, we did. I remember making my own DB-9's by hacksawing down a DB-25. At the same time we should realize the risk of advance notice is that factors out of Elecraft's control, e.g. parts availability, may slip the actual ship date. Ed W0YK/4 Excellent observations. The typical consumer electronic device product development cycle (not including market analysis and requirements development) is about three years, so Elecraft is completely within norms in this respect. You don't know, despite all of the modern analysis and modeling tools available, how something is going to perform until you build production-intent prototypes and start putting pressure on your supply chain. I think that this is another case where Elecraft's transparency has a down-side, and that down-side is that some of us have unrealistic expectations based on knowing when development started and the forecast start of production. I think that we need to remember that Elecraft is doing the best that they can to meet their forecasts and they give us a chance to participate in the specification of the product. This is, to me, greatly preferred to being forced to accept what a handful of detached, insulated engineers think that we need. Re: [Elecraft] Icom 7100 and KAT500/KPA500 PTT issues
The 4-wire AH4 connection doesn't PTT key the amp. It has 12v, ground, Start, which is a signal from the Icom to the tuner that is asserted when you press the Icom tune button, and ah4 key, which is asserted by the tuner when it needs a tune level signal from the Icom. The amp needs a separate PTT key line from the Icom RCA connector to the kat500, and another RCA cable from kat500 to amp. The AH4 Key line is distinct from exciter to amp PTT and although both have key in their names, they have different purposes. One of our diagrams in the owners manual may have omitted the RCA keying cables. A manual revision is in the works. 73 de Dick, K6KR Thanks for the info Dick. The use of the word KEY in the Icom description of pin 1 was confusing me. Your explanation makes this much clearer now. I also got a reply on this offlist and was told they got their 7100 KAP500/KAT500 setup working with the interface explained in the IC-7100 advanced instruction manual page 2-11. In addition to wiring the PTT OUT circuit, you also must configure H-SEND in the SET CONNECTIONS menu (page 17-26). Also found on page 19-11 is a simple mod to output the band information. I'm not sure how this would be used with the Elecraft pair without building another cable. We will look into this later, unless someone has tried already. So I think we can say the Icom transcerivers with AH-4 ATU interface description on page 8, and figure 3 in the the KAT500 tuner manual would be in error if all Icom AH-4 interfaces are the same ? 73 Jeff kb2m __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I found this antenna shootout done in 2002 by the HFPacker group I'm a member of http://hfpack.com/antennas/shootoutreport2002.html This should give someone a good idea on the performance to be expected by a portable antenna setup. First. I have a 4xxx series K3, built by Elecraft that is fully outfitted and filtered running LP-Pan, an EMU-0202 and a MicroHam Station Master. Second, I have been operating an IC-7700 for the past 2 yrs. That being said I have run both rigs side-by-side into a IC-PW1 and Palstar AT-Auto. I must say that each radio has its own benefits and is outstanding to operate, but here is where the K3 shines: 1. True dual VFO/dual receive; 2. Easy MARS modification (yes, I am a licensed AF MARS Operator); 3. IF out. LP-Pan and PowerSDR are outstanding; 4. ESSB - of course with the proper filtering being installed; 5. Tx Eq and Noise Gate - No out-board W2IHY EQ is needed (sorry Julius); 6. Light weight; 7. Unbelievable receive audio with the appropriate filtering; 8. Menu flexibility;and 9. Easy updating of firmware. Candidly, I still love and use the IC-7700, but more and more I am utilizing the K3. The K3 is an outstanding value and robust transceiver. As a separate matter (a bit of a rant here), and for example having seen the ARRL and Sherwood engineering reports regarding the FTDX-5000. We as hams are always in search of "nirvana". While I have heard the issues regarding the FTDX-5000 design that have not made the mainstream press, the issue here is not to bash Yaesu, but to congratulate and thank Wayne and Eric for the OUTSTANDING job, not only with the design and operation of the K3, but their support of the user group to identify issues and improvements and their outstanding customer support when you call them for assistance. I thought it would have been much better to NOT try and save a penny or so a connector by designing the red and black connectors to be made from the same mold. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Reviews
I also ordered mine at Dayton and received it last week. It is installed and working 100%. I'm seeing the full 10 watts output. RX seems very good. Two small problems with the install. The supplied cross brace had one screw hole mis-aligned. Also the three screws to mount the 144XV to the side panel were missing. I used three brass screws I had on hand. A short call to Elecraft and a new cross-brace and the three missing matching black screws are on the way to me. I could of drilled out the bulkhead to accommodate the misaligned screw hole but didn't want to get any metal chips inside of my K3. If the original brace didn't have metal removed from the 144XV area I could of just trimmed it to fit around the 144XV. But if I did this it would of weakened it to the point that its purpose would have been defeated. It will be a simple job to replace the brace when it arrives. I won't even have to pull the K3 offline. I'm not complaining about the two small hardware issues. As it was from the first group ,one can expect some minor fit and finish problems. I would give it an EHAM 5 of 5 ! 73 Jeff kb2m On 3/1/2010 2:23 AM, Brett Howard wrote: > Also if someone has recently gotten > theirs I'd be interested if you could mention when youu ordered. mailing list __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft P3 panadapter at the Orlando Hamcation
I'm running SDR-IF 192k wide on a $399 3 year old 2.20 gigahertz Pentium Dual Non hyper-threaded processor with 2 gig of memory under WIN7 32 bit. I have a $229 24 inch monitor, and a used Infrasonic Quartet soundcard I picked up for $90.The SDR-IF software uses about 25% of the screens real estate. I just tested SDR-IF's CPU usage. It is under 17% average. I just watched a video I selected from MSN, it uses on average 44% CPU. Along with LP-Bridge running I can use several programs simultaneously with the K3 When in contest mode I run SDR-IF, LP-Bridge, Logic8, and contest specific logging software. I can control the K3 with either piece of software via the virtual com ports in LP-Bridge, via a mouse click, or turn of a knob. While this is up and running I read email, view videos, chat with my GF's on Yahoo, MSN, etc without a burp, and without any geek type system tweaking, plug and play. This to me is the ultimate shack setup made possible with the K3's IF out. I'm one of the people Larry mentions that switched over from Flex. I owned a Flex 1000 for several years. Part of my preference to the SDR-IF software is I've been running it for 4 or 5 years. Do I need a P3? No, and I don't see myself lusting for one. Where I think Elecraft is going with this is to a QRO rig. This K4 if you will, will be 200 watts output, have a bandscope (the one we see today) built in, room for actual band select buttons, more room between knobs, more knobs, less menu items, a nice set of dual speakers, etc. A 70cm module and the ability to run full duplex on the satellites would be nice. I would sell my 9000D and buy one of them. I remoted a TS-2000 for some time when I was on the road for work 2 to 3 weeks a month. Like most people, I used Skype for the audio. For the rig control I used TRX-Manager. Main reason I did the control that way was TRX-Manager used about 300 baud of bandwidth to control the rig, rotor, and antennas. From most hotel's Bandwidth was an important consideration 5 years ago when I was doing this. A real >bargain at $40 -- thanks again for the group purchase, Josh (W6XU). After about 22 hours of use in SS-SSB, I'd like to reinforce John's comments on these headsets. I find the headset quite comfortable, the cans sound very good, and the mic produces GREAT audio. I bought three, and they are replacing the EV RE16 that I've used exclusively for contesting for the last five years! If you worked W6BX, K9YC, K6MM, AK6M, or W6XU, you were listening to the CM500. The mic in this headset is not a FLAT mic, but it's quite smooth and clean sounding, and the EQ is close to perfect for ham radio and contesting. It sounds MUCH MUCH MUCH better than most Heils I've heard (and at 1/3 the price). Because it's EQed for communications use and my existing voice messages were recorded with an RE16 (a very flat professional recording/broadcast mic), I had to re-record all of my SS messages. The only negative of this mic (and it's a minor one, because it's easy to work around it) is that it is a bit sensitive to breath pop and handling noise, so you need to roll off the low end AND keep it away from your mouth. I found myself alternating between two positions -- one below my mouth a few inches, and the other a few inches above and to the side, but out of the way of my nose (so that breathing didn't get into the mic). Both positions are quite comfortable, and both sound very good. I used the higher position for recording the messages. One VERY important caution -- the output from this mic is VERY high, and can easily overload the electronics that it is feeding if you don't take care with gain settings. To record, I ran straight into the sound card of my IBM T22 (eight year old Thinkpad) with the mic preamp OFF, the gain at minimum, and the mic about four inches away. Any closer caused the sound card to clip! I did NO eq while recording. When operating, I plugged the mic and headset into the rear panel connectors, turned on the bias (tap 2 on the keypad while in the mic select menu) and set mic gain to Low (tap 1 on the keypad in the mic select menu). I used max cut of the two lowest bands on the K3 to minimize the breath and handling noise. Re: [Elecraft] Main tuning knob rough
I had some time today to mess around with my main tuning knob problem. I once again removed the knob, and felt washer. Everything appeared normal, there was nothing wrapped around the shaft, all nuts were secure, nothing needed to be cleaned, etc. So I put it back together and all is working fine. I also tried several times to change the clearance between the knob and felt washer to try and reproduce the problem to no avail. I think the VFO A encoder had some kind of problem from lack of regular use that has now gone away. Remember, I only had the problem while rotating the knob counter-clockwise, the tuning knob worked perfectly in the clockwise direction. Anyway all is now well again in K3/KB2M land.. 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jeff KB2M Sent: Tuesday, November 10, 2009 7:02 AM To: 'Elecraft Reflector' Subject: [Elecraft] Main tuning knob rough I just noticed a problem with the main tuning knob on my K3 #1516 this morning. The odd thing is it only feels rough when you turn the knob counter-clockwise while applying slight pressure to facilitate using the finger dimple. I took the knob off, repositioned it(making sure it was clear of the front panel and not crooked, it wasn't) and still have the problem. It is bad enough that after several turns it causes the rotation to stick. Once again this only happens when turning counter-clockwise, with slight finger pressure in the dimple. [Elecraft] KRX3 antenna input
I spent the morning installing a sub rx in my K3 #1516. All is working well. I set it up using the KAT3 ant2 as input the the sub rx. Now I'm thinking that there is no advantage to doing it this way(other then me being too lazy to install the aux bnc connector). Does it really matter, is there any advantage to using the bnc as an rx only input? I have a four way antenna switch downstream from the K3 so there is no advantage to the ant2 not being used by the main receiver as all antennas come in through ant1. The ant2 input would go unused otherwise. Is the bnc rx input better, is it worth taking my K3 apart to install the BNC rx connector ? [Elecraft] K3 sub rx matched filters
I'm thinking of upgrading my K3 by adding a KRX3 sub receiver. One of the things I want to try in the near future is diversity reception. Now, I think I need a matched pair of filters to operate in diversity mode? Or does this just pertain to the 5 pole filters? Or, if I already have an 8 pole 1.8 filter would I just have to buy another one ? I tried to search the archives and there appears to be no keyword search?
