Mark, thanks for the info!
I was wondering about squelch, had it on my K2 if I recall.
I will try this out tonight!

[Elecraft] KX3 settings for 80SSB nighttime

2017-12-27 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com
Folks I have had a KX3 for years and used it mostly on CW (ok.. 95%).
With my rotator cuff surgery, I am up most of the night and listen on 75SSB.

I see NR, and of course PBT I/II as well as the RX EQ. It dawned on me that I
have never adjusted any of them.
Of note is PBT I/II where I am not getting full advantage of the optional
filter.

The background noise at my QTH seems to be mostly atmospheric and S-5. Any
preliminary set-up that I can follow?

I will say it here as we are all friends.
When buying a radio, I ask for the radio to be tuned to a specific frequency

[Elecraft] Yet another scam

2017-12-06 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com
As some of you may know, I am looking for a K2.

I have received an email from a w9per@gmail.com and he sent me a nice
grouping of pictures, seemed legit.
But after some “blowing up on the pictures” of the paperwork, I noticed he
stated the SN is 5526 (in the email text), but the pictures seemed to show 7563.

I just received a very nice email from w9per.bob@ that this radio is not his.

Just an FYI, seemed very legit until the pictures were blown up.

Folks, bear with me, I see a beta version of the firmware.
I have not followed the threads as of late.
About a year ago, we talked about an upgrade for AM for the KX3 and had some
beta firmware.

I lost track, does 2.76 have the AM solved?

Are you connecting the “ground” of the AC mains to the ground of the 12VDC as

You may want to tap individual connectors carefully so “just one gets tapped”.

Re: [Elecraft] Chinese Filters on eBay

2016-11-02 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com
Ya, I would not want to invest that much money in an Elecraft and take a
gunshot approach with accessories.

I pay for what I get.

And… I have some exceptional Elecraft equipment on the desk, in the shack, in
the go-bag and one currently at Don’s place.
I always take the approach to buy what I can afford but sometimes… I do spend
more to get something exceptional.
Wayne, Eric, Don, thanks for all your help over the years and for building
exceptional equipment, as well as exceptional support.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Sidetone

So I have had some quality time with my K2 this weekend.
I am thinking of doing this modification to my sidetone, has anyone tried it?

Seems pretty easy to do and I have always thought it was “my ears”.

Comments?

[Elecraft] Chasing Ghosts (Alarm Bypassing)

2015-12-19 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com
So now into the winter months, I have an issue where I have RFI getting into
things.

After some searching.. I found an excellent guide by our own Jim Brown.

Jim… I think you were the guy that presented at our EMC meeting a long time ago
here in Chicago if.. my memory is correct…
(I have been the Chairman of our EMC MiniSymposium here in Chicago for the past
18 years…)

Jim did an excellent job with a mix of theory and practical, hope you find it
helpful.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 headphone jack

2015-11-23 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com
Have seen that before but….. usually ’someone’ before me had some sort of 6”
adapters coming out of the panel to go to their speaker cord, and the length
just stressed the jack too much.
On the ones that I built I have never seen that issue. I like the KX3 right
angle approach for all the cables coming out of the radio…. And… no adapters!

[Elecraft] Signal One for K3s

2015-11-01 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com
Folks, I am pondering getting rid of my Signal One CX-7A, it’s CX-7S matching
speaker and the (probably only one built) aluminum carrying case for the
transceiver.
Rather then sell it… I am looking for a loaded K3s.
The Signal One was gone through a few years back, has all CW filters, and if I
recall 10Mz as well.

You can see the radio on my QRZ website under KG9H.
This radio is not used as often as I thought I would and now that the Winter
months are about on us… I was thinking of getting trading…
It would come with an extra case and ALL of the extra stuff I have accumulated
over the years.

Off line response please.

[Elecraft] Hats off to the folks from Elecraft for their support

2015-10-15 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com
So in the past week, I drove about 2,500 miles BEFORE I drove non-stop to Tampa
yesterday.

Of course I completely tested out my trusty KX3 before I left so…. radio in
hand we were off to Tampa, driving non-stop and left at 2:30am.

In the first hour, I noticed I had the backlight on and of course the +12DVC
was not connected so I decided to plug in the DC and top off the battery.
(Batteries about 4 months old.) Listening to the low end of 40 as I cruised
along.
Then I got a warning light on the display, and then noticed the radio was hot!

Un-plug, Plug-in, field strip the batteries out, measure everything with DC
voltmeter from my go-kit I made up, all seemed ok on my end.

A call to the automated Elecraft company (it was well before anyone should be
there and left a message.)
Thinking back it was probably kryptic but they figured out what I was trying to
say.

One of their guys called me back and walked me through the process, I did not
miss any steps.

Conclusion by Elecraft - probably one dead cell (??!!)

I ran it on the van battery for the balance of the trip, all seemed ok.

Just left Best Buy with new batteries. All is well.

I guess the batteries I bought from Frys were not as good as I thought.

Could not find any Eneloop batteries in stock so I got Ray-O-Vac 2500mAh
batteries.
I will be on the air with my Alexoop tonight 14.305 just after Sunset locally.
All is well. Thank you Elecraft.

[Elecraft] K2 mic compatibility?

2015-09-16 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com

I have just been handed a Heil mic wired for 8 pin Icom.

Anyone know if the Icom 8pin is pin for pin compatible with a K2 that is wired

Not that I need another mic as I am a CW guy but… I have been on SSB since Don

Re: [Elecraft] If it plugs in, then it should work

2015-08-23 Thread kg9hfr...@gmail.com
My wife came to me a long time ago with a broken iRobot product. She confused
the power plugs -easy to do, they both said iRobot and had the same plugs…
One was AC and one was DC.
If I recall, I had to replace a diode in the broken iRobot.
I used RED and YELLOW tape on the unit and plug from that time on.
