[Elecraft] Linux and K3 Utility

2012-03-22 Thread n4dsp
Running Linux Ubuntu with the K3 Utility and to perform some of the
functions the mouse cursor
must be positioned above the specific button for it to operate. The
button will not function when the cursor
is in that specific button. It is my understanding that Dave Fleming
wrote a command for this glitch.
Anyone know where I can obtain this?
thanks

I've decided to not order the K3, and
am leaving this list today. Being a
1-rig ham, I really need to be practical
and go with a 1-rig HF/60/VHF/UHF rig,
ala IC-7000. Perhaps in late 2008 spring,
when K3 dust settles - I'll be back. But the
1-rig, HF/VHF/UHF and mobile rig - will have to
suit me for a while. And I don't know what
mobiling with a K3 would mean.

I'm a snowbird, in cars, 2 residences, boat
in summer, golf cart in winter. Lots of
shacks.

I will not miss the Reflector. I stopped
doing email administration back in 89.

My K3 order was a 2nd Production Run
order. So long.

Just waded through the digest version and seems like 1/3 of the posts were
on the restrictive CQs subject.
What did that have to do with Elecraft?? How about for this forum we
restrict our postings to topics relating to Elecraft and Elecraft only?
That's why I subscribe.

I'm hoping for hopes, that Elecraft Inc. is seriously
considering a new TRANSCEIVER KIT rig for the future.
K3's and all sorts of K2 mods have been discussed
- probably overly so. Having built and used (for
a short time) K2 #5422 this past spring, there's no
question to me, that the quality, thought, and
engineering that went into creating and supporting the
K2 - is nothing but outstanding. No question ..

A veteral K2 ham related to me the difficulties
of making a K2 SSB rig work well, in the QRP
mode. Bandwidth vs power and all that.

But it seems pretty evident that Elecraft should
seriously pursue creating a K3 base rig, with at
least:

   K3 HF Transceiver
   consider including VHF
   100W pep minimum included
   CW, SSB included
.. then other options if need be
   a real NB
DSP in the IF, somehow standard
   consider GP coverage in receive
larger front panel, knobs and buttons
   LCD color base display
   KITTED product

I'm sure many of us would jump to buy one, and
probably many K2 owners too. It's not being
disloyal to the K2 - it is just another notch
in one's belt, in one's arsenal of ham technology
gear.

If design staff is dear (precious) - hire some
contract RF HF designer(s) to do the major
legwork of the design.

9/2006 the clock is a running
Dayton 2007 isn't that far away

This surprised me.

I needed some fiddly bits for this weekend's net. Drove to HRO in
Portland and wandered about a bit. Asked a few questions about this and
that and joshed them a bit about things. Got quite a number of answers
and then the biggie.

I was asked about the CW nets I had mentioned in passing. Casually I said
I run the Elecraft CW Nets on Sunday. Well, then and there, I was thanked
for running the nets. One of them (nameless unless he wishes to reveal
himself :) shook my hand and thanked me. He had worked me from Florida
more than once on his K1 and enjoyed the experience. Thank you Mr.
Nameless :) I enjoyed hearing your encomium. I blushed a might and kept
my head pointed at the gear. Running the nets are thanks enough for me.
I get a kick out of hearing all you folks from thither and yon. Next
summer I hope to work my way across the continent toward Wisconsin and
maybe even eastward. If I meet you on my journey I will thank you for
being part of my learning experience. Learning what I can and cannot do
with my K2/100 has been exciting. Learning CW while you people suffer is
my albatross.

(Apologies to all mariners)

The Sun now rose upon the right:
Out of the sea came he,
Still hid in mist, and on the left
Went down into the sea.

And the good south wind still blew behind,
But no sweet bird did follow,
Nor any day for food or play
Came to the mariners' hollo!

And I had done an hellish thing,
And it would work 'em woe:
For all averred, I had killed the bird
That made the breeze to blow.
Ah wretch ! said they, the bird to slay,
That made the breeze to blow!

Nor dim nor red, like God's own head,
The glorious Sun uprist:
Then all averred, I had killed the bird
That brought the fog and mist.

The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew,
The furrow followed free;
We were the first that ever burst
Into that silent sea.

Down dropt the breeze, the sails dropt down,
'Twas sad as sad could be;
And we did speak only to break
The silence of the sea!

All in a hot and copper sky,
The bloody Sun, at noon,
Right up above the mast did stand,
No bigger than the Moon.

Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.

Water, water, every where,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink.

The very deep did rot: O Christ!
That ever this should be!
Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs
Upon the slimy sea.

About, about, in reel and rout
The death-fires danced at night;
The water, like a witch's oils,
Burnt green, and blue and white.

And some in dreams assuréd were
Of the Spirit that plagued us so;
Nine fathom deep he had followed us
From the land of mist and snow.

And every tongue, through utter drought,
Was withered at the root;
We could not speak, no more than if
We had been choked with soot.

Ah! well a-day! what evil looks
Had I from old and young!
Instead of the cross, the Albatross
About my neck was hung.

--

Mr. Coleridge saith words I cannot match.

I run the Net
oft caught in my debauch.

I gather my wits;

Folks, (long philosophical response - delete if not interested in my
opinion).

Some very good points mentioned in this thread, but the reality of all of
it

is compromise.
For any given price target, some tradeoffs must be made. If I can
interpret
the K2 design goals loosely, the dynamic range was considered uppermost,
and

good sensitivity and IP3 performance running a close second. To achieve
that in a kit product, single conversion IMHO is the only realistic way to
go.

Yes, there ae very good designs out there for multi-conversion receivers
and

they have their costs and limitations, but the K2 is a compromise of all
that. It is single conversion because that is the way to contain the
dynamic range and good IP3 characteristics within the chosen price range.
It is well known that one must get into the $3K+++ transceivers to achieve
those receive parameters that K2/100 owners have achieved for less than
half

that price.

Certainly, IF shift is not an easy acomplishment with a single conversion
transceiver. Answering one question posed in the thread which asked why a
BFO frequency knob would not do the deed - the answer is YES, BUT - if
only

the BFO frequency is changed, the displayed frequency would no longer be
correct - the firmware currently corrects for both the BFO and VFO
frequencies and displays the correct carrier frequency, so while passband
tuning might be accomplished simply by changing the BFO, the VFO would
have

to be altered manually to compensate for the BFO shift, and the resulting
frequency on the dial would be incorrect. We used to do exactly that on
receivers with a variable BFO, but then we did not have digital dials that
were good to the nearest 10 Hz (but I digress). When CAL FIL is run, all
that is taken into consideration in the firmware, and the EEPROM values
contain the result of that calibration run which produces correct carrier
frequency dial readings - you have to give up one thing to gain another in
any design process unless 'price is no object'.

If the world were perfect, we would all have receivers with a 120+ dB
dynamic range, straight sided selectivity curves (with perfectly flat pass
band shapes and no change in group delay across the passband), MDS figures
in the -160 dB range and all that at a cost of less than $100 - of course
I
am dreaming based on today's technology and price/performance criteria
that

would be within the budget of the majority of hams. There is no sense in
developing a superior design for production that would sell only one unit
because of the cost involved - that is the stuff that extreme designs can
produce, but those are currently the stuff of advanced homebrewers - they
are the designs of tomorrow when the price of such designs comes down to
an

affordable level suitable for production.

One problem with single down conversion receivers is that their
stronger spurious responses which, depending on the IF used,
can be close
to or even in one or more of the frequency bands covered by the
receiver.

How?

In a single conversion superhet, the most important spurs are the
image and
IF feedthrough. In the case of a K2, the image is always about
9.830 MHz from
the desired signal, and the IF is around 4.915 MHz. The bandpass
filters take
care of those spurs very well, in my experience.

If

bandpass filters are used between the antenna connector and the
mixer, their

selectivity might offer some degree of protection against
signals coming in
at spurious response frequencies outside but close to the bands
covered but
obviously no protection against anything coming in at an
in-band spurious
 response frequency.

What in band spurs exist in the K2?

The choice of IF that reduces this problem in a single

down conversion receiver is quite limited.

In a double conversion receiver, up and then down, assuming
that sensible
design and construction practices are followed, the close or in-band
spurious responses (if they exist) are considerably reduced.

That may be the case in a general-coverage receiver, but in a
ham-bands-only
design, the spurious responses are easily handled by good input filters.

Then there is the internal birdie problem, usually created by
one or more
 of
the receiver's oscillators and /or their harmonics getting together to
produce a signal at some spurious response frequency of the receiver.

Re: [Elecraft] plexiglass

2006-07-09 Thread n4dsp

I apologize to everyone how this thread has drifted.
I only asked if anyone has knowledge of where to
obtain plexiglass for my K2. Appreciate if we can

stay on topic. We are now into German Warfare and
has nothing to do with plexiglass. Please Gentlemen.

[Elecraft] plexiglass

2006-07-08 Thread n4dsp
Anyone have the top and sides of the K2 made from Plexiglass and a source?
Would be nice to

see the components in the rig as it sits on the
operating desk.

Re: [Elecraft] Solar Panels

2006-07-03 Thread n4dsp

Douglas,
I purchased a 20 watt Rip Stop Nylon Protected Epoxy Solar Panel from
Connecticut Solar 4 years ago and am very satisfied with them. It will put
out 1200mA which is plenty and more for charging other cells while
operating. Here is the link. They also sell a 10 watt version.

You will need a controller which I also purchased from them. Hope this
helps.

Subject: [Elecraft] Solar Panels

I'm interested in using solar panels to power the K2 for emergency/field day
operations and am wondering what sort of experience others have had. The
panels seem expensive: about $100 for a 5 watt panel but with battery and a
low power draw of the K2, they look like they can sustain operations for
extended periods of time.

How does this work in practice ? Is there enough 'juice' delivered to keep a
station operational ? How about portability ?

Thanks to everyone in advance for your responses.

Relax! I thought it was comical. Glad to see there are others like me. I was
starting to feel weird prior to that. LOL.
