[Elecraft] KPA500 Help - After 2 weeks : still no able to load firmware

2013-01-19 Thread Nicolas Drin

Hi

After two weeks, still in trouble.

1 - I DO know that the Mac + USB/serial cable are working : no problem to
communicate with K3 and P3
2 - if you don't trust me I also used a PC with another USB/serial...
3 - I checked many time the 2 ribbon cables on the I/O board of the KPA500
4 - I put a NEW I/O board send by Electraft ...
5 - At the first attempt, good communication with the KPA500 and beginning
of the firmware load..(STBY led flashing nicely...)
6 - after 30 sec message : MCU load failed
7 - after MANY others tests - no (or sporadic) communication with KPA500
(using MAC or PC)

It looks that something is wrong with the CPU ??
Is it possible to reset the CPU ?

Any help will appreciated but (please) IT IS NO a problem of computer .

Regards

Nicolas, F5HFZ

[Elecraft] P3/SVGA AZERTY keyboard ?

2012-09-04 Thread Nicolas Drin

I received a K360 logitech wireless keyboard to plug in the P3/SVGA.
Everything's fine BUT as a French model this a AZERTY keyboard and the
P3/SVGA is waiting for QWERTY one. Not a big deal (need a little bit of
training) but I wonder if there is a solution. Maybe in the future others
keyboard will be supported.
BTW I am happy with this keyboard thanks to the reflector (and Eric) to
share the info about this model.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Utility and Mountain Lion problem

2012-09-03 Thread Nicolas Drin
Hi

To answer the question.
The problem was the shut down of the P3 Utility after probably the upgrade
of the Mac Os (Lion to Moutain Lion).
The solution is very easy (thank to Adrian VK4TUX), just remove the prefs
file in the user librairy (P3utilityprefs).

Hope this help
(no problem so far with others Elecraft softwares)

[Elecraft] P3 Utility and Mountain Lion problem

2012-09-01 Thread Nicolas Drin
I tried this morning to install the new firmware for the P3 (beta SVGA
0105BEATA.ZIP) but I was not able to run the P3 utility (1.12.4.26). I use a
MAC and the problem is probably the new OSX (mountain lion) I installed few
weeks ago.
K3 utility is running fine.
There was a threat on the reflector on this subject but without solution and
no mention if the OS was Lion or the mountain lion.

Any suggestion or help ?

[Elecraft] KPA #455 not very well

2011-10-29 Thread Nicolas Drin
Hi

I just finished to build KPA500 #455. Unfortunately I found several
problems.

1/ fan is not working (I already checked that the 2 wires are a the right
place on the plug - no inversion like someone reported earlier)

2/ I coupled the KPA500 to the K3 with the KPAK3aux from Elecraft. For some
bands (14,21,10,5.3) when I push the button on the front of KPA500 the band
is changed on K3 but NOT on KPA500 (example 14 gives 1,8 - 21 gives 7) ! For
this 4 bands, in TX mode, the KPA500 automatic band switching selects the
proper band.

I thought to a software problem and i tried to reload the firmware (after a
parameter reset to default value) and I run to my third problem...

3/No communication available with the KPA500. I tried two configurations Mac
and PC. The serial / USB cable is the KUSB from Elecraft and both systems
are perfectly working with K3 and P3 so I am pretty sure that it is a KPA500
problem.

I don't have the schematics of the KPA500 (and in the other hand I'm not a
brilliant technician...) so any help will be appreciated. I should mention
that I already build Norcal 40, SIERRA, K1, KX1, K2, K3, P3 so I have a
little experience and I already checked that I didn't make any mistake
(wire ribbon cable inversion or badly plugged, no thermal insulator). I
performed all test with success with my DMM during the building.

Last point the HF module seems to wok without problem.

So again thank in advance for any help

Nicolas, F5HFZ

[Elecraft] KX1 - 7 displays briefly; then just the single lower left vertical LED segment flashes.

2008-03-23 Thread Nicolas Pike

Hi,

KX1 Build.

Thanks for the helpful replies to my last issue (6 volt supply), that is now
resolved!
I have got to page 42. Then on to the Relay checks - all OK. I switched off
the rig then later I switched back on and plugged in my headphones for the
sidetone test. But 7 displays briefly; then just the single lower left
vertical LED segment flashes.
I have tried a reset but as soon as the switches are released the same Led
segment still just flashes.

Is there anything else I should be checking?
Any suggestions appreciated as my planned /P building attempt has now
paused, and I was so close to getting the RX working!

Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I only get the daily digest.

Thanks Again

[Elecraft] KX1 - U9 - 77L06 - outputing 8.03 Volts...

2008-03-22 Thread Nicolas Pike

Hi,

KX1 Build
I have got up to the test of U3 voltage (Page 28), and pin 6 is at 8.03
volts.. It should be 6! I have triple checked everything so far which all
appears to be in order.
As I am away from home at the moment I am building the KX1 on a small table
and hence lack any more test equipment than a multimeter. Is 77L06 (U9)
likley to be fried? Is there anything else I should be checking?
Any suggestions appreciated as my planned /P building attempt has now ground
to a halt, and it would be great to be able to build some more!

[Elecraft] T Shirt Slogans

2007-04-30 Thread nicolas
Hi,

I like "Ed" [EMAIL PROTECTED] idea, perhaps just boil it down to
simply

K3
The New Peak

And
What's in your shack?

Some other suggestions

1. K3 - Just K3 on the T shirt and the web address in large letters.
Black T Shirt with White lettering... or is that to close to Yaesu!
2. K3 Big 3 - You could add a question mark on the end, or is that just
too cryptic!

[Elecraft] RE: K2 #4039 - Distorted transmit audio

2004-12-10 Thread nicolas
Hi,

The distorted audio moves with the Control board, so either K2 can enjoy
distorted transmit audio, if it has the faulty board fitted!

Just to clarify point 3. The 12v rail seemed to modulate on both K2's
when using either the faulty ** OR ** the working Control board!
As this effect is the same for both K2's with either Control board. This
would seem to indicate it is some other measurement (etc) effect, that
we are seeing?

Thanks again!!!

Regards Nicolas

Original posting.

Hi,

Following reports of poor transmitted audio, and aided by a fellow K2
owner we set about a little investigation.

What happens..

Raspy, clipping?, (distorted by RF?), almost Dalek (For UK readers!!),
sounding transmit audio.

We checked the various board, joints etc, swapped things with the known
working K2 and established..

1. The issue is with the control board, when swapped, it gives the same
fault in either K2.

2. No obvious component problems.

3. Another interesting observation on both K2's, was how the 12v rail
modulates when you transmit?

Any suggestions, where / what to look for on the control board, or other
ideas?

Thanks!!!

[Elecraft] K2 #4039 Headphone Socket - Replacement needed, UK supplier?

2004-11-23 Thread nicolas
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can suggest a UK supplier for the K2’s headphone
socket. Mine no longer switches the internal speaker on and sometimes
makes a poor connection to the headphones. Close internal inspection
revealed that one of the plastic lugs on the “rear switch” had broken
away. So the headphone socket was no longer sliding the rear switch
across.
I have tried Maplin’s and RS, I could find the correct basic socket but
not one with the rear switch.

Thanks!!!

[Elecraft] RE: K2 - 4039 Aligning with Spectrogram questions.

2004-08-29 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

Thanks to everyone for there feedback regarding my bassy audio. I have now
downloaded Spectrogram and read N0SS's K2_SSB_Gram notes (17/01/2001). I
struggled a bit to find the correct settings with the latest version of
Spectrogram but have made a start with the following settings

Sample 22k
Mono
Scope 2
Plot type signal
Averaging 1second
Spectrum DB/hz max 30
Freq linear
Fft 2048
Freq res 10.8
High band Limit 2570
Low band Limit 0

My K2 #4039 is using the unmoded 2.2 (Revison D, Jan 8, 2004) SSB filter

I do get some vaguely sensible graphs(!) But I have a few questions!

1. Are these spectrogram setting optimal?
2. What upper and lower frequency markers should I use?
3. Mention is made in another doc of placing a 10Ohm resistor to ground if
using the headphone output (as I am) do I need to do this if so where should
the resistor be placed? Or should I use the speaker output?
4. Any other suggested documents hints etc?

Thank you very much!! I just want to get my K2 set up nicely and work some
of you guys!!

[Elecraft] RE: SSB Transmit Audio

2004-08-23 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

I have recently completed K2 4039 along with the "K2" Heil Headset, SSB,
160m, ATU and Battery options. I have made a few (6) contacts on SSB.
Yesterday we tried a contact on 20m just across town to a good pal of mine,
and an experienced ham, to really check out the sound of the radio/audio. We
worked through the Mic gain and compression options, but he advised that my
audio was bassy and lacked top end / punch. His audio sounded perfect (Well
to me at least!!)
Ah.. This was a little disappointing.. But we needed to know. So, now the
only other thing I can think to change is the BFO transmit offset? Is this a
place to start??(!) Or what else might I have missed?

Thanks!

I have completed and installed the 20w internal ATU. I am now carefully

Despite a lot of fiddling!!!

Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] RE: Effective Antennas for use with K2 ATU

2004-07-22 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

My K2 is complete and I will finish the auto ATU tonight. I am sure this is
FAQ please feel free to refer me! So, here goes..

What simple Antennas would you recommend for use with my K2 and the built in
auto ATU for

1. Base station use, a small back garden 30ft by 22ft? My "shack" is on the
first floor in a room facing the garden. At the moment I have no holes in
the wall!! If I have to run wires around the window frame to start with that
is fine. Just keen to get going!!
2. Portable, by the seaside or in a pub garden?

Thanks!

Probably not... as long as the sensitivity appears to still be good. Try
removing the KBS2 and replacing it with the two capacitors (which were
previously removed) plugged into the headers. If there's a marked
difference in sensitivity, then there probably IS a problem, otherwise,
probably not.

Double-check the peaks, and use band noise for the peaking, rather than the
noise generator... it usually will provide MUCH more than the required RF
levels and will usually 'swamp' (overload) the AGC (if it's turned on).

The noise generator was really intended for use with adjusting the xtal
filters, rather than fine-tuning the BPF, which requires low signal levels
and good hearing.

Cheers,

Tom N0SS

[Elecraft] RE: 4039 - Bandpass filters?

2004-07-19 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

Firstly, thanks to everyone for their help. I have now completed, aligned
and briefly tested 4039 on 20M.

During the course of this final alignment I worked through the set up
procedure for the band pass filters again, using the small broadband noise
generator I have built (Thanks N0SS). But I just did not seem to get the
same easy "peaks" esp. on the lower bands, that I did when I first aligned
it on 40m etc as an RX only (Prior to fitting the SSB board, TX, etc). Is
something wrong?

Thanks !!!

Nicolas

2004-07-17 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

Thanks!!! All sorted now, the combination of the cabinet screws and moving
the 2 rear rubber feet slightly did the trick. Next job is to get the ATU
built!!

2004-07-16 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

Sorry if this is FAQ, please refer me if so!!

While operating my K2 with the bail arm forward, it "rocks" slightly from
front left to rear right. What is the best way to be rid of this wobble?

Thanks!!

[Elecraft] RE: K2 4039,Failing transmitter tests (Resolved!!)

2004-07-10 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

Thanks for everyone's input! The problem is now resolved, a note from my
Weblog follows!!

Regards
Nicolas
www.m1hog.com

10th July - Main Board - I investigate further; after a good few hours of
wandering through various tests and a few trial and errors, I find the PA
Bias is grounded, instead of showing 2.7k resistance! Which is not helping
matters.. The Pre Driver Bias is OK though. I read through the emails, and
chat with Sean. Further digging and checking, but no real progress. Then off
for a swim, and a chance to properly consider the various email suggestions;
DC voltage checking, PA shorts, removing components, failed components..

Clearly, this problem requires a hot iron and a cold beer. Looking again at
the circuit diagram something is dragging the PA bases to ground, now there
aren't that many components that are, or could be connected to ground, I
start removing them and checking the PA base ground as I proceed. After
various capacitors and the 2 PA transistors! have been removed, the ground
still remains.. I look across to the LPF connection and remove Z1
(Effectively a link to part of T4). The ground to the PA base disappears..
Progress..

Taking another breather, I consider T4 (As well you might) something from
the LPF side of T4 is grounding across T4? Puzzled by this; I remove one of
the T4 output wires(3), and replace Z1, the base ground disappears. After
some wonderment I resolder the wire and the short does not reappear. I fail
to quite see the logic here, but clearly there was something odd happening
with T4.

A considerable time is spent cleaning up and resoldering all the removed
parts, checking along the way. 4039 is once again connected to its dummy
load, and tested. This time we have RF!!

Looking again at the PA circuit diagram also reveals that T4 should have 3
turns on the output not 2, this could explain the slightly high current
being drawn (2 turns are recommended for optimum 5 watt operation. The next
task then is to take the heatsink apart again and rewind T4!!

[Elecraft] RE: K2 4039, Failing transmitter tests - PA Bias Grounded

2004-07-10 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I now have some more information to go
on!

Q7 Collector 3k OK!
Q6 Base118Ohm OK!
Q7 BaseSHORT Not OK!!!

I have checked the diodes, toroids T1 - T4, and carefully looked over the
board for shorts. I have referred to the circuit diagram but I do not really
know now to determine if the PA Bias section is grounding it, or if the PA
section is grounding itself, or some other section is grounding them!!
(Although don't "think" much else can?)

Wondered if you had any suggestions?

Thanks
Nicolas

[Elecraft] RE: K2 4039, Failing transmitter tests

2004-07-09 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

I have steadily and carefully built my K2 and it has passed all the tests so
far with flying colours, including 40m RX. Now I have just completed the
transmitter stages, and attempted the first tx test... Ah problems. Well
things have gone well so far!! Even a bottle of Hoegaarden did not help...
This is what happens.

1.40m rx working fine.
2. Connect dummy load etc
3. Set for 2.0 output, tune to 7100
4. Press and hold tune.

A bleep in the headphones, the output limiter on the PSU flicks in cutting
the power briefly and Elecraft displays on the K2. (I have tried another PSU
(3amp) but the same result) If the power is turned down to .2 or so it will
stay in tune mode

Upon checking the antenna connection, there appears to be a short between
earth and the centre of the BNC.. (Using a DVM) This cannot be correct?

I have tried another PSU (3amp) but the same result.

Perhaps you could confirm if an indicated short across the BNC, is
incorrect, and any suggestions of where to look first would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Nicolas

[Elecraft] RE: Toriod winding questions (Sorry!)

2004-06-25 Thread Nicolas Pike
Hi,

I have now carefully wound and installed the first few Toroids for my K2.

Vertical Toriods - As I did not want the wire crossing back over the
windings to the mounting holes. I have a bare part of the Toroid (i.e no
wire) where the core sits on the board. Not sure of the percentage, could be
20% bare.

Horizontal Toriods - As I did not want the wire running parallel to the
windings and back to the mounting holes. I have a bare part of the toroid
(i.e no wire) where the core sits on the board. Not sure of the percentage,
could be 20% bare.

I know the manual says 85% as a target. Am I worrying too much? Is it ok /
desirable to have the wire running parallel to the windings, in order to get
fuller spacing around the core? if so, are they secure with the extra
"loose" wire? I have read the toroid page and looked at photos but I have
missed this mounting detail!

Thanks!

Nicolas
