[Elecraft] Computer interface problem with KX3/KXPA100

2016-05-15 Thread peterc281
A guy at the radio club is trying to get N1MM working and when he switches on
the KXPA100 the computer serial port fails.
We have confirmed all the cables will work independently ie. The KX3
responds when connected to computer and the KX3 controls the PA. But, as
soon as the PA is switched on the port fails as shown in the computer device
manager.

[Elecraft] K3 won't boot up unless POWER button held down

2015-03-06 Thread peterc281
If I switch my power supply on then hit the POWER button 8 green lights come
on but the screen is blank.

If I hold the K3 POWER button down while I apply power when I let the K3
POWER button go the radio works OK?? What's the fix? Reset the rig?

[Elecraft] KAT500 RF tap for SDR Pure Signal

2015-01-21 Thread peterc281
As well as using my K3 to drive my KPA500/KAT500 I am also using a Apache
Labs Anan-10.

There is a means of improving the linearity of the SDR transmitter using
“Pure Signal” This is achieved by sampling the xmit signal and making
appropriate corrections via the computer.

The xmit signal is sampled at the output to the antenna and needs to be
appropriately attenuated in the order of 40dB.

As the KAT500 already is sampling the RF for various functions I would like
to tap off the RF signal to use for this feature. I see there are test
points in the KAT500 marked VFWD and VREFL but unfortunately they are DC
voltages and I just need RF.

So, the question is, is there a schematic diagram available for the KAT500
or has anyone been brave enough to jump is and tap of some RF for this or a
similar project?

I notice there is a capped off hole on the back plate which would make an
ideal place to fit a connector to output the signal.

[Elecraft] VK9MT transmit audio distortion.

2014-04-05 Thread peterc281
It was disappointing to hear some of the SSB signals from VK9MT, especially
on 20 metres late Wednesday 2/4 , the transmit audio especially on that
occasion was weak and distorted.

I had similar bad Tx audio reports when I took my K3 to Norfolk Island VK3NT
which was never completely resolved, maybe it’s an earthing problem at
remote locations as I don’t have the problem at my home QTH.

It is fantastic to see Elecraft supporting DX-peditions with equipment loans
or donations but their reputation is easily tarnished if the equipment does
not perform correctly when the whole amateur population is tuned in. I hope
the engineering people at Elecraft are onto this and able to solve the
problem.

Finally, thanks to the VK9MT team who did a great job under very difficult
conditions and I hope they arrive home safe and sound.

[Elecraft] Software to graph antenna SWR

2013-12-16 Thread peterc281
Some time ago I had this program that you could use to sweep the antenna and
produce a printout of the SWR among other utilities for the K3. I have
googled but cannot locate it anybody remember what it was called? It was a
windows program.

2013-09-11 Thread peterc281
Thanks for the reply Bill. I remeasured the current. KRX3 on 1.82A off 1.52A
so if the extra current is consistent with the KRX3 on and off with your
measurement then I've got an extra 400mA sneaking off somewhere?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 overheating smell after an hour or so.

2013-09-11 Thread peterc281
The pot was damaged in transit returning from VK9NT and was replaced with an
Elecraft supplied part. As I said in the original post everything is working
fine, that's whats strange, replacing the pot may be coincidental.
Temperatures last night ... ambient 20c, FP 35c, PA 33c. I put a blob of
heatsink paste to the screw that holds U12 and put my multimeter temp probe
in that and in measured 40c.
Has anybody measured the current draw, is my 1.54A excessive?

[Elecraft] K3 overheating smell after an hour or so.

2013-09-11 Thread peterc281
I know this is like asking how long is a piece of string but like they say,
if you don't ask
I recently replaced the volume control in my rig and since then if the rig
has been running for an hour or so I notice the smell of an over-heated
component when I come into the room.
The front of the right hand side panel near U12 5V regulator seems warmer to
the touch than I would expect but everything is working fine.
I have done a careful visual inspection and found nothing.
It is a 100W rig with ATU and SubRcvr fitted and the input current with
13.5V is 1.54A which seems a bit high.
So the question... anybody got any ideas where I should look?

[Elecraft] K3 transmitter gain calibration fails due high SWR

2013-05-23 Thread peterc281
I decided to run through the calibration of my K3 after it came back from the
VK9NT Dxpo. I find I can’t complete the transmit gain calibration as the SWR
is to high on some bands.
1.8 to 10.1 are fine, the rest are as follows 14.1 is 1.5:1, 18.1 1.8:1,
21.1 2.7:1, 24.9 2.2:1, 28.4 2.4:1, 50.1 1.3:1.
I’m after suggestions what to look for as I am not sure what could cause
this problem.

[Elecraft] Adapter to use KXUSB with the KPA500

2013-02-18 Thread peterc281
I have just completed the firmware upgrade on the KAT500 and found it a
breeze with the supplied KXUSB cable.
It got me wondering why nobody has come up with an adapter (so it could be
used with the KPA500) by mounting a 3.5mm stereo socket in the back of the 9
pin serial connector and wiring the appropriate connections. Is this
possible?
I'm fairly sure if the KPA500 was on the drawing board right now it would
have the 3.5mm computer interface socket the same as the KAT500.
