[Elecraft] KX3 Temp. Cal. Routine Issue Revisited
So I'm having the same problem as I've read in a few past posts (with no resolution). At Approx. 40DegC I lose the signal in the speaker, the S meter reads no signal, and the F value starts to wildly swing in the 700 range. I'm directing my hot air at the heatsink for what that's worth. I had it increasing at about 1degC per 1-2 minutes as instructed. I can't imagine the procedure is still going ok given those symptoms but maybe it is. Any thoughts? Re: [Elecraft] Magnetic Loop Antenna Question
Sorry, this ended up being quite long winded! I'm currently building one from a Russian Vacuum Variable Cap from ebay. Pure DC resistance is the biggest challenge as I see it. Even little additional resistance just turns into useless heat in the loop so R needs to be as low as possible. The MFJ mag loop helps in that dept by welding the loop to the variable cap. Since that is out of reach I am going to use one solid piece of copper pipe bent into a circle and then a length of 1" solid copper strap will be soldered to each pipe end and wrap around the ends of the vacuum cap. I figure once a year I should disassemble the copper/vacuum cap connection and clean any oxidation off. I found 6cm aluminum automotive fuel pump mounts on ebay that fit onto the ends of the vacuum caps perfectly providing a mount and allowing the copper strap connection to take place. Email me directly if you are going the vacuum cap route and want to see how I'm doing it. There are two lessons I have learned so far: 1). That Russian vacuum caps are way heaver then I thought. 2): The screw device needs more torque then I originally anticipated. The weight factor just needs to be addressed with a beefier mount. Since it will reside at the top of the loop it will have a high center of gravity and I don't want the wind to knock over a >$200 glass cap! The torque issue just means I need a stronger NEMA17 stepping motor and a 2 amp easy driver board to give it extra current. I imagine when it is cold the grease will stiffen up requiring even more torque. It may come to pass that I will use a gear reduction stepper motor to get the torque I need. I'm tending to figure out the little problems as they crop up! I'm building this one for 100 watt operation as the vacuum cap should be able to handle the voltage. For QRP operation I have found a 2Kv air variable on ebay that (according to the 99pacific calculator) should handle the 10 watt KX2 for portable operation. I'm already starting rev.2 and I haven't even finished the first one yet! Anyway I'm having a hard time finding someone to bend the copper pipe. It takes a rolling tube bender and I don't want to invest $150 at Harbor Freight to use it a few times! Most local garages can't bend 1" pipe. Too small. I need to find a fabrication shop. I could use soft copper and try to make a good circle but I'm a little too OCD for that! Well that's about all I can say so far. I'm sure I'll have more advice as I finally get this thing actually working! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] [OT] Tube Bender for Mag Loop antenna?
I'm fabricating a remotely tuned magnetic loop antenna. I have the vacuum cap and stepping motor tuning system built and ready for a loop. Do any of you guys/gals especially in 3-land have a rolling tube bender so I can make my 3 foot copper loop? I don't want to hand-bend soft copper and would rather not buy a bender for such limited use. I could possibly build a light duty one but U-channel pulleys that will accommodate a 1.1" OD copper pipe are impossible to find online or even on eBay. If any one reading this knows someone in the Mid Atlantic area who can roll a hoop, or can recommend a source for >1.1" nylon U-channel pulleys, I'd appreciate it if you could contact me off list. [Elecraft] [OT] Quick question about portable vertical antenna
I have one of those MFJ telescoping whips that extends to 1/4 wave on 20 meters (40 with a coil). Instead of cutting a bunch of quarter wave radials for each band I'm going to press into service an SGC290 at the feedpoint and use 16, 30 foot radials instead. When using the tuner should I still "tune" the whip to my operating band or just leave it fully extended? In other words is a resonant vertical more efficient then a non resonant vertical with the same SGC and radials in place? [Elecraft] [OT] Jump starter system for K3 portable power?
I'm looking for one of those hand carried jump starter/ portable power units for occasional field use for my K3 plus the rare car jump start in a pinch. Ultimately I would like it to have a replaceable battery, real three state charger that allows it to be plugged in at all times, high current output lugs (not just 12v jack), built in jumper cables, light enough to carry short distances, made in USA! OK that's a tall order! Do you know of a brand and model that covers many or most of these requirements? MOST of the dozens on Amazon do not appear to have the quality I prefer and are throw away, consumer grade units. I do like the looks of the Schumacher ProSeries chargers (22 amp hours or so). If I fail in my quest I'll consider a West Mountain Radio setup that I can lug out to the car if necessary for field use, camping, jump starting etc.. The up side is that Power Poles are standard! PS: I am aware of the amp-hours vs. power output vs. operating time vs. weight aspect of making a selection. I believe not getting a hernia will ultimately define the capacity of whichever unit I choose! Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Antenna Question
OK a very good reality check when you look at the numbers! So I'm still trying to figure out the usefulness of a built in tuner. Two situations come to mind: You have no feedline and are driving a wire right out of your rig with a counterpoise (KX3 portable operations) OR you are using it to just "touch up" the load on the PA from an antenna that is close to resonance. I would hope that a good Elmer would point out that a built in ATU does nothing more then keep your PA happy but does nothing toward getting out a good signal AND that if a tuner is necessary, a remote one is a better choice. Thanks for your patience everyone while I get these concepts "right". Other forums would not have been as accommodating. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Antenna Question
Ok sorry for not providing enough info! Consider this scenario: I have a portable vertical with 4 counterpoise wires that is resonant on 20. Lets say I want to tune the antenna up on 40. I can have a tuner right at the base of the antenna OR I can just use a balun at the base of the antenna and use the built in ATU in the K3. Is there a difference in how much power is getting to the antenna? I assume the tuner at the base is the best option which always makes me doubt the usefulness of having an ATU built in to a rig in terms of getting the most power to the antenna. Am I on the right track? Thanks! [Elecraft] [OT] Off Shore RF amplifiers
First of all, I'm NOT entertaining purchasing one, I'm happy with my 100W K3. I've been away from the hobby for a while and I'm catching up on a few things. I'm noticing quite a few add on amplifiers targeting the portable crowd on the auction site. Most are originating from China. Many show an internal picture and I do not see any obvious forms of LP filtering. Is it legal to run one of these amps without FCC acceptance? If the answer is "no" then is an effort being made to educate people why these amps may be causing harm to the airwaves (in the test question pool, for instance)? Hams, being a notoriously thrifty lot, may be attracted to the low price but may not be aware of, or have the ability to monitor their own signals. I'm not trying to stir up any wars, I'm simply curious about the proliferation of cheap equipment of questionable quality control and if there has been a noticeable change to the bands over the years. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
