[Elecraft] K2 SSB menu question...

2007-03-26 Thread sbanks2571
Hello Everyone,

This may be a pretty elementary question, but I'll ask it anyway.

Am I correct in concluding that the SSBa and SSBc menus CANNOT be edited
without the KSB2 accessory in place on the K2 RF board? (All I see are --
entries in both menus when I try to edit them.)

This morning I connected a Heil - Elecraft MH2 mic after installing all 8 RF
board header pins and the requisite 5.6K resistor on Pins 1-6 of the K2 mic
jack and was surprised to discover that the PTT function works fine, but there
seems to be no way to turn on any SSBa or SSBc menu choices.

Comments?

Many thanks to Don Wilhelm, W3FPR, and Ken Wagner, K3IU, for their thoughtful
and prompt replies to my question about KAT2 Calibration a few days ago.

[Elecraft] K20#1599

2007-03-16 Thread sbanks2571

Just FYI the input/output pin voltages on my new MAR-01 are exactly as Gary
suggested they'd be. The N-GEN's noise signal increased markedly when I turned
OFF the ANT for the 160m accessory, but there's still only about an S4 LED
lighted. On all other bands (except the top half of 10m) there's at least S6
or higher.

I discovered, however, that my N0SS noise gen behaves the same way i.e. MUCH
less output on 80 and 40m than on most other higher bands just like the
Elecraft N-Gen does. . I'm thinking I've got a bandpass filter or two
misaligned. I'll look hard at them and also verify the S-Meter level
adjustments.

Will keep you posted.

Re: [Elecraft] Tororids

2007-03-06 Thread sbanks2571
Al and/or Dianne,

If you have a Hakko-style soldering pump similar to the Model 808, its nozzle
(ordinarily used for desoldering) makes a great way to heat and apply solder to
the varnished leads to remove varnish and tin them quickly.

Prior to using that technique (recently suggested on this reflector), I used a
combination of candle or butane- lighter flame, fine-grit sandpaper and an
occasional light coating of flux to get the job done to my satisfaction.

Whatever method you adopt just be sure that the finished solder joints are
completed with a proper wet look, and measure their resistance to the PCB
board. Obviously, be sure to remove any residual traces of flux that may remain
behind too.

I'm having trouble tinning my toroid leads. In spite
of rigorous cleaning they just don't want to accept
solder ( Kester 44 ). Will adding some paste flux
interfere with electrical qualities of the leads ?

Greetings all.
I have placed my first Elecraft kit order... a K2 plus lots of
trimmings. The old heathkit-er in me rejoices and I look forward to
joining you.

[Elecraft] K2 S/N 5615 IS AIRBORNE!

2007-01-13 Thread sbanks2571
Just a quick message to advise the list that K2 5615 is airborne! It's still
in barebones form (no accssories started yet), but its RF Pout ranges between
16 and 9.5 watts into my Elecraft DL across 80-10m, and its ears are superb.
Lots of audio too.

Ron's wisdom about NOT working too long at a time, and Gary's suggestions about
looking for SIMPLE things (i.e. loose antenna connectors) will - once again -
be tattooed into my brain before I resume building accessories.

CW forever!

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 and KXB3080 build suggestion

2006-12-29 Thread sbanks2571
Kent,

I alsoI have a Hakko 808 desoldering pump, which is indeed a GREAT tool. Is
yours a similar unit? If so, can you enlighten me on how you use it for
toroids?

I respectfully disagree with the suggestion below. My recommendation is
to complete the KX1 first in order to make sure it's working perfectly.
THEN do the 3080 upgrade. If you have problems after installing the
upgrade, you will thus know that the error is somewhere in the upgrade
work, not the original KX1 work. I also recommend playing with the
KX1 for a while before doing the 3080 upgrade in order to familiarize
yourself with its operation and menus.

I had no problems with either kit other than being shorted a resistor in
the RF output mod which Elecraft quickly sent me.

Finally, my opinion only, but a Hakko desoldering gun is the cat's meow
for removing components and also removing the enamel from and tinning
(at the same time) torroid wires.

After completing a KX1 kit and I ordered and built the 30/80 adapter. The
conversion required removal of several capacitors, resistors, toroids, and
a choke that were originally installed on the KX1 board. If you are
anticipating installation of the adapter, I suggest a careful evaluation
of the assembly manuals to determine which new components will be needed.
Installation of these new components during the original construction of
the KX1 would eliminate desoldering and removal of the old components. The
desoldering method that works best for me is to heat and remove the
component. Then, reheat and quickly blow on the area to clear melted
solder. Close placement of components on the KX1 board prevents the use
of a solder sucker.

[Elecraft] KX1 really rocks...

2005-01-28 Thread sbanks2571
Hi All-

Yesterday I heated up the KX-1 here at K0PQ, ran it off of my 13V supply, and
enjoyed three of the most pleasant QRP Qs I'd had in several weeks with
stations in Idaho, Illinois, and Washington. The Bencher Hex added even more
fun. The little KX-1 continues to be an amazing rig.

QRP FOREVER!
