Mike,

If you have the 74154 inputs connected to the K3 band data outputs,

nothing more should be required. The 74154 should adequately isolate

the inputs from whatever you have connected to the output side of the

decoder IC.

I don't even know if the capacitors are required (or desirable),

although since the band data outputs are not dynamically changing, they

should make no difference.

If you have anything else connected to the K3 band data outputs (in

parallel with the 74154), then that may be a different consideration,

but you did not mention anything of that nature. The KPA500 should not

cause a problem.

If you have trouble with the KPA500 band selection, try removing the

capacitors and see if that cures the problem.

[Elecraft] Accessory Line Protection

2013-06-12 Thread w0ih
Well, I got a bit lazy and tired of changing antennas to my K3 so I built a
system to automatically change antennas as I switch bands. What I'm trying
to accomplish is to be able to control my station remotely over the internet
(I use TeamView which includes audio). I'm driving a 160 meter dipole, 80

[Elecraft] Remote K3, the Easy way...

2013-03-07 Thread w0ih
*Remote Control*

I do a limited amount of travel, but when away from home, I like to be able
to operate my K3 on the ham bands, and sometimes find that it gets a bit
complicated getting things setup to operate.
I’ve tried Ham Radio Deluxe and had mixed success getting connected up
remotely. The biggest problem is the need to know your IP address (you can
use DynDns or No-Ip). Plus, you still need to get the audio setup and
running. However, I’ve found what seems to be a simpler process and allows
for some added benefits.

*Remote Control Computer Software using Team Viewer*

To start with, I’m using TeamViewer which is free for non-commercial use.

  http://www.teamview.com http://www.teamview.com

This is a computer remote control application that allows you to log into
another computer and view the desktop and control the computer. The added
benefits of TeamViewer is that it does not require you to know your base
station computer IP address, and also includes a VOIP (Voice Over IP) so
that you don’t need to start up a separate voice application like Skype.
When setting up, you just need to learn a few things, like when starting up
the VOIP, you need to enable the Voice-Over-IP and un-mute both the local
and remote microphones (there may be a setting to do this by default, but I
haven’t found it yet). I use an inexpensive computer headset with a
microphone and get very good audio reports.

There are more advantages to this where you can see your full remote desktop
applications, as I’ll point out later.

Incidentally, this will require that you keep your base station computer on
all the time. I turn off the monitor, it’s not needed. If you’re a bit
more ambitious, you may want to investigate using “Wake On Lan” for your
computer, but again, this is more complicated, but you could save this step
until later if you feel you need it.

*Power Up the AC and Rig Control Enable*

The next thing that you need to figure out is if you want to power your
radio on and off remotely. I happened to have a control that I can use to
turn on an AC power strip through a 15 amp AC relay. I modified a standard
AC strip by adding a cable from the AC black wire to go up to the relay and
then back down to the AC strip. Turning on the relay turns on the AC for my
12v power supply and my rotor control. This same control has a second
relay that allows making a connection to the ACC2 connector on the K3 to
remote power up the rig by pulling Pin 8 to Pin 5 (Gnd) for a short period
of time to turn on the K3. Reference page 18 of the K3 manual for this. To
power it off, you need to send a serial command to the rig from your K3
control software.

There are other options to allow relay control through the computer. Simply
do an on-line search for “usb relay” and you’ll come up with a number of
options, for as low as $30. You should be able to work with a 10 amp, 120
volt relay to power your rig and a few light peripherals.
The application that I wrote for the AC power strip also has a timeout, so
that if I lose the connection, it will automatically turn off the rig after
some period of time.
You might also consider another relay that would trigger the PTT line and
force a 5 to 10 minute timeout in case you lose the internet connection.

*Remote K3 Control using NO5W software:*

The K3 will of course need to be connected to the computer through the
serial port. The connection that you used for updating your K3 firmware is
the normal connection that is used for firmware updates.

As I mentioned before, you can use Ham Radio Deluxe, however, I found that
the CQX Client software available at http://www.no5w.com
http://www.no5w.comto be easier to learn and use. The software
package free and is intended for mobile contest logging (and seems very
nicely suited for this task, interfacing with a GPS) but the thing that I
like so well, is that once you connect up to your K3, there is a functional
K3 application (by clicking “More” button in the upper center of the
application) that allows you to control the K3 in a way that is very user
friendly. We’re lucky that Chuck is such an avid K3 fan!

For some examples: http://www.no5w.com/CQxK3RemoteKit.html
http://www.no5w.com/CQxK3RemoteKit.html

Quick Start Reference:
http://www.no5w.com/Documents/QuickStartForK3Testing.pdf
http://www.no5w.com/Documents/QuickStartForK3Testing.pdf

Basically, it has an operational picture of the K3 with the controls
activated so that each one works with the K3 using the same “tap” and “hold”
features that you’re used to, including the Power switch.

For remote operation, to turn the rig on, you pulse a set of contacts on
the K3 ACC2 connector and the rig powers up. To turn it off, you press the
“Power” button on the K3 application.
Frequency control is pretty simple. The normal control uses the Up/Dn keys
in conjunction with the resolution radio buttons just below the tuning knob.
There’s an added feature using the

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Balun

2012-09-02 Thread w0ih
Steve,

I was intrigued by the use of the BNC connector on the balun enclosure. I
had never thought of that. I was just going to use a short coax cable
between the KX3 and my new home-brew balun.

I built a balun a couple weeks ago using a 1x2x3 box from Radio Shack
($3) and a T130-2 core and #18 gauge magnet wire off ebay or under $10. I
wanted something to match a higher impedance of a W3EDP antenna, so I used a
balun design by W2FMI using 4 wires (essentially two 4:1 baluns) on the core
and tapped for 16:1, 9:1 and 4:1 (I also tapped off the half coil sides for
2:1, 6:1 and 12:1 (approx). I used a RadioShack 6 position rotary switch
($3). I then marked the switch positions as 100, 20, 300, 450, 650 and 800.
Input is a BNC (female) and output is a pair of banana sockets. It was a
bit of a tight fit, but seems to work out OK.

Testing with an MFJ259B and rf voltmeter shows a progression of voltage
output as I switch through the positions.

I wanted to use the balun for a W3EDP antenna
(http://www.zerobeat.net/g3ycc/w3edp.htm) so I need a higher impedance
output. I have another version of the same balun that I built using an
Amidon 2kw core, but it was too large to carry around for the KX3 in my
portable case (I use an old video camera case that carries everything).

The larger version of the balun worked just fine when I used it with the KX3
and internal tuner. Just change impedance tap positions until I get a good
match with the tuner. I haven't actually tried the new balun yet though.
I may modify it to use the BNC connector like you have implemented.

I have some pictures, but not sure where to upload them to.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - 1:1 balun

2012-07-18 Thread w0ih
Steve,

1. I've seen baluns made with insulated wire, I don't think that it makes
any difference.

http://www.collegearc.com/index.php?option=com_contentview=articleid=165:building-a-current-baluncatid=77:technical

2. I would keep the coax between the rig and the balun short. There could
be some very high SWR's on that piece of coax. You could try to design the
balun box to connect directly to the rig output, but I can't see where a
short piece would make that much difference. (I'm assuming that you have the
internal tuner on the KX3.)

3. As for the triple ratio balun designs, I built a balun recently using an
Amidon kit. The kits typically come with a spec sheet that has about 8
different designs. You can also look up the designs in the ARRL Handbook.
The design that I used has a 200, 450 and 800 ohm output tap and it's also
possible to tap at other ratios (1.5:1 to 16:1). I plan to use it with a
W3EDP antenna design. Mine is a 2kw core, but you could easily adapt it to
a smaller core.

If I'm not mistaken, you have KX3 SN 687, I have 688...

[Elecraft] K3 Frequency Shift

2012-04-28 Thread w0ih
A couple weeks ago, I was on 40 meters with a group of friends, and one of
the guys (likes everyone on frequency ;-) suggested that I was off.

I finally got around to checking the K3 last week and found that it was off
by about 260 Hz from what it should have been. I rechecked the calibration
(against WWV, per the manual instructions) and the reference oscillator had
not changed from the original setting (I had it marked down in the manual
from when I first calibrated it). I had to move it by 260 Hz to get it to
zero beat WWV.

Anyone have any idea why it should shift frequency? I can't say that I'm
terribly concerned, more curious about it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Using IC-SM5 Mic

2011-09-07 Thread w0ih
Barry, K8LEF contacted me off line with a solution that worked.

He is using an Icom IC-SM5 microphone as well. Solution was to bypass the
internal microphone amplifier.

Remove the bottom cover from the mic and disconnect the red (pink?) wire
coming from the mic (from the Pad marked ECM+) and disconnect the white wire
from the incoming cord (from the pad marked OUT). Solder these two wires
together and insulate the connection so it doesn't short to ground. You
do need to turn on the Bias for the electret mic. Set it for FP.L bias.
Mic gain works great around 20 to 25.

The PTT line does need to be moved from pin 2 to pin 6 to get the PTT to
work.

Hope this helps anyone else searching for a similar solution.

Thanks Barry!

[Elecraft] K3 Using IC-SM5 Mic

2011-09-06 Thread w0ih
I'm trying to get my Icom IC-SM5 mic to work with the K3. I've setup the
FP:L Bias on the K3 and there is 4.98 volts on Pin 1 of the K3 mic
connector. No output from the rig at all (varied the pot on the bottom of
the mic and the rig mic gain).

I would think that 5v should be sufficient for the SM5 mic.

I tried putting in a 1k resistor from pin 6 (8v) to a 2.2uf cap, but then I
just get feedback (full output) into a dummy load.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for the very prompt reply last week to my query.

So now I have another question concerning roofing filters. Will the KX3 use
the same roofing filter series as the K3?

I added a 2.1 kHz filter in my K3 and found it very effective (after a bit
of learning!). Since then, I've wanted to upgrade the 5 pole filter that I
have in my K3 to an 8 pole. Can I put the 5 pole that I pull from the K3
into the KX3?

[Elecraft] KXw with Bluetooth?

2011-07-28 Thread w0ih
One of the things that I'd like to see on a rig is a bluetooth headset
connection for the mobile setup. I've tried a Jabra transmitter (from a
phone) and a BlueParrot headset, but had too many problems with the Jabra
transmitter not connecting. The headset has noise canceling and worked
GREAT (including with my noisy convertible). Used it both with VOX and a
remote PTT line.

It's nice in a mobile setup to not have to have so many cables. Also handy
in the shack.

I keep hoping that there would be a rig with bluetooth built in along with a
PTT line... (hint). Might open a new market for headsets with PTT.

Re: [Elecraft] Battery Charger Voltage High?

2011-05-26 Thread w0ih
My question is, do you have a 12 volt battery in the circuit with the
charger. Probably not, if the voltage is running at over 15 volts.

Chargers are made to run with a battery connected, which would drop the
voltage to about 14.4 volts while charging, no higher.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 visualizing local noise

2011-03-31 Thread w0ih
I had a similar problem not too long ago with a noise that was drowning out
lots of the 75 meter band. I had the LP-Pan at the time (I have a P3 now).
There is a broadcast station several miles from here and the noise made that
harmonic so much worse!!

Tracked it down to a cheap Macbook laptop power supply from China. I took
the cord off that was OK and put it on the original Mac supply (which is
clean) and it works great.

Moral is don't buy cheap laptop supplied off Ebay.

Re: [Elecraft] Receiver Damage from another Close Station?

2011-03-04 Thread w0ih
I may have to build a circuit to add some protection.

But I'm not sure where I add it in. I want it in the receive line, but not
in the transmit line. Is there somewhere in the K3 that I can tap off to
limit the input signal?

[Elecraft] Receiver Damage from another Close Station?

2011-03-02 Thread w0ih
My next door neighbor is a ham and recently upgraded to a Icom 7700, 200
watt.

The antennas for my K3 are pretty close to his. I have a set of dipoles
(160, 75, 60 that share a common feedline) that are about 30 feet off one
leg from the neighbor's HyTower (75 thru 10 full size vertical). I have a
TH11DX up at 50 feet (boom is loaded for 40 meters also, separate feedline)
and he has a TH5DX at very close to the same level, directly east of my
tower, about 100 feet away.

I have a Heathkit SB 220 amp (2 kw input?). Neighbor runs barefoot for now.

So, my question is, do I need to be concerned about damage to either rig?
I'm assuming that we can't operate the same bands at the same time. Our
operating schedules seem to be very different for now. But I'm wondering if
there could be input damage from one operating on any band, even if the rig
is off.

I was wondering if the K3 input is grounded through a relay when turned off,
and similarly on the 7700.

Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] Ref Osc calibration question

2011-01-30 Thread w0ih

I noticed that when I went to AM-S (AM Sync, AutoTracking), that the
frequency showed:
  10.000.010

So, I figure that the Reference Oscillator was off a bit. So I tweeked the
oscillator slightly until the frequency showed 10.000.000 when I when out of
the Config Menu.

Is there anything wrong with this logic?

I couldn't seem to hear beat oscillator when I get close to the 10 Mhz
signal to adjust it by the manual.

[Elecraft] Xmit, Rcv Equalizer on K3 Utility

2010-10-03 Thread w0ih

One thing that I have a somewhat difficult time with is getting the transmit
and receive equalizers setup. It's a bit cumbersome to setup the equalizers
through the RX EQ and TX EQ menus on the rig.

I would be very helpful to have the equalizers on the K3 Utility in the form
of a normal PC equalizer, with sliders for each of the 8 bands in a
graphical form.

While I'm dreaming, it would also be nice to have several memories that can
be saved and restored for different setups (DX Narrow, BroadBand, etc.).

I searched through the archives but didn't find this suggestion anywhere.

[Elecraft] Question on K3 and LP-PAN

2010-08-16 Thread w0ih

In looking at the LP-PAN and the connections, and what I've seen on the Flex
radios, if you connect up an LP-PAN to the K3, the receive signals that you
hear through the computer sound card output would NOT be going through the
K3 roofing filters.

The LP-PAN would of course give you the spectrum display, but not the signal
processing from the K3.
Any signals that come through the computer would be internally (to the
computer) generated.

Therefore, if you wanted to use the K3 system filters, you need to go
through the K3 audio output.

Is this true?
