Re: [Elecraft] K3 - A different RTTY question

Exactly my findings at MW2I. Normally we dont use dpb as incoming signals
arrive all over the place frequency wise (in arrl rtty 2010 3 people called
over 1.5khz off!) outside the dpb passband. However it does help with really
weak signals when you have QRM

And which other radios provide multiple PTT outputs? A simple set of
phono sockets and diodes in a small project box will provide parallel
keying, if that is what you want.

Like some others I find the inability of the K3 PTT to be split between
HF and other equipment such as transverters irritating.

Also my K3 outputs a low on Key Out for about 1 sec on power up which
inconveniently activates external T/R relay switching.

Hi all,

I have built a number of interface boards for my K3's that some of you may
be interested in. Since a K3 only has one PTT output, I have built an
interface board that takes the LP Keyout, DIGOUT0 and DIGOUT1 and generates
a separate PTT output for HF, 6m and non-Elecraft transverters that use the
low power outputs from the KXV3. It also provided a switched 12v to control
the 6m preamp since DIGOUT1 is used on this board. The board contains 6 RCA
jacks, one is 12v in from the 12v jack on the K3 rear panel and another RCA
is provided with 12v out. There is a switched 12v jack that is activated on
6m for the remote preamp and then the 3 PTT output for HF, 6m and VHF
transverters.

This is not in competition with the KRC2 which does band decode and lots of
other cool stuff, this is a quick and easy way to control amps and
transverters. It is NOT for folks running QSK as the relays are typically
35ms switching. I will have some pictures up on the K8GP website tonight. I
have about $30 in parts and will provide the units assembled and tested. You
will have to provide a interface cable with a DB15HD for the ACC connector
on your K3, the other end of this cable connects to this board via a push on
connector (supplied) and a suitable enclosure.

If you are interested or have questions, please reply off list directly yo
me.

73,

Terry

Hi,

I am starting to get the my K3 integrated into my station.

I am thinking about building a breakout box to bring several of the pins on
the ACC connector out to RCA jacks.

I was wondering if I just hack off one end of a standard VGA cable if the
cable has enough wires in it to get to all the pins on the ACC connector?
Or, get a 15 pin VGA connector and make up my own cable?

Comments from the K3 community?

Bringing the K3 to England for christmas this year (in its padded bag inside

Hi Wayne and the list,

without having actually testing this:

 * EU REPEATER 1750 HZ PL TONE BURST: If a 1750 Hz
PL TONE is selected, a 500 ms tone burst will be
 sent on each PTT activation.

This sounds wrong.

During a normal QSO the tone is only needed once. Here in DL the
1750Hz tone is used to turn a repeater on, and it stays active until
it no longer detects an incoming signal for 10 seconds or so. In
other words, transmitting the tone as a kind of inverse roger beep
would be very irritating.

I don't have a linear amplifier. I do have a transverter, and I use the KEY
OUT jack to put it into TX. Trouble is, it puts the transverter into TX
whatever band I'm using. For LO stability reasons (not to mention that I can
never remember to switch the transverter off when I'm not using it) I'd
prefer to be able to leave the transverter switched on but only receive a
PTT signal when the VHF band is selected. I think that means I'd need a
circuit that combines the state of DIGOUT0 with KEYOUT-LP, such that it
grounds the transverter PTT input when DIGOUT0 is 0V and KEYOUT-LP is
grounded. Has anyone made something like that?

ERR PLI was the most immediate, in this state there was no main vfo

did a config: vco md recalibration of vco1. It failed with error message
err05 on the display

just on a hunch, I wondered if anything memory wise had got corrupted so I
reloaded ALL the 3.14/dsp2.16 software

After finishing, i had NO ERR AT3 error, but i did still have the ERR
PL1 error. I wasnt too surprised at the latter error as it had just failed
calibration

redid the config: vco md recalibration of vco1, it passed this time

On power off/on no error messages

All is now well again in the land of the K3

Incident cost me 30 minutes of valuable painting time before the texas heat

Jim, you said supposedly accurate. A Bird wattmeter is accurate only if
it's been properly calibrated and handled carefully - especially the
slugs. Bumps and bangs can easily ruin the calibration (That's why all
Birds used in critical applications carry calibration stickers showing when
it was last checked - normally no less often than annually - and is
carefully handled and stored in approved containers).

Let's assume the Bird is recently calibrated and treated kindly:

1) Its calibration is then dependent upon using the right slug. You probably
know better, but a surprising number of Bird owners think the frequency
range on the slug isn't very important. I believe the proper Bird 43 element
for 6 meters is the type A slug spec'd for 25-60 MHz.

2) Are you allowing for the normal error in even a perfectly-calibrated
Bird? That's +/- 5% of *full scale*. IIRC the Bird 6 meter slugs have full
scale ranges of 25 or 250 watts. If you're measuring 100 watts with the 250
watt slug, the possible error in a properly-calibrated Bird is +/- 5% of 250
watts *anywhere* in the scale. So at 100 watts indicated, the actual power
may be anywhere between 87 and 112 watts.

That's plenty good enough accuracy for nearly all field use, including for
showing that transmitter power levels comply with FCC regs (although when I
demonstrate a marine transmitter to FCC engineers, it's *their* Bird that is
the final word ;-)

Now, the K3 has simply another wattmeter built in, so it's normal for the
two wattmeters to disagree by the sum of their possible errors.

You asked, Which one is more accurate? One of the Elecraft engineers would
have to answer that, but let's assume the K3's built in wattmeter is as good
as the Bird. In that case a perfectly calibrated Bird on a perfectly
calibrated K3 may disagree by as much as 15 watts at 100 watts giving you an
indication of anywhere between 85 and 115 watts on the Bird when the K3
meter says 100 watts.

And don't forget that assumes everything is in perfect calibration. In the
real world, it's not unusual to see a greater error.

That's why it's not normally considered important for owners to worry about
the K3's power calibration. Unless you have some laboratory standards to
compare to each other and to the K3, it's almost impossible to improve on
the default factory settings.

Ron AC7AC

Gentlemen,

How accurate is the built-in watt meter indicator in the K3???

I'm asking because when I've used a supposed;y accurate Bird 43 while

outputs on the various HF bands there seems to be a slight discrepitancy
between what the K3 is
showing and what's actually there according to the BIRD!!! I'm
particularly interested in the
output readings as concerns 6 metres! Which is MORE ACCURATE???

over the lack of a ptt only when transverting from the k3.

It is at http://g4fre.com/k3vhf.pdf

A better approach is to set the K3 bandwidth very narrow, and
use a panadapter to produce a waterfall that is independent of
the real receive bandwidth (and which can thus be much wider
than any of the K3 roofing filters).

Absolutely! I've been playing with an RFSpace SDR-IQ and a beta
version of Spectravue. It provides panadapter and waterfall that
can be set anywhere from 1 to 190 KHz wide ... clicking on it will
tune the K3 to put the narrow filters in the right place. N8LP's
LP-Pan and PowerSDR should also be able to provide the same
 capability.

SDR-IQ and SpectraVue work very well with microHAM Router since
SpectraVue's new external panadapter function can use Router's
2nd CAT port to control the K3 at the same time as a logger and
digital mode package like DXLab Suite or HRD/DM780.

Thanks to information from Charles Allen (who suffered the same issue) and
help from Dale at elecraft, the problem has now been identified as a subin
board production defect

The inductor (L3) that supples bias to switch the tx/rx pin diode to the tx
path on the board was not, and had never been fitted, hence drive doesnt get
switched to the tx path

The missing inductor is on its way from CA

The board was supplied with the subrx last november. Wayne assures me all
subin boards are now 100% tested

I wonder if anyone else has experienced the following? (and what the cure
was?)

In a k3 with atu xverter interface and subrx.

Ant 1 is selected

vfo a is set to cw mode and receives OK. Keying it shows rf output on the k3
power meter and the external power meter

vfo b is set to cw mode on the same band. Doing an a/b swap and it receives
OK, Keying it shows rf output on the k3 power meter and the external power
meter

if I activate split (rx a tx b) using the above settings, keying shows rf
output on the k3 power meter and the external power meter

however if I activate the subreceiver with split (still) enabled keying
shows NO rf output on the k3 power meter and NO rf on the external power
meter. A signal can be heard on a monitor receiver.

Also if I leave the subreceiver activated and turn off the split (no split)
keying still shows NO rf output on the k3 power meter and NO rf on the
external power meter. A signal can be heard on a monitor receiver

using bset ant changes the subrx receive path as expected but doesnt
affect the tx output

I was using the 2.82 software. I rolled back to 2.76 but still have the same
issue

Re: [Elecraft] Transverter offset

2009-02-07 Thread ww2r2
If by offest you mean the transverter offset (config: XVxOF) it applies to
both VFOs.

This brings up another interesting K3 Xverter observation from the VHF
contest a few weeks ago

config: XVx RF allows only 3 digits of MHz, quite reasonably, because thats
all the display can show. However it is these 3 digits of MHz that the RS232
will report.

Example on 1296 with Xv4 RF set to 296 rs232 reports 296.100, which is not
recognised by the logging program as its not a ham band.

I have already asked elecraft for a feature request to allow 5 digits of MHz
to be entered in Config:XVx RF and be reported by rs232 but (as now) only
show 3 digits of MHz on the display

Currently the work around (on 1296) is to tell the logging program and the
F1EHN tracking software (for auto doppler correction) i am using a xverter
with a 1 GHz local oscillator so 296 appears as 1296 again

I need to put in an offset for 1296EME into the transmitted signal.
My question is, I am using VFO B in a split frequency, ie transmitting on B
and receiving on A.
Can I put the offset into VFO B or does the transverter offset only apply to
VFO A. I feel the manual is not
clear on this point.

Re: [Elecraft] Silly question - what is KEY OUT?

2009-01-22 Thread ww2r2
Do not be mislead by the manual as I was last weekend during the VHF
contest.

The LP has nothing to do with low ***RF*** power. It is active when
producing 100W or 0dBm in transverter mode. Currently there is no K3 keying
output that is ONLY active when transverting. To achieve this I had to gate
the KEYOUT-LP on pin 10 and the DIGOUT0 signal on pin 6

Perhaps it should have been labelled LC (low current)?

From page 17 of the manual

KEYOUT-LP at pin 10 of the ACC connector is similar, but the max voltage
is lower and it is limited to 10 ma.

Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 Installation ; ERR VCO 00227

I got chance to try the fix recommended by Aptos today

As there is virually no lead length between the end of the windings and the
connections to the pcb, it was a challenge to move the end turns, but by
spreading the turns between the end turns the err vco 00374 no longer
happens

I had a similar issue with mine last weekend, but the error code on the sub
vco was 00374

I swapped the sub and main vco resulting in the error repeating on the main
vco

It appeared to be a board issue. So I called Aptos monday who advised me to
open up the toroid on the vco board and spread the turns slightly.

Been on a road trip since so havent had chance to try yet
