Re: [Elecraft] Soldering Naked

2010-12-19 Thread ynkedragon

Phil,

I too have had the experience of feeling liquid solder on bare skin, but in a
less dramatic part of my body.

When I was young and dumb, about 35 years ago, I was attempting a repair of a
wire antenna with the broken connection about 6 above eye level. A large drop
of solder fell on the inside of my forearm and sizzled as it cooled and
hardened--then had to be dug out of burned flesh, I NEVER made that or a
similar mistake again, always asking myself, if some solder falls . . . where
will it fall?

You have quite a gift for teaching an important lesson in a funny and dramatic
way. Thanks for making me laugh
until my sides hurt.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!

2010-10-13 Thread ynkedragon

Hi Mark (and group),

If you think signing for a package is a hassle, just try filing a claim for
lost one. I had a package (containing one xtal filter) taken off my porch
about 15 years ago. Didn't realize that it was missing till I contacted the
vendor asking about the long delivery. Even though the value was just under
$100, the claim became a prolonged battle among vendor, UPS and me. It took
about 5 months till the vendor was finally paid by UPS. Only then would they
ship a second filter. All this time the vendor had my money; I had paid by
check.

Since then, I've had valuable packages sent to my office. If your employer
won't allow personal deliveries, a business near your home (one where your have
a regular relationship) might accept and sign for your packages. My
neighborhood animal hospital does this for several customers.

The irony of my lost filter? I found it about 9 months later while doing some
landscape work. Someone (kids?) had stuffed the package into a Yew bush about
20 feet from my front door. The bush was dense, the package small and it would
have stayed there forever if I hadn't done major trimming.

can't believe that Elecraft is sending my K3 requiring a signature! How do
hey expect a working person to be at home when UPS delivers to get a
ignature??? When I ordered the rig over the phone nobody told me that this is
he way they ship. And to boot, I would have to drive over one hour to a UPS
elivery center to pick up the radio. I certainly hope they will call me
omorrow and straighten this whole mess out. This certainly does not give me a
ood impression about the company. Just venting Mark KB3Z

Sorry to hear that T-T has moved away from one of their claim-to-fame
features--PIN diode QSK.
I have a 30-year old Argosy which did QSK so silently and so well.

I hear there's a company somewhere in California--Aptos, I think--which still
knows how to design radios with silent QSK. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] 43 foot verticals

Since 43 foot verticals work equally well (or badly) with all brands of radios,
couldn't this discussion be developed further on an antenna forum somewhere?

[Elecraft] KPA-500; meets many needs

2010-04-20 Thread ynkedragon

Guess it depends on operations and locations, but I see the KPA-500 meeting
some broad operating needs.

I frequently operate portable, for contests, and enjoy a power boost above
exciter level power.
I've looked at the somewhat portable ACOM 1010, but it lacks 6 meter coverage
and full break-in.

Tokyo High Power? Similar band coverage and QSK issues; can be a little more
portable.

The Ameritron (MFJ) solid state amp? Again 6 meters and QSK are lacking.
Also, I've had too many QC issues with that company's products. YMMV.

So, the '500 appears to offer a very compact (K3 size, 22 lb.) package, full
160-6 meter coverage and QSK--all with internal power supply. Sounds like a
traveler's delight to me as well as being a medium-power level amp for home
use.

What's not to like? I hear wishes for a built-in antenna tuner. For some
people that's a need, for others a non-issue. When I use a tuner it's a
Johnson matchbox with ladder line into the shack. If I'm using a coax-fed
antenna, I will work it, and work it, work it some more till it is resonant and
no tuner is necessary. That's me.

Is 500 watts not enough? For the rarest of the rare DX, for top-ten contest
results, maybe not. But it is a better-than-5 dB improvement from exciter
level. There were recently expressed wishes from some on this reflector for a
150~200 watt PA. Here's an amp that, with reduced drive, gives that
sought-after power output level. The 500 watt power level is also compatible
with the power limits in many European countries.

Do I like what I see so far? Yes.

[Elecraft] Mea culpa (KPA-500)

2010-04-20 Thread ynkedragon

Thanks Wes, N7WS, for sending me back to my calculator.

500 watt output is indeed 7dB greater than 100 watts, not the 5 dB I
previously stated.

Even better.

It should have
tarted A fellow. He told me that a Big Gun would never buy a K3.
1 due to not having 200w, #2 due to ergonomics. He basically said
hat people that buy a K3 don't use it enough to not see the inherent
laws in the layout, size etc. of the K3. He felt the 1000d was much
etter.

A recent meeting of the Frankford Radio Club (FRC) which includes a substantial
number of Type-A, Big Guns seemed as much a K3 convention as it was a club
meeting.

I know some Yankee Clipper Contest Club (YCCC) member calls show up on this
reflector. The K3 is becoming quite popular among the members of Florida
Contest Group (FCG), too, I am told.

If FRC, YCCC and FCG members, are not among the Big Guns in the US contest
scene, would A fellow please tell us who is?

[Elecraft] mode-bandwidth question

2008-11-12 Thread ynkedragon
This may sound like a stupid question to experienced K3 users, but I'm
in the About to send in my order stage of being familiar with the
radio. I've read the manual but may have missed this point.

Specifically, on the K3, does mode selection control maximum receive
bandwidth? For example, can I tune through a quiet 10 CW band with a
2.8 KHz filter enabled, but in CW mode and ready to transmit? Or,
because I have selected CW mode, and have i.e., a 400 Hz filter
installed, am I limited to a 400 Hz wide window on the band?
