Well, I don't click on obfuscated links with no explanations. He could
have easily put the text from some pdf doc into the email instead.

I could use 5 of each to start.
Please let me know what you have sitting around.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] {K3} How to run Diversity mode [long]

2024-01-01 Thread Dave
With a K4D diversity operation is easier than it was with the K3, as you
can swap the auxiliary antenna between the main RX and 2nd RX with the
press of a button (no cable swapping in the case).

For many years I have used a simple active antenna alongside my main
antennas. By using a horizontal main antenna and a vertically polarised
active antenna, you can benefit from polarity diversity. This works well on
the lower bands.

Protection for both the active antenna and the receiver can be done by
turning off the dc supply to the active antenna while transmitting. A
single transistor switch connected to the linear keying phono socket is all
you need.

This page describes a simple 2 transistor active antenna and associated
interface:

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] K3S TX calibration failure

2023-12-21 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
Hi Ron,

Did you use the K3 Utility to run the TX Gain Cal
automatically or did you perform the calibration
manually?

If you used the K3 Utility, it should display
the status of the TX Gain on each band
and at each of the 3 power levels. Does
the TX Gain Cal report indicate that the
transverter output test fails on every band
or just on some bands/

Did you use the Configuration menu to enable
the KXV3B module?

You don't often get email from groups...@jugcitydirt.com. Learn why this is
important

CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the University System. Do not

Not entirely - the 5W and 50W calibration went fine. But the XVTR output
failed. Message indicated that there was not enough output for a “pass”.

Re: [Elecraft] ELECRAFT K3-F P3-F & SP3.

2023-03-03 Thread rreynolds51
It’s a hard decision! I’ve been looking at YouTube and talking to people that
have both radios. Both are really good radios, as is the K3. I’ve been inactive
for a few months so getting back into and trying to figure out what I want to
do. I have a lot of classic radios I’ve used for years in the garage. LOL.
Getting close to pulling the cord however.

Re: [Elecraft] ELECRAFT K3-F P3-F & SP3.

2023-03-02 Thread Edward Mccann

Tnx Julia and Dave;

I just thought it would be enlightening to hear whatever knocks “Rick” had in
the K4, and if he actually had first hand experience with one or was parroting
some of the negative spin floating around.

Ray was very convincing on his support of the K4, in any case!!

Good on ya’ Ray.

Thirded; another bit of context I try to provide is a quote or page number
when "it's in the manual", and I appreciate it when others do.

(And, while we're on "ways we can make the list more usable for each

CAPITALIZED and The First Letter Of Every Word Capitalized are needlessly
difficult to read.)

Hi Rat:

This is your response to what was probably a very interesting question with
comments from someone named Rick, apparently comparing your K4 to something
else.

I was curious as to your incoming from Rick.

Good luck wit the sale of your gear. Should go like hotcakes!

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 with uninstalled KRX3 for sale

2021-12-14 Thread Scott Manthe
I have an Elecraft K3, SN3019, and a uninstalled KRX3 that I'd like to
sell. I'm offering it here first, as this is where I originally picked
it up.

K3/100 with original synth board, works as it should.
The configuration:
KAT3 internal tuner
KBPF3 general coverage board
KIO3A I/O board
KXV3 RX antenna/transverter board
KFL3B-FM 13kHz filter
KFL3A-6K AM filter
KFL3A-2.7K SSB filter
KFL3A-500 CW filter
KFL3A-200 CW narrow filter
With all manuals and a Cady K3 book.
Pics available on request.

KRX3 with original synth board, not installed in K3:
KFL3B-FM
KFL3A-2.7K
KFL3A-500
with manuals.

I'd like $2300 for both the K3 and the KRX3. I'd prefer not to split
them up, unless I get strong offers for both.

I also have a PR6-10 that I'll include for an extra $145, or I can sell
it separately after the rig sells. If these prices are out of line, let
me know.

Hi Lyn,

First off, THANK YOU for the help!! I must have been unclear in my
first post...

I was using Winlink Winmore, and it does drive the radio to different
frequencies, the radio control is partially working... It also used to
work 100%...

I am presented with a COM port, not a USB selection, (Winmore, or Vara),
when in the RADIO SETTINGS within the program, nothing to do with USB...

I was not aware there was a Red Cross drill was coming up. I keep
Winlink around in the event of an emergency, it would be nice to be able
to get out an email or two in that event.

My Winlink setup is based on my desktop machine, (not mobile in any
way), which is Windows 10. It has worked in the past with zero issues
across multiple updates...

Hi,

Is anyone using Winlink, (latest), with Windows 10, (latest), and a K3?
All used to work, and all of a sudden PTT fails. All else works, the
radio is driven to the best frequency, etc... I have made no known
changes. There was a windows update... I would like to verify it still
works, and if so, to get some settings from you...

You're welcome, Mike.

With Wayne's permission, I did a copy and paste from the PDF manual into Excel,
but that was several yeas ago, so it doesn't include the most recent firmware
updates.

With my K3S, I keep track of the settings the old fashioned way, by writing
them down on a printed copy of that section of the manual. I also have
VA2FSQ's program, which I really like.

The K3 problem was quickly solved by Leo Duursma, PA0LMD.
An RF choke (RFC30) was open.
Thus, the diodes D25 did not get the required switching voltage.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Problem

2020-08-15 Thread Mike K8CN
Hi Per-Tore,

Can you identify which transistor (or other device) on the LPA module is
getting hot in transmit mode?

The drain terminals of MOSFET PA transistors Q4 and Q5 receive +12V
regardless of TX or RX mode, but the gate bias voltages are applied only in
TX mode. Unless there's a problem with the bias regulator circuit (U1), the
RF amplifier chain on the LPA module should not be getting that warm. It is
also possible that one of the RF power transistors may be getting hot
because it is no longer making good thermal contact with the bottom cover
panel - it would be good to check the tightness of the three screws holding
those transistors against the bottom panel.

Is it possible for you to carefully extract the LPA module from the main RF
board? That requires removal of the rear panel of the bottom cover, and you
may need new thermal pads for the RF transistors if those pads are damaged
by removal of the cover panel. If you can remove the LPA module, you might
try RX mode ONLY with the Power control set to 0 (to ensure that the KPA3 PA
is bypassed by its relay K1) and see if your receive sensitivity is
restored.

The output side of the LPA module is nominally connected only in TX mode to
the antenna path via diode D1 on the LPA module, and if the D1 switch is
operating properly one would not expect the high attenuation of signals in
RX mode. The output of the LPA module is also connected to the input of the
100 W PA module at the same point on the T/R switch circuit, but that module
is bypassed by relay K1 on the KPAIO3 board.

I'm not yet sure how the overheating of a device on the LPA board is
connected to the loss of RX sensitivity. If the diode switch D1 on the LPA
module has failed shorted (unlikely), then it would leave the output
circuitry of the LPA module bridged across the antenna signal path in RX
mode.

Keep us posted on what you learn!

73,
Mike, K8CN

Measured voltages over the PIN-diodes D26 & D27.
In Rx: 0,72 VDC. over both.
In Tx, the voltages varied a bit around 0,4-0,6 VDC.

While in TX, even with power set to 0,0W, one of the transistors in the LPA
is getting quite hot.
Cools down when switching over to Rx.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Problem

2020-08-14 Thread Per-Tore Aasestrand
 Hi,

Still working on finding a solution to the below problem.

Elecraft support said:

"Since you are hearing signals, on frequency is presumed, only attenuated
~30 dB,
The SYNTH circuit is not the first place I would look."

Any suggestion wrt where to look first?
I guess it must be somewhere on the RF Board.

Where can I find the PCB layouts with components id's?

73,

Per-Tore
LA7NO

---

The K3 suddenly stopped working.
One day all OK, the next day serious problems.

Serial no.: 07818.
It has ATU and 100 W PA installed, and also a P3 connected.
Both K3 and P3 were earlier well calibrated.
Supply: 14,5 VDC.

Symptoms:
- Rx seriously reduced sensitivity, only strong signals to be heard.
- No Tx output. Tuning not successful, no SWR indicated (only the 3
hyphens).
- Same on all bands.
- All displays, controls and menus apparently working normal.
- Mic-gain & ALC normal indication on SSB.

All menu settings seem to be OK.

Connected an XG3 and injected a -73 dBm signal.
It showed up on all bands with signal level about -100 dBm, so around 30 dB
attenuation.

Connected a LP-100A and a 50 ohm dummy load.
Whatever we tried, the LP-100A indicated zero power out on all bands.
Same on both Ant1 and Ant2.
Bypassed the ATU: no change.
Set power to < 10 W, effectively bypassing the PA: no change.

It is clearly something that is common for both Rx and Tx.
It is independent of the selected band.
Apparently not related to ATU or PA.

So, it could be some relay problem, or related to the SWR bridge or
LP-filters.

Hope you can give some helpful ideas on how to proceed.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3/100 w/ATU, Factory-built and Reconditioned

2020-08-12 Thread N8WL
For Sale: Elecraft K3/100, factory built, S/N1626. The unit was factory
reconditioned (with all hardware updates) and aligned three years ago, works
perfectly, and comes from a non-smoking, pet-free home. It has the most
recent firmware available. It is in great condition with no scratches. The
screen is very clean and the controls are all clean and function perfectly.
I have acquired a K3S and I don’t need this rig now. Purchase includes power
cable, manuals, documentation, Fred Cady KE7X K3 Handbook, and the MH2 hand
microphone. Will be shipped in the original box and packing materials. $1650
includes shipping insured CONUS – PayPal only. More photos available.

Full disclosure: My shack was struck by lightning 5-6-17 and this rig
sustained damage. I sent it to Elecraft and they totally repaired it (for
$559), documented all the work, updated all the hardware, and did a final
checkout, calibration, and alignment. It looks like new, and if I didn’t
tell you about the lightning hit, you would never know it. The included
factory documentation states that this rig “meets or exceeds all factory
specifications.” I don’t want the buyer to think I am withholding this
information. This rig had several options that I transferred to my new K3S,
but what is left is listed below. Also, I am the third owner of this K3, and
both previous owners have taken excellent care of it, as have I. It is in
pristine condition, everything works perfectly, and the buyer will be very
pleased.

Includes:
100 W Amplifier Option
2.7 KHz filter – installed
KAT3-F 100 W ATU - Factory Installed
KXV3A RX Ant., IF Out and Xverter Interface
KDVR3 Digital Voice Recorder, not installed
Power Cable
MH2 Hand Microphone
Owner’s Manual
Fred Cady KE7X K3 Handbook
All previous receipts and factory documentation

That is why just looking for loose TMP connectors may not be sufficient.
While you are inside the K3, give all the TMP connectors a slight twist
which should clear some of the corrosion.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 problem

2020-07-27 Thread Mike K8CN
Hi Per-Tore,

I don't know if there's an easy way to check the PIN diodes in the T/R
switch, especially since the SMD components of the switch are mostly on the
underside of the RF board. Here's where I would start:

1) Find spots on the RF board (top side) where you can measure the control
voltages 7R and 7T. Verify that these change in opposition to each other,
i.e. if 7R is high, 7T should be low and vice-versa, when changing from RX
mode to TX mode and back.

2) Presuming that both voltages 7R and 7T behave properly in switching from
RX to TX mode and back, I would measure the voltage on the drain of Q7, the
MOSFET switch, when 7R is high. Assertion of 7R should pull the Q7 drain
voltage low, which causes sufficient current to pass through both PIN diodes
D26 and D27 to enable the RX signal to pass through, presuming there is not
a problem with PIN diode D25.

3) It is possible that the Q7 drain voltage could be pulled low if only one
of PIN diodes D26 or D27 functions properly and the other has failed open,
so test (2) is not conclusive.

4) If you have a scope with a 10X probe, I would check for presence of RF on
the anode of PIN diode D43 when in TX mode - any frequency on the VFO within
the scope bandwidth should suffice. D43 must be forward-biased by the 7T
voltage in order for RF drive to be coupled to the low power (10 Watt) PA
assembly (Z2 on the block diagram). The fact that you have not been able to
detect any transmitted power in TX mode whether the 100 watt PA is bypassed
or not may indicate that the low power PA is not receiving drive from the
mixer. The 7T voltage is supplied to the anode of D43 via the low power PA
input connector, but it's unlikely that the simple path internal to the low
power PA board is at fault, i.e. 7T is not reaching D43.

I haven't had my K3 opened up for many years, nor have I experienced the
problem you described, so I can't easily point out where to access the
circuit points mentioned above.

There is another set of PIN diode switches around the mixer, but I would
start with those closest to the low power PA before going further back up
the signal processing chain.

73,
Mike, K8CN

You might check the PIN diode T/R switch. The high attenuation in RX mode
and no output power even when the 100 W PA is bypassed suggest that one or
more of the PIN diodes in the T/R switch have failed "open."

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 problem

2020-07-27 Thread LA7NO
Hello,

Best regards & 73 from Norway,

2020-04-22 Thread Dave Cole

Hi Jim,
Thanks, I was hoping you might chime in with some advice... It will be
simple to add a ground to the panel... I used metal BNC with star
washers on each. Also, thanks for the links, I'll go look them over in
the morning!

Ain't no such thing as a "ground loop," except to the extent that it
could couple a magnetic field. In practice, that only happens when
there's an error in mains power wiring, or when there's leakage flux
from a big power transformer in close proximity. Indeed, with proper
bonding for lightning protection and hum/buzz/RFI control, there SHOULD
be loops due to multiple bonding paths. That's addressed in this slide
deck for talks I've done at Visalia, Pacificon, and to multiple ham
clubs, and most of it was incorporated in Ward Silver's ARRL book on the
topic, on which we collaborated.

http://k9yc.com/GroundingAndAudio.pdf

I will be installing an entrance panel, and an additional ground rod
later this summer.

The entrance panel will be connected via #6 to a set of three 8 foot
ground rods, one at the electrical service, one at my shack, just
outside the house, 15 feet away from the service ground, and a third,
15 feet further down the house, all connected with #6 as well.

All incoming coax will be fed in via the entrance panel.  The entrance
panel is a NEMA4 weatherproof box, 3 by 2, with a 1/4 inch copper
sheet bolted to the raised supports in the rear of the box.

The copper plate inside the entrance panel is where the station
outside ground system connects, and where the stations inside ground
system connects via a Polyphasor on each coax cable, and a #8 copper
wire.

On the rear of the desk will be a CM Choke I constructed-- RG-400, on
two FT-240/31 cores.

At the antenna, is coax, feeding the Entrance panel.  I am conflicted
on grounding the base of the antenna, and possibly adding another set
of Polyphasors there...  More reading is needed on this...

The aforementioned link, and Ward's book. BTW -- all the connectors on
that beautiful new panel SHOULD be bonded to the panel, and the panel
should be bonded to your station ground bus. Elecraft's earliest VHF
transverters were built with feedthrough BNCs that were insulated from
the shielding enclosure, and the two I bought used are unstable as a
result.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] Latest on the new home for my K3...

2020-04-22 Thread Dave Cole
The finished product for grounding will be less pretty! I am using a
single point type grounding system, with one of those copper bars
mounted on insulators as the center.

That bar is mounted on the rear of the desk vertical, (not on the
hutch), just below where the hutch sits, and centered left to right
behind the K3/P3/Amp/Tuner, about 6 inches below the back of the desktop.

Below that will be two 12 connector power strips. All power is fed to
the two power strips from a UPS, so everything save the KPA500 is on
clean power. The UPS will be grounded as the radios are. The KPA500 is
on the same AC circuit, but not on the UPS.

A flat copper strap will run from the grounding bar directly to each
rigs chassis ground point, not via Panduit, but behind the Panduit. All
computers will have the chassis grounded in the same way, but I will use
a #6, not copper sheeting.

I am trying to reduce the potential for ground loops, so I will not be
using the patch panel as a ground connection point, it will just look
like long coax runs to the equipment.

I'm halfway thru a complete shack reorg. Cabling not so fancy but I
am using peg-board with tiewraps thru the holes to dress cables. I
have 17 external antenna cables and at least that many rotator and
control cables going outside. Main advantage of the reorg is
shortening cable length to both QRO amps and 50A PS (dropping IR
loses). Photos on my website when complete.

The standard in the telephone industry always was to lace down the
cables to the cable tray every 2 feet or so, What today's "technicians"
do is an exercise for the viewer.

I will leave the wire ties at the entry and exit points to the Panduit

But... Given it is a patch panel, and the cables to it are specifically
designed for the radio I use, (K3), changing configurations won't be a

That is the reason for the patch panel in the first place, avoid
rewiring for every change.

If I want to move antenna, or if I want to feed the output of the radio

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] Latest on the new home for my K3...

2020-04-22 Thread Dave Cole

Hi,
I did a quick and dirty review of the software used to design the Patch
Panel, at:

www.nk7z.net

top review...

The tray is Panduit, see:

http://www.panduit.com/heiler/SelectionGuides/D-WDSG01--SA-UKE-WiringDuctProduct-W.pdf

I used the F type of Panduit.

Yes, I’d like to know to and the source of the cable trays.
It’s very neat and professional.

Mind you, it seems to me, that lots of cool stuff is not available from UK
suppliers :-(

This story concerns four people – Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody
would do it.
Anybody could have done it but in the end Nobody did it.
Everybody got very angry over this because it really was Somebody’s job.
Everybody thought Somebody would do it, but Nobody realised that Anybody
wouldn’t do it
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody had asked
Anybody.

My son is a robotics engineer and designer, so I knew he would be

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] Latest on the new home for my K3...

2020-04-22 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
Yes, I’d like to know to and the source of the cable trays.
It’s very neat and professional.

Mind you, it seems to me, that lots of cool stuff is not available from UK
suppliers :-(

73 de David, M0XDF

This story concerns four people – Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody
would do it.
Anybody could have done it but in the end Nobody did it.
Everybody got very angry over this because it really was Somebody’s job.
Everybody thought Somebody would do it, but Nobody realised that Anybody
wouldn’t do it
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody had asked
Anybody.

2020-04-21 Thread Dave Cole

Hi Clay,

I used the folks called Front Panel Express at:

https://www.frontpanelexpress.com/

Took a few hours to learn the free software they provide, but overall it
was easy. Not cheap, but very good results...

They even have a version that runs under Linux...

Going out on a limb here, but does anyone have one of the Black Main VFO

2020-03-16 Thread Fred Jensen
It doesn't "necessarily" represent your transmitted signal, but in your
case, it seems that it is, or at least very close.  Likewise for me.
There are amplifier stages following the IF which can [and often do]
introduce distortion which won't show up if monitoring the IF frequency.

However, HRD/DM780 and FLDIGI will do that.  Just put the radio in TEST

You can send a string, say a letter ‘T’ (etc.) in CW mode with tone

For example:
KYW;
The ‘W’ forces the K3 to complete the message send before moving on

Here’s one way.
You can send a string, say a letter ‘T’ (etc.) in CW mode with tone
output only by embedding “<“ (RF off) and “>” (RF on) characters in a
KYtext command.

For example:
KYW;
The ‘W’ forces the K3 to complete the message send before moving on
to other commands in the macro.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] What's your favorite MACRO for the K3 or P3?

2020-02-11 Thread Dave Cole

I use a Genovation Keypad, as described at:

https://www.nk7z.net/adding-external-keypad-k3/

As an example of just how versatile this is-- I tune in a DX station on
the K3, then hit the SPOT button for a CW station to preset things. I
then press a single button on the Genovation, and the following happens:

1. The P3 bandwidth is set to 6 KHz.
2. The DX station is moved to the left side of the P3 screen.
2. The 6 KHz above the DX station shows the pile up spread out.
3. VFO B knob becomes the transmitter tuning control.

This allows me to find a hole in a pileup using the transmit cursor on
the P3, tune to it, using the VFO B knob, and then I hit the "ID" macro
button on the Genovation, this sends my call in the current mode.

This makes busting a CW or SSB pileup really fast and simple. I hit a
single button on the Genovation, (presets everything), move to a clear
frequency using teh VFO B knob, then start hitting a second button,
(sends my ID or launches a memory of my voice), till I get the station...

The Genovation is a 64 external keypad that plugs directly into the P3
where the keyboard should go, no adapters, it just plugs into the P3.

This gives me 64 macro launching buttons, external to the K3/P3
combination. It is slick as hell to use...

I have macros for bandwidth control, mode setting, RTTY setup for the
K3, (DATA A vs AFSK A), at single button press, Power control, memory
launching, etc...

I have a spread sheet of all the above macros, and a few more at the URL
above as well.

All the software that is needed save the Genovation itself, is available
on my site. Genovation has given me permission to distribute a modified
version of their Genovation control software which runs in the
Genovation keypad, and allows it to talk to teh P3 keyboard input.

You can get the Genovation via Amazon for around a hundred bucks...

Btw, Dave, how did you manage to send commands to the K3? Does the P3

Subject: [Elecraft-K3] What's your favorite MACRO for the K3 or P3?

It has been a while since I have seen a macro list for the K3, and I am
reprogramming my external Genovation Keypad for the K3,
(https://www.nk7z.net/adding-external-keypad-k3/), and looking for a few
interesting new macros...

If you got em, post em...
