Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Serial interface question
"Serial IO board K1 is controlled by "SBYB" which traces to signal "BYPRLY". The names suggest "bypass relay" but under what circumstances is this signal set/cleared? In other words, when does K1 open the data out line?" Well I found the answer thanks to another KPA500 owner running a similar test. It turns out that setting SER POLL to OFF and remaining in the Menu stops polling but leaves the relay closed with -12 V on pin 3. Only when the menu is exited does the relay get deactivated and pin 3 goes open circuit. Similarly, opening the menu and setting SER POLL from Off to On leaves the relay open and the relay only closes when the menu is exited. I wonder how many KPA500 owners have been caught by this. 73, Andy k3wyc __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] KPA500 Serial interface question
I started down this path because I'm trying to help a Scottish op who seems to have a failed KPA500 XCVR port. (Scope shows no indication of polling when Ser Poll is on.) KPA500 has an IO board with two serial interfaces. One is for connection to a PC and the other for connection to a transceiver. The data out line of the XCVR port passes through relay K1 and I assumed this relay would be open when SER POLL is set to OFF. My scope measurements show this line is actually pulled low when SER POLL is Off which implies that K1 is not open. With Ser Poll On I see normal polling with IF;FA;FB; My interface works ok although I'm currently using the PC port not the XCVR for KPA500 control. I suspect that Jack is the only one who will know the details but I'm asking here so others can learn if interested. My question is: Serial IO board K1 is controlled by "SBYB" which traces to signal "BYPRLY". The names suggest "bypass relay" but under what circumstances is this signal set/cleared? In other words, when does K1 open the data out line? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - power out question
Thanks to all who answered. I didn't know there was such a perceived difference, at the receiving end, between 500 Watts and 850 Watts. I have always been under the impression that doubling of power (3 db gain) was the least discernible difference and that if you did not, at a minimum, double your power - there was really little to be gained. Also, I am amazed at the reported differences in power - from 350 Watts to 600 Watts. That is a rather large disparity. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - power out question
My KPA500 puts out 600-650 watts with 35 watts drive on all bands. I'm not sure exactly what's going on with people getting 350 watts out. I'd guess those reporting 350 watts are running high duty cycle modes, like RTTY or AM. People listening to your signal will likely notice very little difference going 850 watts to 600 watts output. However, the KPA500 adds 6 meters, QSK and auto bandswitching, which for me was worth more than the 3dB I was losing going from 1300 watts to 650. 73, Scott, N9AA On 5/12/13 9:05 AM, Bill wrote: Thanks to all who answered. [Elecraft] KPA500 voltage tap question
Hello, all... I've just finished assembling my KPA500 and have a question about selecting the correct tap wire to set the operating voltage. My 220v line reads 231v no load, so I selected the yellow tap. The amp no load voltage is 71.7v. The transmitting voltage is 58v DC which is marginally low. If I select the red tap then I expect I'll be marginally high. If my choice is between marginally low and marginally high, which is the better choice? Thanks for comments. [Elecraft] KPA500 pounded--fan question
Dear Gang: I have been pounding my KPA500 on 6m WSJT meteor scatter and love it (this is 30 sec rx, 30 sec TX full power for hours). Here is my question for you RF engineers. I have been testing the fan settings. Here is what I get for the peak PA temp at different settings. NOR = 65, 3 = 65, 4 = 61, 5 = 55, 6 = 52 degrees peak PA temp. These are all stablized numbers. One of the most charming attributes of the KPA500 is its SILENCE. I hardly ever hear it when I use it on CW at NOR fan setting. So, will I prolong the life of my PA transistors with a higher fan setting in this application? If the PA sensor is reading 65 degrees, the actual device temperature has got to be higher. Is the higher fan speed and increased noise worth it? Or should I leave it on NOR. I'll do it! Just send me a KPA500 and I am good to go! OK, so far I get the first pad to have a characteristic impedance of 70 ohms and an attenuation of 2.5 dB. I need help on the second one as it is an impedance converter also. [Elecraft] KPA500 carrying case question
I would take one to match the K3 bag I got from you. Of course I'd like the amp first ;-) John K2QY __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 carrying case question
Rose, I'll buy one when I get the amp. However, because my SGC-230 autotuner can't handle the power, I probably won't buy the amp until Elecraft releases the new autotuner and I have one of those. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 carrying case question
Hi Duane, No, the KPA500 isn't in production that I'm aware of, but will be soon. I'm just getting prepared. I've already made a dust cover for one of the beta testers, and have a number of responses to my question that indicate plans to purchase dust covers and/or carrying cases by future KPA500 purchasers. 73!
