Re: [Elecraft] Circuit Simulation Software

2004-11-18 Thread John Magliacane
Hi Howard.

I am looking for software (preferably Linux, open source) to model electronic
circuitry. My primary interest is educational. I want to use the software
to design and investigate circuits to better understand how they work. I may
do a little design, as well. Does anyone have suggestions?

Yes. How about ng-spice (Next Generation SPICE)?

   http://ngspice.sourceforge.net/

It's still a work-in-progress, but I've been able to get some
meaningful simulations out of it under Linux.

I have also found the following guides:

   http://www.ibiblio.org/obp/electricCircuits/Ref/REF_7.html

   http://newton.ex.ac.uk/teaching/CDHW/Electronics2/userguide/sec4.html

very useful in running SPICE and in creating SPICE circuit files.

Probably your most accessible open source/linux code will be SPICE3.
You might be able to find an RPM or apt-get-able binary somewhere, or you
can pull the sources down from Berserkely.

http://infopad.eecs.berkeley.edu/~icdesign/SPICE/

ftp://ic.eecs.berkeley.edu/pub/Spice3/

On FreeBSD you can get this going just by cd /usr/ports/cad/spice; make
install, but that probably won't help you.

For schematic capture you might want to look at gEDA (gschem, gnetlist and
other tools):
http://www.geda.seul.org

I've used gschem and gnetlist a little. They're not as easy to use as some of
the commercial tools, but you can do quite a lot with them.

There's another circuit simulator out there for linux and other platforms, but
it's not yet open sourced and available only by special licensing. Hope to be
able to say something different in a few months.

Hi Howard,

A very good circuit simulation program is Top Spice which you can get at:
http://www.penzar.com/

The free demo version (no time limit) is quite useful. I use it all the
time.
The program is user friendly and the online help that comes with it is good.
There are a lot of circuit models with it and
you can get more from various semiconductor manufacturers.

Heh. I use SPICE, and I'm sure by now that there's a nice front-end for
the thing. It's old and crusty and ran on IBMs when I first started
using it. Used it to model CMOS timing the last time I had an EE job.

For a lot leetnix software, you can check freshmeat.net, part of the
OSTG (Open Source Technology Group?) like slashdot.org, etc.
