Re: [Elecraft] Dayton Dropoff

2017-05-15 Thread Scott Manthe
The question was asked without any expectation that Elecraft could/would
do this and no criticism was offered when Eric said they couldn't.

The unfortunate thing about the Internet is that there are people who've
apparently forgotten what it means to be polite and who feel the need to
offer a criticism on almost any question, no matter how innocent, or
every suggestion, no matter how well meaning.

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton Dropoff

2017-05-15 Thread Don Wilhelm
Despite that being Elecraft policy, if anyone has a K2, K1, KX1 or
XVseries transverter that is to be sent to me for repair, you can hand
it to me *personally* at the Elecraft booth (do not leave it at the
booth with anyone else).

If I am away from the booth, come back in an hour or so.

I will be driving from Dayton back to Wake Forest, NC, so a few extra
packages will not be any problem.

Be certain you have the service form filled out and packed with your gear.
Please put it in a box for easier handling or stacking. Pack it so it
does not move inside the box.

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton Dropoff

2017-05-15 Thread G4GNX

Hi Eric.

I'm sure there's no need to apologise, but actually it's Scott (the OP)
who wanted to transport a rig, not me.

My comment was merely to illustrate that Scott's request was unlikely to
be fulfilled and certainly was not a complaint.

I fully accept your reasons for not transporting customers' goods to and
from Dayton and I'm quite happy with the current arrangement I have for
collecting my Elecraft order.

On my own behalf, thank you for your attention, which is one of the
reasons I'm glad that I use Elecraft products.

Subject: [Elecraft] Dayton Dropoff

Hello to the list,
I'm getting ready to send my K3 off to Elecraft for some updates. Does
anyone know if it would be possible for me to drop the radio off to them
at Dayton, saving $50 shipping? The better question might be has anyone
actually done this?

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton Dropoff

2017-05-15 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Alan,

I apologize, but we are unable to receive products for service at the show. In
addition to the chance for loss or damage to your radio there in the commotion
of the show, we're maxed out just keeping up with the regular show sales and
demos. We are also limited in what we can hand carry back with us on the plane
to CA.

Also, anyone planning a service return needs to first contact our sales or
support group and have them issue you a 'return service authorization' (RSA)
form and number along with shipping info to the factory etc. That's the only way
we can guarantee that we will be able receive it properly to track it, handle it
properly, get it completed quickly and back to you. (I apologize if you have
already done that step :-)

If you are hand carrying it with you from the U.K., one solution might be to
post it via UPS to us from a local UPS store' in Dayton. There are a number of
these there and also in some of the local office supply stores. Of course, make
sure to contact us first to get the RSA form and number.

I'm having parts shipped to a friend who will then deliver to another friend

Please don't do that to them!!! They have enough to deal with getting
tons of stuff to Ohio and back...

Ship it to them If you don't have the right packaging, then call and
ask them to sell you a new set of packing materials...

Thanks!

PS - I need to send my K3s in too, I think... but I will wait until
AFTER the Hamvention and send it direct.

Anyone who looks at the order page knows. It is $749, factory assembled. Not
available as a kit. ATU and battery options take it over $1000.

[Elecraft] Dayton summary

2014-05-21 Thread Howard Hoyt

Hi all,

I appreciate meeting everyone who stopped by the QRPworks booth to talk
with me, Steve and Shel! It was quite a busy show from a floor traffic
perspective.

It was also quite a show from a cell phone system perspective: the cell
service was very intermittent (at least ATT was) which wreaked havoc
with my ability to process and annotate PayPal payments from customers.
This leads me to my main reason for posting today:

Everyone who ordered a Kx31 Heatsink Kit after we sold out, please
contact me with their current status if you have not received an email
from me confirming shipment. Credit card companies will not reveal
their customer info to PayPal, and since some transactions aborted due
to cell dropouts, I need to make sure everyone's order is correctly
processed ASAP.

Thank you, and sorry to use list BW!

Cheers,

Howard Hoyt - WA4PSC

There's plenty of rooms in Dayton in the $50 to $80 range. It's not like it

It depends on how far out you are willing to stay. Go to Centerville,
Kettering, Beavercreek, or Troy, and you can find rooms with no
reservation. You may have a 15-20 minute drive to the Arena, but that
does not seem too far to me, most guys commute longer than that to work
in many cases. I never make a reservation, just go. It is another
story if you want to stay within a block of Hara Arena.

Just MY take.

Phil,

My choice for parking at Dayton is to park at Salem Mall (free) and take
the bus to Hara arena - bus tickets for the entire event are $8 per
person and can be purchased at the parking lot.

There is parking near Hara arena for those who would not mind paying a
higher price. I recall the rates are around $10 per day.

Glad you found your rooms. Some of my Chicago buddies stay in
Miamisburg, about 10 miies S of Dayton, where I worked for Drake in the
60's.

K3LR, who runs Contest University (CTU), told me that he buys the entire
Crowne Plaza for his attendees. That's not quite true -- the Hamvention
people buy some rooms, and I have one of them. The Crowne Plaza is
significant, because that's where the various dinners (with really lousy
food) are held, and more important, where CTU and the many DX and
Contesting Club suites are located. Those suites run well into the early
hours, and are one of the major reasons I go to Dayton.

BTW -- I still have a 2-bed room in the Crowne Plaza available to share.

[Elecraft] Dayton Room

2014-05-07 Thread Jim Brown
I usually share a room with NI6T, but he can't make it this year, so
I've taken over his room, and I need someone to share it. I'm checking
in Wednesday night, out Sunday morning. I'm a non-smoker.

[Elecraft] Dayton thanks

2013-05-21 Thread Sam Jewell
I would like to add my thanks to that of others, on here, to the Dayton
Elecraft booth staff and volunteers. Thank you. They were very busy every time
I visited or passed the booth.

I placed an order by e-mail for a couple of spare parts for my K3 ( I can
confirm the K3 doesn't like more than 15v - it was accidental!). Madelyn
managed to get the parts to the team leaving for Dayton, just before they left.
$5 wasn't too much trouble. I was impressed by this, I have to say.
It did result in me spending a lot more than that on other 'K3 extras' at the
booth!

I thoroughly enjoyed my Dayton visit (8th time). Got home about 5am Monday
morning, UK time.

[Elecraft] Dayton

2013-05-20 Thread kl7uw
We arrived home at 2:30am after traveling 16-hours, yesterday. It took us
5-hours
by road to drive from Dayton Saturday evening to Detroit airport (motel). WE
were
delayed about an hour in Minneapolis when rain shutdown the airport (no
tornado's).

Janet stated that after boiling in the sun all day Friday and drowning in the
downpour Saturday morning I could leave her home next time.

80+ temps with 90% humidity is too much for us northerners. Nice sunny 43 and
30%
here at home, today.

I visited the Elecraft booth twice, once near noon Friday, and again on
Saturday.
They were busy! I was with Sam-G4DDK who had pre-ordered parts for his K3 so
got
to watch the crowd and Elecraft action. I was told there were no hats left,
but
it did appear that hats and KX3 buttons were given to purchasers at that point
in
time (or maybe sold- could not tell). Sam agreed we both traveled about 4,000
miles to get to Dayton. Apparently lots of sales as I saw many hats being worn.

Janet sold about a third of her Dubus books. WE were at the No. Texas Microwave
Society flea market space and that was not enough draw to sell all the books.
WE
do better at the VHF conferences. My amplifier got little notice and maybe five
brochures picked up. There is so much to look at at Dayton, it was swallowed
up in
the clutter. We're not likely to return to Dayton considering the expense of
travel. WE had to ship the remaining books to Alaska as there was no room in
our
bags.

I took my step-son Andy, KB0MLT, around the exhibits for two hours on Saturday
and
he picked up a dual-band HT he wanted. I showed him the Elecraft displays.
Looked
at the new KXPA100 (no price listed). My only purchase was a Peet wx station
(around the corner from the Elecraft booth).

We had fun and my wife and I enjoyed the time spent with her son and wife. We
spent four days in MI before Dayton visiting my sisters and mom, who is in
assisted
living, but glad to be home. Back to work, tomorrow.

73, Ed - KL7UW
Also ran into many VHF, mw and eme friends.

[Elecraft] Dayton Discounts - End of Story!

2013-05-18 Thread Peter Hedberg
Okay I published a rant when maybe I should have thought it through a little
bit beforehand. It seems there are a lot of very strong Elecraft supporters
as well as a lot of frugal hams. I admire a company who gets the customer
service thing right and it's obvious from many of your comments Elecraft has
done just that. Since my rant I've have a chance to find that out for
myself. Friday afternoon I called to place my order with Howard their
customer support go to guy. He's the perfect customer support person. He
didn't rush me, answered my questions and made feel like I was the most
important person he had talked to all day. That's the sign of a quality
company and as some of you pointed out that's worth a lot more than a
Dayton Discount. As one of my K3 owner friends put it, I probably spend
more on Brats and Beer when we go to Dayton then I would have saved.

The following is from this week's engineering and design newsletter about
cheap hams. (great timing) There is a short commercial at the beginning.

Is anyone at Dayton that can tell me what the K3 Dayton special is? Ready
to purchase one but the factory didn't know what the special was and won't
take my order and said I had to be at Dayton to get the special. I go to
Dayton every other year and this is my off year. I guess I should have
bought it at Visalia!

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton show specials

2013-05-17 Thread Wayne Burdick
Howard wrote:

We just can't give you the Dayton Special unless you are there.

I'd like to expand on this a bit.

We've been doing show specials at trade shows for many years, Dayton
included. These small discounts are intended to create some excitement among
attendees, hopefully resulting in more people stopping by to kick the tires on
new and existing products. Also, to be frank, these sales incentives help us
cover the very high costs of attending shows. We ship hundreds of pounds of
Elecraft products to Dayton in order to satisfy on-site demand, and we always
hope we don't have to send a lot of it back -- at equally high shipping rates.

[Elecraft] Dayton 2013

2013-01-10 Thread Edward R Cole
Just a note we have booked a trip to Dayton this year and will be
there on Friday Saturday. I will be sharing the flea market
(outside) space with Kent, WA5VJB and Lloyd, NE8I. The space is
mainly to offer parts to microwave hams but I will have a prototype
140w HF amp to demo and my wife, Janet, will be offering Techniks-12
from Dubus Magazine. Janet is their North American representative.

I will be using my KX3 for the amplifier demo. I do not have the
space number, yet, but hope many Elecraft friends will stop by for a
chat! We hope to stop by the Elecraft table during the
convention. Look for the tall guy wearing a black cap with gold
lettering KL7UW.

Actually, a microwaved ham isn't bad as long as it's allowed to brown in
a hot oven afterward. This is especially important if one is using a glaze.

[Elecraft] Dayton observation and learning about equipment

2012-05-21 Thread goldtr8

I have only been a licence's ham for slightly over 2 years and I have
learned a lot of lessons.

One of these lessons is you have to pay for quality in your gear. I
looked as stuff that I did not purchase in my recent past as I did not
really understand the true differences in equipment I have since
determined that I did not get the best bang for my buck.

I spent a lot of time looking at amps and tuners this weekend as I want
to take my power cube and put it in the jeep where it belongs.

Anyway long story short after spending a lot of time with Lyle talking
about the new elecraft amp and future tuner I was really impressed with
the total integration of the package (plus I received a great NB
lesson). I have determined that I have a lot of options on where to
spend my money in the future and this time I will only spend it on stuff
that has quality workmanship and design.

So I want to say thanks to the elecraft team for a great product and I
will save up again and get a quality amp and tuner and it will surely
match the K3.

I only wish I could have ordered my stuff at Dayton this year, but alas
a cracked tooth and root canal has tapped my savings for additional toys
in the shack.

Cheers
Don

[Elecraft] Dayton Booth Help

2012-05-14 Thread Lisa Jones - Elecraft Sales
Count Down to Dayton- it is here again- already!

We could definitely use some help from our Elecrft enthusiasts in the
booth at Dayton this year.

Any knowledge of our products is helpful as the questions and interests
are wide and varied.

Our location has changed. Just across the aisle from previous years and
out from under the leaky roof- hopefully!

Booths 181-184.

If you are interested in helping out, please email me directly,
l...@elecraft.com. A specific time that you can commit to would really
help us schedule throughout the weekend.

1-2 hour blocks of time work best. You can email me a couple of times
that would work for you and I'll confirm the time.

If you can fit us in between the flea market, forums and checking out
the other booths, let me know.

I will be traveling on Wednesday, so will not be able to answer
Wednesday emails until late in the day.

Thank you in advance your for your help and support! It is truly
appreciated.

Lisa

[Elecraft] Dayton

2011-05-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
In less than 24 hours I will be on my way to FDIM and Dayton.
I will see some of you there, and will have a great time.
I will not be taking my email with me this year. I will sort through it
all after I get back.
Let's get together at the FDIM hotel and have a Foster beer Thursday
evening just before the Build-A-Thon in memory of Hank Kohl K8DD (SK),
he will be missed.

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton purchase... K2!

2010-05-18 Thread 2rGarry

Good choice.

NO noise blanker here and none needed so I can't help with that. The K2 has
one of the quietest receivers I have used and I like it.

I have the 160 module and the ssb module and that's it. I mainly use mine
for cw so the ssb is not a particularly needed item but from time to time I
do get on the air with my 10-12 watt phone signal. The auto tuner might be
nice depending on what type of antennas you use. Might make that my next
purchase since I use open wire feed line to an all-band wire antenna.

[Elecraft] Dayton purchase... K2!

2010-05-17 Thread steve d
Well between the KX1 and K2 I ended up with the K2. I talked with two friends
that have built them. Overall I think the K2 will get more use and suit my
general operating better than the KX1 would. That is not to discount the fact
that the KX1 is a great rig and I woudl enjoy using it, the K2 is a more
versatile rig in my book. Combined with an amp I don't think it can be beat in
the performance/versatility categories.

I had one held for me but it was sold so they are going to ship one out to me
soon - hopefully it will go out today. I got the K2, 160 kit, and the SSB kit.
I wasn't too sure about the noise blanker. I can add that later. What say all?
Needed/not needed?

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton purchase... K2!

2010-05-17 Thread lstavenhagen

The noise blanker was the first module I added to my K2. IMO, it's almost
required especially if you're going to use it at the home QTH at all where
there's any line noise. I have a 10 to 20db over line noise problem here at
night so I have to have a NB in all my rigs.

It's a very easy build, an hour or two in an evening overall, and cheap too.

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton purchase - KX1 or K2?

2010-05-13 Thread John W2XS

They are both really FB rigs, but the K2 is the best overall QRP radio out
there IMHO. Our local QRP club has outings at the state park, and it is so
nice to have access to all bands. I like to start at 10m and work my way
down until I find activity. 17m has turned into one of my favorite bands,
and there has been some activity on 12m. With the built-in tuner and
battery, all that is needed externally is the paddle and an antenna. The KX1
is small, but the K2 is small enough to be easy to carry for portable use. I
use an old padded camcorder case which contains enough room for the K2, the
Paddlette PK1 paddle (and a spare), a balun, some tools, adaptors, a
notebook for logging, and a small power supply when AC is available.
Another bag is used for the antenna stuff.

Besides the state park, I operate the K2 from a weekend retreat house on AC
power and that has worked out FB too. 10W has proven to be enough power for
enjoyable world-wide QSOs on 40m through 10m with a 40m inverted V fed with
twinlead.

[Elecraft] Dayton purchase - KX1 or K2?

2010-05-12 Thread steve d
Well this is the question: get a KX1 or a K2 at Dayton?

I had set my mind on a KX1. I have used one before and was very surprised with
the performance over all my other HF radios. However, the more I think about it
the more I think a K2 might be better.

One of my other large hobbies is backpacking. I usually take an FT-857D, 12Ah
SLA, and jumper dipole with me. This has provided a lot of fun sitting around
the camp fire on HF.

My ultimate goal, after experiencing the performance of the KX1, is to get a
receiver in the main shack that is that good. I would be happy with that good
but even better would be, well, even better!

The way I see the K2 is this: I can build it as a 15w rig with SSB for a
fantastic voice/cw portable radio that is good on batteries (better than my
FT-857D in the field). Batteries can even go inside the case - decreasing my
pack bulk over my current setup with the FT-857D and battery. I can add a 100w
amp for the shack and traveling where power isn't an issue. Then I wouldn't be
lacking any performance over my other HF radios (on the TX side, any way you
slice it the RX side will be 100 times better).

The KX1 is a fantastic and very fun radio to operate, but it is limited to 4
bands and CW only (TX). It is extremely compact and light though, which
there just aren't any other radios out there that touch this class of
performance in such a size of package.

Decisions decisions... The K2 also costs more - I will have over 3x the price
of a KX1 in it, although I can spread it out a bit after the initial burn HIHI.
It will be roughly $900 for the K2, K160RX, and KSB2 then $400 for the KX1.
That is, of course, unless there is a big Dayton discount (unlikely I think).

Any thoughts from the crowd here?

Steve, KC8QVO

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton purchase - KX1 or K2?

2010-05-12 Thread The Smiths

I find that the KX1 fits very nicely in a small bag for travel. Also, the way
the antenna tuner matches pretty much anything thrown up into a tree (one side)
and the other just laying on the ground is very impressive.

If you want SSB I guess your decision has already been made. As for me, I'm
all CW, so when I travel I borrow my friends KX1, until I get a chance to buy
and build my own. Last time I went to the Philippines I was able to work over
12 countries including Russia all on 2 watts and a 28 foot long piece of wire
connected to a fishing weight that I just tossed up into a coconut tree!
That's plenty good enough for me!

[Elecraft] Dayton Elecraft Booth Help

2010-05-11 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
If you have the urge to meet other Elecraft owners or to espouse to
potential owners at Dayton, please email me or stop by the booth at the
show and we'll sign you up! (We are at booths 196, 197, 198.) Wayne and
I are grateful for any help we can get to save our voices from total
collapse ;-) Even an hour or two is a big help.

Plus you get to hang out with and meet lots of Elecraft folks, both
customers and members of our engineering team. In addition to Wayne and
myself, we'll have the following Elecraft engineers at the booth:

Brian, W6FVI (W2 Design, P3 project mgr.)

[Elecraft] Dayton

2010-05-11 Thread Jim Brown
I'm leaving for Chicago in the morning, and will be off email
until I return. My Chicago buddies are monitoring 442.625,
114.8 Hz, so I will too. I hope to see many friends there. One
of my hangs will probably be the CWOps booth.

73,

Jim K9YC
