[Elecraft] Desoldering Tool Recommendations?

2008-05-21 Thread Tom Childers, N5GE
I would like to get a reliable, but not so expensive desoldering gun/station.

Does any one have a recommendation or two?

Tom,

I would strongly recommend a Hakko 808. Great tool! It requires a little bit
of regular maintenance (cleaning/filter changes), but is well worth the
effort. Google it and reade some of the things on the web about it.

Tom,

One more thing on the Hakko 808. I would strongly recommend buying the stand
to hold it. It does get hot and the stand is well worth the price. I drilled
a couple of screws in the stand and screwed it to my bench top. I knocked it
over twice and do not want it to happen again.

RE: [Elecraft] Desoldering Tool Recommendations?

2008-05-21 Thread Bruce McLaughlin
I highly second the recommendation for the Hakk0 808. I had to remove a 16
or 20 pin IC and frankly, I thought it would probably be a goner and I would
be lucky if the circuit board didn't follow suit. After a number of years
struggling with desoldering braid and various suction bulb devices I was not
optimistic. Much to my amazement the IC came out without a hitch. It was
in perfect condition as was the circuit board which was also clean as a
whistle with no residual solder left in any of the holes. I thought that
was a pretty good test of its effectiveness.

[Elecraft] Desoldering tool?

2006-11-14 Thread Darwin, Keith
Sometime in the past, someone posted a link to someplace where a $30
solder sucker soldering iron was being sold. IIRC, it was a pencil iron
with a good sucking device attached. Anyone have the link?

Or, can you guys recommend a good yet inexpensive tool for doing rework?
I'm not interested in spending any serious money on such a tool since I
can always use the pro vacuum gear here at work.

It's the Solder Popper model 12-2157 from GC Tools. It runs in the $36.00
range depending upon retailer.

I've used it on my K2 kit and found by wetting the tip with solder for
good heat transfer the unit seems to work well enough. It maybe doesn't
work quite as well as the Hakko 808 but for the casual builder it should
be sufficient. I was even able to tin toroid leads with it with a little
practice. The unit comes apart easily for cleaning and/or maintenance.

Re: [Elecraft] Desoldering tool?

2006-11-14 Thread Doug Person
The Hakko 808 is a superb tool. If you plan to do a lot of building and
especially modifying - it is a worthwhile investment. Saves a lot of
wear and tear on the boards and greatly reduces your own stress when
attempting to pry loose an IC. It is expensive, but consider your
monetary investment in the kits you build and the time you spend
building them. I have the Solder Popper as well. It works. But the
Hakko is __considerably__ better.

tool or just bring the stuff here to work ...

Thanks!
