This may be connected with the strike that is supposed to
start today. More info I cannot speculate on (because I don't
  know it all). It's AT&T Security's problem.

Meanwhile I use my K2 as a happy camper!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft's website down? I keep getting

2009-04-09 Thread Jack Brindle
Not only that, but the major electric feeders are also run out in the
open! Long-distance transmission lines, whether they be for
communications, power transfer or car/truck/train throughways are
necessarily run through non-secure areas, in most cases in the open.
It would be extremely impractical to do otherwise, and would make the
services prohibitively expensive.

The problem with the six fiber cables (four in south San Jose, two in
San Mateo) appear to be deliberate acts of sabotage, meant to cause
harm. They were perpetrated by someone who knew what they were doing.
It would be next to impossible to secure against such an act,
especially since it may be (looks like, and is reported as being) an
inside job.

At this point the local news continues to report that the outage is
ongoing with no estimate as to when repairs will be completed. They
are also reporting that just about everything to do with the two cuts
are under criminal investigation. Let's hope that the folks in Aptos
come back on line very soon.

So the communications capabilities for a few million people are routed through
some unattended vaults in public places and there's no security system to alert
someone when one of the vaults is opened.

It's not clear to me who is the most dangerous: the execs responsible for

The word here in Silicon Valley is that Verizon had a major fiber cable break.
It has taken out pretty much all their communications in the south valley down
into Monterrey. This includes telphone, cell phones, internets, and their other
communications. No word on when it will be repaired. Meanwhile, the other half
of the valley, on ATT, continues right along. We got lucky this time, next time
it could be us...

I have no idea of the cause, of course but as a retired utility
communications tech I'll tell you that anything is possible and
sooner-or-later will happen. A utility simply can't cover every
possible uh-oh.

My utility ... like most ... uses an extensive microwave system
for control of the largest utility in the US (In square miles served)
and there are extensive "backups and alternatives. This being
said, an earthquake that would disturb rowers and dish alignment
would be a major disaster. Ditto for a large forest fire. The dense
smoke can cause HV lines to flash over, causing them to "trip out",
and can cause very wide-spread outages.

Lots can and does happen.

I'm in Santa Cruz, and things like telephones (landlines), cell
phones, and DSL is down for a lot of people. Even 911 service (!).

Sigh. So much for redundancy on the part of the backbone providers, eh?

This is probably 8 days too late, but the site may be down because of
a whole lot of new products being announced. Apple takes it's site
down while updating for new products. Elecraft is following he same
strategy. Look for a spectrum display that beats the one built into
ICOM7800 in responsiveness and sensitivity, the new amplifiers 800 and
1500W, gps disciplined oscillators, and more.

Just wait a bit...
