[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2024-07-21 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
Please join us on 3803kHz plus (not minus) QRM (see the Netlogger
discussion, below), 9PM ET Sunday (0100Z Monday). Note that the net
stays on the same local time, when we switch back and forth to/from
Daylight time, so the UTC time changes, but not the local time.

As daylight persists more into the evening, we may find it more
difficult to conduct the net at its regular time. For the time being,
let's keep it at 9PM ET, as that is getting late on a 'school night' for
a lot of folks, as it is.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE.

The group that meets on 3803 kHz before us has been wrapping up
operations promptly at or before 9PM ET. There is also another group
that normally comes on at 10PM ET, so we need to make sure to wrap up
operations by 10PM ET. If any stations wish to continue past that time,
please QSY to a clear frequency.

If you are a US General class licensee, please ensure that your dial is
accurately calibrated and that your transmitter/amplifier combination is
clean and free of splatter, since we will be operating LSB within 3 kHz
of the lower band edge of the 80M US General class band.

I'm using Netlogger, so if you go to netlogger.org and look for the 80M
Elecraft SSB Net, you will be able to see the exact frequency we've
settled on for the evening. If we find 3803 kHz busy, we will move UP
the band a few kHz, so we can stay in the 80M US General class band.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

discussion, below), 9PM ET Sunday (0100Z Monday).

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE.

We are in the midst of a G4 geomagnetic storm, and the K index is 8, so
there is a LOT of D layer absorption on the low bands. Hopefully some
of this will dissipate by this evening's net.

The group that meets on 3803 kHz before us has been wrapping up
operations promptly at or before 9PM ET. They are aware of our net that
follows them at 9PM ET, and have made an effort to accommodate us, and
sometimes one or more of them listen in on our net, so I've made a point
of thanking them for their courtesy. Likewise, I've become aware that

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2024-03-10 Thread Dave New, N8SBE

let's keep it at 9PM ET, as that is getting late on a 'school night' for
a lot of folks, as it is.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE.

After some discussion, we've decided to try moving from 3806 kHz to 3803
kHz. The past few weeks there has been some sort of noise heard on 3806
kHz by East coast stations, making it difficult to hear net control.
The group that meets on 3803 kHz has been wrapping up operations
promptly at 9pm ET (so far), so it should be clear for our use then.
I'll keep a watch to see if the net that normally occupies 3803 kHz the
hour before our time stays with local time, or moves with the change to
daylight saving time. If they move their local time, it will place them
on top of our 9PM ET net, so we'll need to deal with that if it occurs.
It's typical for 80M nets to use local time, as they tend to be regional
in nature, not nation- or world-wide.

If you are a US General class licensee, please ensure that your dial is
accurately calibrated and that your transmitter/amplifier combination is
clean and free of splatter, since we will be operating LSB within 3 kHz

Please join us on 3806kHz (NOTE THE NEW FREQUENCY WHICH MOVES US INTO
THE GENERAL CLASS BAND)plus or minus QRM (see the Netlogger discussion,
below), 9PM ET Sunday (0200Z Monday). Note that the net stays on the
same local time, when we switch back and forth to/from Daylight time, so
the UTC time changes, but not the local time.

Now that we have moved into Standard time and have shorter daylight
hours, 80M should be stronger now during the winter.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE.

I'm using Netlogger, so if you go to netlogger.org and look for the 80M
Elecraft SSB Net, you will be able to see the exact frequency we've
settled on for the evening. If we find 3806 kHz busy, we will move UP
the band a few kHz, so we can stay in the 80M US General class band.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

2023-12-10 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
I forgot to mention that I'm using Netlogger, so if you are a Netlogger
user, you can find the net under "80M Elecraft SSB Net" when I create
the net starting usually 15 minutes before net time, looking for early
check ins.

For more information on Netlogger, visit https://netlogger.org/

this weekend, so operating portable barefoot (100W) with my K4D, and
using my Eagle One vertical mounted on the back of the 5th wheel for an
antenna. So it will be a toss-up if anyone can hear me this evening.
Eric, WB9JNZ had agreed to be my backup, so hopefully between the two of
us, we'll be able to pull you in.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2023-06-04 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
Please join us on 3784 kHz (NOTE THE NEW FREQUENCY), 9PM ET Sunday
(0100Z Monday). Note that the net stays on the same local time, when we
switch back and forth to/from Daylight time, so the UTC time changes,
but not the local time.

Now that we have moved into Daylight time and have longer daylight
hours, 80M may not be as strong as during the winter.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE, and for the first time,
I'll be using my new K4D. I hooked it up to my KPA500 this afternoon,
so I should have as good a signal as I can get, considering band
conditions, etc.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

We are currently in the throes of a class G4 geomagnetic storm.
Hopefully most of it will be over by the net tonight. It certainly
trashed the 20M and 40M SSB nets earlier today. I'm listening to 40M
recovering now, with short skip starting to come back in for the MI
ARPSC SSB Net, so keep your fingers crossed.

In particular, since the KX1 doesn't do SSB, seems like you would have
much better luck checking into one of the CW nets. See the CW Net

Our power came back after about 92 hours, just short of the required 96
hours for DTE to send us $35 for our trouble. :-)
This week, we received 8 inches of wet, heavy snow on Friday evening,
which ended up breaking several branches out of an old cedar tree that
hangs over the side walk. By today, Sunday, the temperature has been
about 50 degrees and the snow is melting fast.

We are on day 4 of being on generator power, since SE Michigan received
about .7 inches of ice this past Wednesday evening. By 7pm local time
(EST) we saw several bright flashes in the block across from us,
followed by several 'booms' and then "lights out". :-(. There are a lot
of old trees in this neighborhood, and a number of them came down, or at
least large pieces of them.
We had removed two large trees in our yard this past summer, to avoid
this scenario on our property. One of the trees was splitting down the
middle, and the other was threatening our garage. It is now Sunday
afternoon, and we noticed a half-dozen bucket trucks roll in to the
subdivision this morning, so (fingers crossed) maybe we'll be back on
commercial power by this evening's net.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

We had several days of above freezing temperatures and some sun, so the
snow is gone from the solar panels, and we had a couple of good days of
generation, here. The warmer temperatures are due this coming week,

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE.

We had frigid single-digit temperatures the last week, although we had a
lot of sun. Unfortunately, my solar panels were still covered in several
inches of snow, so I lost out on several good generation days. I could
get a roof snow rack from the local hardware store, but half of my
panels are on the upper story, where the rack won't reach, and the lower
story is partially shaded until local solar noon, so doesn't seem worth
the effort to clean off only the lower roof.

Looking ahead, we are going for a high of 39 today, and in the 40's and
maybe even the 50's over the next week. If nothing else, we should get
the snow off of the solar panels.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2023-01-29 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
Please join us on 3784 kHz (NOTE THE NEW FREQUENCY), 9PM ET Sunday
(0200Z Monday).

80M has been good at that time of the evening, with strong signals and
little QRN from thunderstorms these days.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE. We had about another
6-8 inches of snow in SE Michigan this week, so I got to really put the
new Ego snow blower to the test. The two 7.5Ah 56V batteries lasted
through a double-wide 30 ft. driveway and apron, and the front/side and
entry sidewalks on my corner lot, including clearing the area in front
of our mailbox, etc., so now I know how long this beast will run on a
single charge.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

73,

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE. I operated in the NAQP
CW contest yesterday, and found all bands 10M-80M open and full of CW
signals. Next will be the NAQP SSB contest. Hope the great propagation
holds out. SFI as we type this is 228 and the MUF and Boulder is over
30 MHz!

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

Your net control this week will be Dave, N8SBE. I've managed to fix my
remote antenna switch control cable issues, by temporarily bypassing the
switch. So now I'm directly connected to the ZS6BKW dipole and all the
intermittent connections have for now disappeared.

Hope to see you this evening on the net.

Was the net called? I was on-frequency between 8:55PM and 9:10PM, and
heard nothing but S3 band noise.

Your net control this week will be Eric, WB9JNZ (THANKS, Eric!)

Hope everyone is having a good Holiday period.

My station unexpectedly 'went off the air' a couple of evenings ago,
during the frigid temperatures and high winds here. It seems that the
fragile control line (4-wire interior phone line) going to my remote
antenna switch gave up the ghost. It will take a tower climb to replace
the cable, and that's not likely right now.

Thanks again to Eric for pinch-hitting and 73,

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2022-12-18 Thread Dave New, N8SBE

Please join us on 3775 kHz, 9PM ET Sunday (0200Z Monday).

80M has been good at that time of the evening, with strong signals and
little QRN from thunderstorms these days.

Your net control lives in Ann Arbor, MI. Today was mostly cloudy, and
26F, with about 1/2" of snow on the ground. We missed all the
excitement on the west side of the state, and the folks in northern
Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota, where the snowfall was measure
in feet, not inches.

We are just about ready for the upcoming holidays.

I've also been busy moving everything from a 10+ year-old Windows 10
laptop to a new Windows 11 laptop for my Photoshop activities
(photography is one of my other hobbies). Seems that Photoshop no
longer will support a GPU that hasn't had a driver update in over 3
years. The NVidia 750M chipset in my old laptop had gone out of
support, and there is no way to replace the GPU in that laptop. In any
event, Windows 10 will go out of support soon, and none of the computers
I have, have a TPM 2.0 chipset, so they couldn't be upgraded to Windows
11, either (yes, I know that there are ways to force an upgrade, but I
really didn't want to get into all that mess). So, the new laptop has
an i9 chipset and RTX 3060 GPU, so hopefully, I'll get another ten years
of use out of it, as well.

See you on 80M this evening and 73,

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2022-12-11 Thread Dave New, N8SBE

Please join us on 3775 kHz, 9PM ET Sunday (0200Z Monday).

80M has been good at that time of the evening, with strong signals and
little QRN from thunderstorms these days.

Your net control lives in Ann Arbor, MI. Today was mostly cloudy, and
39F. We put up the Christmas tree yesterday, so "it's starting to feel
a lot like Christmas" around here.

Plans are going ahead with re-doing the DIY mess that the previous owner
made attempting to bump out the kitchen and dining area on the back of
the house a couple of feet. When finished, we will have extended the
kitchen and dining area six feet, added a mud room, and added a nice
size deck on the back. The extra roof area will accommodate an
additional row of solar panels, and we'll be able to fill in the 'hole'
in the original array where a roof vent currently exists, bringing the
total complement to 20 panels. These panels all use Enphase IQ7+
microinverters which are RF-quiet. I've never detected any RF noise
from the array.

See you on 80M this evening and 73,

[Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement

2022-12-04 Thread Dave New, N8SBE

80M has been good at that time of the evening, with strong signals and

Your net control lives in Ann Arbor, MI. We had 50 mph gusts a few days
ago, and managed to get through it without any power failures, which is
a great deal better than in the recent couple of years. It seems that
DTE's pruning efforts are starting to pay off. Today was mostly sunny,
and 36F, good for the solar array, which peaked at about 2700W at
1100am. You can see my solar output graphs here:

https://pvoutput.org/intraday.jsp?id=93683=82720

I don't have consumption monitoring, so the usage columns will be all
zero. I do have DTE's Insight app on my smartphone, which shows my net
usage (we are on net billing, where DTE buys back my excess energy at
essentially half rate).

See you on 80M this evening and 73,

Your net control lives in Ann Arbor, MI, and I was planning last week to
(among other things) complete my online FEMA coursework to qualify for
the local RACES organization membership, but I managed to complete 3 of
the 5 required courses so far. I did manage to do a portable Winlink
exercise, using my KX2 at 5 watts on a Super Antenna on 40M and sending
my message through the RMS relay at W1AW.

See you on 80M this evening and 73,
