[Elecraft] Handheld Mic Advice

2012-03-07 Thread Joel Black
Looking for a good hand-held mic for the K3. I have heard all the
praises and accolades of the Yamaha CM-500 and I believe you; however, I
already have a pair of phenomenal headphones that I really like - the
Sony MDR-V6.

I operate mostly digital modes (PSK, Olivia, JT-65) and I'm getting
re-interested in CW. I check in two or three times during the week on a
75m state voice net and I call a MARS net twice per month.

If the MH-2 is a good mic, that's what I'll go with. I trust what the
Elecraft reflectors recommend.

Again, I have *no need* for the Yamaha CM-500. I realize that won't
stop some of you from mentioning it, but I tried.

Joel,

Well since you specified a hand-held microphone, no one should mention
the CM500 since it is a headset (headphone and boom microphone
combination). I can agree that the Sony MDR series are headphones that
are very good and comfortable.

I would strongly recommend the MH2 (note, there are no 'dashes' in
Elecraft equipment designations except for the N-Gen and the 2T-Gen
mini-modules).

Joel,

I have the MH2 and it is an excellent mic. I also have the CM500 but use that
primarily with CW headphone use but also use it with VOX if I am in some long
winded SSB QSOs.

2012-03-07 Thread Tony Morgan
I highly recommend the MH2.
The only thing I'm not fond of is the stiff coil cord.
But I don't think you'll be sorry.
I bought mine used and am very happy with it.

2012-03-07 Thread Jim Brown

The best answer is that almost any decent mic will work VERY well with
the K3 because the K3 is so flexible. The only type of mic that WON'T
work with a K3 is a professional balanced electret mic. Pro dynamics
work fine, and so do virtually all ham mics and communications mics.

BTW -- I'm one of those who likes the CM500. I own two MDR7506s (same as
the MDR-V6), and I no longer use them in the ham shack because the CM500
makes it so easy, and because the CM500 phones sound very good and are
very comfortable. The only thing I use a hand mic for is my VHF/UHF FM
rig.

If you have a mic for another ham rig that you no longer use, consider
re-wiring the plug to fit the K3.

Three K3 features combine to provide this flexibility. First, switchable
bias. Second, variable mic gain. Third, very flexible TXEQ that matches
the combination of the response of the mic with the sound of your
voice. BTW -- I'm a serious audio guy, so consider this the advice of
someone who is very picky about audio. :)
