Re: [Elecraft] Icom 735 inquiry

2006-10-10 Thread Fred (FL)
With my last IC-735, I recall I did inquire to ICOM
AMERICA, State of Washington, about their replacing
the RAM MEMORY BATTERY in my IC-735.

If I'm not mistaken, they said they no longer carry
it. But there are several outfits who sell memory
backup products, for the IC-735.

I forget now, but Icom's Service Dept. did tell
me what they could and could not fix on a IC-735.
There is also an issue with the IC-735's display
capacitors, a replacement need. I think Icom,
last year, said they could replace those.

I think the brunt of IC-735's were built in the mid
to later 80's. So kind of aging a bit now.

For the money, a nice little rig, and GC receive
too.

RE: [Elecraft] Icom 735 inquiry

2006-10-10 Thread Darwin, Keith
I had an IC735. On paper it sure looked like a great rig. In practice
I found the sound of the rig to be irritating. Background noise was
harsh and spiky for lack of a better word. Recovered audio left me
wanting to turn the rig off. GC receive, which I though would be a
great thing, turned out to be something I almost never used.

I tried to like it, really. I had wanted one for years but found
quickly after owning one that it was not gonna hold my interest.

As soon as the K2 was up running, the 735 went up for sale. I'm sure
there a lot of happy IC-735 owners out there (notice how I've spelled it
3 different ways in this post? :-) but I'm not one of them.

YMMV

[Elecraft] Icom 735 inquiry

2006-10-09 Thread rlpend
This radio, which I purchased new and have not modified, worked fine
six months ago. Recently I discovered that it receives normally on all
bands, the LCD functions normally, and the CW sidetone is OK , but it
will transmit only on AM and FM. On SSB and CW the power output meter
doesn't show power out and my field strength meter needle doesn't
move. However the fan does operate and the Icom power supply becomes
slightly warm when I attempt to transmit into the dummy load in these
latter two modes. This state of affairs is the same into the antenna
(when I discovered the problem) and into a dummy load. Years ago Icom
replace the power transistors when it would not transmit, but I believe
this failure was on all modes.

Any ideas where to look for the problem?

I am not an engineer or electronics technician, but have built many
kits. Any suggestions about what I can try before sending it away would
be appreciated.

One of the issues with ham equipment of recent times, is does it have a
backup battery that might be failing after 7 or more years? That is one of
the first things that comes to mind as our equipment ages.
