When switching to Data/Packet be sure the radio RX BW is 2.7 kHz. The BW info is stored by mode in the radio. On WSJT-X Wide Graph, set the Bin/Pixel value to 4. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 6/5/2023 9:58 AM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: Message: 1 Date: Wed, 31 May 2023 12:53:32 -0400 From: David Haines To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] JS8call Message-ID:<6147a9fa-5f90-edca-e8a0-5b8e7968c...@bates.edu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed After years of success with FT8 here's a puzzle I've never solved: For FT8 when I set WSJT-X radio settings to Data/Pkt, the WSJT-X waterfall display seems useless, with all the signals concentrated at the center of the waterfall. Re: [Elecraft] JS8call
Sounds like your audio bandpass is narrowed somehow. Check the low/high or width settings. I have never had that happen, but I can't remember the last time I made a non-digital Q on the KX3 so setting never get changed. Re: [Elecraft] JS8call
Thanks for the explanation Jim. The KX3 has a DATA A mode. When I selected the 7.078 frequency from the 40 meter band on the JS8cal drop down menu at the top of the screen, it would register that frequency. If I used LSB, then I couldn't enter any frequency. . But I am going to try with the DATA mode again, maybe with the Signalink. I also have to look up my sound card on my laptop. It will be a lot of trial and error, which is why I would think the Ham Radio manufacturers would have instructions for setting up a few utility software programs for their specific rigs. From my limited knowledge and almost total lack of experience, I would think that WinLink / RMS winlink and JS8Call would be mainstream now, along with a resurgent CW. From a promotional standpoint, including this how to set-up would be advantageous. In fact, my daughter always complains that she has "mic fright" and doesn't want to get her General license and go on SSB phone. JS8Call would be a good way to ease her beyond her tech license by showing her, "See? You don't even have to talk, you can just text!" Every 19 year old does that! 73s Karl AF5LQ On Monday, May 29, 2023 at 09:46:58 PM EDT, Jim Brown wrote: On 5/29/2023 6:09 PM, Ian Kahn wrote: > Clarification - they run DATA or USB. @Micahel, Thanks for your response. I have no experience with any other SDR. I just jumped headlong into JS8Call as I firgured (maybe mistakenly) that it was the best extension of all these programs. I have now expanded my research to the earlier SDR progarms. Some say that FT8 and JS8Call all run on upper side ban. Others say Data Mode. So maybe, I'll have to go back and look at WSJT-X. As of yet, I have no rig settings for anything. I was hoping to bypass this soup and plunbge headlong into JS8Call. Clarification - they run DATA or USB. I apologize for the omission in my first reply. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On Mon, May 29, 2023, 9:08 PM Ian Kahn wrote: > Karl, > > Just one correction for you - the WSJT-X modes, of which JS8Call is a > branch, all run upper side band, regardless of which band/frequency you're > using. > > 73 de, > > Ian, NV4C > > On Mon, May 29, 2023, 6:14 PM Karl W Hubbard via Elecraft < > elecraft@mailman.qth.net> wrote: > >> >> Is there an up-to-date source in the Elecraft community for the Elecraft >> KX3 on how to install/runJS8Call version 2.2.0 from scratch outthere? >> >> I have the standard KX3-PX3-KXPA100 set up with the latestfirm ware >> updates connected to my laptop with Windows 11 10thgeneration Intel >> processor etc. computervia the final RS232 outlet on the KPA100with the >> 3.5 mm and USB cable that has two lights a green and a red light onthe USB >> plug. >> >> I down loaded the latest version of JS8call, entered my callsign and the >> grid, but I keep getting a failure message “hamlib could notconnect to the >> rig.” >> >> I can not select from the menu the 7.078 frequency to post inthe upper >> left corner. >> >> There is no signal strength vertical bar indicator lightingup on the >> transmit window in the lower left of the computer screen. >> >> When I select mode on the KX3, do I select a data mode orkeep it on the >> LSB for the 40 meter band? >> >> The red transmit light on the KX3 does not illuminate when Itry to send a >> message from JS8Call. Re: [Elecraft] JS8call
Karl, Just one correction for you - the WSJT-X modes, of which JS8Call is a branch, all run upper side band, regardless of which band/frequency you're using. 73 de, Ian, NV4C On Mon, May 29, 2023, 6:14 PM Karl W Hubbard via Elecraft < elecraft@mailman.qth.net> wrote: > > Is there an up-to-date source in the Elecraft community for the Elecraft > KX3 on how to install/runJS8Call version 2.2.0 from scratch outthere? > > I have the standard KX3-PX3-KXPA100 set up with the latestfirm ware > updates connected to my laptop with Windows 11 10thgeneration Intel > processor etc. computervia the final RS232 outlet on the KPA100with the > 3.5 mm and USB cable that has two lights a green and a red light onthe USB > plug. > > I down loaded the latest version of JS8call, entered my callsign and the > grid, but I keep getting a failure message “hamlib could notconnect to the > rig.” > > I can not select from the menu the 7.078 frequency to post inthe upper > left corner. > > There is no signal strength vertical bar indicator lightingup on the > transmit window in the lower left of the computer screen. > > When I select mode on the KX3, do I select a data mode orkeep it on the > LSB for the 40 meter band? > > The red transmit light on the KX3 does not illuminate when Itry to send a > message from JS8Call. Re: [Elecraft] JS8call
Karl: I am in almost the same situation as you radiowise and have had similar trouble with JS8Call, but haven't pursued a solution. I also have a Signalink and don't like using it, but it didn't seem to make a difference withy JS8Call. (I've even been told it is a waste of money!) I assume you've been using ft8, which requires similar radio settings as I understand it. Let me know what you learn. I'm listening. david kc1dny in the woods of Maine On 5/29/2023 6:13 PM, Karl W Hubbard via Elecraft wrote: Is there an up-to-date source in the Elecraft community for the Elecraft KX3 on how to install/runJS8Call version 2.2.0 from scratch outthere? [Elecraft] JS8call
Is there an up-to-date source in the Elecraft community for the Elecraft KX3 on how to install/runJS8Call version 2.2.0 from scratch outthere? I have the standard KX3-PX3-KXPA100 set up with the latestfirm ware updates connected to my laptop with Windows 11 10thgeneration Intel processor etc. computervia the final RS232 outlet on the KPA100with the 3.5 mm and USB cable that has two lights a green and a red light onthe USB plug. I down loaded the latest version of JS8call, entered my callsign and the grid, but I keep getting a failure message “hamlib could notconnect to the rig.” I can not select from the menu the 7.078 frequency to post inthe upper left corner. There is no signal strength vertical bar indicator lightingup on the transmit window in the lower left of the computer screen. When I select mode on the KX3, do I select a data mode orkeep it on the LSB for the 40 meter band? The red transmit light on the KX3 does not illuminate when Itry to send a message from JS8Call. Is this dependent on a VOX setting? Test send on CAT always indicates red or failure to send. Do I need a Signalink soundcard to make this connection? Ihave one wired for the KX3 but really don’t want to use it as I already haveenough wires all over the place. I thought these modern high end computers alreadyhave a built in sound card. As a very frustrated owner of KX3s because of antenna and 100Wpower limitations, I had decided to try to try some QSO’s using FS8call.
