worked great for RIT control. I tried to use it to occasionally switch my
RX antenna in and out but then I was quickly reminded why I do not use this
function and instead use the RX ANT button on the radio. I have the F4
button programed so a quick press toggles the RX antenna and a long press
switches the radio to 40m. What happens on random occasions is tapping the
F4 button will switch the radio to 160m instead of toggling the RX antenna
input. It is really annoying to be running stations on 40m and then the
radio just jumps to another band. The QSO gets messed up and there is a risk
of losing the run frequency. Incidentally a long press of F8 is programmed
to switch the radio to 160 and that was definitely not accidently touched.
I am unsure of the firmware version. Is this a known problem? Is here a
cure?

[Elecraft] K-POD LED command not working

2022-11-27 Thread Mike Dodd
I have a new K-POD connected to a K4D, and several macros assigned to
switchesF1-F8 operate correctly. Now I want to turn LED 4 on and off.
The K-POD user manual says:

"...LED 4 is always under user control. The following commands are used:
KPLED4ON; turns LED 4 on KPLED4OFF; turns led 4 off."

I assigned KPLED4ON; to a K-POD switch, but it does not turn on LED4. I
later assigned KPLED4ON; to a K4 function, and it too does not turn on LED4.

Does anyone know if KPLED4ON; is actually implemented in the K-POD?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K-Pod manual updated -- now covers use with the K4

2021-10-31 Thread Fred

Hmmm ... and here I thought I was way too old to learn new things.

1.  There's a K-Pod utility
2. There's an update for K-Pod firmware
3.  My K-Pod runs with just the flat cable inserted and no wall wart needed
4.  To get the K-Pod utility to work, you have to do some finger
gymnastics on F1/F4

5. The new FW rev really does change the encoder rate

All I'm missing now is, "Do I like my old rate [1/2 the VFO A rate] or
the 1:1 rate?"  I'll try the new 1:1 for awhile.  Odds are very high
I'll get used to it right away and not notice the difference.

My K-Pod tune at half the rate of the K3S at all three VFO CTS settings.

If Elecraft could do it, I'd like for the K3/K3S F/W to provide the option for
the K-Pod to tune at the same rate.

In the K3, if you change *CONFIG:VFO CTS*, the VFO frequency moves faster at
400 than at 100 (counts per turn), but the K-POD always tunes at 100 or
200 counts per turn (can't remember which). The K-POD ignores the VFO CTS
setting on a K3.

In the K4, the equivalent setting is *MENU:VFO Counts per Turn*, and *both* the
VFO knob and the K-POD tuning rates are affected equally.

Just spin one knob exactly one full 360° turn clockwise, then spin the other
knob full turn counterclockwise. If you don't end up back on the frequency
where you started, it means the tuning rates are not the same.

2021-10-31 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
Did you try upgrading the K-POD firmware to 1.12 to use these new features?

1.12 10/20/2021
Holding down F4 on power up selects encoder 1:1 rate.
Holding down F5 on power up selects 1:0.5 rate.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K-Pod manual updated -- now covers use with the K4

2021-10-29 Thread Jim McDonald
I did check just before I sent my note. The new K-Pod F/W works the same as
1.09. At each setting in the K3S (was the same as the K3 I had before), the
K-Pod tuning rate is one-half of that in the radio.

I bought the K3 in 2009 and the K3S in 2017, and that never changed.

Check again, because that does not match my experience if your K-POD firmware
is at 1.09 (can't test now, sold both K3s). If CONFIG:VFO CTS is set to 100
(or 200?), I'm pretty sure the K-POD knob tunes at the same rate as the VFO A
knob. I don't think a power cycle is required.

If Elecraft could do it, I'd like for the K3/K3S F/W to provide the option for
the K-Pod to tune at the same rate.

Yes, we asked for that years ago, but it never happened, and I don't think it
will ever happen. There's just no room left in the K3's limited memory to add
such complex code now.

Consider upgrading from the K3 to a K4. K-POD plugs straight in via USB cable
and works perfectly.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K-Pod manual updated -- now covers use with the K4

2021-10-29 Thread Fred
"... except for the slow tuning."   I must be missing something.  My
K-Pod tunes at the same rate as the K3. I have one of the K-Pod buttons
emulating the FINE/COARSE button on the radio ... use it all the time.
Maybe the rates I have my K3 configured for just happen to match the
encoder in the K-Pod?

The K-Pod is an accessory control panel that's ideal for use with the K4. It
provides 16 switch functions; control of VFO A/VFO B/RIT-XIT offset; and three
general purpose open-drain outputs for station control. You can use the K4's
macro editor to create command sequences to assign to K-Pod switches.

For further product details, see:

  https://elecraft.com/collections/k-pod-desktop-control-panel

Revision F of the K-Pod owner's manual now provides complete instructions for
use with the K4 transceiver. The manual can be found here:

https://ftp.elecraft.com/K-Pod/Manuals%20Downloads/E740285%20KPOD%20Owner's%20Manual%20Rev%20F.pdf

K-Pod firmware was also recently updated: Rev. 1.12 lets you configure the
K-Pod's encoder to have the same resolution as those on the K4 (up to 400
counts per turn).

You do not have to tap the on-screen keyboard to enter macro text into the
K4. The K4's built-in Macro Editor supports ten finger typing with a real
USB keyboard plugged into one of the K4's three standard USB Type A
connectors.

An external USB keyboard is currently the easiest way to enter long macro
strings into the K4. Hopefully someday Elecraft will provide a new host
command to store macro text. Such commands would allow PC software, or
basic batch files, to save macro text into the K4.

Right. The macros are stored in the radios, not in the K*Pod. You need to
run K3 Utility at the radio site to load them into the K3. The K4 has a
primitive text editor for on-screen macro entry, one finger typing with no
tactile feedback. Not fun but no computer required.

I’m right handed and use my right hand to send CW as well as to copy. So, the

I use it every day… can’t believe how convenient it is!

left me with arm/shoulder deficiencies, aggravated by reaching out to
tune and adjust a radio. The K-Pod is the best accessory I purchased for

[Elecraft] K Pod switch replacement or fix?

2020-12-26 Thread hawley, charles j jr
I’ve been wondering as I contemplate replacing at least two of the push button
switches, if there is a more permanent fix.
The schematic is available on the Elecraft website.
What do you think of installing say a 10K pull-up resistor from the 3 vdc buss
to each of the switch outputs. I wonder if that would stabilize the inputs. It
seems like the issue is no-current switching making the contact noisy after
repeated use. 10 K doesn’t seem like much of a current to help, but that and
maybe the presence of a load would reduce the noise to the pic processor.

2020-11-06 Thread hawley, charles j jr
The switches are surface mount and quite sealed. The surface mount on them is
not a problem the way they are soldered in. But ultimately, it seems like
Elecraft needs to replace them as to brand, model, in their production if they
haven’t already done so.
When I called for replacing pod number 2, I was told that this was extremely
rare and even not likely for someone to have two of them go this way. But with
a little persistence they sent me my third one. I think they are getting old in
the tooth now, so we should see more “rare” failures ahead. As of right now,
replacing the pc board for $120 is probably the way to go, with the hope that
the switches are a more reliable sort.
I, so far, went the way of just switching my most used macros to relatively
unused switches. Good for another almost year I hope.

I posted this on Elecraft .io but will try here as well...

I love this K-Pod, BUT I've sort of worn out 3 of them. The symptom is that
the most used buttons get noisy and trigger another macro from another
address. When I had the first one do that, I did extensive testing to
eliminate rf noise, etc.
And a new unit however proved to work perfectly...for about 4 months. When
it started doing the same thing Elecraft said it was highly unlikely and
especially twice to the same guy, but they sent me another one anyway. Great
company!
Now that one after a year is doing it again. I rearranged the macros to
different buttons of the two macros I mostly use, and it works flawlessly
again for me. I doubt that Elecraft will keep sending me these things, but
maybe I'm missing something. But all I can come up with is noisy switches,
double triggering. No switch bounce protection?
I notice now on the Elecraft site that there are PC boards available for
about $120. Almost doable if the switches are not available separately, and
less expensive than the $290 for a new unit.
Has anyone come up with a part # for the original switches?

Let me know your solution as my KPOD has the same problem.

The buttons on the K3 always work as expected, but the KPOD buttons don't.
A real pain in cw pileups.

Send a note to Elecraft support and ask for the manufacturer part number. I’ve
always received a reply and often with the Mouser or DigiKey part number

The K-Pod manual says that an annunciator in the K-Pod produces a brief audible
tone whenever switches F1 thru F8 are pressed. This does not happen with my

the one I tried first was to put the mode in the macro string first. That seems

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD Issues, But I Love It!

2020-09-16 Thread hawley, charles j jr
Another small issue I have had is when I am on say 3710 KHz LSB
and send the macro FA705;MD3;
the K3s goes to 7049.280 KHz CW sometimes. (720 Hz is my offset for CW)
If I send FA705;MD3; again right away
it goes to 7050 KHz CW

Then when I send FA371;MD1;
the K3s goes to 3710.720 KHz LSB sometimes
Again, if I send FA371;MD1; again right away
the K3s goes to 3710 KHz LSB.

This has always been the case and has nothing to do with the wrong macro being
sent...
am I not allowing for something in my macros?

A couple turns on a toroid  at each end did NOT help.

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD Coiled Cord?

2020-07-17 Thread Dick Dievendorff
My K-Pod, an early one, has a rear-panel USB-B connector labeled "USB", used to
install K-Pod firmware and also for a K4 connection. K-Pod DC power is also
provided through this cable.

I use a very standard USB A to B cable.

I put my desired functions coding into the K3 Utility, but I don't see how
to apply them from the Utility to the radio where the function buttons on
the K3 imitate. What am I missing?

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD working intermitterly

2020-01-14 Thread Clay Autery
My apologies  I said it was RJ-12  I believe I remembered
incorrectly  It's an RJ-25 (straight thru).  RJ-12 is a handset
cable with NON-straight thru wiring... essentially reversed to bridge
the handset to the base device.
RJ-25 is a 3-line, straight thru cable.    That'll teach me to
respond from an obviously faulty memory.

Could this be the cable between the rig and K-POD?

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD working intermitterly

2020-01-14 Thread Clay Autery
MY bet is a bad KPOD cable  As I remember it, it is a straight
through cable with 6P6C, RJ12 connectors on both ends.
You could make one if you have CAT-5e cable, 6P6C connectors, and a
crimp tool.
You simply use 3 of the 4-pairs...  Cut 4th pair back to jacket (brown
has the loosest twist rate, I'd pick that one).

And whatever pair you use for Pins 1/2, simply cut the wire that WOULD
be on Pin 1 back to the jacket at the radio at least, and I would cut it
back on both ends to "be sure" AND not have a "stub" sticking out in space.
Crimp them, preferably with connector boot on the KPOD end.  IF you have
your radio elevated on the from side, there is room for a boot on the
radio end as well.

If you have the radio sitting flat, there MAY not be room for a
boot  6P6C/RJ12 connector boots may be hard to find.
In the case that you DON'T use boots, it is IMPORTANT to make SURE that
the jacket gets crimped under the connector's strain relief bar on crimp
to keep the conductors from separating due to work hardening of the
copper when moving the cable.

AND, as always for PATCH CABLES, use stranded cable and connectors
spec'd for stranded cable to be safe.  You CAN use solid cable or solid
wire connectors, but the durability will be greatly reduced.

Hope this helps...

Re: [Elecraft] K-POD working intermitterly

2020-01-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

John,

Do you tend to move the K-Pod frequently? If so, that could be a reason
for cable or connector failure.

Try holding the cable an inch or so from the connector (do that at each
end). Move the cable back and forth a bit - see if that induces the
fail/no-fail situation. If so, a cable replacement is in order.

[Elecraft] K-POD working intermitterly

2020-01-13 Thread John Altman
My K-Pod has stopped working ... it works (macros are functional) for a
few minutes after K3S turned on and then power light is out and button
functions do not work! Turn rig off and back on a few minutes later and it
functions, for awhile.

I have reloaded full firmware for both K3S and P3 ... no behavioral change.

I have disconnected K-Pod cable at both rig and K-Pod, re-connect, no
change.
Cable is connected in jack under front panel.

Otherwise, K3S is fully functional. I am aware the “macros” reside within
the K3S.
Could this be the cable between the rig and K-POD?

Any ideas to remedy this situation will be greatly appreciated. Direct
reply to wa4...@arrl.net.

Thank you,
John WA4AIP

Jim,

Refer to the K-Pod manual.

You must cut one of the wires to use with the K-Pod.

Using the K3s utility, the macros fire off 100% reliably so it's the pod switch
buttons I guess. Double triggering, not triggering, sending the wrong buttons
macro. It's getting worse. Looks like the hardware is not up to the task.
I wonder if Elecraft has improved the quality of performance on this item. I
have had two bad ones so far and this one is probably out of warranty. I guess
it's worth sending it in for repair?

Of the differences enumerated by Elecraft between the K3 and K3S, processing
power on the FP board was not one of them.

I find it hard to believe that the problem had anything to do with “processing
power” in the gentleman’s K3S. It sounds like there was some other issue with
his K3 .. and everyone gave up to soon to figure out what it was.

Re: [Elecraft] K Pod Intermittently Errors

2019-07-28 Thread Wes
I'll probably raise the ire of the faithful but I'm not too sure that making a
connection to this connector is a good idea in the first place.  I'm certainly
not an expert on what this is connected to inside the radio, but re-purposing a
connection that was put in for factory test purposes and probably not well
buffered might be problematic.

Just a thought

[Elecraft] K Pod Intermittently Errors

2019-07-28 Thread Frank via Elecraft
I had problems with my K POD RIT/XIT working intermittently with the K3. The
XIT/RIT worked fine on the K3. I opened a case and sent videos to Elecraft.
They sent a new K POD but the problem was not resolved. They had no other
solutions and the case was closed without resolution.

Years later I upgraded to a K3S and the same K POD works perfectly. Apparently
my 2013 K3 CPU processing power was not robust enough to support the K POD
fully. I did not us the XIT/RIT function often and really liked the tuning and
macro buttons so overall I was happy.

For some buttons, the Pod makes mistakes occasionally. Instead of sending the
correct macro, it?ll send a different button programmed one...or send both the
tap and hold ones. Mostly just happens with two of the buttons #4 and #5.
My first pod messed up with #1 intermittently and Elecraft replaced it. But
this one had a problem with #1 also intermittently.
And wisdom on this? I love the Pod anyway.

I had lots of trouble early on with my K-Pod and it took me recording a video

fixed it. That was some time ago and most likely you've upgraded, so this
probably is a non-issue but one never knows.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod function buttons not apparently working

2019-07-24 Thread Peter Lock
To anyone who was following this thread, I have had the following response
from the support team at Elecraft:

Hello Peter,

Doug is out on vacation right now. However, I talked to our K3 technician
here and we do not know of a way to send macros to a P3 from a K-Pod. The
K-Pod plays back existing macros on a K3, and even without using a K-Pod, I
cannot use P3 macros on a K3 and have them get sent to the P3. The K3
interprets them as K3 macros, which are often invalid for the K3. The
reason it would work from the utility would be because the utility is
sending the macros over the serial connection, which is shared between the
K3 and the P3, so the P3 acts on the macros when it sees them. I hope that
helps.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod function buttons not apparently working

2019-07-11 Thread w4sc

As Mike has noted, execution of P3 Macros from the K3 has not been implemented.
 IMO probably will not be.

Macros to the P3 can only be sent via the RS232 i/f from an attached computer.

The important thing to remember is the macros are not stored on the KPOD, but
on the K3 and “pointed” to when you tap/hold a Function key on the KPOD.

I just received my KPOD from Elecraft, and it will be great for changing
operating configurations that require a lot of front panel button interaction.

Enjoy!

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod function buttons not apparently working

2019-07-11 Thread Mike Flowers
Hello Peter,

Executing P3 macro commands from the K-POD has not been implemented in the
K3/K3S/K-POD firmware.

I was informed by Elecraft support that this was the case when I was trying
to resolve the same issue soon after the P3 was introduced.

You might contact Elecraft Support to confirm that this is still the case.

I found a workaround by using K3 & P3 macros in DXLab's Commander rig
control program.
