Re: [Elecraft] K1 LCD BaCKLIGHT
Sounds pretty similar to what I did. The white rectangle in my photo is a piece of white sticker vinyl stuck to the PCB under the area where the LCD mounts The two LEDs were sanded down with a Dremel tool and sanding drum to get the light to diffuse and also to make them small enough to shine behind the LCD panel. The two LEDs and a 680ohm current limiting resistor are all wired in series and draw a total of ~12ma off the 12V supply. Parts and wires are held in place by dabs of hot glue. Here's a closeup of an original and modified LED. https://www.dropbox.com/s/vsf64g05jgc4mbl/100_0054.JPG?dl=0 On Saturday, December 4, 2021, 11:09:25 AM MST, David Gilbert wrote: I made my own backlight for my K1 before the Elecraft version came out. I don't remember which FET I used, but an LM334 (very inexpensive TO-92 current source IC) and a 1/4 watt resistor would work even better, and today's LEDs are certainly much brighter than the ones I had available back when I did this. Better choice of colors as well. ;) 73, Dave AB7E On 12/4/2021 8:57 AM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > Ken, > > The K1 LCD backlight is no longer possible. Re: [Elecraft] K1 LCD BaCKLIGHT
I did a backlight on my K1 ~20 years ago that worked out well. The key was getting a transreflective LCD panel so the light would show through. The original panel was opaque. Re: [Elecraft] K1 LCD backlight foam etc
Greg, I assume you mean the 1/8 inch thick double adhesive strip - if so, the answer is yes, that is what holds the backlight in place. Position it properly on the first try because that double sided foam tape is difficult to remove if you do it wrong - follow the instructions precisely. In what way are you finding it "difficult to solder"? Just pre-tin the lead and the lead of the resistor/wire, then lay the resistor/wire next to the backlight lead and apply a bit more solder - task done. It is the pre-tinning that makes the process easy. Pre-shape the components so they lay in contact with each other before you start helps a lot too. 73, Don W3FPR ki4...@cox.net wrote: > Is the LCD backlight only held to the foam pad by that 1/8 strip? > Also, I am finding it difficult to soldr the anode cathode to the > jumper and resistor...any suggestions? > > Thanks > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K1: LCD backlight
Can anyone give me a hint to make my backlight lighten up ?? I have checked solderings and power from U3 pin 1 and 8. All looks OK to me. The LCD works perfect, but no light. Any suggestions ? [Elecraft] K1 LCD Backlight Now Available from Elecraft
Elecraft K1 owners who sometimes operate under low light conditions can now add backlighting to the rig's display. A kit containing all needed parts is available, priced at $19.95 (model K1BKLTKIT). Here's what the K1 looks like with the backlight installed: www.elecraft.com/K1/K1_backlight_detail.jpg We've found this to be a nice addition to rig, especially for camping trips and late-night Field Day operations. The backlight kit includes a replacement LCD (transflective), rectangular backlight LED (same color as the K2's), diffuser, and two current-setting resistors for your choice of 6 or 10 mA backlight current. The kit can be used with any K1. If you haven't yet built your K1, you'll end up an extra LCD, which you can keep as a spare. If your K1 is already built, you'll need to remove the existing LCD in order to install the backlight. Since we supply a new LCD with the kit, the old LCD can be removed by clipping its pins, then heating and removing them one at a time. This is quite easy to do, thanks to the well-illustrated instruction sheet written by Tom Hammond, N0SS. ON/OFF Control The backlight draws only 6 to 10 mA, but you can add on/off control if desired. One possibility is to use a switch mounted on the left side panel. However, since most K1 owners never turn off AGC, it may be preferable to use the AGC menu entry to control the backlight. To do this: (1) cut the RF board trace running from pin 8 of J6 to C31; (2) add a jumper on the bottom of the RF board from J6 pin 8 to P1 pin 18; (3) use another jumper to connect the cathode (K) lead of the backlight LED to pin 18 of J1 on the front panel board. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
